"There is," said the marzipan pig, "such sweetness in me!"
"The Marzipan Pig" by Russell Hoban is one of my favorite books. During the pandemic, @pgoedi from @communitybookstore read it and I drew it. Found it again and wanted to share it. This makes me want to draw live again. It is such a nerve racking thing and so fun!

July #reading - continuing with #pilgerman by #russellhoban - a strange book, and one that I can’t consume at my usual pace. Also read #andthehipposwereboiledintheirtanks - a collaboration between #williamburroughs and #jackkerouac not published in their lifetimes. The film #killyourdarlings which I also recommend is partly based on this. Finally - not exactly reading - but my friend @upsideyourmind gifted me the #surfacenoise ( @surfacenoise_vinylmixtapes ) colouring book illustrated by @nickcocozza which I have enjoyed looking at immensely 😊 https://www.instagram.com/p/CSIEY5RCB8V/?utm_medium=tumblr

A gentle masterpiece of post-apocalypse by #RussellHoban wherein Punch & Judy are the only cultural artifacts remaining from vanished world & become worshipped deities. Fine Summit Books hardback 1st in fine jacket, $15. A favorite book of former Baltimore artist renegade Mok Hossfeld, who has gone on to serve in China's governmental cabinet as education minister.

June #reading - I’ve barely read at all for the past few months as I’ve been busy with loads of things… I made a start on #thepeoplesactoflove by #jamesmeek lent to me by @emmylou.banks and she brought me #pilgerman by #russellhoban last week and it’s weird and brilliant (but also I’ve not made much of a start on it) Over the past few months I’ve been chipping away at #farandaway by #andrewsolomon lent to me by @josefushaze - that is highly recommended and nearly finished 📚 https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ3MZNJJEdo/?utm_medium=tumblr

After reading _Riddley Walker_ by Russell Hoban ...
“Walker is my name and I am the same. Riddley Walker. Walking my riddles where ever they’ve took me and walking them now on this paper the same.
I don’t think it makes no differnts where you start the telling of a thing. You never know where it begun realy. No moren you know where you begun your oan self,” (8).
Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban chronicles the oral histories and life of Riddley Walker.  Hoban’s character is a barely literate member of a post-apocalyptic society in England who, after his father’s death, decides to write about his life.
This novel won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award in 1982, an Australian Science Fiction Achievement Award in 1983 and was nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1981.
Hoban places this story in a futuristic iron-age where people salvage iron from scraps of today’s technology.  The interesting thing about this place is the devolved language Hoban has created – this dialect contains simpler spellings, spellings that reflect the spoken sound of a word or phrase, eliminated unnecessary letters from word spellings, and more – creating a language that almost needs to be read aloud to be understood.  The entire book appears in this devolved English.
The language in this book is what drew me to it.  A crucial aspect of my thesis project is to personify dyslexia through language.  My project draws some inspiration from John Barryman (the autobiographical aspects inserted into narrative poetry) and T.S. Eliot (cacophony of voices surrounding the reader).  Currently, I have personal essays, imitation documents, and memoirs blending with narrative poems with four different voices.  The project of my thesis is to create an autobiography-driven piece of fiction that is presented in a way that the reader understands the difficulties dyslexics go through to read.
One of those voices uses dyslexic English complete with spelling errors and mis-used words.  Russell Hoban’s use of this sound-driven dialect has given me some perspective on how oppressive reading a non-standard dialect of English can be.  Because of this I am very excited to craft more poems using my dyslexic English and to revise the ones currently in my thesis to use a singular language rather than four different aspects of the dyslexic language barrier.
One of the goals I was hoping to achieve with my thesis project was to capture the difficulty dyslexics have reading and this non-traditional language accomplishes that perfectly.
However – reading this book has also made me realize exactly how important consistency is with this type of language project, so as I revise, I think I am going to simplify my exploration of language to traditional written English verses dyslexic English so that the reader can experience the stark differences between the two rather than the language barrier I had set out to recreate in the beginning.
Russell Hoban’s narration style is similar to a conversation or an internal monologue where the narrative is occasionally broken by another character telling a story.  This causes an interruption to the narrative path and causes the narrator to back-track and put various aspects of the story on pause until he gets there.  Because the language is so abrasive, this break in the narrative becomes confusing quickly – especially because Hoban’s characters tell fables and legends and interject with songs as the narrative progresses. This aspect also correlates with my thesis because I break up my narration with poems and memoir pieces. The confusion between voices and timeline is also an issue in my thesis.  I want the timeline to stay disjointed; however this disjointedness needs something to stand on, so as I revise I am going to combine the voices into one singular poetic voice that speaks in dyslexic English and interrupts the essay and memoir voices.
 Revisions after reading Riddley Walker:
* Combine four voices into a singular voice that uses dyslexic English
* Simplify the language used so that the dyslexic language creates a contrast
