So what I've noticed: Lucien fans are generally Eris fans like me. Opinions on Nesta trend towards the positive side; no anti-Nestas, although there are a few neutrals Everyone loves the Valkyries Happy to see most Lucien fans believe in elucien; at this point, the only person for Lucien is his mate. Opinions on Inner Circle trend towards the negative side; a few positives, some neutrals, and quite a few negatives. Also glad to see there aren't so many Azriel simps on the Lucien side of the fandom bc after Az spoke about Lucien in that bonus chapter? YUCK. Saw a couple of Mor fans as well. Loving the people who believe in Vanserra supremacy. As for Tamlin, most Lucien fans are neutral but wish for a Tamlin redemption arc/healing arc, which is fair. Most Lucien fans who have read TOG also love Fenrys. They love Dorian and have generally positive opinions on Chaol (nice). There are many Lucien fans who are also Lorcan fans and makes sense cuz same. They tend to love Manon as well; I personally was neutral on her but not anti. Most Lucien fans are chill with Rowaelin but they're not the biggest fans (kind of like me). Most people like Tower of Dawn but some people haven't read it. If you haven't read ToD, PLEASE read it! Not only does it have crucial information but it's also overall a really good book. One of my favs in the series actually. Opinions on Aedion VASTLY vary. Personally I just found him annoying. Most Lucien fans find ToG better than ACOTAR, and same, even though Lucien is my number 1 character in the SJMverse TOG is just far better written IMO. But some of the characters in ACOTAR are so good; I think somebody mentioned this. But there are so many horrible characters in ACOTAR imo as well which cancels it out. Quite a few Lucien fans also found Ruhn to be their fav character in CC (same). Opinions on Lidia vary, although most people love the idea of ruhnlidia. Opinions on quinlar are also highly variable. Some people liked the frat boys but a surprisingly high number of people thought they were annoying (I like them as a group even tho they're frat boys, oops). I honestly found them better than the bat boys but that's just my opinion. Anyway, my order is Cadre>>>>>>>>>>>frat boys>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>bat boys

HOSAB SPOILERS

After the end of House of Sky and Breath and learning about the Asteri's breeding programs (sidenote: ick), I started wondering what the implications would be for the mating bond, both in Crescent City and in ACOTAR.

Specifically: is the mating bond something that the Asteri bred into the Fae in order to make them magically stronger? Has it been romanticized to help the Fae cope with the darker aspects of their history. Though the Under-King is talking about the afterlife, I kept thinking about this comment he makes to Bryce and Hunt: "The rituals were all invented by you. Your ancestors. To endure the horror of the offering" (HOSAB, 336). Is this what we're seeing with the mating bond?

There are signs that it's possible. In ACOWAR, Rhys tells Feyre, "And sometimes, yes -- the bond picks poorly. Sometimes, the bond is nothing more than some...preordained guesswork at who will provide the strongest offspring. At its basest level, it's perhaps only that. Some natural function, not an indication of true, paired souls" (ACOWAR, 258)

Keep in mind that Rhys is talking to his beloved mate at this point, so he's inclined to believe that, even if all mating bonds aren't great, his is a perfect one. For anyone who feels they have found their soulmate, this is a familiar feeling: while you feel as if you have chosen this incredible person, there's also a part of you that believes you were made for each other. If things had gone differently, if I hadn't met them on exactly that day or in that location, you tell yourself, we would have found our way to each other. SJM makes the "fate" part literal with the mating bonds.

But if we remove Rhys' comments from their context, the mating bond becomes something sinister, a way of arranging for powerful magic. And since the Daglan/Asteri feed on magic (HOSAB, 784), they could have simply and horribly been trying to breed the Fae into more satisfying meals.

Speaking personally, I think this is an interesting story about the ways we survive inherited trauma, the ways we seek romance, the ways that we turn biological function into something spiritual, the ways that choice sometimes doesn't feel like enough. I think SJM could write this in an extremely compelling way if she chose to. Still, it calls mating bonds into question, with big implications for ACOTAR in particular. And, looking closer at HOSAB and ACOSF in particular, I think she's trying to do something different with the mating bond.

Let's start by looking at the arc of the relationship between Bryce and Hunt. Bryce starts off disparaging the mating bond, memorably saying: "And at least he’s not some psychotic alphahole who will demand a three-day sex marathon and then call me his mate, lock me in his house, and never let me out again ” (HOEAB, 32). She doesn't romanticize mates at all in HOEAB, and if this continued in HOSAB, I would have thought that this was ultimately the direction that SJM has chosen to go in.

Instead, we see Bryce and Hunt choosing to be mates and then, as their relationship grows and deepens, they become "true mates -- the way the Fae are mates, in [their] bodies and souls" (HOSAB, 492).

Beyond the beautiful fact that they choose each other before a biological function pulls them together, Bryce and Hunt seem to have a power that, when they wield it together, could bring down the Asteri. They are incredibly powerful individually, but together? They could remake their world.

If SJM wanted to, Bryce and Hunt could have fallen in love and had these complementary powers without being mates. They could have been a symbol of a new way of loving for her characters that was purely based on choice. Instead, choice and fate and biology all bring these two together. Bryce, who is skeptical of the mating bond, becomes enthusiastic when she decides on this relationship with Hunt, freely referring to him as her mate throughout HOSAB.

We also see her use similar language between the way the mating bond feels to Bryce and Hunt, to the way that Azriel experiences Gwyn's presence (see: the Bryce and Azriel bonus chapters in HOSAB and ACOSF, respectively). If SJM were pulling away from the mating bond, I don't know that she would be introducing such a possibility, and certainly not in such romantic terms.

If the mating bond were a symbol of oppression, we likely wouldn't see her introduce Danika's mate, particularly in the romantic context its presented, let alone the romance between Ruhn and Lidia that definitely seems like a mating bond based on everything we've seen before. Instead, these mating bonds actually strengthen the characters' resistance to the Asteri, creating a stronger possibility of a better world.

After all, love and community are poor tools for any authoritarian. It's why we see dictators vilify certain people groups. People are much easier to rule when they're separated, and a strong bond that makes mates sacrifice and choose each other doesn't seem to play into the Asteri's hands. Love simply could not be bred out of the Fae.

In the end, I think that, as messy as they are, the idea that the Mother/Urd gives these mating bonds, and the Asteri simply couldn't remove it, is going to be a through-line that not only leads to the incredible romance and thrilling twists we love so much, but freedom for our favorite characters in Midgard and Prythian.

What a great year! Finished my first novel-length fic, began my RuhnLidia obsession, and corrected that heinous Elorcan fade-to-black.

Add in exploring some new ships in the past couple weeks, desperation to make PoppyCas and Malik compelling, and a pretty sweet collaboration with @headcanonheadcase and @ofduskanddreams , and my excitement for 2023 cannot be overstated.

Keep an eye out for Vérzavar Ház starting on January 2. I already know that it will be one of my top fics for 2023!!!

Gwynriel

"How was the party?" Her breath curled in front of her mouth, and one of his shadows darted out to dance with it before twirling back to him. Like it heard some silent music.

Azriel dipped his head in a sketch of a bow, something restless settling in him. Even his shadows had calmed. As if content to lounge on his shoulders and watch.

Azriel entered the warmth of the stairwell, and as he descended, he could have sworn a faint, beautiful singing followed him. Could have sworn his shadows sang in answer.

Az's shadows danced around him. "Since there's no chance in hell any of you will finish the course, we didn't bother to get a prize."

Ruhnlidia

Her voice was beautiful. Like a golden song. It stirred his Fae soul, made it perk up. I, ah...I hadn't gotten that far yet.

"Because I feel calm around you. There's so much shit going down, and I...I like being here. With you."

Her voice, lovely and fair and steady, flowed through him like music. Her hand brushed through his hair again and he reined in his purr.

This is so fun! Thanks for thinking of me 🧡 Here are mine:

we could be anything (RuhnLidia, one-shot, AU set during HOSAB) My first Ruhn/Lidia fic and it really made me feel things. Usually I can maintain some distance as a writer but the end had my heart pounding because I didn't want to leave them, especially the way I had to leave them. I tend to love a fic a little extra when it makes me fall in love with the characters, and this one made me a diehard stan. Also, I loved writing their conversations, their push and pull, and building out their characters, especially Lidia's.

Rules for Spies (Gwynriel, multi-chapter, canon-compliant pre-HOSAB) Writing this fic just made me so happy. I loved building out Gwyn and Azriel's characters and their journeys. This was my second multi-chapter ACOTAR fanfic and it really made me feel like I could be a novelist, I knew what I wanted to do and I did it and that felt great. There are still things I would change (there's a subplot I would love to explore to the tune of 50k words), but I love Rules for Spies.

Bloom & Bone (Elain/Tamlin and Vassa/Lucien, multi-chapter, canon-compliant pre-HOSAB) Very few people have read this fic due to the pairings (I get it!) which honestly was good for me because I just did whatever I wanted with it. I'm really proud of the Tamlin redemption arc, Elain's whole journey (her powers here are genuinely cool, and I'm really proud of the way I developed her), the entirety of Vassa, actually making Lucien snarky and fun, and also figuring out how to write big plot, banter, and sex scenes. There's a smutty scene here with Lucien and Vassa that might be my pinnacle as a writer, and I'm okay with that... even if I'm always trying to top it for myself.

aren't you scared? (well that's just fine) (Gwynriel, one-shot, canon-compliant pre-HOSAB) I'm still mad that I couldn't figure out a better title for this one, but it's the fic that made me fall in love with Gwynriel. As someone who grew up in the Evangelical church with the purity gospel, I found Gwyn being this sex-positive priestess really compelling, and loved working through how her trauma and recovery might intersect in her relationship with Azriel and lead to her further empowerment. Their banter has been so fun for me to write from the beginning, and even though I think I've gotten better at writing them since I wrote this, it will always have a special place in my heart.

To A Nightingale (Gwynriel, modern AU, she's a journalist and he's a rockstar) Literally two days before I got the idea for this fic, I said I would never write a modern AU... and then couldn't not write this. (I should also note that I said I thought Gwynriel was kind of boring two days before I started writing them. Basically, the best way to get me to write something is to get me to say I will never write it.) I still can't believe that I figured out a way to write about music, Latinidad, and Gwynriel all in one fic, and that people are actually reading it! I was very nervous to start posting this one because it felt the most like sharing my original writing, and it makes me so glad that you all enjoy it 🧡
