Harlan Guthrie’s whole new sci-fi horror series Deviser goes live in three hours!
It’s a huge new step in audio drama, not only in horror that John Carpenter would be proud of and incredible sound design, but also trying to show that you can drop an entire short-form series for binging and have it do well.
As such, all of these first premiere downloads count! Let’s blow his expectations out of the water.
(Do check the content warnings; this show is a frighteningly good listen but also heavy on gore, à la Alien or The Thing).

The reason Schottelkotte did not disclose it immediately is because they, nor the other editors, did not consider it relevant. They're a freelancer for Fable & Folly; F&F was not in any way aware of the article before publication – after all, Schottelkotte published it under their own name. Not Fable & Folly's. Not Hug House's or Realm's, the networks the editors are affiliated with, not even Caldera Studios', the production company Schottelkotte founded.
Here's F&F's response to that piece of criticism.
There's a certain misconception that fiction podcast creators are rivals or competitors to one another. I refer you to Kale Brown's thread or this post on the matter, but essentially, no that is not the case. Fiction podcasts are too small for that. The only way audio dramas and actual plays can grow is by sharing listenership, cross-promoting each other (the editors of this piece have promoted RQN shows before, RQN shows have promoted theirs before, F&F shows have promoted RQN shows before), sharing sponsors and donating to one another. If anything, there's more a problem of independent vs industry, when Audible or iHeartRadio create a new show and announce they've 'invented audio drama'.
Rusty Quill and Fable & Folly? Not rivals, not competitors, no beef. The fact that Alex J Newall has decided there is is very disappointing.
But because fiction podcasts are so small, it does make the issue of 'nobody is unbiased' a bit bigger because there is no independent third party in fiction podcasting. Nobody is impartial. Everyone's probably affiliated with someone somewhere, most known names have created their own content, worked with one network or another, guested on each other's shows. The only way we can grow is by advocating for each other as small creators.
And you know who some people are that're known to advocate for small creators? Newt Schottelkotte, Tal Minear and Wil Williams.
That's their agenda. Not tearing down a colleague, but standing up for small creators.
Incorrect Responses to the Who's Afraid of Alex J Newall article:
attack Newt Schottelkotte as to defend liking TMA because all your 'investigating' is unearthing one small, well-known fact about them and using that to discredit an article that took a month to write that clearly has a lot of research going into it
wilfully misunderstand what RQ's competition is
claim 'this didn't happen to me and I feel spoken for!' as there are people out there to whom this did happen and they're already too scared to come forward, this just makes them feel they won't be believed, discredited, accused of acting with malice the way Newt is right now
boycott RQN shows because this does not help independent creators oh my God did you not read the article
Correct Responses to the Who's Afraid of Alex J Newall article:
cancel your pledge to the TMA2 Kickstarter and donate to another fiction podcast show instead because half a million USD could fund several indie productions for years

that article was written by someone working for a podcast network in competition with RQ, which they did not disclose until called out about the conflict of interest. none of the sources or contracts are verifiable, and fable and folly stand to gain directly from the downfall of RQ. some RQN members have also spoken out about the article in the past few hours (@ColeWeev & @MalevolentCast), and everything in it should be questioned. i shouldn't be surprised that you shared it completely uncritically but i hope more people consider that this is not an unbiased piece of investigative journalism, and it should not be taken at face value. maybe it is true; i'm certainly more than willing to believe RQ is an incompetent, mismanaged joke of a company - but you need to consider who wrote this article, whether any of it is verifiable, and who benefits from it.
oh, i didn't realize that, thank you for informing me. i've heard and seen info from people who aren't associated with any other podcast companies that support the claims made in the article (that rusty quill has been severely mismanaged), so i'm inclined to believe it as its gaining traction from people who don't appear to have an agenda, and i know that in these situations it's hard to find completely impartial sources regardless, but it sucks and doesn't help their case that the author wasn't honest about their associations from the start :/ i intended to anyway, but i will definitely keep my eyes on the situation as it develops in case anything changes significantly that confirms things one way or another

You know what’s a super cool idea? If you’re upset about the whole RQ Network thing and not sure how to proceed, it seems like now more than ever the independent creators under RQN need support and confidence. If you’re financially able, or had been an RQ patron and are rethinking that, pledge directly to the individual creators you like!
Malevolent fan? Malevolent, Invictus and its side project Dice Shame have a patreon feed here:
The Silt Verses and I Am in Eskew:
Old Gods of Appalachia:
The Deca Tapes creator:
How It Ends:
The Storage Papers:
AND IF YOURE INTERESTED: HERE ARE SOME OTHER EXCELLENT INDIE PRODUCED PODCAST FEEDS. Of course there are dozens more I don’t know about but some near and dear to my heart:
The Night Shift podcast (if you follow me I never shut up about it, it’s the perfect meal to feed the hungry beast inside me that needs conspiracies and queer love):
Monstrous Agonies (great for those who have trouble with longer form podcasts, funny, lighthearted and entirely unique take on Creatures among us):
Welcome to Night Vale, the girl who walks so all these bitches can run!
Fool and Scholar Productions was, I believe, specifically made when a married team of creators became disenchanted with the current podcast network landscape (for ever more apparent reasons) and they’ve created a bunch of podcasts, including some personal favorites like Dark Dice and The White Vault:
There is also Fable and Folly Network, which does a kind of executive production think like RQ with all kinds of podcasts, like Death by Dying and the Amelia Project, but I have run out of links I can post but I know dbd and tap both have their own patreons!
And don’t forget to continue supporting the individual creators involved in RQ originals, too. These are people who are going to suffer the most from whatever backlash this creates.

Anyone have any recs for a podcast/audio drama that is like... Hard horror? Like... I love the gay plot-heavy found-family audio dramas with horror elements that get really popular here, but I'm looking for something which is primarily horror, which has a main goal of scaring the listener and which achieves that goal. Preferably not sci-fi or anything on the RQN.

I am in love with the show Anne with an E (and want to read the books now) and will soon write a full review, but couldn't help but write a mini one for now.
I absolutely love Anne's growth as a character, and while some may say that she has not had character development, I fully disagree. The show is well written, and the mistakes symbolise her growth, which is embedded into the storyline, and as we see Anne mature, we see her make more complicated mistakes. This mirrors life, as as a child, smaller situations seem bigger and so getting hit lightly by a friend may be the main conflict, and we view this through Anne's difficulties in fitting in and making friends, which are overcome quickly. During season 2 (or even the end of season 1), Anne faces more strenuous challenges, for example, her conflict with Mathew. She believes she is doing the right thing and has Mathew's best intentions at heart but ends up crossing boundaries, which are less easily resolved. She is still making the same pattern of mistakes, but I can see her learning, and considering her background, you can expect her to say the wrong thing a lot in situations. Her character definitely holds fondness and is unhateable, in my opinion, but at the end of the day, she is a kid who is learning to be loved. As people grow, so do their mistakes, and these mistakes also say a lot about her character and strength, and so I believe that it adds to her storyline.
Rqn out of time but that's pretty much it.

Oooo we’re doing recs?? So my favorite chill podcasts have been The Far Meridian and Unseen Podcast.
My favorite horrors have been TMA, Camp Here and There, and Silt Verses. I think I’m pretty much caught up with RQN’s free content.
I hope you’re having fun doing these!
