26. Write a kiss as an apology. Zocar, RQG.

It's cold, is the thing, and Oscar's certain that it's going to be eating at the places where Zolf's legs transition. He knows it is because it always does and he could offer to fetch the cream that helps but that would involve leaving his study and walking towards the banging, crashing noises that come from the kitchen that he knows are as performative as his own, stretching silence.

At least he doesn't feel it himself anymore, even if he wishes that the touch that came with Zolf's seeking warmth were still available to him.

He stretches out his fingers, setting down his pen with a sigh and rubbing his temples as he tries to set the hurt aside and just get on with things like he used to find so easy.

It takes him a minute to realise that the banging has stopped - lost as he is in his own thought - and the tentative knock at the door straightens his spine, as though he's in trouble.

"Yes?"

Zolf pushes into the room on his chair, a blanket over his knees and a tray on top of that. Two cups steam and a pot beside it that Oscar recognises is probably full of the seemingly divine apple concoction he can see in the cups.

"Thought you might be cold."

They both know the lie for what it is and Oscar pushes back from his desk to stand and move to stoke the dying ashes of the fire.

"Smells good," he says, a little brittle, but warming, "did you use something new?"

He didn't.

"Na," Zolf says setting the tray on the table and shifting to the sofa. He doesn't pat the seat, but Oscar sits anyway, "jus' the old favourites."

"We do like the old favourites."

It's awkward, and tense, and in a way, Oscar already finds himself relieved.

He bends, brushes his lips to Zolf's cheek as he picks up the cups and hands one over. Zolf takes his with firm, solid hands and puts it back on the table.

Oscar doesn't smile, but he softens, when Zolf reaches up with hot palm to cup his cheek.

The kiss, when it comes, inevitable and utterly telegraphed, is sweet and soft and Oscar finds himself melted before he even pauses to breathe.

"Ah," he says quietly, "the best of the old favourites."

Zolf doesn't say sorry, but he steadies Oscar's cup in his hand as he kisses him again, and that's alright, too.

19. A kiss… for luck

It is a late morning, considering the fact that there is an impossible amount of work to be done. The first in far too long.

Grizzop is still sleeping, the full moon hunt of the night before too important a rite to ignore even in the middle of a broken London. She’s taken it on herself to do the tasks that he usually does for her - to put on a pot of tea, to make a hearty breakfast and to package up a small lunch that he can take with him on his journey across the city to meet with the rest of the Cult of Artemis that are currently stumbling into the city.

She, meanwhile, will take up her post at the nearest temple to her lady, offering healing and succour to those in need.

Eventually, she hears the sound of footsteps in the other room, and finishes folding the waxed paper around Grizzop’s lunch as he stumbles out into the main room with a yawn.

“Mornin’.” He grumbles.

Her heart feels warm at the sight of him, as does the necklace that sits at her sternum. “Good morning. Is Vesseek still sleeping?”

He nods, pulling the plate of breakfast towards him with a little smile. “Course they are. You know them.”

She does, and what a delight that is.

“Are you worried about today?” She asks, starting to pack up her things for work.

This is met with a confused look, as if he doesn’t know why he should even be feeling that way. Then, he thinks about it a bit more, and gives her a shrug. “Maybe. Should be fine.”

“That’s good, then. You won’t be needing anything else from me?”

He hesitates, only for a moment, a rare and exciting development. So Azu stays seated, waiting him out. She knows it won’t take long. 

“Maybe uh. You know. One of those…”

Azu does know, and she won’t make him say it. A silly little affection, something she started to feel closer to her goddess following everything that happened. A little act of worship that Grizzop assures her his lady wouldn’t mind.

“Of course, darling.” She says softly, dropping to her knees beside his chair. He turns to her, and smiles softly when she takes his head in both her hands, nearly dwarfing him. “For luck.”

The kiss is sweet, gentle, an act of love that she is all too willing to share with those in need. He hums, nuzzling his nose against her cheek when they part, and she fancies he might be glowing, just a little.

“Yeah. Alright. Think I’ll be okay.” He says, smile wide and toothy. “Thanks, Azu.”

“You are very welcome, Grizzop.” She says, returning the smile. “Any time.”

hey there - I've been thinking of listening to rqg thanks to all your excellent posts about it, but I've never listened to an actual play show before. can I ask. how do you do that. are there seasons? is it all one story and you have to start at the beginning?

but genuinely, i'm glad you asked! when i saw rqg from the outside before listening to it, i was also not really sure what it was.

rusty quill gaming is one long campaign (through not all actual play podcasts are!), and it is called "erasing the line." there are four seasons, although the seasons don't really have an equal number of episodes between them (season four is the longest). each episode is about forty minutes to an hour long, and they have mid-episode breaks, so if you can't listen for that long, you could totally pause it in the break and come back later.

you should definitely listen to it in order, and i suggest starting with the episode 0 metacast. moment of truth, i did not listen to that episode again on my relisten, i am listening to it now as i write this, but i do believe it contains Important Lore to understanding the story world, so i highly recommend starting there.

there aren't content warnings on the early episodes, but i think you can check the fandom wiki for a specific episode to see them, as fans have added them there (not sure if they're there for every episode though).

also there are kind of official transcripts on their website, but i am not sure how accurate they are as i have not read them. i know it was a Whole Deal with rusty quill (the company) to make transcripts, because they didn't do them from the beginning in 2015 and especially with something like actual play it can be hard and time-consuming to transcribe, and as there are over 200 episodes (including specials), there was also a big backlog. all this to say that there are transcripts, but i don't know if they are complete or very accurate.

apart from that, i will say that it is a little slow at the beginning, but if you give it a chance you may end up loving it :)

3. What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway) ...

My first RQG ship was Barnes/Wilde, and I'd love to write the scene where they met and the story of their unlikely partnership. It's all sketched out and I quite enjoy turning it over in my mind; someday, perhaps, it will make it to the page.

4. Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like) ...

Carter opens to his tongue, to the slow deep kisses that Barnes favors, that seem so far removed from his typical reserved demeanor, that if anyone were to see him now, the gentle searching kisses, the soft hums into Carter’s mouth, the yearning press of his body, they'd wonder what had been melted, or broken, or shed.

This is from Fathom, the last of a dozen stories about Barnes and Carter. A core element of the series is they are with each other in ways they are not with anyone else, that they can be open and soft and real with each other. And sexy. I find them very, very sexy.

37: a kiss without motive, Grizzop/Sasha, RQG

They’re sat on the floor, the sofa long abandoned for the warmth of the fire and the easy stretch across the rug in front of it. Sasha’s legs are hooked up over the seat and she’s grinning at him upside down.

“Three of a kind: aces.”

“Yeah?”

“Mhm,” she doesn’t spin the cards to reveal but she wiggles them at him, “got lucky, mate.”

Grizzop looks at the two aces in his hand. At the third down on the river in front of them. He smothers his grin.

“Guess I fold.”

He plucks the cards from her hand as she spins the right way up and onto her elbows to scoop her winnings into a little pile, her ankles still hooked on the sofa.

She’s still smiling when he kisses her, grinning into it then meeting him where he found her: a hard press of their lips, a melting smile behind them.

They break and she gives him another little peck. Just a small one. A chaser.

“Winners perks,” Grizzop says, to her questioning eyebrow, “free kiss every time you clear me out.”

“Oh yeah?” Sasha smirks, “not cause you just wanted to kiss me?”

“Always wanna kiss you,” Grizzop pokes his tongue out at her, “don’t need a reason if I don’t want one.”

Sasha laughs, setting aside the deck which she took from him without his noticing and shuffling forwards until they’re nose to nose.

“Just cause?”

He nudges her, their lips close and their breath hot, cards and losses and cheating forgotten.

“Just cause.”

She kisses him, and Grizzop grins against her lips.

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?

I am firmly a proponent of the Rusty Quill doctrine - all headcanons are valid. HOWEVER.

However. This is a salty ask meme. So while there are several ships that are popular right now that just don't do it for me, the one I truly do not get is Zolf/Hamid(/Oscar).

At least one of them would fundamentally have to change their entire personality to even slightly make it work. The whole show is about how incompatible Zolf & Hamid are both as colleagues and friends (plus, Hamid canonically doesn't understand Oscar even if he thinks he does).

But, hey - whatever makes someone happy.

12. Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

I don't think any of my favourite arcs are unpopular... I am particular fond of the early (pre-Shoin) Japan episodes because that's when my brain started firing off creatively, but I think that's generally popular because of certain characters showing up.
