Mumford and Sons - Rushmere
Don't you miss the breathlessness The wildness in the eye? Come home late in the morning light Bloodshot dreams under streetlight spells A truth no one can tell And I was still a secret to myself Light me up, I'm wasted in the dark Rushmere, restless hearts in the end Get my head out of the ground Time don't let us down again Take me back to empty lawns And nowhere else to go You say, "Come get lost in a fairground crowd" Where no one knows your name There's only honest mistakes There's no price to a wasted hour Well, light me up, I'm wasted in the dark Rushmere, restless hearts in the end And get my head out of the ground Time don't let us down again What's lost is gone and buried deep Take heart and let it be Don't lie to yourself There's madness and magic in the rain There's beauty in the pain Don't lie to yourself Well, light me up, I'm wasted in the dark Rushmere, restless hearts There's something we might miss A whole life in a glimpse Well, I'm still working it out Time don't let us down again 'Cause I won't wait Get my head out of the ground Time don't let us down again

First Impressions: Mumford & Sons – Rushmere
I haven’t done an episode of First Impressions in a while, but I figured I’d bring that back for the new album from British folk / rock band Mumford & Sons. I used to listen to them way back in the day, especially when their debut came out. 2009’s Sigh No More is a record I really like, but they couldn’t hit lightning in a bottle twice (or ever again). None of the follow-ups have been good, and even their debut has its issues. It was a victim of the mid-00s indie-rock boom, more specifically the “stomp-clap-hey” meme that’s been hammered into the ground since 2010. It’s kind of a product of its time, but it’s still charming, nonetheless. I haven’t liked anything else they’ve done, but the band finally dropped a new record after becoming a trio (due to the member that left being an alt-right weirdo, basically). Entitled Rushmere, this is their first album in seven years, and it’s frankly a hugely disappointing one. I only listened to this album once, but once is all I need, so that’s why we’re doing this. I don’t usually listen to albums once and then talk about it, but I wanted to talk about this album in some way, shape, and form. I don’t know if I’d say this is one of the worst albums of the year, but if I don’t have a lot to pick from this year, it’ll be on the list come December.
Rushmere should be good on paper, because it’s one of those albums that has the artist in question “going back to their roots.” Instead of experimenting with electric instrumentation, Mumford & Sons goes back to the sound of their debut. As much as I liked that album, they don’t make it work here, and that’s due to two things: the songwriting is really boring, and their sound is just really boring. In other words, this album is just really boring. While their debut album had its fair share of slower songs that eventually built themselves up to a crescendo, this album is 34 minutes of slow ballads that don’t amount to anything interesting. There are a couple of energetic and fun romps, but they’re not “Little Lion Man,” that’s for damn sure. Frontman Marcus Mumford sounds pretty good on this album, but that’s the only saving grace it has. That’s not even much, but this is 34 minutes of almost nothing at all, and it’s a shame, because I was kind of hoping this album would be good, or at least okay. I could get into it if the album was fun, despite being generic, but it’s not. It’s a dour, sad, and boring listen that offers no sense of fun or happiness. I wish I liked this more, and maybe someone will find this to be a return to form that they’ve wanted, but I wish this album was more fun and energetic, instead of bland and uninteresting.

Album Review: Mumford and Sons - Rushmere
Mumford and Sons released album number 5, Rushmere this week. For a band that have begun to innovate and change their style in recent albums, I had some high hopes that with the shake up to the band’s line up they would take another new direction with this album. Sadly Rushmere feels like a dreary regurgitation of their debut, as they return stylistically to the classic folk rock that brought…
