THE HANGED MAN en ESPAÑOL
Tumblr media
TOTALMENTE INESPERADO tremendo

Alternate Interpretations to Misao's True Ending
Okay, so I'm aware I'm just screaming into the void because this game is pretty small fandom wise, but I still see some people express their dissatisfaction with how they handle Sohta/Kurata or Misao, so I wanted to give some alternative interpretations to story beats to make it more stomachable, I guess lol. However, I've seen some takes that the game is just bad because of it and that kind of rubs me the wrong way. I think it is fine to have some criticism for it and obviously, opinions are opinions, but I wanted to offer some alternate angles. Spoliers for Misao and please be aware of the dark themes! I don't go too deep into the actions.
Now this is not me trying to excuse or justify Sohta's or anyone else's actions. I just want to provide some alternative views as to what is being shown in the True End.
This game is just bad Corpse Party
This game is only really similar in that there is:
Nasty teacher,
Ghost girl who was abused in life comes back to torment the living and you have to help her pass on,
School in alternate dimension,
Lots of death
Misao has connections to the people she is tormenting, which I think makes her more interesting than Sachiko who only uses people who use the Sachiko Charm and kills for the enjoyment, although she used to do it to send company for her deceased mother. This also depends on what canon you are looking at. I would say Misao has more similarities to the Musume managa than original Corpse Party. I think lifting beats from Corpse Party does not make it bad, but I also don't think it is just a Corpse Party lite.
I don't like how it tries to make you feel sorry for or redeem Sohta
This is a valid interpretation for the true end section. However, I have interpreted it differently upon replays of it. Is it a redemption? Or more, does it have to be? Do you have to feel sorry for Sohta?
Interpretation one: The scene is an explanation of why Sohta is the way he is, not an excuse or justification.
Sohta is a very broken character. I don't think this is a "hey guys, Sohta was a good guy all along!" more of a "Sohta used to be a nice boy, but let himself be twisted by his anger." The scene is attempting to show you this was preventable. Had he been treated with kindness, he likely would not have turned out the way he did. Similar to Misao, if she was treated kindly, she likely would have just Lovely Bonesed Sohta and made a car crash into him or something and not become as vengeful as she did.
Sohta is bullied and ostracised because he is apparently butt-ugly. He is shown no kindness, aside from Takano who he crashes out on when she revels she didn't hang out with him becauses she liked or cared for him. She simply pitied him.
The game does not shy away from the fact Sohta is a bad guy. In the bad end, he kills Aki as she knows too much and is implied to likely harm further girls with Miho, so I don't think it is trying to say "actually he deserves redemption" but more "things run deeper than they may seem." Sohta was abused and became an abuser.
The scenes where you see his past makes him a foil to Misao. Sohta was bullied and he lets it bleed into his adulthood. Misao was bullied and abused and it bleeds into her death. They both lash out. You see that anger twists Misao's form as she is incorporeal. It turns her into a monster. It turns Sohta into a monster as well, but you don't see it. He is literally a wolf in sheep's clothing. Evil does not have to be visible, much like reality.
When Aki speaks to him, she talks about how people did like the true him. I think she says this because while Sohta is kind to the students, he does not allow himself to see the student's admiration as anything more than surface level, which he has a complex about. It's only for his "mask." This is illustrated by the scene where Ayaka and some girls talk about how they think he is super hot (which he hears) and how is is super cool (which he does not hear). This shows how Sohta was unable to move on from his past and sort of becomes a manchild. I think this is why he becomes his adolescent self at the end of the conversation. He never really grew up and his "inner child" was never healed. Aki was not speaking to him, but to his true, inner self. She is healing the past him.
It goes to show that monsters are not necessarily born, they are often made. And Sohta had a hand in his own making. I don't think it is asking you to pity him, but to have a broader understanding of him.
I also don't think you are a bad person if you do sympathise with the adolescent version of him. The story is all about how people need kindness. Or you'll get super haunted.
Interpretation Two: Aki is not forgiving him, she is cleansing him.
The whole game is about Aki helping cleanse Misao's soul so she can pass on and let go of her hatred and anger. Aki may have only spoke to Sohta to prevent Misao 2: Sohta's Reckoning from happening as he himself was a tortured soul. I bet the spooky school would have been way scarier if it was his spirit haunting everything!
For Akito though, he likely does it out of the kindness of his own heart.
Interpretation 3: It's optional
FUCK SOHTA, might as well skip his grave lol.
Interpretation 4: Aki is (implied) half demon and might view things differently
I'm just adding this one as a wild card, but if you have ever played a game where the protagonist does something you really don't agree with, maybe this is just one of the cases and it's because she is half demon. This one is my weakest interpretation, I just wanted to talk about the demon thing lol.
I don't like that Sohta reincarnates
Does he? When Aki interacts with the cat, she states that it was "happy in it's last moments." It seems more to me that the cat Sohta saved as a child has reincarnated. Maybe as a symbol of his past kindness carrying on rather than the monster he became. You could interpret he becomes the cat, but I think it being a sign of his kindness continuing is a lot better.
This is what I got lol. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has got one and they all stink. You might this this stinks, but I thought people might like to hear it. I don't see much interpretation for Misao, I usually see some pretty face value takes. I like Misao but found it weaker than Mad Father. Pretty sure it was Sen's first game which explains it lol. Hope you liked this, send your hate mail to me if you didn't.
