When Kendall goes "tell the other side" at the funeral, that'so genuinely interesting, because babe? There is no other side. Arguably, Ewan covered it all. Yes, he talked about Logan Roy, the man that made the world just a little worse, a little less kind for his presence in it. But. He also talked about Logan the child that left and lost a sister, that experienced war and abuse, Logan who was his brother that he loved.
That's why Kendall can only really rehash the negative aspects Ewan mentioned and try to turn them into positives. Money and power, doesn't everyone in here like those things? Oh boy, I sure hope I can be like my father and have money and power, two things that totally don't corrupt people.
That's why Shiv can only really bring up the fatherhood aspect in a eulogy that so cleary speaks to her resentment and complicated love of Logan. Dear, dear world of a father. The father who, for many women, is the first man in their lives that doesn't measure up. That they can't measure up for.
That's why Roman can't speak at all, because Ewan's speech forces him to confront the fact that, yes, it's all true. The person he wanted to imitate and hold onto was Logan, the father he loved and wanted to be loved by; but also (more so) Logan the cruel man, the father that hurt him. Over and over. He can't say that out loud, so he expresses it in a different way.
If grief is an admission of love, it may as well be the realization of its absence. Can we get him out? Can we bring him back for one last round? Just to see if maybe this time he can love us right? Just to make sure? But no. No, you can't, and you'd be disappointed by the result in any case.

Series: Pokemon Horizons
Characters: Main plot: Friede, Murdock, Liko and Roy appeare fairly often too Minor part: Orla, Mollie, Captain Pikachu, Rockruff, Dot
Ships: FriedexMurdock also called Capncrunchshipping or Murfrieshipping
Summary:
Friede keeps sleeping in the captains chair instead of his bed and Murdock doesn't like that unhealthy behaviour and tries to convince him to take better care of himself, even if that means he has to give him the "Professor" treatment (I headcanon that when Murdock is mad at Friede he doesn't call him by his name and instead calls him Professor so the other man will immadiatly know that he fucked up)
---------------------------
Can't you see that I'm caring about you?
It's past midnight and today it's Murdocks turn for the night shift, so he wanders around the Brave Asagi to check on everyone. The kids were all sleeping safe and sound. Liko always slept on her side, sometimes hugging Sprigatito. She was breathing so softly that you could barley hear her. Roy on the other hand was more of a lively sleeper. The boy never layed in his bed the same way and Murdock always got amused to see which pose he would find him in, before gently laying him down in a more comfortable pose, tucking him under his sheets. Dot mostly layed on her back, arms over her head, softly snoring. She had a very deep sleep so it was easy for Murdock to pick up some empty bottles and snack bag, before leaving the room.
The next stop was the Captain's deck and he really hoped that he would NOT find a certain man in here today...but he was proven wrong. Friede was sitting In the captains chair or more laying half on his side. That pose couldn't possible be comfortable in any way ore means. The white haird man was sitting mostly straight, but his upper body leaning widly on the left side while trying to support his head with his arm, his left shoulder pressing against the hard wood. Normally Murdock would just pick him up and carry this unreasonable fool to his room and laying him in his bed, but not this time. Today is different. He is dissapointed...Friede did promise him earlier this day that he will sleep properly in his own bed tonight, but he cleary didn't hold to his promise...so he just let him be like that and left the room, but not before he put a blanket over this stupid idiot. He may be mad but he still cares and don't wanna risk that his best friend gets sick.
The next morning Friede was woken up by the rising sun. He needed to blink his eyes open several times before they could adjust to the blending light. With a deep and long yawn he tried to sit up and was immadiatly met with a stinging pain in his neck „Maybe sleeping here wasn't the best idea“ he admitted while trying to massage his neck. Then the yellow eyed man noticed the blanket he was wrapped in and was slightly confused „I can't remember getting this...“ but before he could think more about this his nose got distracted by the pleasant smell of freshly backed bread. „Hmmm...I wonder what Murdock made for breackfast“ he said ans with a soft smile he exited the room, still trying to strech his body.
Soon he entered the kitchen to see what Murdock was up to „Good morning“ he said with a big smile. The brown hairded man was in the middle of preparing said breakfast and answered him with a cheerful „Good morning did you sleep well?“ and a big smile on his face. Friede instantly grabbed his neck turning his head carefully and alternately to the left and right, making his eyes winch in pain a little while letting out a small groan „My neck is a bit sore“ „I wonder why...“ the chef promptly hissed out with a sarcastic undertone, barley loud enough for Friede to notice that Murdock said something but not being able to understand what exactly so he asked out of concern while lifting one of his brows „Did you say something?“ But Murdock just shakes his head „I was just talking to myself. The breakfast is almost ready so please get the kids“ he said with a smiling face before he continued to focus on the task before him. Friede just nodded and then left the kitchen to look if the kids are already awake. The cook let out a defeated sight as soon as his friend left the kitchen. „That idiot doesn't seem to remember a thing...I just care about you...you stupid“ he mumbled with a rather hurt but soft voice before he finished preparing breakfast. 15 minutes later everyone was sitting at the dining table. As usual Murdock served a tasty meal and everyone stuffed their faces, enjoying every bite. Murdock couldn't help but smile at this sight. But it didn't took long until he got interupted by Roy who almost choked on his last bite, because he ate to hastely.
Friede ate fairly much himself and felt full to the brim „Phewwww that was delicious as always Murdock. I'm so full I definately won't be able to move for a while“ he compliments the chefs food. Murdock just had the biggest smile on his face after hearing that „Thank you I'm happy your enjoyed your breakfast Pro..fes...sor!“ Murdock said the last word with such a joyful but yet terrifying voice that it made Friedes whole body shiver „Oh no...he is upset...“ he thought, cold sweat starting to run down his face while going through every interaction he had with the other man yesterday to find a possible clue of the sudden dissapointment towards him. „What was it!? Did I say anything wrong!? Did I accidentally break something? Did he forgot something important!? But if he forgot it how could he possible remember it now?“ Arrghhhh Friede growls while tearing at his hair „I do so many stupid and clumsy stuff how can he expect me to know what exactly made him mad?“ he thought. Molly and Orla immadiatly sensed the change of athmosphere between the two men. It wasn't the first time they witnessed Murdock getting mad with Friede, so they were sure they will figure things out themselves. After collecting all the dirty tableware Murdock left the room heading back to the kitchen to wash the dishes. Liko and Roy got slightly concerened because Friede was sitting their for several minutes without moving a muscle. „A..Are you okay Friede?“ a nervouse Liko softly asked him. But the man didn't respond so Roy tried with his energiy voice this time „ARE YOU OKAY FRIEDE!?“ the small boy neary gave him a heartattack. „I'm...I'm fine!!“ He promptly answered while having one hand on his chest feeling his heart almost coming out „I just got lost in thoughts that's all“ he tried to convince the kids while trying to put on a smile but it looked more like a grimace. „Are you sure?“ Liko worried asked him again. „I'm okay I promise so don't worry okay?“ he said while patting her head with a hopefully normal smile on his face this time before leaving the room with a „I need to check something so see ya later“
Friede spent his whole day trying to find out with what action he upsetted Murdock. He didn't relaized how fast the time flew by when he decided to take a break from thinking. In fact it's already dinner time so everyone was gathering at the dining table. Friede also sat down on his seat and still had no clue. His head slightly hurted from overthinking and he tried to hide it but Murdock did notice. The cook exactly knew why his friend had a headeach so he didn't need to sugar coat him. He is still mad with Friede after all. So yet again the chef put up his brightest smile „Does the Professor have trouble remembering something important?“ That took Friede a little off-guard and he almost choked on his food. He hated that Murdock could read his face so easily. „A well...I guess so“ He said a little awkward while scratching the back of his head „I see...“ The cook almost lost his facade for a moment so he took a short pause before continuing „If you don't remember it probably wasn't that important to YOU so don't sweat it okay?“ Murdock tried really hard to sound happy but Friede catched the sad undertone in his voice and felt even more guilty now. He couldn't bring himself to say anything after that and just silently watched his friend leaving the room.
That whole situation didn't went unnoticed to the rest of the crew. And Friede already sensed judging eyes towards him so he just felt like running away himself „Sorry I ehm I think I should go and check if we still are on the right course so...“ the white haired man hastely stood up, almost falling from his seat and left the room without looking anyone in the face. Liko and Roy just looked at each other confused not knowing what to do. „I think Murdock would be happy if you two could help him with the dishes“ Orla said with a smile on her face to distract them. The two kids just nooded and started to collect all the dirty tableware to bring them to Murdock.
The cook stood in the kitchen, tears running down his cheeks. He just had to leave or else he would have burted into tears in front of everyone „I expected him to not remember but still...my heart feels betrayed...I thought my feelings had reached him...“ the brown haired man pressed his fingers against his closed eyes to stop the tears. He took a few deep breathes to calm himself down. He doesn't want anyone to see him like this. But in this moment someone knocked on the door and he started to panic a little „Murdock are you in there?“ Roy asked with a cheerful but hesitant voice. Murdock was a little relieved that it wasn't Friede and heaved out a deep sigh. He promptly wished the last bit of tears away with his right arm and had to clear his voice before he was able to answer. „Yeah please come in“ the two kids then opened the door, hands full of tableware. „We brought all the dirty dishes. Is it okay if we help you cleaning up?“ Liko shyly asked with a soft smile and Murdock was deeply touched „Of course! You two are a great help. Thank you!“ the cook cheerfully said and the two kids happily staretd to bring everything to the sink so Murdock could wash the dishes while Liko and Roy dried everything with a towel.
At the same time Friede was running outside to get some fresh air. He just busted out the door and leaned on the railing. He was out of air and needed to catch his breath. After a while he lifted his head and looked at the sunset. „Right it's my turn on the night shift...“ he whispered to himself. He kept silently watching the sun slowly going down, still thinking about what he can't seem to remember...but to no avail...he just can't remember and he hated himself for it. It was already dark when he finally decided to go in hoping that everyone else already went into their bedrooms setteling down for the night. He opened the door and cautious peak inside. To his delight no one seemed to be here, so without detour he went to the Captains deck grabbing the steering wheel.
Thinking all day about why Murdock was mad at him mentally have worn him out completely. „WHAT DID I DO WRONG?“ He couldn't shake off this question and it started to drive him crazy that he wasn't able to grasp the reason for the chefs dissapointment. Especially after the last conversation „He could just tell me what upsets him though“ It was almost midnight when Friede decided to sit on the captains chair for a while and he literally let himself fall exhausted into the seat. His sore neck immadiatly tried to protest when he leaned against the back of the chair. „I probaly should sleep in my bed today“ he paused for a moment and then just repeated part of the sentence with a questioning voice „...sleep in my bed......in my bed....SLEEP IN MY BED!!! THAT'S IT!!!“ he couldn't help but almost jump out of the chair in the process, just to get his joy of finally knowing why Murdock is mad at him promplty replaced by the realisation that he indeed fucked up and that the other man had the full right to be upset. „So the blanket last night really was from Murdock...he saw me sleeping here after I promised him I would sleep comfortably in my bed...and him directly asking how my night was...and if I struggle to remember something important...“ the man closed his eyes and let out a deep sigh. Everything made sense now...and he rememberd everything.
The day before:
Friede was keeping Murdock company in the kitchen while the chef was preparing everything for lunch. He sat on the small stool in the corner watching every move of his friend. He made it look so easy, every hand movement is perfectly coordinated. „I could never cut stuff while looking away“ he said after wittnessing Murdock cutting onios without even looking because the man was busy reading a recipe at the same time. The chef actually wanted to test a new dish he recently found or more searched especially for it. Liko is not a picky eater and eats everything the cook makes and he appreciated it but he really wanted to create some comfort food for the shy girl, after everything she went through. „It's not that spectacular. Its only a matter of trainng. I'm doing this for years ya know?“ The humble man said with a smile. „Don't play down your hard work. If it would be so easy everyone of us would be able to cook like you, but that's not the case. I'm complimenting you here ya know?“ Friede protested with a up brow. „Sorry, sorry!“ Murdock answered with a playful voice.
Friede then layed back and coulnd't hold back a small groan, cursing his hurtinh neck. That didn't went unnoticed by Murdock „You slept in the Captains chair again didn't you?“ the cook asked being annoyed by the unhealthy behavior his friend couldn't seem to stop with. But Friede was avoiding eye contact and didn't answer his question. „So I'm right...how many times did I already tell you that it's unhealthy to go one like this?“ Friede just went even more silent looking on the floor now „When was the last time you slept in a bed?“ Murdock asked with a slightly angry but concerned voice, staring at Friede in hope he gets an answer this time.
„You know...last time when we...when we slept in your room together and...“ „THAT WAS LAST WEEK!???“ the big man hissed at his friend „You are telling me you haven't slept in your bed for over a week!?“ Murdock has to admit that his voice came out louder then he wanted to, resulting in starteling the smaller man a bit. But he was shocked after what he just heard. „Ye...Yeah but it's not that big of a deal. Sleep is sleep! Doesn't matter how I get it“ Friede tried to defend himself. „It DOES matter where you sleep!“ Murdock started to scold the him „Your neck hurting is the best example that sleeping in a chair is unhealthy!“ „It always goes away after some time“ Friede tried to defend himslef, not understanding what Murdock is so worried about. The cook went silent for a while after that before he started talking again „Sorry for screaming at you, but can you promise me that you gonna sleep properly in your bed? At least for today?“ he said with a caring voice while looking at him with pleading eyes. Friede wanted to protest but it seemed important to his friend so he promised him to do so.
Back to the present:
Murdock layed in his bed unable to rest. His Rockruff cuddeling right against his chest. He gently petted the little puppy that was already snoring soundly. He couldn't help himself but to smile at this cute sight. But the smile was washed away from his face as soon as he fell back into deep thoughts. „Should he have just told Friede why he is mad?“ He started to play with one of Rockruffs paws, softly pressing it's toe beans. It wasn't the first time that Friede forgot something so he should be used to this, but for some reason he feels really hurt this time, almost betrayed „I just care about him...why can't he understand that I'm just worried? Are my feelings worth nothing?“ The cook asked frustrated while looking at his Rockruff, expecting an answer, but of course the only respond he got was a big yawn. Murdock had to giggle „Of course you don't have an answer on that“ while watching his little fellow getting even more comfortable „Maybe I should talk to Friede tommorrow...“ The cook then turned out the lights and kissed the little puppy on his head before trying to catch some sleep himself, tightly but gently hugging his partner.
The next morning:
Murdock always wakes up earlier then the others so he can prepare breakfast for everyone. Always trying to be as silent as possible. But before he could concentrate on cooking he needed to check something. That something included a certain someone he hoped he could talk to and clear things up. So of course he went to the Captains deck first, because he was sure to find the man here. But to his surprise he only got greated by Cap „Pika...chuuu“ The Pokemon said while doing his icnonic arm crossing pose. „Oh Good Morning Cap you seem in good spirit today“ Murdock replied with a smile. „Hope you are hungry, because I'm gonna make plently for breakfast“ the cook said getting out an excited „Chuuu“ of the Cap. Murdock walked out of the room but instead of going straight back to the kitchen he had to see with his own two eyes. So he now stood before Friedes room slowly opening the door and there he was. Laying on his stomach, arms and legs streched out. Murdock was so relieved to find him sleeping in his own bed „I wonder if you did remembered?“ he softly whispered to himself to not wake up his friend while gently tucking Friede under his sheets. Before closing the door he once more looked back at the peaceful sleeping silhouette and just could smile at this sight.
As expected Friede didn't appeard for breakfast, that wasn't unusual when his friend was in charge of doing the night shift. So Murdock went to bring Friede his share like always when this was the case. He knocked on the other mans door and was about to open it after he didn't get a response to check if he still is sleeping. But to his surprise someone suddenly grabbed his arm and pulled him into the room. Murdock just tried to balance himself and the tablet with the food while he heard the door closing behind him. Friede was standing there leaning on the door with his back. „G..Good morning Friede!“ the bigger man stuttered out, still a little confused what just happend. But Friede couldn't bring himslef to look Murdock into his eye, not yet. Murdock put the tablet on the little night stand to get it out of the way „Are you alright?“ The brown haired man didn't sounded mad anymore he just was worried „I'm sorry...“ Friede still looking on the floor „I'm sorry I stepped on your feelings and broke my promise...I'm really sorry I'm...“ In that moment Friede took all his courage to lift his head and face his friend properly. But before he could say anything else he felt two strong arms around him taking him into a tight hug „I'm so glad you did remember and took care of yourself“ The cook let out with a trembeling voice followed by softly sobbing. Friede couldn't hold back his own tears at this point and hugged his friend back „Thank you....thank you for always caring about me!“ the words just gushed out of the white haired man with a quivering voice.
A few minutes passed and Friede almost started to whine when loosing the warmth of Murdocks body, because his friend pulled back from the hug. But soon enough he knew why when he felt two big hands gently cupping his face in between. „You know I love you and would do anything for you“ Murdock said with still teary eyes and such an beautiful and angelic voice that Friede wasn't able to hold himself back and pulled the other man into a passionate kiss. He wished this moment would last forever but they got interrupted by his grwoling stomach. Friede was a little embarressed and his already pink cheeks became more redder in an instant. Murdock let out a heartful laugh „Seems like someone is hungry“ he teased „ I guess I could really use something to eat right now“ he answered a little flustered. „Then sit down and eat your breakfast“ the cook said while pointing on the night stand were he put the tablet filled with food earlier. Friede didn't waste time, jumped on his bed and happily started to stuff his face. Murdock just sat right next to him watching his friend enyoing his food, softly smiling.

somebody sold us all kinds of lies (August Cleary)
August wonders when he first started being disappointed in Lily.
Not angry at, not frustrated with, not annoyed by.
Disappointed.
It's a weird feeling. She's the older sister, the oldest of all three of them. She was someone to look up to, especially considering how rarely their parents were around. She was someone admirable. The kind of older sister that August, at around half the age he is now, would've thought of as invincible. The elder that knew everything. The shield that kept them safe.
She was always so on top of things, when they were younger.
"August, see, the water's boiling," she had said to him one inconsequential day. A day just like the ones that preceded it and just like the ones thought would follow it. A day that was so mundane that August didn't know why he remembered it. "Once it gets hot enough, I'll put in the pasta, okay? Right now, I need to change Roy."
August was impatient back then. He still is, of course, much to his chagrin, but he was even moreso when he was younger. So he pouted and whined, but then when Lily went back to cooking, he stared in wonder as she effortlessly put pasta into the pot, without spilling anything.
Back then, August just thought she was that cool. She could do everything. Like nothing was impossible for her. She barely knew any french, but to August, one well-pronounced 'bonjour' was like knowing the entire language.
"'Bonjour' means hello," she explained. "And 'je' is I."
"What's 'family' in french?" August had asked.
"Familie," she said, without missing a beat. August knows now that she was wrong, but back then, she was just that good at lying.
"Familie," he repeated, letting the word sit on his tongue. Even though it was wrong, just a little bit off from being the correct pronunciation, August’s mind still jumps to that when pressed in class. He wishes she never lied to him like that.
"See? I know everything in 'francis,'" Lily bragged, horrendously butchering 'français.'
Now, he wonders just how rarely she told the truth. He wonders how quickly Lily grew up. He figures it was probably pretty quickly.
So that disappointment has a bit of an undercurrent of pity. Sadness. Something. Or maybe it’s nothing.
He wonders if that thing from a few years ago meant he grew up fast, too. He's mostly started thinking of his life as before and after. It was only a few years before before when Lily had started acting differently. Reckless, impulsive, mischievous. She took up skateboarding.
"Roy, August! Come check out this new move I learned!" Lily had shouted at them from in the middle of the road, attempting some weird trick August couldn’t name.
She had just barely avoided getting hit by an incoming car when she had burst out laughing.
After that near-death experience, she had only laughed.
When Roy and August saw that she was laughing, they laughed, too. Just a bit. It felt both wrong and right.
"Holy crap, that was close!" Lily said between pants and giggles.
August hadn’t minded the change. It was a bit worrying, but she was also more fun. Not that she was not fun before, but. Well. Skateboard tricks were cool.
Then, Lily's new attitude led to that thing, which led to after, but Lily was still the same. It was just an accident. A mistake, on her part. It wouldn't happen again, August thought, when he questioned her stagnancy, so that's why she's not changing again.
He wonders what really caused her first change. Some dumb altercation between her and their parents spurred it on, he recalls.
August wasn't the same. Not entirely.
It was enough for him to change, but why not her?
He doesn't want to consider himself the centre of the world or anything. Just because something happened to him that made him change doesn't mean Lily should change, too.
Still.
August wonders if it was around then that he started being disappointed.
"Lily, what're you freakin’ doing?” August asked one day, after. Angrier (or pissier, as Eva would put it) than before.
Lily spoke, muffled from the strip of duct tape in her mouth. "Makwing impwovemens." She placed the tape over the diet cola bottle on the end of her skateboard with her free hand; the other holding a pack of mentos. "Making improvements," she repeated, grinning.
"You're an idiot." August tutted, and he crossed his arms. "An idiot that's gonna give herself a concussion."
"Nope," Lily replied simply. "Got a helmet," she said, knocking on the helmet next to her.
August frowned. "Helmets aren't magic force fields."
Lily just shrugged, and kept taping the diet cola down. "Y'know, fruit mentos don't actually work to do the whole explosion thing, 'cause they don't have bumps on their surface. The bumps on mint mentos act as points of nucleation."
He was going to protest the change in topic, still wanting to tear down Lily's terrible, godawful idea, to release an otherwise directionless anger, but he was interested in what he was learning. For a moment, it was like Lily was that all-knowing elder again.
"I only found that out 'cause I got the fruit mentos and then found out it didn't work," she laughs, destroying the image in August's head. She pulls out an open pack of fruit mentos, and offers it to him.
He takes one, because, whatever. Lily's an idiot, but at least she's a generous idiot.
Such an idiot.
A self-destructive, stupid, dumb, idiot idiot.
She doesn't listen as well as she used to. She heeds no warnings, follows no orders. She ignores others' problems, and sometimes even her own.
August's not sure if he wants her to go back to before before before, or if he'd be fine if he could just go back to before. Roy does all the housework, now, and August thinks for one, regretful moment that it was about time for their turn to hurry up and grow up. Like it's a Cleary sibling ritual.
After he has that thought, he tries to help Roy, but because it's after, he only becomes a hindrance. Roy gives him a smile--so genuine that, for a second, August wants to shake it off of them--and takes their own, not-ruined mop into the room to start cleaning it properly. August provides company, but he has to leave before long. Roy gives him a parting smile, still so full of warmth that August isn't sure if he's jealous.
All he can feel, sans short moments of embarrassment or humour, is... not quite anger. Closer to pissy, August admits to himself, begrudgingly using the terminology Eva had so eloquently provided. Like he's always walking a line too thin.
Lily doesn't do anything at all.
Other than be an idiot.
If it was before before, after, or somewhere in between, August still isn't sure. Not sure when he felt disappointment, a feeling he covered up by constantly feeding his own anger, exaggerating his posturing.
"Do you hate me?" Lily asked him, once.
"What?"
"Forget it."
August knows that Lily noticed he didn't say 'I love you,' or even a 'no.' Just a ‘what,’ like the question was so out-of-the-blue, August couldn't even think of an answer.
August hopes that Lily thinks it's because August thought it was just that ridiculous of a question.
August thinks that Lily believes it's because August can't say that he hates her, but he also can't say that he loves her.
August wonders which one is the truth.
August wonders if Lily hates him, loves him, or neither.
August still wonders when he first started being disappointed in Lily.
and i've trained myself to give up on the past (Lily Cleary)
Lily doesn’t usually like to mince words. She doesn’t like to draw lines in the sand, and she doesn’t like to see things in black and white, like there’s only good and bad and like they can only exist completely independently of one another.
But she still does.
She avoids tough conversations by putting on a facade that’s not really a facade, a mask that’s just her own face, and she divides her life in terms of before and after, and she thinks of before as all bad and after as all good, and she tries to ignore all the bad that came with after, and she manages to succeed thanks to the mask that she’s taken off, thanks to the mask that’s not a mask and the facade that’s not a facade, thanks to doing the things she usually doesn’t like to do.
Lily wonders if it could be considered faking it, if it’s real, and if it’s only faking it because she’s not like she was before.
She was only responsible because she had to be, back then. But she didn’t want to be. But that’s how she acted, how she grew up, how she ended up developing. Before the total 180, she wonders if that was the faking it, if now is the not really faking it faking it, and she doesn’t really know and she feels like, in her entirety, that maybe she’s actually nothing but disguises and camouflage. Like she’s been made up of masks and facades her whole life.
“I don’t wanna go to school,” August had whined. It was a Wednesday, Lily knew, because it had to be, because after school, Lily had to send August to his math tutor, and he only went to his math tutor on Wednesdays. At least, that’s how it was before.
“Well,” Lily sighed, already exhausted, “are you sick? Or do you just not wanna go?”
August pouted, his glare shifting from Lily to the ground. She placed a hand on his forehead.
“I don’t think you’re sick, August. Sorry, buddy,” Lily patted his shoulder, “but you’ve gotta go. It’s important to get a good education.”
“Why?”
Lily wanted to tear her hair out. They were already running late. The bus was gonna be there any minute, and here August was, delaying and whining and stomping his feet like a petulant child.
And then Lily remembered that that was what he was, and Lily sighed again in an attempt to release the tension knotting her veins.
It didn’t work.
But she sucked it up.
“Because,” she said, voice barely tinged with animosity, “education’s super important. Keep going to school, and you’ll even get to learn ‘francis,’ just like me.”
August’s eyes widened at that.
(And how strange it was to think of August with two eyes.)
Jackpot.
“Right? You only know the bare minimum, ‘cause I study at home when you’re around sometimes, but keep going to school and study well, and you’ll know almost as much as me,” she grinned, picking up August’s backpack from up off the floor. “Now, c’mon, you’re gonna be late.”
August got to his bus quickly enough, but the sitter for Roy was late, and Lily missed her bus, and so she ran all the way to school that day.
Lily wonders, always wonders, thinks, questions what was real for her. There were days she questioned her love for her siblings, despised them for the burden they placed on her, and there were other days where she blamed her parents, and then there were days where she blamed herself.
She never really understood that last one.
Was the blame real? Was the hatred real? Was the love real?
Sometimes, she didn’t feel real.
Even now, in the after, after she renounced the facade that wasn’t a facade, or maybe it was one, maybe she’s too deep in layers of masks and veils, she doesn’t feel like she’s real. Because, again, she doesn’t know what’s what, sometimes. It’s confusing. She hates it. That’s why, even though she doesn’t like drawing lines in the sand, dividing things into two, she still does, because it’s easier that way.
So, before is bad. After is good. Even when it’s not.
Going into the after only happened once August got old enough, anyway. It’s not like Lily was planning on leaving two children floundering.
Just one.
She didn’t really like to think about Roy.
“I’m gonna take up skateboarding,” she had said to August and Roy, on the cusp of before and after.
“Oh, awesome!”
Lily smiled at August’s enthusiasm.
“You’ll be careful, right?”
Lily tried not to grimace at Roy’s concern.
She’s been careful for so long. She’s had enough of it. More than enough. Who was Roy to dictate how she lived her life, when they had played a part in pulling her strings for so long?
“Of course,” Lily replied. “I’ll wear helmets, knee pads, and everything.”
Roy had smiled, so warm and so childishly, that the venom Lily had faded, leaving nothing but exhaustion.
“I can’t wait to see what tricks you learn, then!” Roy beamed.
“Yeah, same here,” August chimed in. “Maybe when you’re done learning, you could teach me, afterwards.”
Lily tried her best to smile at that, and she doesn’t know if she succeeded or failed, because she’s always been teaching him. Teaching August everything. She didn’t want to be selfish, but fuck, she wanted something to herself.
“Of course,” she lied.
And then that thing happened, and then August never really asked again about it, and so Lily never brought it up either, happy that she could still keep this one impulsive thing she simply wanted to herself.
It felt good and bad. Strangely contradictory, but she just leaned into the good, and ignored the bad, dividing the two like the border between the shore and the waves, dismissing whenever the waves made it just a little bit farther than she wanted them to.
But even in the after, when she became reckless, impulsive, really got into skateboarding, she still had responsibilities. Slowly, she abandoned them, leaving August and Roy to their own devices more and more frequently. Then there was that thing, and August didn’t really need to be tended to anymore at all. At least, in Lily’s opinion. And, at that point, she had left pretty much all of it behind, anyway. Roy grew up, too.
So it was a while before she was really responsible for anything again.
“Is that a ferret?” August asked, condescending. In that new pissy (thanks, Eva) tone of voice of his, one that he developed after that thing.
“Yep!” Lily grinned, holding up her brand new pet proudly.
“Why.” August frowned, crossing his arms.
“Because.”
August scoffed, and diverted his gaze for a moment, before returning to glance at the remarkably cute new addition to the family.
“Cute, right?” she smirked. Lily held the ferret up closer to his face.
August scoffed again, and he turned his head away. “Not that cute,” he muttered. Lily didn’t miss how he, once again, looked back at the little fuzzy creature.
Lily only laughed, and she began petting him.
“...What’s his name.”
Lily suppressed further laughter, and said, without missing a beat, “Ollie.”
August grimaced. “What. Like the skateboard thing,” he deadpanned.
“Exactly!”
August slumped in his chair and sighed.
“Whatever, it’s a good name,” she stuck out her tongue. “Hey, did you know a group of ferrets is called a business?”
August stared at her for a moment, that look in his eye that Lily recognized as curiousity and admiration overwhelming his features.
Lily wanted to frown. It’s not like it was that interesting of a fact. It’s not anything to be impressed by.
But then, it’s been so long since she last saw that look on his face, and she didn’t know if she loved it or hated it or missed it.
“Maybe I should start a business with this lil’ guy,” she snuggled Ollie closer. “Ferret and Human Inc. We make both.”
That look immediately disappeared from his face, replaced with annoyance, or disgust, or… something.
Lily didn’t know if she wanted to be upset, or if she wanted to feel relaxed.
Lily doesn’t know if she prefers before or after, actually.
Maybe it’s a consequence of drawing lines in the sand the way that she does, even when she doesn’t like doing it. Or maybe she does like it.
It’s hard to be certain, but there’s a lot of things she doesn’t like doing that she does anyway, and that doesn’t include not mincing her words, and so she softens these blows to herself by lying and lying and lying.
She doesn’t like to do it, but she still does.

"I DON'T THINK YOU KNOW THE WOMAN YOU'RE SLEEPING NEXT TO..."
Who the FUCK Voight thinks he is? I don't know why I'm so shocked, after the bullshit in 8x14 e 8x16 where Voight threated Hailey like garbage, insunuated that she's some sort of blood thirsty monster like he is ("You wanted this didn't you"), and all but said Jay is a Saint is too good to her ("We have to keep Jay the way he is")! The phrase that he said to Jay "I don't think you know the woman you're sleeping next to" is so vile and despicable that (I confess) I didn't expect from Voight! As I still very angry with this phrase of has that I can't see things cleary! I can only deduce that he doesn't consider Hailey suitable to Jay!
Could you clarify for me what goes on in this man's contradictory head?
Thanks for all
The whole situation is manipulative on so many levels. We’ve watched for several episodes as Voight continues to get into Hailey’s head a little more and more. First it’s in 8x14 insinuating that she is going to change Jay. Then we have 8x16 insinuating that she wanted to do things Voight’s way with Roy. In 9x01, he tries to paint the picture to Hailey that she did a good thing by saving him and that’s all that should matter. He dismisses her trauma and her guilt and says “since you saved my life, I say this is okay.”
For Voight to look at Jay and say that he doesn’t know Hailey is just another example of this manipulation of the situation. He is painting Hailey as the problem. She’s the one who did somethigg and that’s the reason Jay doesn’t know her. He’s not acknowledging he’s the one who got in her head and is manipulating her into keeping this secret.
Voight is trying to justify his actions. Manipulators will often use tactics to justify their actions and keep the blame off of them. Here we see distraction from the actual issue (by making the issue about jay and Hailey’s relationship) and projection onto Hailey (by saying she’s the one who wanted this.) Whether these actions are conscious or not, it feels as though Voight is trying to remedy his role in the situation and absolve himself of any guilt.

Note
I somehow noticed something and I would like to know how you see it
Whenever Jay and Hailey make a bad decision, something good comes out of it in the end
•in 8x14 Jay warns Hailey to stay away from Vo*ght as it can end badly (+ the "foreshadowing" with the jeweler and the question "professionally or privately") -> in 8x16 Hailey kills Roy and her proposal follows - > which leads to marriage in 9x09 ❤
•in 9x09 Jay makes the "deal" to protect vo*ght from himself -> in 9x20 comes the Mommy and Daddy scene as a possible "foreshodowing" -> in 9x21/9x22 comes the explosion and Jay and Hailey have a disagreement Jay wants to go to anna and vo*ght and make it right and hailey follows him and gets in the car with him which then causes hailey to shoot anna and she dies even though many say upstead is ok i could kind of see that jay could be plagued by guilt and blame themselves and even if there was no pregnant hailey in the final maybe it could happen in 10x09
In another answer I said that I don't think they plan from one season to the next but while I read this question I remembered something, that was before Gwen become showrunner, and since she did thinks have been cleary diferent. So now I think you could be right anon. I still don't think all the forshadowing was for nothing.

Ten Favorite Ships from the four main Arrowverse Shows:
Rules: For this list Crossover Pairings were excluded if one partner is confined to their own show. However if the character changes show later he or she is on the list. This is my blog, this is my list, it is in no way objective, everyone is entiled to their own opinion, so please don’t reblog or answer just to tell me how much you disagree with me. You can’t quantify love, well except with stupid lists like this, just because a ship is not on this list does not mean I don’t like it - except when it does - so…. yeah, here we go
  10 besten Ships „Arrow“:
 10. Merlance (Tommy Merlyn/Laurel Lance)
I always liked the unlikely story of Tommy Merlyn actually conquering Laurel Lances heart.
 9. Overarcher (KaraX/Oliver QueenX)
While I don’t think our Kara would ever really give Oliver a shot, this one was undoubtly True Love, well at least for Oliver X, Kara X did love him, yes, but she was much more in line with duty than he ever was. Which is what actually makes this dynamic this interesting.
 8.      GreenAtom (Oliver Queen/Ray Palmer)
A very underapprecaited Ship that I love dearly. Ray und Oliver together have so much potential.
 7. SmoakDetective (Donna Smoak/Quentin Lance)
Quentin needs love, and while Donna is not the first person you would think of when you would think of a potential partner for him, she is the best fit for the role. She challenges him and makes his day brighter. And he treats her well.
 6.      Olivarry (Oliver Queen/Barry Allen)
As unlucky as Olivers Love Live is, maybe that’s the case because the actual love of his live happens to be a man which he is not willing to admit to himself.
 5.      Raylicity (Ray Palmer/Felicity Smoak)
Cute and entertraining those two are actually a much better fit than Oliver and Felcitiy, maybe only a little bit too simelar as Oliver has pointed out.
 4.      Nysara (Nyssa al Ghul/Sara Lance)
We love Sara and we love Nyssa, why shouldn’t we love them together?
 3.      Throy (Thea Queen/Roy Harper)
This is the one ship that everyone agreed on was to be endgame.
 2.      Lauriver (Laurel Lance/Oliver Queen)
This was supposed to be endgame, and the fact that it wasn’t is frankly just an insult to anyone who knows anything about Green Arrow in the comics.
 1.      Cannarow (Sara Lance/Oliver Queen)
So here it is my Arrow OTP.
Tumblr media
Die 10 besten Ships „The Flash“:
 10    Elongsue (Ralp Dibnyh/Sue) Dearborn
This was supposed to be an epic love story with endgame potential.
 9.      Eobarry (Eobard Thawne/Barry Allen)
Fanboy Eobard might have come to hate Barry, but a part of him never stopped loving the scarlet speedster as we all know.
 8.      Elongflash (Ralph Dibny/Barry Allen)
I frankly never understood why people did not ship them more and there are so little fanfics about those two, I mean it’s a classic love story really.
 7.      Allenbert (Barry Allen/Julian Albert)
For a long time I thought that that would be the reveal about Julians problem with Barry. Appearantly so did the actors.
 6.      Jocile (Joe West/Cecile Horton)
They are cute and sexy together, have a mature realtionship that presents new obstacles the navigate around together, and it’s an eternal shame that their planned Season 5 sub-plot was cut short
 5.      Coldflash (Leoanrd Snart/Barry Allen)
Leonard flirts with everything that moves, but Barry has a special place in his heart.
 4. Westhawne (Iris West/Eddie Thawne)
And he was ready to fight destiny itself. For Iris. And she did love him. A lot.
 3.      Thallen (Eddie Thawne/Barry Allen)
Barry und Eddie were crushing hard on each other, there is no denying that.
 2.      Westallen (Iris West/Barry Allen)
Westallen ist destiny in every timeline, in every universe, it’s a as simple as that.
 1.      Westhallen (Iris West/Eddie Thawne/Barry Allen)
This is how you solve a love triangle, that does not need to be one, when all three parties have certain feelings for all the other members of the triangle.
Tumblr media
 Die 10 besten Ships „Supergirl“:
 10.  Lanvers (Alex Danvers/Maxwell Lord)
Yes, I know Alex is lesbian, but this ship ist just too yummy.
 8.      Killiam (Kara Danvers/William Dey)
Frozen burn realtionship that deserves to pick up speed. Kara deserves a love life, please!
  9.      Karolsen (Kara Danvers/James Olsen)
Back in Season 1 of Supergirl I actually shipped this.  I loved Kara and genuinly wanted her to get the guy of her dreams. I mean she got heart eyes, ever time James walked in the room, but she also was adult enough to stettle for „just friends“.
 7.      Dolsen (Alex Danvers/Kelly Olsen)
Kelly is a much better fit for Alex than Maggie ever was, because she is less selfcentered and much more willing to compromise and they are more simelar. And in the end all the obstacles those two faced they were willing to overcome together.
 5.Brainia (Brainiac-5/Nia Nal)
Brainy and Nia and their relationship were the only genuine good things about the first half of Season 4.
 4.Winniac-5 (Winn Schott/Brainiac-5)
I am one out of two persons in the world who ships this, but I ship it hard.
 3.      Clois (Clark Kent/Lois Lane)
Clois has been done very compelling by many other actors before, but the Arrowverse-Version still managed to get their own spin on it and to come across super sweet.
 2.      Sanvers (Maggie Sawyer/Alex Danvers)
Ah, Sanvers, they took the world in storm and didn’t we love them.
 1.      Karamel (Kara Danvers/Mon-El)
Their chemistry jumped from the screen right into our hearts.
Tumblr media
Die 10 besten Ships „Legends of Tomorrow“:
 10.  Saramaya (Sara Lance/Amaya Jiwe)
I really don’t know why everyone is going on about Kendra and Sara, when they could be going on about this ship were there is actual tension and actual chemistry there.
 11.  Coldray (Leo SnartX/Ray Terrill)
Those two are just two cute and sadly were wiped out of existence by Crisis, but I still love them.
 8.      Atomsteelwavevixen (Ray Palmer/Nate Heywood/Mick Roey/Amaya Jiwe)
I prefere Steelatom and Vixenwave as bros, but as a foursome those four rock the libido and the Waverider.
 7.      Captains3 (Sara Lance/Rip Hunter/Leonard Snart)
Given that Sara and Rip, Sara and Leonard und Leonard and Rip would not last together, my solution to this would be to get together as a threesome.
 6.      Constangreen (John Constantine/Gary Green)
We love Gary, and Gary loves John, and John does actually love Gary.
 5.Avalance (Ava Sharpe/Sara Lance)
At this point Avalance is cleary planned to be endgame and rightly so.
 4.Hellcanary (John Constantine/Sara Lance)
Two broken souls, two players who played which each other and found solace in each others arms – two bi-sexual icons together
 3.Vixensteel (Amaya Jiwe/Nate Heywood)
I loved the star crossed romance between Nate and Amaya, and the fact that they defied history and was heart broken when they gave up after all.
 2.      Timecanary (Rip Hunter/Sara Lance)
Out of all her many suitors Rip is the one I would want to see her ending up with.
 1.      Atomwave (Ray Palmer/Mick Rory)
This is my Legends-OTP and I am still not over the fact that Ray is out of the show and so is this ship!

The Weird History of Friday the 13th Comics
https://ift.tt/2QaV9j1
Friday the 13th boasts some of the strangest movie tie-in comics ever made. We hit the bloody highs and lows. Mostly lows.
facebook
twitter
tumblr
Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees has been part of pop-culture for decades. It shouldn’t be surprising that he’s had his share of comic book adventures, what with him essentially being a supervillain in a story with no superheroes. Granted, he’s a one-dimensional supervillain with an incredibly vague origin story, but he’s been memorable enough to land him a dozen movie appearances. Many have told his tale in comic form and since the early '90s, he’s been represented by three different publishers.
The surprising thing to me is that the earliest Jason comic is only in the early 90s. For comparison, the RoboCop comics all stretched across the franchise’s entire existence. They were around for all four movies as well as the stretch where he was just about nostalgia. Jason Voorhees didn’t get the same treatment. For the most part, they missed the boat.
Topps Comics first picked up the license and Jason’s comic book debut came in July of 1993. Two comics came out this month with Jason in them, so it’s hard to say what was his very first appearance. One of the two comics was Satan’s Six #4 by Tony Isabella and John Cleary. We’re already bonkers out the gate here. Satan’s Six was part of the Secret City Saga, where Topps created a big story using a bunch of leftover Jack Kirby ideas that he never did anything with in the form of several miniseries that intertwined (think Grant Morrison’s Seven Soldiers). It didn’t last long enough to finish and with Satan’s Six, it’s no wonder.
The comic is a comedy about the demonic Odious Kamodious, who has his own team of agents out to create chaos in his name, only they always screw up. In the very beginning of this issue, Kamodious gets in an argument with one of his demons Frightful and threatens to replace him. He summons Jason Voorhees, who proceeds to talk like Rorschach and try to kill anything nearby.
Tumblr media
Anyone else find randomly and casually tossing Jason into a superhero universe’s continuity really weird?
Frightful and teammate Bluedragon go after Jason, but he responds by throwing them a couple times and saying, “HRMM,” a lot. Despite only appearing for a couple of pages, Jason says that six times. Kamodious summons him back where he found him and starts making a blatant reference about Jason going to Hell. The angelic Pristine interrupts and calls out how this was a pointless cameo to justify advertising Jason on the cover, which came at the cost of continuing their very story. And at that point, readers stopped caring.
As Kamodious referenced, Jason was at the time starring in Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, otherwise known as Friday the 13th Part IX. Based on the screenplay, the comic is written by Andy Mangels and drawn by Cynthia Martin.
Tumblr media
That’s how far down the pipeline we are. By this point, the movie franchise was in dire straits. By the time any comic company thinks of doing anything with Friday the 13th, we’re already at the ninth movie, which was the last Jason movie for eight years. The really bizarre one.
If you haven’t seen it or don’t remember, Jason Goes to Hell is the movie where the FBI finally decides to do something about Jason and blows him to kingdom come in the first few minutes, onlit turns out that he can’t be killed unless stabbed in the heart by another Voorhees (though the comic keeps spelling it “Vorhees”). So Jason’s heart hypnotizes the coroner into eating it and he goes around vomiting the heart into people’s throats to change hosts until he can find and kill the rest of his bloodline.

It’s an example of knowing that you have to do something new and fresh, yet still driving way off the road. Also, if you’re all about drawings of bare asses, this is the comic for you!
Tumblr media
But really, all anyone remembers Jason Goes to Hell for is that cameo at the end when Freddy Krueger pulls down Jason’s mask and cackles. That was the original “Nick Fury asks Tony Stark to join the Avengers” moment. It just, you know, took ten years, is all.
Topps didn’t want to wait to give us a big slasher icon crossover and while they didn’t get the rights to Freddy, they got the next best thing. Okay, they didn’t get Michael Meyers, but the next best thing after that. No, they didn’t get Tevye from Fiddler on the Roof, but—Listen, they got Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, okay? More specifically, we got Jason vs. Leatherface, a three-part series by Nancy Collins, David Imhoff, and Jeff Butler.
Tumblr media
Despite being released in 1995, the chronology is very choosy, ignoring the history of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre stuff to make sure Leatherface and his brothers Cook and Hitchhiker are both alive. As for Jason, this takes place after Part VI, where he’s chained to the bottom of Camp Crystal Lake. Some corporate types have the lake drained of all the toxic grossness and Jason goes with it. He kind of wanders around, kills a bunch of people on train, and eventually comes across Sawyerville, where Leatherface and Hitchhiker are stalking some poor soul. Jason ends up getting in a scrap with them, where he disarms Leatherface (not literally for once), kills their victim, and then – in a surprising act – hands Leatherface his chainsaw.

There’s this feeling of acceptance between the two parties, leading to Jason being practically adopted into their family. This leads to a really awesome moment where Cook asks him his name. Since these guys need to start calling him Jason and he doesn’t actually speak, Collins goes about it in a clever way.
Tumblr media
Through this partnership, we see the differences. While Jason is a ruthless murderer, he isn’t so much a sadist, at least not as much as the Sawyer family. He’ll kill the victims, but Hitchhiker will get on his case for doing it too quickly and not torturing anyone. Mainly, Jason gets along with them due to the way he sees his younger self in Leatherface. For once, he feels sympathy and it drives him to hate Hitchhiker for constantly being such a dick. From there, it becomes Jason vs. the three brothers, where Leatherface will protect his family, even if he does show appreciation for Jason standing up for him.

There wouldn’t be any more Jason comics for a decade until Avatar Press picked up the license in 2005. I had a lot of bad stuff to say about Avatar in the RoboCop article, but here, the ugly, mean-spirited, blood-and-chunks-covered style is a perfect home for Friday the 13th. If anything, it’s a fitting response to how most of the Friday the 13th movies were edited to oblivion by the MPAA to hide all the gore. Now we can see Jason punch a guy in the head so hard that it comes out his ass!
Tumblr media
Avatar mostly released a bunch of one-shots, starting with Friday the 13th Special by Brian Pulido and Mike Wolfer. The Avatar Friday the 13th comics have some actual strong ideas mixed in there, but they also rely on doing the same thing over and over again...much like the movies, but in a different way. While every single comic of theirs has at least one softcore sex scene, there’s also a constant theme of the 1% screwing things up for everyone. Like in Friday the 13th Special, it’s about the children of the man who previously owned Camp Crystal Lake. The daughter, a shrewd businesswoman, insists on not letting that land go to waste despite the piles and piles of dead bodies showing why that’s a bad idea.

To be fair, she goes about it the right way. If Jason’s hanging around the woods, just hire a ton of military guys to take him out. That basically took care of Jason in the very beginning of the ninth movie, didn’t it? Too bad being in a comic book has caused him to go through a major power creep, and he’s now able to power through having a huge chunk of him blown off by a grenade launcher, as it just heals up in seconds. Jason’s way too overpowered and that continues on for the next year of comics.
Pulido and Wolfer would get back together to do a three-parter called Bloodbath and it’s easily the best thing to come out of the Avatar run. It has some serious dialogue issues, but the basic idea could have been the basis for a Friday the 13th movie and I would be totally okay with it. It actually comes across as a prototype for Cabin in the Woods.
Tumblr media
It has to do with Camp Crystal Lake being opened yet again, this time with ten teen counselors brought in early to get acquainted a day or so before the campers are said to show up. Their boss is Kevin Carny, a kindly southern guy who appears to be really laid back about everything. He wants everyone to be responsible during the daytime, but at night, they’re welcome to enjoy the hot tub, an excess of beer, and each other’s naked company. The counselors all hit it off and immediately pair up with no problem. In fact, they pair up a little too easily, like they were handpicked. Discovered through some really unnatural dialogue, they all come to realize that all ten of them are orphans and have no families. Strange. It’s almost like if something were to happen to them all, nobody would really care enough to look into it.
read more: The Best Horror Movies on Netflix
Naturally, there’s more to Carny than meets the eye. Much like in Jason X, the military and corporations are very into the idea of bringing Jason in for the sake of studying his healing factor and weaponizing him. The camp is nothing more than bait. It helps that the protagonists, Violet and Rich, are actually fairly likeable and relatable compared to every other human character in Avatar’s comics. You end up getting a story of the would-be victims vs. the military vs. the unstoppable killer. It actually has a really good ending too, which will be ruined months later.
Tumblr media
Around this time, Avatar released the Jason X Special by Pulido and Sebastian Fiumara. Yes, a Jason X comic. The movie is already a few years old at this point and I don’t think anyone cared about it enough to clamor for more Jason X in any form, but here we are. As it turns out, when Uber Jason was blasted to a lake on Earth Two at the end of the movie, he was really back on the original Earth. A woman named Kristen, one of the few remaining humans on the planet, tricked the ship into turning back to Earth for the sake of getting her hands on Uber Jason.
read more: The Best Horror Movies on HBO Go
Kristen’s boyfriend Neil is dying and she needs some Voorhees DNA to potentially cure him. Even though she is able to capture Uber Jason with some nanites, you can imagine that this is a bad idea. It becomes a big, confusing mess, where Pamela Voorhees goes from being a voice in Jason’s head to being a machine ghost able to control all the nanites, leading to lots of human-like androids being slaughtered. Uber Jason is shot into space, where he stumbles across a party-based space ship.
Tumblr media
That leads us right into the two-parter Jason vs. Jason X by Mike Wolfer. Really? Is that even a contest? That’s like having the regular version of the Hulk fight a super-pissed off Hulk. The story of this one is more contrived than even the beginning of Jason Takes Manhattan. So there’s a piece of Jason’s skull and hockey mask from the Jason X movie that wasn’t part of the regeneration process that created Uber Jason. When that ship was blown up, the chunk of skull floated around in space until – TOTAL COINCIDENCE – it now drifts into the very party ship where Uber Jason is currently slaughtering everyone. The ship’s cloning machine builds a new body out of dead victims and Jason is reborn! Fully clothed too, which I suppose I shouldn’t be complaining about. I can live my entire life without seeing his hockey stick.
read more: The Best Horror Movies on Hulu
It takes the whole first issue for the two Jasons to meet up and the entire second issue is them fighting while anyone who crosses paths with the brawl gets chopped up. The fight brings them to Earth Two, where, big surprise, Uber Jason wins. He tears Jason’s brain out, shoves it into his own brain, and reminisces about his mother. He’s also chilling out in the woods near a lake, so even though the Jason X Special changed up the movie’s ending, this comic puts it back the way the writers found it. You know, just in case they were to ever make another Jason X movie.
Tumblr media
The last book from Avatar is Friday the 13th: Fearbook by Mike Wolfer and Sebastian Fiumara. It’s a direct follow-up to Bloodbath and is especially pointless. It’s basically about killing off anyone who survived Bloodbath without any real drama. Sure, it makes sense to have the government people behind the events of that story taken out, but there’s no actual plot. Jason just effortlessly kills everyone for two dozen pages.
read more: 31 Best Streaming Horror Movies
Also, the art is really bad in the sequential sense. It seems to go from point A to C from panel to panel with no sensical movement. For instance, in Bloodbath, they were able to stop Jason by freezing him. The only reason he was able to escape was Violet’s doing. Makes 100% perfect sense that they’d just try that again, right?
Tumblr media
And now Jason is able to shrug it off completely to the point that there’s no sign of him being frozen one panel later. What’s up with that?
The ending suffers from the same problem. Violet is backed up to a window and Jason is coming. She decides to take her chances and makes a leap of faith, hoping the trees will break her fall. She jumps and the perspective makes it look like she’s at least ten feet away from the window. Suddenly, Jason has her by the neck and drags her back in.

Anyway, Jason would then move on to the next publisher, Wildstorm, in 2007. Wildstorm mainly gave us a bunch of two-parters, but started it with a six-issue miniseries simply called Friday the 13th by Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti, Adam Archer, and Peter Guzman.
Tumblr media
For the most part, it’s a basic, by-the-numbers Friday the 13th story in comic form, just handled competently. They’re reopening Camp Crystal Lake again. A handful of teens are brought in to clean up the cabins. Sex and drugs and beer are had. Jason shows up and starts killing people. Same old shit.
read more: The 25 Best Horror Movies You've Never Seen
At least the cast of victims isn’t so bad. They aren’t great, but they at least have more personality and dimension than the characters in the Avatar Press comics, easy as that is to do. The drawback is that for the sake of conflict, they’re almost all over-the-top in terms of being assholes. Like there’s a nerdy hippy guy who looks to be potentially psychotic and everyone shits on him for zero reason. For one of the characters it makes sense, since it’s established that she’s had to put up with his company for years and she’s a terrible person, but everyone else snaps at him like he’s Donnie from Big Lebowski.
The comic plays up the supernatural aspects of Friday the 13th more than just Jason surviving taking a machete to the neck. Not only do they establish that the lake is haunted by the ghosts of a hundred murdered children, but the final issue even explains that the area is literally cursed due to some settlers murdering a Native American shaman.
Tumblr media
Otherwise, it’s nothing special.
Marc Andreyko and Shawn Moll give us Pamela’s Tale, a two-parter where Pamela Voorhees explains her life story to a camp counselor while giving her a ride to Camp Crystal Lake. Naturally, she also murders her, but still keeps telling the story, mainly about raising Jason and how she’s been out to kill anyone she feels is responsible for his death.
read more: The Conjuring Movie Universe Timeline Explained
We also see Jason’s father depicted as a drunken wife-beater and massive dude (he had to inherit it from somewhere) who is killed because Pamela’s afraid that if she tells him she’s pregnant, he’ll beat her so badly that she’ll have a miscarriage. Oh, and she’s also whispering conversations with “Jason” much like she does at the end of the first movie.
Tumblr media
Jason’s birth defects are explained both between his father’s treatment of his mother and the fact that Pamela is constantly in places filled with cigarette smoke. It hits comedic levels once we see the doctor smoking a cigarette while delivering the baby. That’s dark as hell but I had to laugh.

Jason Aaron and Adam Archer team up for How I Spent My Summer Vacation, another two-parter. I’m not sure if this is the best Friday the 13th comic, but it’s definitely the most fun. It’s about a little boy named Davie Falkner who is at summer camp. At Camp Crystal Lake. They opened the goddamn thing AGAIN! CRIPES! Anyway, Davie has a bone disorder that gives him a malformed head and will likely kill him in five years. While he has normal intelligence, he looks an awful lot like Jason’s young self, albeit with hair. He’s constantly teased for his looks, but that’s a picnic compared to having Jason Voorhees show up to kill everyone.
Tumblr media
After lots of campers, councilors, and cops are killed, Jason picks up Davie and drags him away, kicking and screaming. The only other survivor is the sheriff, who was so hopped up on meth that he accidentally shot up two councilors, and then hacked them up with a machete to cover his tracks and blame it on Jason. Finding out that Davie’s still alive makes him want to make sure he can kill the last witness.
read more: The Underrated Horror Movies of the 1990s
Meanwhile, we get what is essentially a Batman and Robin origin story with Jason and Davie. It’s awesome and I wish it was longer. Jason never speaks or makes any gestures, but he keeps Davie safe out of feeling like a kindred spirit. Jason would go kill people having a picnic, wrap their food in a blanket, return to Davie, and throw it to him. Davie goes from being dragged around against his will to following his new hero.
Tumblr media
Davie idolizes Jason for being like him, only able to not take shit from anyone who would bully him. That Jason is an even bigger bully than anyone else is lost on Davie, but it’s nice to see Jason make a connection for once in his after-life. Plus with the comedic psycho sheriff, Jason gets to actually play the role of anti-hero here. Granted, he still kills so many undeserving people, but the book is still sort of cute.

Yet another two-parter comes in the form of Bad Land, which is by Ron Marz and Mike Huddleston. It’s about two different stories from different times that run parallel. One is a present-day story about a trio of hikers who come across a cabin in the middle of a huge storm and become victims of Jason. The other takes place a couple centuries earlier, where three fur trappers enter a teepee to escape a similar storm and come across a Native American woman and her baby. Horrible things happen to the woman and her child, shortly before her husband arrives. They blow his face off with a rifle shot and he runs off, only to plot his revenge.
Tumblr media
Yep. We have the Proto-Jason. It isn’t outright said whether he’s just super pissed enough to fight through the wound or if he’s a full-on murder zombie, but considering he lacks the wound when we see his rampage, it looks like the latter.
Huh. Wonder whatever happened to that guy.
The last normal type of Jason comic released by Wildstorm is The Abuser & the Abused by Joshua Hale Fialkov and Andy B. Andy B’s art makes this easily the best-looking Friday the 13th comic by a landslide. Lot of great expressions and action in there.
Tumblr media
The issue is kind of an alternate take on How I Spent My Summer Vacation. It deals with a girl who is constantly abused. Her boyfriend beats her, her classmates make fun of her, her father and stepmother bully her, and no authority figure will help her in any way. She takes it upon herself to strike back against anyone who’s wronged her and part of her plan involves luring her boyfriend to Camp Crystal Lake (which is not open for once. Thank God). Then when Jason appears to do what Jason does best, the girl gets mad because this is her kill and the two murderers throw down. Totally worth checking out for the fantastic fight scene.
Now we get to the grand finale in the form of two six-issue miniseries. Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash started in early 2008, based on a script treatment for a sequel to the Freddy vs. Jason movie that brings the Evil Dead hero into the mix that would never come to be. The Jeff Katz screenplay is adapted by James Kuhoric with art by Jason Craig. It’s generally okay. It’s nothing especially great or especially awful. It comes up with a satisfying enough story that brings together the three horror icons, has them play off each other, and gives us a big enough body count.
Tumblr media
Freddy is able to convince Jason to do his bidding by banging his mother. At least, that’s what Jason sees in his nightmare, where Freddy acts like his new step-father and has “Pamela” tell Jason to listen to his authority. Freddy wants him to fetch the Necronomicon and wouldn’t you know it, Ash Williams is working at a nearby hardware store for the holidays.
read more - The Weird History of Michael Myers Halloween Comics
What’s great about it is that we actually have a real protagonist to cheer for, who we know has enough plot armor to stay alive. The Freddy vs. Jason movie didn’t have anyone nearly as likeable as Ash. The main drawback is that Jason is the third wheel, mostly overshadowed by the other two co-stars. This becomes a bigger problem in the sequel, which I’ll get to in just a bit.
Tumblr media
Sorry, I was wrong. The main drawback is that despite Jason Craig’s art starting incredibly strong, it becomes rushed to hell by the time he hits the final issue. That’s too bad, since the final battle between the two is excellent outside of that. Freddy is pumped up with power from the Necronomicon and Jason is maskless and replaced his dismembered hand with a machete. Ash is bemused, noting the lack of originality.
By the end, Freddy and Jason are both defeated for the time being, but the Necronomicon opens to a page that’s very reminiscent of the movie poster for Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors, only this time, Ash is leading the siege.
Tumblr media
That leads us to Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash: Nightmare Warriors by the same creative team, though with Cruddie Torian doing a bit of fill-in work. Sadly, Jason Craig’s art takes a huge dive, even worse than before. Really, the whole comic is a gigantic mess, making it a perfect Friday the 13th comic bookend to whatever the hell was going on with that Satan’s Six issue.
read more: 13 Brilliant Horror Movies Under 90 Minutes Long
It’s a real shame too, because I absolutely love the setup. It’s such a brilliant concept for a climactic finale to Freddy and Jason’s respective series. See, Ash is invited to join a support group of sorts made up of those who have survived encounters with Freddy and/or Jason. So you have a group made up of Maggie Burroughs (Freddy’s Dead), Dr. Neil Gordon (Nightmare on Elm Street 3), Steven Freeman (Jason Goes to Hell), Stephanie Kimble (Steven’s baby daughter from that movie all grown up), Alice Johnson (Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and 5), Jacob Johnson (Alice’s son, also grown up), Tina Shepard (Friday the 13th Part VII), and Rennie Wickham (Friday the 13th Part VIII). Then waiting in the shadows is maverick survivor and quasi-hero of the Friday the 13th franchise, Tommy Jarvis, who wants to take out Jason on his own terms.
Also awesome is Jason’s redesign. For the first half, at least.
Tumblr media
After all the bullshit he’s been through fighting Freddy and Ash in the last book, Jason is barely holding together. He’s got so much battle damage that even if he’s freakishly strong, he looks like’s seconds away from falling apart. Between his jaw being completely fleshless and the bottom part of his hockey mask before destroyed, he’s got this badass skull goalie thing going on.
read more: 28 Alternative Horror Movies Worth Watching
Then Freddy ruins it by making Jason his general and using the Necronomicon to amp up Jason's appearance, cleaning him up and fixing his disfigurements. He also gives him long, black hair, making him look like a generic 90s vigilante. This also allows him to speak for once when he has his final battle with Tommy Jarvis.
Tumblr media
Certainly better than, “HRMM!” at least.
As I said, the book goes completely full-on nuts, especially when it comes to Maggie Burroughs. She is actually Freddy’s daughter and killed him in the sixth Elm Street movie (the last canon one before Freddy vs. Jason). Here, she’s secretly evil and is working for her father. I guess they can get away with it because she’s the hero of the most hated Nightmare on Elm Street, but it’s never explained why she’s suddenly evil. Then not only does she start dressing like a sexy X-Men supervillain, but she starts making out with her father. And he puts his hand down her pants while grabbing her boob with the other. What. The. Fuck?
read more: Nightmare on Elm Street Comics - A Nightmarish History Lesson
Anyway, she’s crushed by a tank a couple of issues later while fighting Jason in the Oval Office. Strange, strange comic. The book has a lot of big ideas, but it’s completely incomprehensible.
What I find interesting is the ending. Freddy’s attempt to cause Hell on Earth via the Necronomicon goes sour and they give him the most final death possible. He’s stripped of his powers, leaving a naked human form, begging for his life. Ash shoots him with his boomstick, killing him. Then some really ill-explained and badly-set-up time-travel happens where the warrant for his arrest from decades ago is now correctly signed, meaning he’ll never become the dream demon and so many deaths are negated. Not only is Freddy done, but he never really started in the first place!
Jason, on the other hand, is stabbed through the chest by Stephanie (which is supposed to be the one thing that can totally kill him for good) and Tommy chops his head off, but his body is missing anyway because one day he’s going to go to space and God forbid we mess around with continuity!
Tumblr media
Gotta protect the sanctity of Jason X, man.
That was the last we’ve seen of Jason Voorhees in comic form and there’s no sign of him coming back any time soon. Despite being such a cinematic icon, there’s only so much you can do with the character. He’s a walking plot device who isn’t allowed to be anything more, nor should he ever be. He’s just an excuse for shock value and mainstream comics have already gotten to that level of mean-spirited violence, making him nothing but obsolete.
Poor guy. Finally DC Comics is about constantly tearing people’s arms off and Jason doesn’t get to play.
Gavin Jasper thinks it’s fitting that Jason is a goalie, considering he's constantly out to stop people from scoring. Follow him on Twitter!

Canada Faces Huge Physical Costs from Climate Change, Making Net Zero a Great Investment
Willcott, N. & Cleary, S. (2022, May 17). Canada faces huge physical costs from climate change, making net zero a great investment. The Conversation. https://theconversation.com/canada-faces-huge-physical-costs-from-climate-change-making-net-zero-a-great-investment-182847
Tumblr media
Neal Willcott and Sean Cleary write: “There has been a lot of discussion in Canada lately about the financial costs of achieving the country’s climate targets. And rightly so. The situation is urgent and we need to act now. Fighting climate change will require a concerted effort, affecting all sectors of the economy. And while there will be great economic opportunity and lots of new jobs in the green economy, there will be considerable disruptions in the workforce, major economic challenges and significant capital investment required.”
“In a new study we recently published with the Institute for Sustainable Finance, we posit that economic value is sacrificed every day that action is not taken to mitigate the economic and ecological risks posed by climate change. Existing economic models agree that losses are unavoidable without change and investment. But questions remained regarding how much value will be lost and how quickly.”
“Our study found that the costs of climate change damage are expected to grow gradually until 2050, around which time there is a sharp increase under all scenarios. By 2070 there is an exponential increase in damages. These dates correspond to two of the significant target dates for achieving net zero noted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in its reports. … We have much to lose. And it should now be clear that tackling climate change more than pays for itself in terms of avoided physical damage alone.”
