Playing Rune Factory 4 Special and boy...I have to say I absolutely love it already. This is my first dive in Rune Factory and it's just so pleasing.

I'm replaying RF4 (for the sixth time between 3DS version and Switch versions). It's been over two years since the last time I seriously played it, so it's been even longer since I've seen **SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU HAVEN'T FINISHED** Frey waking Leon.

And holy shit somehow I forgot exactly how romantic it is? Although I won't deny that maybe I'm reading into it more than ever because of how hard I ship those two idiots. I admit I'm hella biased. But their chemistry is electric from the moment they meet, IMO. He's also the most grateful by far out of all the Guardians, thanking her multiple times and stressing how badly he owes her in the future. He's so happy that she's friends with Venti, then expresses that he'd love for her to entertain him as well. I'm sorry but his ability to so quickly transition to teasing her after a moment of sincere vulnerability will never stop making my heart pound.

And how adorable is it that **MAJOR Leon spoiler** when Leon proposes, he tells Frey he's loved her more than anyone in the world since the moment he MET her. Oh geez I'm gonna get obsessed with the soulmate headcanon again now (which would prob be a good thing cuz I mean I've never finished my fic about it, oops). Maybe this playthrough will inspire me to pick it up again. But damn hello despite all his teasing, he'd never use words like that if he didn't mean it.

Starting around a year or two ago, I've started making these edits/character introductory posts of bachelorette/bachelor character ideas for Rune Factory. Where I simply create a concept of a character that I think would be neat/cool to marry in any of the games.

This character is Kodo. A man who actually did assassin work and maybe might be in town to carry out a job... Or maybe actually trying to start anew? The protagonist won't know for a while.

I have more of these character introductory edits that I can post if people are into/intrigued by them! Kodo is just a character I recently came up with.

Okay, just some Rune Factory 4 things for now

I can see Margaret eventually being the one to ask Forte out, since Margaret seems like someone who would say what’s on her mind and isn’t afraid to say how she feels. Margaret feels safe with Forte, and Forte feels stronger around Margaret. They talk and grow closer until they are able to decide what to do next. 

Doug and Dylas are rivals to lovers for sure. It doesn’t click how much they actually care about each other until Doug gets badly injured in the second arc of the game. After that whole mess, they’re basically inseparable. Dylas definitely worries about Doug a lot, but he’s willing to give him space and such. Also can and will call Doug out on his bullshit. Doug does the same for Dylas and they just end up closer until eventually they get married. Dylas probably opens his own restaurant or takes over for Porcoline. 

As for everyone else, I can see a few relationships clicking and making sense, but they are so much less concrete.

I could see Arthur ending up with a few different people, or even in a polycule. Leon could be a good match, starts with the usual teasing and friendly banter until they grow to enjoy each other’s company more and more. Then it’s just the logical next step to Arthur. Another one would be Dolce, and that just cuz I can see her sitting in his office as a quiet place for her to do her sewing/knitting/embroidery while Arthur does paperwork. Mutual respect for each other then grows into a nice little friendship where they have tea and breakfast in the early morning before Porcoline opens the restaurant fully. Then it’s again, the logical next step. The three of them together also makes sense, just following a similar path where Leon jokes and teases both of them, and then it progresses. 

Amber I’m very unsure about, but maybe it would be cute if she was with Kiel? Something about exploring the world together and going on their own type of adventure.

For Clorica, Xiao Pai, and Vishnal I really have no idea who would fit for them. Like, I guess I could see the three of them together? But I couldn’t tell you how that would go. The more I play Rune Factory 5 tho, I could see some of them getting together with the characters from Rune Factory 4. I’ll have to play the game more to tell for sure tho.

Used my limited graphic design skills to make a chart of all the characters Rosalie has romanced in (almost) every farming sim I've played with her. Lol I'd always wanted to do something like this and I'm pretty happy with the result.

Now, though many of these games involved premade mcs- I've played as some variation of Rosalie in games for as long as I could remember.

I noticed there's a trend that popped up in her choices that I think is as interesting as it is amusing. Ofc, most of these choices were just my personal favorite bachelors of that game, but they were still used to devlop her, and I hadn't realized how much she leaned towards certain professions, personalities, ect. I've concluded my girl loves a hardworking boy whose brooding but sweet- or a golden retriever Marlin: Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life was my first Farming Sim. I didn't get to play the female version until much later in life. So my choice of who'd I/Rosalie married had been pretty decided lonnng before I finally got to play it. But honestly even though I like Marlin, he's kind of the default choice because I didn't care for Rock and Gustafa- and Rosalie wouldn't either. I think if I had ever gotten to play HMDS:Cute I might have liked him more- or she would have married Griffin-

Blue | Harvest Moon: Magical Melody / Friends of Mineral Town: Loved Grey/Blue. (Let's face it their pretty much the same character). Upset the remake took away his hat. Little off topic, but even though character customization wouldn't be a thing in these games for years- I'd used to imagine my character had pink hair like Popuri LOL

Vaughn | Harvest Moon: Sunshine Islands: Vaughn was the first time I ever was head over heels for a character in one of these games- I just adored everything about him and I don't think it's hard to see why. Once she got to know him better, Rosalie def would have been hella smitten for this cowboy- (Also Vaughn walked so Logan could run-)

Owen | Harvest Moon Animal Parade: So Owen is an unexpected deviation. Most of these choices are also my favorites, but when I first played through HM:AP Gil was actually my favorite bachelor. I could have made him and Rosalie work, but it just didn't feel right. So after looking them all over I think she def would have preferred Owen

Dylas | Rune Factory 4: One of my favorite games from the genre- and I think the cast of romanceable characters was STACKED. Dylas was my favorite because he was seriously SO damned cute in all his events 🥰 Also think it's kinda funny he's a horse guy and Rosalie has a lot of horse motifs herself-

Alex | Stardew Valley: REALLY unpopular opinion incoming! I've put over 500+ hrs into SV 😭 but in all that time, I've just never clicked with any of the characters. Which really sucks because this is the first game I ever got to play as Rosalie. Alex and Sam were my favs, but I think Rosalie would lean more towards Alex.

Logan | My Time At Sandrock: Logan 😍💖🥰Just, guh- I LOVE everything about him and MTAS so damn much. Especially because the hyper fixation I had with this game/character was what led me to finalize Rosalie's design/character at long last. I developed so much content for him and Rosalie I never got to share 😭hope I can someday!

Mark | Coral Island: God I love big men who love animals- and Rosalie does too. 💦🥰 Honestly, even though he started out as one of my favorites (later to be replaced by Shark man hoo hoo haw), I wished more of his heart events focused on his relationship with the player instead of the dog. It was really cute at first but like 6 of the 8 cutscenes were about it and most of the time he never even interacted with your character. Was disappointing ngl.

Nokk | Roots of Pacha: Now- Nokk is not currently a romanceable character, but I'm hoping the future update will add him to the roster. 🫠💔Cause this is another case where I LOVE the game to pieces but none of the characters speak to me- aside from the one I can't have- Hayden: Fields of Mistria: and last but not least- Hayden. He just completely encapsulates so much of what Rosalie finds attractive, it's a little funny. I'm waiting until the game is finished to continue playing and I can't wait to see what the future holds for him.

The following will include some honorable mentions that I didn't include because I didn't have anymore room on my template/they weren't a farming sim/ect.

First up! Nathaniel from Sunhaven!<3 Feel like this responsible captain of the guard would work well with Rosalie. Honestly, there weren't really any choices that felt right for her, but for once in many years my main playthrough of the game ended up being with a different character and I had someone pre-picked out for her. So there lots of great choices, just none that suit Rosalie well.

Major Rune Factory ramble and rant to get it off my system before 2024 ends.

This is just me airing out some dirty Rune Factory laundry before the year ends so I can get it off my chest and start a new, as Rune Factory Guardians of Azuma comes up. It'll be one big tl;dr so if you don't wanna read then you are far from obliged to do so but if you want, then sure thing.

I wanted to write something sincere and honest that isn't just a jab meme with a predictable punchline.

Really, this is just me speaking aloud not just about Rune Factory but about the nature of writing in farm sims. I dunno. It's the last day of 2024. I've done my New Years cleaning and I'm bored.

So, RF fans and by extension, Bokujo fans keeping saying "We need Rromanceable MILFs" but I think they just mean more bachelorettes in Rune Factory that visibly not just look but also behave like adults.

I'm aware short / young looking / petite adults exist too (Xiao Pai in 4 looks visibly young but she constantly makes it a point to Lest that she's their senior while they're dating) and that younger players may also get into the series for the first time but let's not forget the series' history so we can learn and observe how it can evolve and progress in the future. It's easy to forget that Rune Factory used to pander to otaku in Japan long before they realized it had a huge market with female players and an international audience.

Granted, RF1-RF2 were very tame and the latter game I remember attracting a lot of fanart of the male characters and it sowed the seeds for an interest in potential bachelors. Which is a sharp contrast to Rune Factory Frontier, which up its tropes like a trashy 2000s harem romcom anime with features that wouldn't fly well today e.g. choosing to "accidentally" walk in or peep on the bachelorettes' changing room by the beachside or the discourse surrounding Eunice's story arc but that's another can of worms unrelated to this post. The Rune Factory 4 manga that was published in Dengeki Maoh back in 2012 had a lot of skeevy fanservice that would not align well with the series image nowadays.

"But it's in anime style, so female characters will look young by default" It's true. Especially with Minako Iwasaki as the artist, as much as I love her art. But that's not always the case. Fire Emblem mainlines or Hoyoverse gacha games (Genshin, Honkai Impact 3rd, Honkai Star Rail, Zenless Zone Zero) can and have designed adult female characters who visibly look and act like adults. (just posting Ruan Mei from HSR and Shamir from FE:3H as examples) And not just their designs or mannerisms either, I mean like... more heavier, hard hitting and mature storylines. I feel like 5 lacked it in that department compared to the feels coasters that were the marriage candidate sub events in RF4. But then again, it's probably weird to be asking for a revenge story or a tale of redemption and loss in a fantasy farm life sim but this is just me rambling on.

I don't want to say I've "outgrown" Rune Factory or anything. Cozy life sim games are such a comfort to me and I'm well aware a meme I posted then deleted yesterday resonated a misleading message but knowing 5 gave men likers Murakumo but kept Misasagi or Elsje off limits was weird.

I know 5 was just one entry in the series. I know bachelor and bachelorette rosters are variable depending on the game. Tides had a wide variety of designs while its bachelors fell flat because they were last minute. I personally felt like 5 had far more better designed bachelors than 4 did and 4's bachelorettes felt more balanced compared to 5.RF GoA and RF6 could turn out differently with their own sets of marriage candidates but the problem with RF5 was that they designed and wrote bachelorettes as if it was a game released in the late 2000s and early 2010s in 2021-2022.

RF Guardians of Azuma releases next year and RF6 will presumably align with the series' 20th anniversary window in 2026 so we'll see how the series. I know romance and marriage aren't the only things that define Rune Factory games but I feel people should be more open to discussing what makes them uncomfortable with the series instead of handwaving it because of X or Y.

I go on benders like this because I grew up with Rune Factory as the title that introduced me to cozy life sims. It has a special place in my heart. I was in high school when I first got into the series but even then I could tell that the candidates looking young may have had nothing to do with my age, probably due to a combination of artstyle and who Marvelous/Neverland were pandering to at the time.

Granted, my experience getting into the series won't be 1:1 with others so I can't speak for them and hell, maybe I'm wrong too but I do feel like "hey, maybe put more effort into the series' female characters" shouldn't be a hot take that can be dismissed with it being a cozy life sim or that kids play these games too.

That being said, I still haven't and will never forgive the garbage writing they gave Xiao Pai in her main marriage proposal event. RF4 treats her pretty horribly and it's always kinda weird when I read people going on about how "we should have married Lin Fa and adopted Xiao Pai instead" when in her romantic dialogue, she's brought up how she's older than Lest (in the JP script, she specifies by two years) which brings me to my next point....

I think ultimately it also has to do with the fact that the characters we play as in Rune Factory are pretty young themselves. In games like Potion Permit, the My Time At games, Fields of Mistria, Sun Haven, and Stardew Valley, we are blank slates we can easily customize to our liking with our headcanons and whatnot.

Rune Factory... the self inserting begins and ends once we choose a name for our protagonists. RF protagonists are usually their own characters and any dialogue choice prompt we are given with them aligns with their base personality.

Raguna was pretty "vanilla" in RF1 but had shades of 2000s harem romcom protag vibes in Frontier. Kyle in RF2 was more or less similar to RF1 Raguna imho. Aaron and Aria played the role of precarious and rowdy kids seeking to go save their father. Micah in RF3 comes off as a mild-mannered but somewhat deadpan snarker in the face of Sharance and the Univir Settlement's antics. RF4's Lest and Frey are defined by their devotion, trust, and loyalty to their friends. RF5's Alice and Ares have this air of skepticism and caution that I haven't really seen with Lest or Frey. Aden is the reckless, hotheaded shonen hero with his childhood friend, Sonja, as the fussy but well-intentional voice of reason in Tides/Oceans. A lot of male protags in RF are written to be "boyish" and "inexperienced" hence why older adults in these towns don't seem like immediate options but Ares can also marry Murakumo and Lucas so really, at this point I probably shouldn't think too hard about it.

I don't really have anything else to say aside that I like cozy life sims a bit too much and Fields of Mistria is a blast so far. I think Celine, Reina, and Valen are my favorite bachelorettes so far but I like all the bachelors and bachelorettes really. I really do think Olric will be added as a post-release bachelor in an update or patch after the full thing comes out.

Things you specifically or always do when playing certain videogames

I'm doing another tag game about videogames and our not-so-quirky quirks. Give 5 examples this time of habits or behaviors you commit when specific games or genres are played.

Here are mine:

Yakuza Series (PS4): I always, always call the local izakaya and order a take out of tekkamaki (tuna rolls) or some kajiki sashimi. because this game has your character nosh on premium sushi. Worse when you read the description and it always gets me mouthwatering for it. Nevermind the ramen or the donburi in that game, I love sushi and I will never play the Yakuza games without a dozen or so tekkamakis!

Streetfighter/Tekken: Or any one on one fighting games. I never play competitively. So when I sit in the arcade and play against the machine, and someone comes in about to pop in a coin, I always tell then "please don't. I do not want a challenger." I suck at actual human challengers. Thank goodness I've not encountered a jerk who ruins the game for me and let me finish my game.

Rune Factory/Harvest Moon or any farm sim: I check the list of marriageable candidates in advance and always pick the oldest bachelor. If there is an option to create a harem, mores the fun!

Resident Evil 4: I play tetris with my inventory. I am sure I am not alone in this :D

The Witcher 3: Nilfgaard always win! Also, I do not search for Ciri in the Isle of Mist until I get to talk to Countess Mignole with Vesemir still alive, then talk to Vesemir about her T_T.

Part 6 (or part 5.5?) of editing Rune Factory children sprites to look more like my favorite bachelorette/bachelor! (I swear I didn't forget about this series, I just got distracted)

Today we have part two of Rune Factory 4, with my favorite bachelor. This time, we have Kiel!

These look fairly similar to the edits I made for Forte (gee, I wonder why), but I feel like they're unique enough. Luna gets to be the blonde this time around and Kiel's eye color is surprisingly different from Forte's. Also, my bias for the depression siblings is being made clear.

Kiel isn't exactly the most popular choice, and I do wish he looked older, but his story and personality absolutely win me over. Sunshine boys are too powerful for me every time. He's just such a sweet, wholesome little book nerd guy ("wholesome" *side eyes the trauma that is his marriage event*). Anyway, fun character, heartbreaking marriage event, 10/10.

...none of them really look like my type. Which is fine. I went into Rune Factory 4 with none of the bachelors being my type but I still fell in love with Arthur.

It just feels a little disappointing that I haven't seen anyone who really clicks for me. Especially after Lucas and Murakumo were just so right.

💚 is a really hard one to answer with just one. So, I'll give my top three.

Doctor from MFoMT was my first love. I pined for him as I played the boy version and married Elli because she was physically closest to him and I didn't want to see him with her.

Gustafa was the next one. Honestly, I disliked all of the AnWL bachelors at first as a kid. After how great Cecilia, Muffy, and Nami were, they just seemed like a letdown. But Gustafa was just so stinking sweet that I ended up loving him. Funny enough, he's also the bachelor who looks most like my husband, so more reason to love him now.

Toby from ToT/AP came out of left field for me. I went in planning on Jin since he seemed more my type. But Toby's events with your character and Renee won me over. I didn't care much for fishing in HM until this man came into my life. Now, we fish for Toby.

I've missed a lot I want to catch up on with emulators since they aren't very popular where I lived growing up. I haven't played any of the Harvest Moon games since they split. But I haven't heard rave reviews about most of them.

the 3ds has access to so many harvest moon/ Story of seasons games and I am having a blast playing through them

I haven't made it very far and have only really played Sos: 3oT and SOS (well and Rune factory 4) so far but I have all of them now and there are just so many you can play on that thing

Also i hung out with my mom the other day and had her guess which of the bachelors I chose in each of the ones id played so far and she guessed so easily and then bullied me about how young Kiel and Mistel look

She was like "hm- of course you would go for the ones with baby faces are they even adults?"

and I'm just "i mean like the game let me marry them so i kind of just assumed they were yeah"

She also took one look at Wayne and went i bet you saw him and immediately went ew cowboy which is funny because yeah i did

like he did grow on me and I do like him quite a bit now but my first reaction to him was indeed ew a cowboy

Really though she knows me to well because every one of her guesses was right actually

though she did cheat a lot by choosing two options

Specifically it was like

SOS: Mistel or Fritz

3OT: Ford or Yuzuki

RF4: Kiel or Doug

Which like technically none are wrong like Yuzuki is right on the money tbh if i ever replay it ill be going for him. Fritz would probably not be for a bit if i ever play again Ill probably go for Raeger  Or Iris . Doug is very interesting and is high on the list if I replayed but id probably do like Margret first

it was also fun because anytime characters that leaned alot more Masculine looking popped up she was just like oh no for sure not that one

which i mean- yeah
