Part 6 (or part 5.5?) of editing Rune Factory children sprites to look more like my favorite bachelorette/bachelor! (I swear I didn't forget about this series, I just got distracted)

Today we have part two of Rune Factory 4, with my favorite bachelor. This time, we have Kiel!

These look fairly similar to the edits I made for Forte (gee, I wonder why), but I feel like they're unique enough. Luna gets to be the blonde this time around and Kiel's eye color is surprisingly different from Forte's. Also, my bias for the depression siblings is being made clear.

Kiel isn't exactly the most popular choice, and I do wish he looked older, but his story and personality absolutely win me over. Sunshine boys are too powerful for me every time. He's just such a sweet, wholesome little book nerd guy ("wholesome" *side eyes the trauma that is his marriage event*). Anyway, fun character, heartbreaking marriage event, 10/10.

It really is fun, in the first week of the game, to look up the Harvest Report and see something that has zero chance of being relevant to you.

The bumper crop is cherry grass? Between how requests work and crops having growth time, it's safe to say you won't even have access to the seeds.

The poor crop is blue crystal? Even if you were to somehow pull off a speedrun of epic proportions, I don't think it's the right season for getting those seeds. Which might be why the harvest is poor. Also growth time still exists.

A bunch of some new and old and REALLY old doodles of my grown up Luna design! (+ a tiny bit of Noel and Dad!Arthur)

She and Noel are Frey and Arthur’s twin children! With Luna being older than Noel by five minutes… allegedly.

More notes about her under the cut!

She is a traveling merchant who sells miscellaneous items (from tea sets and golden crops to glasses her father send her to sell).

She LOVES golden turnips the most!

She inherits less than a quarter of Frey’s Earthmate powers (most of it went to Noel), but even with little to no Earthmate powers she still considers herself, in her own words— ‘technically’ a bonafide Earthmate.

She is very outgoing and extremely extroverted, the complete opposite of her twin brother who’s timid and prefers to spend his time alone doing one of his experiments in his little cottage deep in the woods.

She is extremely silver-tongued and is Really Good at making people purchase things they don’t really need.

She (most often than not) leaves her butler Vishnal to travel around the world by herself :’) mostly because she’s so quick on her feet (both literally and figuratively) that he lost sight of her.

Rating Rune Factory Children

Rune Factory (1)

1/10

Cute but not much else to say. You have to wait a ridiculous amount of in-game time to get one short cutscene meeting your genderless nameless child (Game doesn't even bother to give them pronouns) and then never get to interact with them again. Disappointing.

Rune Factory 2

8/10

A unique idea that the series has yet to implement again, this game let you play through the second half of the game AS your child from the first half, and honestly It was a cool concept even if the gameplay got a little wonky and unbalanced near the end. The game also introduced the first female protagonist to the series, Aria (left). She and her twin Aaron (right) actually had some personality of their own and even had unique interactions with the other villagers and children of the town. Cool concept and solid designs. I just wish you could interact with them a little more as a parent before the timeskip.

Rune Factory Frontier

I may be a little biased here, as this was my intro to Rune Factory, but I love these kids. Default names; Leif and Leona, are the first, and so far only, RF children you can interact with at multiple stages, these kids have several cutscenes documenting different milestones and are quite cute to watch. Once they reach the final stage, they don't do much besides toddle around the farm and look cute. You can gift them certain items but that's about it. Still, It's refreshing to watch your kid grow over time as apposed to the usual montage you get with RF kids.

Rune Factory 3/ Rune Factory 3 Special

They get bonus points for being the first in the series to let you have multiple kids (up to three) problem is, there's not much difference between em. The birth of each one plays about the same and while there's technically some different "personalities" it's more like each kid get a random lot of four or so unique lines of dialogue and that's it. There are also just the two sprites so if you have two or more of either gender they'll be identical, no matter the age difference. You can't gift them and they don't sleep, leave the house or even show up on the map. Honestly they're little more than cute house accessories.

Rune Factory Tides of Destiny/ Rune Factory Oceans

First off, please pardon the crappy quality. This game doesn't have traditional character portraits so it's hard to find decent quality pics. Tides of Destiny kiddos were the first in the series to inherit physical features from the player's spouse. (Pictured are Electra's daughter and Sonja's son) They appear to use the same child models as Frontier with some minor cosmetic changes but I liked Frontier's kids so no complaints there. I do wish they had real portraits and more dialogue but they're okay. At least they'll accept gifts and the events leading up to their births are quite wholesome.

Rune Factory 4/Rune Factory 4 Special

RF4's kids are darn near perfect. Luna and Noel have identical dialogue but they have more to say than any RF kids before or possibly since. There are TONS of unique exchanges and events with them, they participate in festivals, and most interesting of all, you can equip them with gear and take them adventuring! These babies are really something special. If I had to pick one complaint, I'd say I wish they looked liiiittle more like their concept art. They look like they both got aged up a little, which isn't bad but they do look barely younger than some of their possible parents...

Rune Factory 5

9.5/10

Rune Factory 5's children are right up there with Noel and Luna, but they get a slight advantage when it comes to customization. Like RF3 this game lets you have up to three kids, but unlike that game, these kiddos are treated like actual characters. Depending on your choice of spouse and your answers in a particular conversation, your kids can have a variety of looks and personalities, including the fan favorite feature of inheriting hair and eye colors from the spouse, and continuing along that customization train, these babies can once again go adventuring! My one, one small gripe...It'd be nice if your eldest could grow a little by the time their siblings are born. Heck, it'd be cool if the villagers kids could grow too. I'd love to see teenaged Julian and Hina~

So there's my thoughts on the Rune Factory children. I hope future installments continue the trend of more giving their kids more personality and better customization, maybe someday we'll even see kiddos inherit traits from non-human parents? How cool would that be if your kid could actually look half elf or mermaid or furry wereanimal? XD

When you’re a dignified Knight-wife/mom. But the pair of doofuses you call your husband and son get roped into one of Bado’s ‘get rich quick’ schemes. And those monster costumes that they’re goofing around in are almost too cute to bear.

Also, Leon is just there to watch them make fools of themselves.

Just played through RF4 Special again after I finished 5. I posted a pencil sketch version of this on a different account a few years back. I finally got around to going over the linework of the original pencil sketch. Then, decided to add colour in too. Finally finished like I said I would.

Back at it again with part 5 of editing Rune Factory children sprites to match my favorite bachelorette/bachelor.

(un) fortunately, Tides of Destiny/Oceans kids already match your spouse, and they don't have portraits, so I will be skipping those games (sorry Mikoto & Bismark). This means that it's time for (part one of) Rune Factory 4, and Forte!

I honestly think these edits are my favorite so far. Noel and Luna are just so freaking cute in general, but Forte's coloring really works well for them.

Similar to my odd trend in having elf maids as my favorites, I also have a weird thing with knights. I'm biased towards Forte for too many reasons, but in general, I really like her story and personal struggles. Her design also slaps so hard.

Arthur/Lest (Feat. Baby Noel): Established Relationship

Lest watched as Noel stood on his tippy-toes to lift himself as high as possible against the door frame. The look of concentration on his face was laughable, but Lest held back a giggle as Arthur tutted. 

“No, no,” he said. “You have to stand flat on your feet. Back to the door, that’s it.”

“But dada,” Noel whined. “I wanna be tall.”

“You will be, but we need to see how tall you actually are.”

Noel pouted but did as he was told, and Arthur ticked a mark just above Noel’s head. Noel jumped back, and admired his name written in Arthur’s neat script just above the mark.

“Oh!” he said. “I growed five inches.”

“You grew about one inch, bud,” Lest laughed. “Good job!” He threw up his hands and Noel ran into the hug and was lifted into the air. Arthur came up to them both, misty eyed. 

“Don’t stay small long, do they?” he asked. Lest smiled.

“No,” he said. “They really don’t.”

He remembered when he’d first come--err fell into--Selphia. It had been hard without his memory, without anyone who knew who he’d been, but the town had welcomed him with open arms. He’d awoken the Guardians, lost Venti, then got her back again. He’d grown with this town, married Arthur and adopted little baby Noel into their family. It all seemed so far away, that worry about his loss of memory.

He had new memories now. And they’d continue to grow, alongside Noel and Arthur, and everyone in the town. 

Together they all made one beautiful garden, and Lest was pretty sure he wouldn’t have wanted to grow anywhere else.
