Plotting > spontaneous, at least for introductory threads.

I know a lot of people have “spontaneous interactions preferred” in their rules, and tend to gravitate towards meme/ask based starters, but I don’t care for it. For the record, there’s nothing inherently wrong with this format, and this isn’t me advocating for roleplayers to hammer out every detail of an RP in advance (which is tedious and destroys some of the fun that comes with improvising a scene), but I feel like some groundwork is necessary for first time interactions to ensure the scenario makes sense, especially if player universes aren’t a one to one match.

Plotting is a great way to ensure there aren’t any miscommunications or inaccurate preconceptions about characters and what settings would and would not be appropriate to place them in. It also can allow you to set up introductions that are actually interesting and have driving factors beyond two people just knocking into one another and being forced to speak as a result. If you don’t like introductions at all, it lets you build pre-established relationships that can kick off more spontaneous threads seamlessly. This contrasts with sentence starters, which typically operate under the assumption that characters are familiar with each other, but say nothing about what the nature of that familiarity is.

I find it a little grating when people complain about how new followers never seem to reach out, but have it stipulated they prefer starter memes, while simultaneously never reblogging memes that are actually accessible or applicable for introductions. A good compromise can be either “like for a starter” posts, or, if you’d prefer more structure, setting memes such as these, which are vague enough that they don’t intimidate newcomers, while still offering the writer a direction to steer their thread in.

Short but sweet: I can’t stand formatting that prioritizes aesthetics over readability. I actively try not to follow people who use color gradients or multiple spaces between letters, no matter the quality of their writing. Even small text bothers me a bit, though it’s not a deal-breaker.

3. 🚩

People need to get more comfortable sending themselves asks. If you reblog an ask game and no one bites, just send a prompt to yourself over anon. Obviously this is limited to single person Q&A memes, or character studies/solo scenes, but there’s no need to wait for someone else to sit down at the table if an idea’s already cooking.

Mattie: [Okay so our vibe for form is it’s about 30 mins at the start of the day, after breakfast for boarders and before lessons, and there are 4 girls from each year in the form (year 7-13) so the energy is very look after the little ones and go to the older kids for advice and help, as well as your form teacher being your go-to teacher for things you need that aren’t related to your subjects, you probably also have a matron-esque person for things related to boarding; Definitely doing houses also and you get points for good behaviour, academic achievement and clubs and sporting, can also be taken away for poor behaviour and performance, Dolly and Lulu are in the same house just not form. HOUSE TEA, after research it seems like forms and houses are separated by boarding and day students as well as sex, so only boarding girls in your form/house, you literally live with your house if you board, it’s about 60 girls, and there is the housemistress (and her whole fam and dog lmao) a matron, the tutors of the forms in said house and then head girl as well as 6th form girls being prefects, absolutely can think of what the housemistress, matron, head girl and other tutors who live in are like; MORE TEA, school starts 8:25, chapel, assembly or form time, four lessons before lunch, after lunch from about 4:00, 2 clubs a day, sports, drama, art etc until 6:00, final reg ‘til 6:15, then there’s the ‘cultural hour’ til 7:15, prep aka homework for AT LEAST an hour after dinner assumedly, Saturday is chapel, three lessons, lunch, then sports all afternoon depending how much sports you do, there are like 150 clubs so get at it]

Mattie: The placement is 8 weeks, I’ve had to let the head know and I was going to come find you to see how you wanted to proceed

Mattie: Dolly was happy enough to stay in my form and not make a big deal about it, her words, obviously this is a shock for us all and I’m not going to minimize that for my own gain

Mattie: But I am taking you for Physics and Computer Studies, so you would actually be seeing more of me than Dolly, so that’s… a thing

Mattie: There is another Computer Science class in your year but Physics is already a small class with just me… I could see if there’s a possibility for a Physics teacher from one of the other years to swap with me, if that’s what you would like

Lulu: Of course you wouldn’t be aware of our move, and of course Dolly doesn’t want to make a big deal of you being here now that we are, similarly I’m not going to make a fuss about you teaching me, that’s all you’re supposed to do, professionalism is also a… thing and 8 weeks is bound to absolutely fly by

I really enjoy your work, any tip for a newbie just starting out the world of roleplay in Tumblr?

[First of all,

Thank you! 

Second of all, I myself am pretty new to Tumblr and I don’t quite know all the ins-and-outs of it. For example, formatting different fonts or how to get themes to work. But those are more for fancy stuff than actual rp.

If you want tips on roleplaying aspects, I have a few as someone who has been doing this for a few years:

- If you’re just starting out, your writing is not going to be perfect, and this is okay. Looking back at the stuff I wrote in 2014 or 2015 or even early last year makes me cringe a little [okay a lot in the case of the 2014 stuff]. My writing now is still far from perfect, but there has been progression. Don’t beat yourself up if you cannot immediately churn out passages befitting of published novels.

- Try to reach out in your specific roleplaying community. This can be done by contacting certain accounts and asking if they can promote you, following a lot of people within that community, etc. You can also make an introductory post, showing off a bit of your writing style and a bit about your character and a bit about you, the person beyond the screen. Remember to tag it, too.

- Do not stress out about threads and replies. People (most of them, unless you have come across an asscravat, in which case I am sorry) will understand if you need a while with replies. Also, do not be afraid to say you’re disinterested in a thread or be afraid to poke someone after a while and say ‘hey, did you see my reply’? If some sort of event has come up that may mean an extended absence or that you’re merely burnt out, you can make a quick post about it or merely convey that to your respective partners.

- Cut your threads. This means deleting the reblogs every once in a while when you are reblogging a thread. That way, the entire dash is not taken up by your long threads. What is a good thread length? I would say that depends on replies. If you are on desktop, I usually cut when the scroll bar is this big:

Occasionally I may forget to do so when replying, but that is what editing posts is for. 

- If you are going to reblog an ask meme and it is not from an ask meme blog, leave a meme before you reblog. This is more of a courtesy thing than a rule. 

- Try to avoid one or two word replies. Again, your writing may not be the best in the beginning, but try to describe what your character may be doing or thinking. And remember, do your best to show and not tell. This is also kind of a courtesy thing, especially if you are given something akin to a paragraph or two. My rule of thumb as a ‘veteran’ is to try and keep up the same line length, or if I cannot, I make sure I have enough content to keep the thread going unless it is ready to conclude. 

These are just a handful of things I’ve picked up here and elsewhere, I’m sure there are more comprehensive lists/guides out there if you need them. If anyone else has better advice or a better guide, go ahead and leave it in the notes.]

While I will get to the small backlog of writing prompts I have yet to get to eventually, I’m feeling up to telling a different story involving the Followers. Today, you’re getting the origin story.

Not the characters, oh no, this is the story of how this shit show came together into something coherent. Buckle up, this is gonna be a long one.

As some of you may know, the Followers are each loosely based around and upon eight members of patrons on the Internet Remix Patreon server. I happen to only truly ‘own’ Witch; every other character involved belongs to the person that originally came up with them. If you didn’t happen to know this, here’s a quick rundown of everyone involved:

Now, this was right around when Internet Remix was announcing Camp Streamix and all of us on the Patreon server were choosing teams. A couple of us immediately rallied around Kristen and Team Murder, each for our own reasons (Onyx in solidarity for also living in the void state, Missfoxx given her longstanding friendship with Kristen, me for the storytelling and a long running joke that I was Kristen’s witch, Arahul for the intrigue, and Archer for the horror elements). 

Not long after this, we all got to joking that as the patrons, we were like Kristen’s followers in a way. I was the first one to really create a ‘persona’ as a follower of team murder, someone who vaguely resembled me and was dressed in red (a precursor to Witch’s final design). Given that I was already ‘the witch’ in another long since dead RP thing with some of my friends, I began to take the title of The Witch as a joke. Not long after, those of already committed to Team Murder all began discussing what we would each be if we had to put a role to what each of us were. 

Missfoxx was the older priest of the group, given that she had the longest relationship with Kristen.

Onyx was the right hand, given the two of them were both ‘void denizens’ and he already had jokingly begin to call Kristen ‘captain’ once he declared Team Murder.

Arahul was more of an advising figure, given that most of us consider him especially wise for his age.

Archer, perhaps a bit more on the nose, would obviously be a hunter of sorts given her name, the executioner as you will.

Along the way, we began joking that we needed a younger priest to complement the older, and jokingly said that we could just ‘steal’ Myst away if we really needed to. 

And slowly, we began constructing characters. 

After a little of this brainstorming and realizing that I happened to be really good at putting together something out of sparse details, I made the decision to go everyone and ask “Hey, I have this idea for a story, mind if I piece some things together and try and make this more coherent?” 

One by one, they each said yes, giving me little details on clothing and background, but ultimately leaving a lot of the larger stuff to me. So I took the threads all my friends gave me, thought about what I could do with it, and began to weave.

The Followers were born out of that weaving, a set of demi-gods and ‘angels by any other name’ who loyally serve the Murder God.

As I was writing, I realized with my own character, the Witch, matched perfectly to the witch role within the DMP game, and so that thread was woven into the story thread. 

Lieutenant and Old Priestess became more than their titles; they were now the two werewolves, partners in crime, and influential beyond belief. 

Advisor became the seer, able to peek into people’s minds and into the future. 

Huntress became the gunslinger, searching for justice and agency. 

Young Priest became the gardener, a speck of flavor text and light in a dark world. 

I was never expecting this little fan project to become as popular as it did, but it absolutely exploded among the people who were involved and among others in the Patreon server. People encouraged me to write more, and once I realized just how far this silly little project had reached, I decided to start plan out a small sequel project that would bring in some elements I had hinted in the original introductory work.

During this continual worldbuilding, things slowly began expanding out of that small, initial circle. Not long after, we brought Carl into the mix, as she was jokingly called the ‘bookkeeper’ given that she always fills up the out of context quotes chat and had introduced her own sort of ‘follower’ character not connected to the work I had done. Thus the Bookkeeper was born, representing the minion role and the group’s scribe

Kyle’s character followed soon after, though his was on a technicality. Because he wasn’t officially really any team with his penchant of donating to whichever team he felt like, we said that any character of his would just be there part time. Thus the Part Timer was born, representing the Doctor role and the group’s technology expert and partial spy.

With that, we had eight followers, which was all I could both reasonably write, and perhaps symbolically, represented the eight legs of a spider (given the large theme of webbing and the like). I promised to include these two new characters into the sequel series and give them their own time to shine, along with learning more about the current cast. 

With all these characters finally listed out, there was only one last thing to do. Give them their proper titles and honorifics fitting of the original five and the three that wandered in.

There was quite a bit more behinds the scenes work involved with this journey, of course, and I could never have done this without the help of all of my friends who helped me build this world, bring it to live, and paint it in beautiful colors. And, of course, it wouldn’t be where it is today without all the people who read it and told me ‘I want to see more of this’.

So, believe me when I give my sincere thanks to you all for helping me to get this far.

And as for when the next update is coming? I can’t promise anything precise.

Please don’t force my muses to do anything, or else I’ll become uninterested really quickly. Godmodding sucks for everyone.

Please do not throw something with explicit content at me unless we chat about it. I define explicit content to include nudity, spicy acts, or extra spicy language. I’m (usually) down to play with that, but I may want to move it to a more private platform like discord or decline entirely. Explicit content will always be under a Read More cut with warnings like “under cut for spicy content” or “under cut because explicit”.

I am in my late 20s and rarely feel comfortable interacting with muns who are minors. I will not knowingly rp spicy content with any mun who is not over 18. I also refuse to rp spicy content between muses that are under 18. If you deceive me, I will block you immediately.

“Ah, Senpai.” Visiting the 3rd years’ dormitories, Yuu ended up finding Amajiki. Her main target was supposed to be Hadou, hoping to see if she could perhaps intern with Ryukyu despite her counterpart already taking her figurative place. Doing nothing but study here in UA could only do so much for her. She needed more on-field experience, too, after all, even if it meant being around her alternate in the process.

Yuu waved her hand at him, approaching with a curious look. “I couldn’t find Hadou-senpai or Togata-senpai anywhere... Actually, a lot of the 3rd-years aren’t around from what I see. Is something going on?”

     Every once in a while, Midoriya would notice how this one guy in particular would often keep to himself, even around other students that were literally right next to him. Actually, it.. looked more like he just wasn’t being noticed by anyone at all. He’s.. pretty sure he wasn’t catching glimpses of a ghost here. At least, he.. really hoped that was the case... But, that’s besides the point. What’s more concerning was how lonesome it felt just seeing the guy there. It sort of reminded him of himself, really, back when he tried avoiding as much attention brought onto himself as possible...      “Uhm, hey there...!” Well, hopefully this student wasn’t more antisocial than asocial. Somehow, he just had this feeling that the poor guy was experiencing a similar sense of loneliness that he knew himself.

     “I, uh-- couldn’t help but notice you all by yourself here. I’m Midoriya Izuku, what’s your name?”

Eri’s looking a little down. Her training sessions with using her Quirk haven’t been going very smoothly lately. Trying to get it to stop had grown more difficult, probably because of how much it’s grown back up to this point, and because of this, she’s become rather discouraged in trying any more. 

Poor girl felt too ashamed to look Deku in the eyes. He’s the one she told that she’d try harder, after all. Would he be disappointed in her...?

It's him. Eri's most trusted hero. And to think they'd ever cross paths again after that incident with the little girl. Normally, Kei would think up a more clever way to address unexpected reunions with a person he's crossed paths with before...

... Yet, instead, nothing seemed to come to mind right at this very moment. Kei was so busy going through his grocery list that he didn't even realize the other was there until the both of them reached for the same apple. Talk about awkward. Midoriya hopefully won't make a scene, right? Things have already died down enough for him to safely walk around in public again, and he's pretty sure the kid knew that he wasn't that much of a threat when there's no need for it, but...
