19. A kiss… for luck

It is a late morning, considering the fact that there is an impossible amount of work to be done. The first in far too long.

Grizzop is still sleeping, the full moon hunt of the night before too important a rite to ignore even in the middle of a broken London. She’s taken it on herself to do the tasks that he usually does for her - to put on a pot of tea, to make a hearty breakfast and to package up a small lunch that he can take with him on his journey across the city to meet with the rest of the Cult of Artemis that are currently stumbling into the city.

She, meanwhile, will take up her post at the nearest temple to her lady, offering healing and succour to those in need.

Eventually, she hears the sound of footsteps in the other room, and finishes folding the waxed paper around Grizzop’s lunch as he stumbles out into the main room with a yawn.

“Mornin’.” He grumbles.

Her heart feels warm at the sight of him, as does the necklace that sits at her sternum. “Good morning. Is Vesseek still sleeping?”

He nods, pulling the plate of breakfast towards him with a little smile. “Course they are. You know them.”

She does, and what a delight that is.

“Are you worried about today?” She asks, starting to pack up her things for work.

This is met with a confused look, as if he doesn’t know why he should even be feeling that way. Then, he thinks about it a bit more, and gives her a shrug. “Maybe. Should be fine.”

“That’s good, then. You won’t be needing anything else from me?”

He hesitates, only for a moment, a rare and exciting development. So Azu stays seated, waiting him out. She knows it won’t take long. 

“Maybe uh. You know. One of those…”

Azu does know, and she won’t make him say it. A silly little affection, something she started to feel closer to her goddess following everything that happened. A little act of worship that Grizzop assures her his lady wouldn’t mind.

“Of course, darling.” She says softly, dropping to her knees beside his chair. He turns to her, and smiles softly when she takes his head in both her hands, nearly dwarfing him. “For luck.”

The kiss is sweet, gentle, an act of love that she is all too willing to share with those in need. He hums, nuzzling his nose against her cheek when they part, and she fancies he might be glowing, just a little.

“Yeah. Alright. Think I’ll be okay.” He says, smile wide and toothy. “Thanks, Azu.”

“You are very welcome, Grizzop.” She says, returning the smile. “Any time.”

hey there - I've been thinking of listening to rqg thanks to all your excellent posts about it, but I've never listened to an actual play show before. can I ask. how do you do that. are there seasons? is it all one story and you have to start at the beginning?

but genuinely, i'm glad you asked! when i saw rqg from the outside before listening to it, i was also not really sure what it was.

rusty quill gaming is one long campaign (through not all actual play podcasts are!), and it is called "erasing the line." there are four seasons, although the seasons don't really have an equal number of episodes between them (season four is the longest). each episode is about forty minutes to an hour long, and they have mid-episode breaks, so if you can't listen for that long, you could totally pause it in the break and come back later.

you should definitely listen to it in order, and i suggest starting with the episode 0 metacast. moment of truth, i did not listen to that episode again on my relisten, i am listening to it now as i write this, but i do believe it contains Important Lore to understanding the story world, so i highly recommend starting there.

there aren't content warnings on the early episodes, but i think you can check the fandom wiki for a specific episode to see them, as fans have added them there (not sure if they're there for every episode though).

also there are kind of official transcripts on their website, but i am not sure how accurate they are as i have not read them. i know it was a Whole Deal with rusty quill (the company) to make transcripts, because they didn't do them from the beginning in 2015 and especially with something like actual play it can be hard and time-consuming to transcribe, and as there are over 200 episodes (including specials), there was also a big backlog. all this to say that there are transcripts, but i don't know if they are complete or very accurate.

apart from that, i will say that it is a little slow at the beginning, but if you give it a chance you may end up loving it :)

3. What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway) ...

My first RQG ship was Barnes/Wilde, and I'd love to write the scene where they met and the story of their unlikely partnership. It's all sketched out and I quite enjoy turning it over in my mind; someday, perhaps, it will make it to the page.

4. Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like) ...

Carter opens to his tongue, to the slow deep kisses that Barnes favors, that seem so far removed from his typical reserved demeanor, that if anyone were to see him now, the gentle searching kisses, the soft hums into Carter’s mouth, the yearning press of his body, they'd wonder what had been melted, or broken, or shed.

This is from Fathom, the last of a dozen stories about Barnes and Carter. A core element of the series is they are with each other in ways they are not with anyone else, that they can be open and soft and real with each other. And sexy. I find them very, very sexy.

FEELINGS ABOUT ZOLF LEAVING GOGOGO

It has not emotionally affected me too much, largely because it is a logical decision. The team wasn’t working, Bertie needs supervising.

A few of the things that got me:

-Hamid’s hug. Incredibly awkward and genuine, love that shit. Pretty sure Zolf needed that.

-Sasha hiding her illness when he’s gone. She trusted him, and now that he’s left her she’s shouldering that on her own. Ow

-Zolf admitting that one of the only things that kept him going was reading, and that this is why he reacted to strongly to Hamid and Bertie’s blatant disdain. He’s really not doing good, and knows this

Maybe it hasn’t really sunk in yet, given that it was so abrupt. I also know that we see him again, so it’s less devastating-seeing-him-leave-forever and more just kicking my feet and waiting for him to return.

Ngl I am missing the accent already though

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

I am firmly a proponent of the Rusty Quill doctrine - all headcanons are valid. HOWEVER.

However. This is a salty ask meme. So while there are several ships that are popular right now that just don't do it for me, the one I truly do not get is Zolf/Hamid(/Oscar).

At least one of them would fundamentally have to change their entire personality to even slightly make it work. The whole show is about how incompatible Zolf & Hamid are both as colleagues and friends (plus, Hamid canonically doesn't understand Oscar even if he thinks he does).

But, hey - whatever makes someone happy.

12. Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

I don't think any of my favourite arcs are unpopular... I am particular fond of the early (pre-Shoin) Japan episodes because that's when my brain started firing off creatively, but I think that's generally popular because of certain characters showing up.

I’ve been toying w the idea of relistening to rqg but I probably won’t, just cos I know that nothing will ever recapture the feeling of being SO mentally ill abt this show as it was coming out. And now that it’s over + the way that it ended and the trust Ive lost in alex as a storyteller = the serotonin that my latent hyperfixation still brings me when I think abt it comes with this bittersweet but really intense sadness abt how that experience was soured for me and how it can’t be repeated :’)

Fandom/ship I only wrote once: The mechanisms, and I'm not linking it because though it's not terrible it's also not one I like to think about too often, Silver Tongued Devil if you want to go find it.

Favorite fic in most popular fandom/ship: The Magnus Archives is the most popular fandom I've written for and I guess my favourite is A Soft, Consuming Embrace as it was the first true narrative fic I ever published, John wakes up to find the Lonely rushed in to fill the Eye's space.

Fic I wish more people read: Hmmmmm, I'm gonna be cheeky and say the RQBB Fic I wrote with @makesometime: A Chance To Run because I think it's a really solid narrative that is a love letter to RQG and it came at a time when the fandom was waning but I believe holds its own and Zolf and Oscar deserve their gin soaked speak easy. It can also be read as either SFW or exceedingly NSFW based on chapter headings and I think to be able to weave that together in the chapters was really cool of us.

Fic I agonized over: If I were being glib I'd say all of the kinktober fics I've published which can be found in my kinktobAmS series and are for but being serious I'd say I don't have an agenda. This is the final installment of my RQG 18m gap exploration of what's going on in the heads of Wilde, Zolf, Barnes and Carter and Carter's was the final one and it was like pulling teeth. I wanted to get his voice right so badly. I think it went okay.

Fic that popped out fully-formed: Conversely, the first in that series (Say something , do it soon) flowed out of me like water. I adore Wilde in so many ways, I have spent a lot of time thinking about the way he thinks and what motivates him and It's too quiet in this room was like writing down something being dictated it flowed so well

Fic I'm proud of: This is a toss up between Stems of White, Flowers of Green and Lets be flexible about this (both RQG). Writing both I made myself cry, just a little. The heartache of the first (a fic about Zolf's life when Oscar has died and returns to him with the blooming of flowers) felt so poigniant at the time and even reading it now it feels like such a lovely them. The latter is my longest SFW fic and was true labour of love. It actually started with a NSFW idea but it got away from me dramatically and I'm really proud of the twists and turns of it. Zolf in physio after losing his leg meets, surprisingly well put together, yoga instructor Oscar Wilde.

I have no idea if any of these will appeal to anyone, but it's funny to think of my random scribblings out there in the wild(e). Special shout out too to my erotic sonnets (all RQG) cause they make laugh and they're great fun. I should write more of those.
