A short story—or a poetic scribble—based on my headcannon about Slider which I’m going to include in my ongoing fic at some point!
Featuring: Slider being from a troubled family. Slimav being fluffy. Maverick being slightly clueless but trying his best.
Slider was the third generation Eastern German-Russian immigrant. His nana and his mother emigrated to the US in the 30s.
Slider learned cooking from his nana, and some of his signature dishes were related to his maternal origin. Veal Orloff, Jaeger schnitzel with short pasta, hearty soup with Regensburger wurst. Slider spoke English and German, with a bit of verbal understanding of Russian (something that made he and Ice close.), which meant not only did he cook oh so well, he did that without botching the pronunciation.
His estranged mother was very unstable and had two children with two different fathers before she cut all contact with her family. Slider was ten when he started being the caregiver of his half-brother, Daniel “Danny” Kerner on behalf of their mother. Slider was twelve when his nana became their legal guardian—and moved to New York from his hometown in Orange County.
His mother was never heard again since. Slider moved on, but he still checked missing and unidentified persons reports from California State from time to time.
Danny and Slider had always been close. Danny liked dogs, dancing, and Star Wars. He proceeded to become a ER nurse, working in a hospital in New York City. Slider couldn’t be more proud of his little guy. Or not-so-little-anymore guy. Smart, handsome, practical, and kind. He attended his graduation from UC Barkley in 1991 and cried his eyes out to the point Danny just had to call Maverick (or Pete, in layman’s words—who was his big brother’s “friend”. Yeah, Ronnie, I get it. A friend to call for an emotional support and also some words of congratulations at your brother’s graduation.) to calm him down.
Slider never disclosed his sexuality to his nana when she was alive. Only told Danny when he had a second boyfriend after Annapolis. Didn’t want to burden her. Didn’t want to lose her. Maybe she suspected things. Maybe she told Slider on a random day in summer of 1984, that she would always love him no matter what. But they didn’t talk about it. His nana passed away in 2000 after battling a lung disease for almost a decade. Peaceful, but it caved a big empty space in his heart.
Maverick never nudged him to come out, either. He was just happy to be with Slider. He would, though, pay visit to her grave. He told her how much he loved his Ronnie. He told her how much he was thankful that he and Ron ever met.
Slider did not know who his father was, and neither did Danny, who seemed to have some sort of middle eastern admixture. Slider knew they both inherited their physiques from their nana’s side—the Kerner blood just happened to be so tall—but other than that remained a mystery.
Maverick once told him that his hair made him look like a sculpture, like a Greek soldier carved from marble. Slider opened his eyes for a moment before chuckling.
“I like how that sounds.”
Maverick later learned Slider believed his father might have been of Greek descent. When he was a child, he read a book about Greek history and saw a picture of a curly haired men, their hair styled like his own. He looked just like his mother, or so his nana had told him. But he’d got a curly hair that nobody else in his family had. He’d got a curly hair that his nana had to learn to take care of. He believed it was the only thing that connected him with his father, no matter how ridiculous it might sound like a true childhood dream it was.
Slider would dream of his unnamed father teaching him how to drive. He would dream of his unnamed father teaching him how to shave. But more than anything, he would dream of his father teaching him how to style his hair in the morning. A secret he’d kept. An embarrassing, petty, melodramatic one—which Maverick disagreed with. He, too, knew how it felt to be deprived of his parents’ presence, and how much it meant for him to just exist as Pete Mitchell sometimes—an unyielding prove that his parents once lived.
Every time Maverick ran his fingers in his curly strands, Slider just nuzzled him as if to ask for more. He kissed Slider on the lips as the defined coil-shaped curls came loose in his hands like a ribbon on the Christmas morning.

"I met a famous portrait painter, Sorine, at Olga Orloff’s, and he wanted to paint my portrait. He told me later that it was because he thought I was a specific type of Imperial Guard Russian officer, and that type would soon be extinct. Sorine was one of the intellectuals who had first sympathized with the Revolution. He was a leftist originally, a revolutionist; he drew away from the Revolution when he saw where it was heading. He was a very successful artist, well-known and popular. I told him I couldn’t afford his prices, as he charged a lot. A funny thing—he appeared a few days later, and said he would paint me for nothing, because he wanted to record me. He said he would even loan me some money if I needed it. I didn’t need it, but I thought that an unbelievably kind answer. He required about thirty sittings to complete my portrait. We talked while he painted. We found that we thought alike about life, politics, everything, and, in fact, Sorine became my closest and most valued friend, someone I knew I could count on no matter what happened, as he knew he could count on me."

Trick or treat!
Happy Halloween! Here is a chicken
This is an Orloff, a breed that originated in Persia, but was bred and popularized by the Russian Count Orlov, which is where the breed name came from! The fluffy elongated feathers at the chin of chickens are referred to as a beard, so this is a bearded breed :]

The World's Most Famous Diamonds
This remarkable collectors set is definitely the best curiosity we've had here at Butter Lane in a long time. The set consists of 15 replicas (cut to size) of the worlds most notable diamonds, made from crystal, with a perfectly fitted box and diamond booklet. In the set we have, The Shah (89ct), Pasha of Egypt (40ct), Orloff (200ct), Piggot (49ct), Polar Star (40ct), Sancy (55ct), Florentine (137ct), Grand Mogul (280ct), Kohinoor Old Cut (186ct), Nassak (81ct), Blue Diamond - Hope (45ct), Kohinoor New Cut (109ct), Jubilee (245ct), Regent (141ct) and finally the South Star (129ct).
One of my favourites, the Sancy Diamond, a fiery stone of Indian Origin. It's pear shaped, pale yellow in colour and weighs 55 carats! -Just about the size of a strawberry. This stone has been passed through many royal families, pawned and even stolen. My favourite (but gruesome) story about this stone dates back to King James I in 1605 when he bought the stone from Henri IV of France and his minister of finance, Seigneur Sancy. He became broke due to his highly expensive and fancy lifestyle, and the servant delivering the stone to King James was held up by thieves, in which he swallowed the stone. I must say, it must have been hard to swallow. However, the loyal servant was killed anyway and the stone was removed from his body (yuck).
Another stone, the Pasha of Egypt. It's considered the finest gem of Egyptian treasury, weighing in at 40 carats!! It's of octagonal shape and is of amazing cut, quality and colour. The whereabouts of this beautiful gem is unknown, rumour suggests it was purchased for over 28k by Ibrahim Pasha (1789-1848), viceroy of Egypt under Ottoman ruling. Fast forward to 1933, an Englishman put this stone up for sale and it eventually made it's way back to Egypt in possession of King Farouk. The worldwide known jewellers BVLGARI bought it off him and sold it to the "Poor Little Rich Girl" aka Barbara Hutton, in which she had the stone cut and set into a ring. The stone now weighs 36.22 carats and is privately owned in Europe.
The Shah diamond. Often described as the shape of a coffin, the cut of this stone is technically called a lasque cut; typical of Indian diamonds and it weighs in at a great 89 carats!! It takes it's name from the Nizam Shahi, a dynasty of rulers from the kingdom of Ahmadnagar, who ruled the state of Deccan in the middle-west part of India between 1490 and 1633. This rare stone would bear three inscriptions:
“Burhan Nizam Shah II in the year 1000” – about 1591
“Son of Jahangir, Shah Jahan, 1051” – about 1641
“Kadjar Fath Ali Shah” – Shah of Persia in 1824.
Since nothing will cut a diamond, but a diamond, some sort of diamond carving tool must have been used to engrave it, and the first inscription is the name of the ruler of Ahmadnagar. The second tells us that the stone was held by the Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan, grandson of Akbar, in 1641 And finally the third shows it was looted (along with the along with the Koh-i-Noor) by Nadir Shah, and was taken to Persia when his armies ransacked Delhi in 1739.
The Shah diamond’s next destination came about because of the assassination of the Russian diplomat, Alexander Griboyedov. He had a powerful influence among the rulers of Russia and played a role in the defeat of Shah Abbas Mizra (1789-1833), the viceroy of Azerbayjan. Griboyedov successfully negotiated the treaty of Turkmanchai with Persia, gaining valuable Russian territory, after their 1827 dispute.
Griboyedov was appointed the Minister of Persia and he soon returned to Tehran, even with his unpopularity in Persia. He was then killed by an angry mob who stormed the Russian legation on January 30, 1829 and the 89ct Shah Diamond was sent to Russia as an apology and as a gesture of appeasement to Czar Nicholas I. The gesture was successful and further warfare was stopped.
The Shah was made a part of the Russian crown jewels until the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. It disappeared for a short time and was rediscovered in 1922. The stone was then placed on display at the Russian Diamond Fund in the Kremlin, Moscow as one of the “Seven Historical Gems,” where it remains to this day.

Eighth Blog Post
The artist that I am researching is Deborah Orloff. Deborah Orloff is a photo-based artist and professor of art at the University of Toledo. She was originally from New York City where she graduated from Syracuse University with her MFA and Clark University with her BFA. Deborah Orloff has been in many exhibitions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Nizhny Tagil, Russia, and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her series is called Elusive Memory: Lost Histories. Her series explores the relationship between photography and memory while evoking the universal experience of struggling to recall the past. The images are the lost family histories that relate to forced migration which relates to her ancestors who fled Russian pogroms. It tells a story of family roots who had memories lost along with them only to be found to reveal what was lost. I think every photograph that was displayed was very nice to look at. I love the different perspectives that Deborah Orloff shows in her series because it brings depth and emotions. It engages me to look for more in her photographs. It also feels like what a memory would look like with how Deborah Orloff places her photographs and the lighting. I also love how you can see how old the pictures look like when they have been lost or slowly decaying away. I also see so many pictures that she has found and to think that there is so many photos that have been stored away.

Me and my mom have been fantasizing about moving to montana and starting a homestead. We want all the fluffy cold resistant animals like a Norwegian Forest cat and a big fluffy hearding dog. My mom wants to get Scottish highland cows. And I want Chickens but I don't know wich breed to get!
Russian Orloffs are a lovely and friendly mottled cold hardy bird with fluffy beards and a stern expression. Their featherless legs and small pea combs help protect them from frost bite and we have someone here on tumblr who breeds them, personally i like their orloffs better then i ones i posted
@xoloffs
There is also the Salmon Faverolle which is a delightfully friendly, fluffy, and soft chicken breed. Its feathered feet keep it nice and toasty in cold but dry conditions and its very cute. One of my favorite breeds
There is also the Brahma, one of the largest and gentlest chicken breeds which has a delightfully small bantam form is a very fluffy and round chicken breed. Like the Orloff they can have a fierce expression but they are big softies. They also have a pea comb and are beardless. Also one of my favorite breeds
@superfluffychickens has a flock
There is also wyandottes, orpingtons, australorps and barred rocks! Production bred birds are going to do worse in extreme weather so try to source birds from breeders (especially ones in your climate) rather then hatchery birds
