It’s the same people, Acadians, descendants of French settlers that settled the Maritimes, northern New England, and southern Louisiana that live in each of these areas now. . The word Cajun, even, is a contraction of Acadian. Many of the social habits, food, and speech is similar, and in each area these facets further evolved to create distinct regional personalities. . I love hearing phrases like: - Why he did that? - I tuhned aroun and dey he was, gone! and - You take this back up the downstahs . One of the places I used to hitchhike to as a kid was Acadia National Park, halfway up the coast of Maine. It was there I first started learning about, and exploring, the connection between the Acadians of northeast US and Canada and the Acadians (Cajuns) of southern Louisiana. . I’m tickled to death to be rambling and roaming south of I-10 in Cajun Bayou country. . Do you explore local culture and history when you ramble? I can’t help but stop and ponder the past of each place I visit and wonder how much of it will remain as this continent becomes more and more homogenized. .
