First finish of the year happened mid-month - it's @owlkeyme.arts sigil for 2023. Please check out their Instagram to get the link to the blog post explaining its meaning and purpose. I've been having a lot of fun lately with watercolour and other colouring agents to enhance my embroidery. I think embroidering the year-sigil will become a tradition - I start it in the old year, and it's the first thing I finish in the new year . . . #embroidery #SigilEmbroidery #2023sigil #2023SigilEmbroidery #LauraTempestZacroff #OwlKeyMeArts #ChainStitch #StraightStitch #BackStitch #RunningStitch #SatinStitch #ColonialKnot #WitchEmbroidery #WitchyEmbroidery #witch #witchcraft https://www.instagram.com/p/CoBdUE1NRCe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

And now for something completely different! Another piece from my apprenticeship. This is Italian and trapunto quilting. The trapunto part is the main body of the monkey, you stitch a shape on two layers of fabric then slash the back of it and stuff it from behind. The Italian part is a thick wool cord pushed into a stitched channel. . . . #italianquilting #trapunto #trapuntoquilting #aztecdesign #monkeyembroidery #runningstitch #embroiderydesigns #EmbroideryTutor #embroiderytutorial #stitchedartisart #EmbroideryArtist #stitchbook #crafttutor #stitchersgonnastitch #bordadoamano #ricamoamano #quiltart #kurdelenakisi #learnembroidery #wemakecoolstuff #wemakecollective #modernembroiderymovement #margdier #hoopartembroidery #stitchedmodern https://www.instagram.com/p/CPaT2ThLvBX/?utm_medium=tumblr

Would you like to treat yourself with hours of Sashiko stitching for this winter? Finally, the “Sashiko Furoshiki DIY” kit is available in the U.S. for sale. Keiko’s favorite pattern is pre-printed on the beautiful Indigo dye cotton fabric (the best fabric we use for Sashiko stitching). It is so fun to stitch on it when you have the right needle, threads, and thimble. So, the DIY set has all included together. What you need is just to stitch while watching me stitching the exact same thing on Youtube. ☆ At the same time, if you would like to have the Furoshiki with beautiful Sashiko stitched already on, please consider purchasing the “finished Furoshiki” from us. With collaborating to Keiko (@Sashi.Co) and our artisans/students (rising artisans), we are happy to offer the option for them to stitch for you. It is my dream to make Sashiko sustainable again. This will help not only the Sashiko artisans’ work, but also give a great opportunity to a rising artisan to stitch for “you”. Thank you! ☆ #Sashiko #SashikoSet #SashikoKit #StitchItYourself #Unshin #RhythmicalStitching #RunningStitch #SupportArtisans #Furoshiki #MihabaFuroshiki #JapaneseSashiko #刺し子 #運針 #風呂敷 https://www.instagram.com/p/CJXSPFdHD4N/?igshid=1wpf5jlkj6d5o

I ordered two second hand silk saris which I cut into broad scarf sized pieces making enough for six double sided silk wraps.  Bonded with contrasting running stitch they’ll be luxurious when finished.

. . . S A S H I K O today, intricate sashiko embroidery is a style that has found its place in high fashion, but did you know that it was originally developed by poor workers to preserve their precious textiles? sashiko is an traditional Japanese embroidery style which dates back to the Edo period (1615 – 1868). it was mostly used by the working class farming and fishing families as to make stronger more practical workwear. a worn-out piece was stitched with layers of old cloth, producing a sturdy garment passed down through generations. one indispensable aspect of any evolving handicraft is its potential, in which sashiko is particularly rich. sashiko is today used in any number of products from clothing, bags, accessories like sunglasses, jewellery, and shoes to home linen, like cushions, rugs, blankets, bedspreads, and wall art. in these more waste-conscious times, sashiko is becoming more popular, embodying the quintessential culture of mottanai, the Japanese Philosophy of not having to waste anything. to make sashiko first start with a water-soluble marking pen, or pencil, to draw patterns on the cloth. you will need to wear a thimble on the middle finger to support the needle in continuing the running stitch for the technique to work. you can find the patterns and techniques you need in a guide book like The Ultimate Sashiko Sourcebook by Susan Briscoe. @wa.tu.ra #sashiko #runningstitch #japaneseembroidery #elephanTalk #gajahilosophy (at Gajahuis #F24) https://www.instagram.com/gajahilosophy/p/CYd29l3lPQi/?utm_medium=tumblr

Many understand that we advocate the traditional Sashiko. In fact, it isn’t true. Keiko and I are quite off the “traditional” route. As much as I love the tradition of Sashiko, what I do (Sashiko Denim) and what Keiko does (combination of many colors & types of fabric) are NOT traditional. The Sashiko artisans in my family would not consider them “traditional”. ☆ Keiko’s iconic Jacket, Hitomezashi Jacket, is one example. This is a mixture of her interpretation of Sashiko in 40 years & her artisanship in tradition. Vintage Mud-dye Silk with Sashiko due to the weakness of vintage silk. Her natural dye Sashiko thread will alter its color with the fabric’s history. I can talk about this jacket hours and hours… If one thinks that they know Sashiko by reading a blog article, then it is so sad that they are missing many beautiful aspects of Sashiko. The Japanese rarely call themselves “a master”... A master is a title from someone - not a marketing tool from an artisan themselves. ☆ This 1-year-making Jacket often gets sold out immediately. Or, recent years, She makes one as a backorder. It was my dream to share this in the U.S… so I ordered & will be in the U.S. (when the logistics are better, to avoid lost packages). Sashiko is more than just stitching - it is a culture in a form of simple & mere stitching. (Please do not ask “What is traditional Sashiko, then?”. A tradition cannot be (shouldn’t be) described so easily with words and a few photos).
