List of some movies that I enjoy and the books they’re based on which often have different vibes than the movie but both are equally good in different ways
Howl’s Moving Castle: The book is titled the same but has very different vibes (movie is more whimsical fantasy while book feels more like realistic fantasy if that makes sense) and also has two companion books in which Howl and Sophie make appearances! Book by Dianna Wynne Jones
Kiki’s Delivery Service: The book is titled the same but again very different vibes (Movie Kiki deals with depression and losing your passion and Book Kiki is cute little witch dealing with people’s problems in cute little witch ways) Book by Eiko Kadono
Stardust: Book titled the same but different vibes (movie is intense and life threatening adventures, book is more fun travel adventures and much slower paced) Book by Neil Gaiman
The Secret of Moonacre: The book is titled The Little White Horse (similar to Stardust the book is a lot slower paced and less life threatening adventures but just as fun and interesting as well as a lot of characters have more depth to them than in the movie) Book by Elizabeth Goudge
The Last Unicorn: Book has same name (from what I remember the book is almost word for word exactly like the movie) Book by Peter S Beagle
Ella Enchanted: Book has the same name (ok this one is a little more controversial. In my opinion the book has a lot more depth and is a lot more interesting in the world building and characters, and the movie is a horrible adaptation. But if you look at the movie as a completely separate thing it is still enjoyable and has fun songs and is a classic from my childhood) Book by Gail Carson Levine
Mary and the Witch’s Flower: The book is titled The Little Broomstick (I have yet to read it but I have just checked it out so I will make sure to update this once I’ve read it! I expect the book will probably have better world building as the movie was fun but didn’t have time to go into depth and the mechanics of the witch’s world) Book by Mary Stewart
Earwig and the Witch: Book titled the same (I also have yet to read this book but have just checked it out and will update later. I think it’ll probably be similar to what I expect with the Little Broomstick where it will probably show a more developed world) Book by Dianna Wynne Jones
Ronja the Robber’s Daughter: Technically not a movie but a tv series. Book has the same name (I also haven’t read it but have just checked it out and will update but I think the show was very well done story wise though the animation wasn’t my favorite and I expect that it probably followed the book fairly closely) Book by Astrid Lindgren
Avalon High: Book has same name and similar plot but characters are switched around (this is actually one where I like the movie a lot better. I feel like the book is extremely predictable and does exactly what you expect to happen while the movie switches it up in a fun way that I feel like also makes sense and isn’t just doing it for the shock factor) Book by Meg Cabot
Tales From Earthsea: One book from the Earthsea Cycle has the same name (I’ve only read the first two books and so technically haven’t gotten to the book that the movie has been adapted from but it’s on my list and I will update once I eventually get to it. So essentially I’ve read the prequels that lead up to the events in the movie and I’ve heard the movie is vaguely different but has similar themes and plot points to the book) Books by Ursula K Le Guin
That’s all I can think of for now but if you have any suggestions to add let me know and I’ll see if I’ve watched the movie and read the books and if so I’ll make an addition to this post!

Today TERFs loudly protested ALL KINDS of Pride flags a train station had put up. ALL of them
Because they don't want to see them
Self-hating cis LGB who support TERFs should really start paying attention now
It was never just about trans people
It was never going to stop with trans people
Open your eyes
They hate you too. No matter what they print on their T-shirts
When the leopards come to eat your face, you have no one to blame but yourselves

Hey y’all, I just came up with an idea, and that is a new nickname for the insufferable wretch called “JK Rowling.” I propose that from here on out, we refer to her as the Wicked Bitch of the West. And when the time comes that she leaves this plane of existence, we fill this website with posts saying 🎶 ding dong, the bitch is dead 🎶

Ah yes, J.K. Terfling; the woman who thinks taking medicine to help with mental illnesses is "lazy". The woman who used racist slurs to name her characters and racist symbolism in her story. The woman who cares nothing about women and continually supports people who would have only laughed as her ex husband assaulted her.
Yup, a champion of the gays, gals, and minorities world-wide.

Radfems commonly ask "What did J.K. Rowling do wrong besides say that 'woman' is a real biological category?" as a 'gotcha' and, well...
Tumblr media
(referencing Matt Walsh's documentary, 'What is a Woman')
this is matt walsh (skip to 1:30)
If you don't want to click the link, this is where he says that girls are "most fertile" at 17 and that getting pregnant at 16 was the norm throughout history and that "teen pregnancy" isn't a real problem, only unwed pregnancy.
This is Matt Walsh's blog post explaining exactly what he thinks of feminism.
Tumblr media
This is another post explaining what Matt Walsh thinks of feminism.
This is what Matt Walsh's twitter says
Tumblr media
(Yes, he self-identified as a fascist on Twitter back when the interaction with JKR took place.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If J.K. Rowling agrees with Matt Walsh on 'what a woman is,' she is anti-feminist, misogynistic scum.

As a children's librarian, people who harass fans of Harry Potter indiscriminately really worry me.
Here's why.
1. The majority of Harry Potter fans are children.
I've had people call me disgusting and scum and an embarrassment to my disabled community. I've been suicide baited and have received death threats. All of this can be heavy enough stuff for an adult to deal with.
And then I think of how most of my 700+ elementary-aged students are huge Harry Potter fans. Because, you know, Harry Potter is a children's series. And they also have access to the internet and social media like TikTok and YouTube.
Now imagine the stuff that's been said to me being said to a kid. Because Harry Potter's main audience are KIDS.
2. This black-and-white mentality isn't healthy.
Very few things in life are cut-and-dry good vs bad. And if you employ this kind of thinking in one area of your life, odds are you'll apply it to other areas too(more on that in a moment).
And people who go out of their way to harass people who like Harry Potter don't seem to particularly care about any context beyond "If you like Harry Potter in any way whatsoever you're scum".
It hasn't mattered when I've pointed out that I absolutely and unequivocally think Rowling's TERF views are awful and scummy and wrong. It hasn't mattered that I try my best to consume the content only in ways that won't monetarily support her, (which kids typically can't do, btw). It hasn't mattered that it's literally in my job description to keep up with children's media to procure content for my patrons as well as to be able to hold conversations with them.
3. Saying "You're not allowed to read this without being harassed" is no different from saying a book should be banned.
This is ironic, seeing as the people doing the harassing are also often up in arms about queerphobic and racist book bans (as they should be) while demanding book bans of their own.
Because in their all-or-nothing way of thinking, book bans are only bad when the "bad" people do it.
No. Book bans are always bad, no exceptions.
Book bans aren't bad because they're banning the "good" books, they're bad because banning access to different ideas is always bad. Because every book has a lesson to teach us (perhaps not the lesson intended by the author, but a lesson nonetheless).

I watched a TikTok the other day that asked people about a hypothetical scenario where books also got "reboots" and covers, which ones they'd choose to go under that process, by who, and why. Then I opened the comments only to see that the first one asked Harry Potter to be rewritten by "Uncle Rick" (Rick Riordan, the guy that created Percy Jackson). Others replied saying that, upon re-reading, Rowling's writing was just so awful and filled with misogynistic and racist views, which was "unsurprising because she is a TERF", that they found it to be absolute shit. Others also said that Riordan would've created the series in a way that no-one would get those Nazi-esque tattoos in the fandom (for those who do not known, the Death Eaters – Voldemort and followers – in Harry Potter are the villains and meant to mimic the Nazis and white supremacists), because he is a man actually knows how to write because he is a man.
Why are we kidding ourselves? You airheads simped over those children's books for 20 fucking years, and now you perform this act of it being oh so stupid. Quit licking Riordan's feet, because you know damn well that you'd turn on him and his works the same way if he was a "transphobe" – or, well, actually you wouldn't, because the problem is that JKR dared to be an outspoken woman, and a man would never face half the same consequences (as can be demonstrated with the FNAF fandom and its Trumpist, conservative, pro-life creator). Besides, are we truly blaming Rowling because some stupid fucking fans with no media literacy thought it'd be cool to get tattoos of the... villains?
It's useless. The accusing finger always points towards a woman.

it's so fucking wild to me how terfs just can't understand why we show so much distaste for them compared to say a some republican dude.
Like you should know better, that's what's so fucking bad. You claim to be feminists, you claim to care about racism and all that stuff.
Yet you do everything in your power to reduce women to their fucking reproductive organs. You shame women of colour for not adhering to white female beauty standards.
We know that republican scum will do all that. But you, misses terf. You are doing your fucking hardest to ruin everything feminism has ever stood for. You make it so we can't look to feminists as safe people.
And your attempt at making bigotry sound progressive and good fools so many people, it makes it easier for those in power to strip the rights from not just us trans people, but also every single other minority on the planet.
Like if you fuckers had not started being shitheads, if Rowling could just have shut her mouth, there wouldn't be talk of outlawing gay marriage in so many "developed" countries, we wouldn't have so much pushback against birth control.
All of this is very much also on you. And fucking shame on you for that

Mira Lazine at LGBTQ Nation:
Algerian boxer Imane Khelif opened up about the hate she’s received from the far-right during their “transvestigations” of her, focusing particularly on Elon Musk’s role in the hate mobs. [...] Khelif has been the victim of intense hate mobs directed at her solely on the basis of transphobia and racism. It started when she defeated her opponent, Italian boxer Angela Carini, in the first round of boxing at the Olympics. Carini dropped out after being punched in the face and anti-trans bigots began to accuse Khelif of being either a trans woman or a cis man, using an accusation made by an ally of Vladimir Putin on Telegram earlier this year. Algeria does not allow individuals to transition, and Khelif’s entire family has said that she was assigned female at birth. The International Olympics Committee has also confirmed her as cisgender.
Things only began to escalate when reference was made to when the Russia-based International Boxing Association disqualified Khelif after she defeated a Russian boxer, claiming she did not pass unspecified gender testing. However, the International Boxing Association has given no proof of the testing and has been banned from recognition by the International Olympic Committee due to instances of corruption and scandal.
Imane Khelif, the female Algerian boxer that was falsely accused of being a “male”, opens up about the experience of being a cyberbullying victim by anti-trans scum such as Elon Musk, JK Rowling, and Riley Gaines.

I've done some reading challenges before and I think they can be fun if they have a purpose: for instance, something like the Read Harder challenge, ones that encourage you to read from different genres or read more diverse books, etc. I have a sort of evergreen challenge where I encourage myself to read more books written by authors from different countries, and keep a spreadsheet of which countries I've "read." (I also do this with other kinds of entertainment like movies.) But it's definitely true that some of them just seem to be for the gimmick and aesthetic, and for people who prize quantity over quality of reading in a sort of commodity-fetishism (as they're prizing books as markers of intelligence over the actual experience of learning and expanding your world via reading). Like when the challenges start to be things like "read a book with an orange cover" that's where I start to roll my eyes a bit, haha.
I will say that while I try not to be a snob about reading, it does drive me nuts when I've had people lord over how many more books they've read or how many more pages when they're reading beach reads and YA and other easily digestible stuff whereas I'm reading stuff that is heavier. One time when I was working some crappy minimum-wage job in college, I was reading this big omnibus of all Jane Austen's works (because I was taking a class on her where I was required to read those, not that I wouldn't read Austen otherwise lol) on my break, and one of the other employees asked me how many pages it was and I answered and he was like "pfft, that's nothing, I read all the Harry Potter books in a week and they're more than that!" And I wanted to be like.... yeah, me too, dipshit. I mean, I didn't literally read them in one week, but when each one came out, I devoured it within a day or two like a lot of people did, despite it being 800 pages. Because Rowling's prose is really easy to gobble up like that. Not that Austen is impenetrable or anything (I don't think she is and I think that's precisely why she remains so evergreen popular), but she does require more effort than *that*, particularly when you're reading her work for a literature class where you're expected to write a paper analyzing it, so you want to linger to make sure you really deeply understand it.
I've read academic monographs that were 150 pages long that took me weeks to get through, and I've read 800-page bestsellers that I ripped through in a few days. Pure page length does not determine how long it takes to actually read something. I mean.... in fandom we should all be aware of this, how many of us have devoured some 100k fic in a night or two? As someone who has written some of those academic monographs myself and therefore is familiar with how word count tends to relate to book page length, I can verify for you that that is the equivalent of devouring a novel in the same time frame. But it's a lot easier to do that when you're reading relatively invisible prose and are invested in your OTP getting together (or whatever) vs. if you're trying to digest someone's very dry and convoluted argument about Foucault.
--
I just read all of Scum Villain in about five minutes, yeah. And it was great, but nothing to brag about as an achievement.
I've got this friend who goes on about reading sooooo fast but then admits to often rereading to catch things that she missed the first time. It came up when I was explaining how seldom I reread or rewatch anything. I tend to remember it far, far too keenly after one time through, and it just doesn't hit the same a second time. I still read pretty fast, but not that fast.
I don't think it's snobby to roll your eyes at people who clearly don't grasp the difference between different difficulties of reading and—this is key—who are trying to wave their dick at you about how great they are. They started it!
The time I do roll my eyes is when people think you should read mega hard prose in order to learn, especially in order to learn vocabulary or get faster at reading. That's not what the science says. (Apparently, the fastest way to improve on that kind of thing is to read mass quantities of faintly hard-for-you stuff, not stuff that's hard hard.) But to learn how to decode confusing arguments? Yes, absolutely.
I do wish people would put a little more effort into unwinding their own tortured syntax on Foucault though.

Listen, I don't like to involve myself with drama, nor do I like to defend people that donate money to horrible people. But seeing people compare Scott Cawthon to JK Rowling and saying they're the same kind of person is just INSANE???? Let me get this straight: Scott Cawthon is not a transphobe. He does not dislike transgender people. He does not dislike gay people. He himself has said that he loves all his fans no matter what identity and sexuality they may have. JK Rowling HATES trans people. She goes on social media to spread hate. She puts transphobic content in her books. She actively wants other people to BECOME transphobic people. Scott Cawthon? He's just a dumbass. I'm not going to sit here and tell you he's a saint, because he's not. He did something very harmful, but he didn't do it TO be harmful. He said it himself that he donated to the people he did for reasons totally unrelated to their views on queer people. He is a good person at heart, he just doesn't realize the things he does with his money have much greater consequences for those that aren't what he is - a white christian republican male living in Texas. Speaking of which - I know all of those things combined typically scream "THERE ARE ONLY TWO GENDERS NO CHILD OF MINE WOULD EVER BE ONE OF THEM QUEERS" but he is NOT one of those people!! Those types of people would never intentionally include non-binary people in their products, let alone SEVERAL of them, and completely intentionally. Mangle, Funtime Foxy (and therefore also Lolbit), and Spring Bonnie are all very intentionally and canonically non-binary characters in his games. Mangle and Funtime Foxy go by both She and He pronouns, and Spring Bonnie's loading screen caption in FNAF World says "Male? Female? It's a rabbit, who cares." A piece of scum "I have no pronouns" republican would never willingly include something like this. Not only that, there is a canon wlw relationship in one of the Fazbear's Frights books. It's very minor and unimportant, but if he actively hated gay people, he would not include a gay relationship in something he is directly writing. At the end of the day, you have every right to dislike Scott Cawthon for the things he has done. You don't have to give him a cent of your money if you don't want to, and you're free to enjoy the things he creates without supporting his views. You are not a bad person for liking FNAF. But comparing Scott Cawthon to JK Rowling is absolutely absurd. They are NOWHERE near the same level of evil. He's just dumb and rich.

It’s so hard to take these people moaning about JK Rowling seriously because it’s clear they like having a woman to be allowed to be disgustingly misogynistic to and treat like some boogeyman. Everyone hates her so no one will call them out on their misogyny. Also it’s incredible that I’ve seen the same block and protect people call JK the scum of the earth yet say they want to wait and see about Gaiman’s deplorable behaviour. JK is a bigot but this man has caused real life real time harm to women and they don’t care. Women are always worse no matter what. The ways in which people hate and disregard women never fails to amaze.
yeah Rowling is a horrible woman but she's never done anything as terrible as a rapist. Serial rape is the thing they SHOULD be acting performatively outraged about and explosively hating on and making callouts about but it's just "ooooh look at her problematic tweet I'm so mad!! 😡" over and over again for like 10 years and ignoring every horrible man..... Lame.
