I have worked 50 hours in 4 days this week and I am TIRED
#that's after 7 hours on sunday too#we've been told we can have tomorrow off without using up any leave tho which is nice#spent the last 2 days being sandblasted by grit and coal granules#don't recommend#it was being kicked up by helicopters taking off and landing close to us#rotor wash is intense#and we were in an old coal mine site#so lots and lots and lots of fine gravel to fly around#the sites for the first half of the week were nowhere near as bad

FLIGHTLINE: 193 - LOCKHEED XFC-130H CREDIBLE SPORT

FLIGHTLINE: 193 - LOCKHEED XFC-130H CREDIBLE SPORT
Completed in just three weeks, the XFC-130H were a pair of transports modified for ultra-STOL performance for an ultimately aborted rescue mission.
PRELUDE
During the 1979 Iranian Revolution, fifty-two American diplomats and citizens were captured and held hostage by a group of Iranian students, who demanded the former Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. US President Jimmy Carter refused to extradite Pahlavi, who had fled to the US for cancer treatment after the revolution, and instead ordered the US military to free the hostages in an operation codenamed EAGLE CLAW. The plan called for eight USN RH-53D Sea Stallion helicopters to join three USAF EC-130E and three more MC-130E transports at a salt flat, designated DESERT ONE, southeast of Tehran. There members of Delta Force, the US Army Rangers and Detachment "A", Berlin Brigade would transfer to the helicopters for the flight to DESERT TWO, a location in the mountains closer to Tehran, where the groups would remain during the next day. The following evening, the Delta Force and Detachment A troops would board trucks driven by CIA agents to assault the US Embassy and Iranian Foreign Affairs buildings, where the hostages were being kept, while the Army Rangers would capture the abandoned Manzariyeh Air Base to allow two C-141 Starlifters to land and retrieve the hostages and US forces. Support for the operation would be provided by two USAF AC-130 Spectre gunships as well as aircraft from the carriers Coral Sea and Nimitz.
Operation Eagle Claw was launched on 24 April 1980, and almost immediately problems with the weather and with coordination between the various disparate groups surfaced. Only the two MC-130s successfully landed at Desert One, delivering teams of soldiers to monitor the nearby road and supplies to mark a landing strip for the helicopters and EC-130s. Almost immediately after the second group of transports, callsign Republic, arrived, the watch team was forced to detain an Iranian tour bus with 43 passengers and one driver. Shortly thereafter, a tanker truck and pickup later determined to be smuggling fuel attempted to bypass the roadblock and the tanker was subsequently destroyed with an RPG, killing the passenger while the driver escaped in the pickup. The Navy helicopters, callsign Bluebeard, meanwhile, were having equipment and weather issues, with one being forced to land due to a cracked rotor blade. The crew were picked up by another helo while the damaged RH-53 was left behind, but then the flight encountered a haboob, an intense dust storm being driven by winds from a collapsing thunderstorm or weather front. Electrical problems forced Bluebeard 5 to return to the Nimitz, while the remaining 6 helicopters finally arrived at Desert One 90 minutes behind schedule. The last chopper to arrive, Bluebeard 2, arrived with a broken hydraulic system, meaning it was unavailable to continue the mission. Eagle Claw called for a minimum of 6 RH-53s, and the mission commander was unwilling to proceed by reducing the size of the teams. Arguments between the various commands involved further delayed the mission, and finally after two hours and thirty minutes on the ground President Carter aborted the mission. While repositioning the RH-53s to allow them to refuel for the return trip to the carrier, Bluebeard 3 became engulfed in the dust cloud kicked up by its own rotors and drifted into the EC-130, callsign Republic 4, striking the EC-130s vertical tail with its main rotor. Eight servicemen died in the explosion and fire that followed, 5 from the EC-130 and 3 from the helicopter. It was decided at this point to abandon the remaining helos and fly out their crews on the EC-130s, with unsuccessful attempts being made to retrieve or destroy any classified documents, while fears of damage by explosions or shrapnel damaging the transports meant no attempt was made to destroy the RH-53s.

The stinging failure of Eagle Claw resulted in a shake-up of the US DOD, with the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) becoming operational on 16 April 1987, charged with overseeing coordination of the various special operations groups of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. Additionally, the Army created the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) (Night Stalkers). with the goal of training Army pilots for low-level night time flying. Another outcome was the creation of the the Joint-service Vertical take-off/landing Experimental (JVX) program in 1981, which (eventually) culminated in the development of the Bell/Boeing V-22 Osprey.
SUPER STOL
Under the code name HONEY BADGER, the newly created Joint Test Directorate within the Office of Secretary of Defense's joint planning staff had been conducting a series of programs and exercises to develop and validate new capabilities for the DOD. A joint USAF-USN-Lockheed program, code named CREDIBLE SPORT, was established less than two weeks after Eagle Claw with the goal of modifying an existing C-130 to land within the Amjadien Stadium across the street from the US Embassy, from which the plane would extract the hostages and Delta Force members inserted to rescue them. The modified Hercules would then take off and head for a USN carrier, where it would land and off load its passengers. The C-130 was chosen as it was the fastest transport capable of landing on an unimproved surface, but the pitch inside Amjadien was only 500 feet long, too short for even the C-130. A contract was signed on 27 June 1980 with Lockheed-Georgia to produce an engineering study on the modifications needed, then to convert three C-130s, one to act as a test-bed and two XFC-130H aircraft to act as primary and secondary on the mission, all within 90 days. A fourth aircraft, an EC-130E Airborne Battlefield Command and Control Center (ABCCC), was used as a mockup of the interior spaces for training. Lockheed's report, delivered on 16 July, indicated that no fewer than fifty-eight standard JATO bottles would be needed to accomplish the mission, far more than was practical, and that an arresting system would not be able to stop the aircraft in the space available. The expertise of the US Navy's China Lake Weapons Station was then tapped for alternative rocket motors. Personnel from all three organizations then worked to modify the C-130's frame to mount the rockets, as well as to reinforce the structure to withstand the stresses produced. Along with the rocket mounts, extensions to the ventral fin filet and horizontal stabilizers were added, along with double-slotted flaps and extended ailerons, a tailhook for landing on the carrier, a bolt-on aerial refueling receptacle, and a new radome containing avionics taken from an MC-130E Combat Talon, including including a Terrain Following/Terrain Avoidance radar, defensive countermeasures, and a Doppler radar/GPS tie-in to the aircraft's inertial navigation system. The most obvious addition to the XFC-130H were the installation of 30 rockets in multiple sets: eight forward-pointed ASROC rocket motors mounted around the forward fuselage to stop the aircraft, eight downward-pointed Shrike rockets fuselage-mounted above the wheel wells to brake its descent, eight rearward-pointed MK-56 rockets (from the RIM-66 Standard missile) mounted on the lower rear fuselage for takeoff assist, two Shrikes mounted in pairs on wing pylons to correct yaw during takeoff transition, and two ASROCs mounted at the rear of the tail to prevent it from striking the ground from over-rotation.

Three C-130s, s/n 74-2065, 74-1683 and 74-1686 were modified by Lockheed and delivered to TAB 1, a disused auxiliary field at Eglin AFB in Florida, with -2065, the test-bed, flying first on 18 September. The first XFC-130, s/n -1683, arrived on 17 October, and between 19 October and 28 October a number of flight tests validated the configuration and abilities of the Credible Sport modifications.

A full system test with 1683 was then scheduled for the 29th. The takeoff proceeded flawlessly, setting a number of STO records. The Lockheed test crew aboard the aircraft judged that the computer coordinating the firing of the landing rockets was not calibrated properly, and decided to perform the landing under manual control. The upper pair of braking ASROC motors, mounted above the cockpit, could be ignited while the XFC was still airborne (specifically, at 20'), but that the lower pairs would only be fired after the aircraft was on the ground, with the descent-braking rockets being fired after the first pair. During the landing attempt the upper rockets fired successfully, but the flight engineer, blinded by the firings, thought the aircraft was on the runway and fired the lower set early. The descent-braking rockets did not fire at all. Some members of Lockheed test crew's members dispute this, asserting that the lower rockets fired themselves through an undetermined computer or electrical malfunction, which at the same time failed to fire the descent-braking rockets. In either case, the Herc's airspeed was immediately reduced to nearly zero, dropping it hard to the runway. The starboard wing broke between the third and fourth engines, spilling fuel which was then ignited, but a medical evacuation helicopter used its rotor wash to beat back the flames, and crash response teams extinguished the fire within eight seconds. The USAF and Lockheed crews escaped the wreckage with only minor injuries, but 1683 was a total loss. Crews salvaged what had escaped the fire, while the aircraft's fuselage was dismantled and buried on the air base to ensure security.

The second XFC, s/n 74-1686, was nearly ready for flight, but the accident, as well as Carter's loss to Ronald Reagan in November, saw the cancellation of Credible Sport. The Algiers Accords of January 19th 1981 resulted in the American hostages being released on 20 January. 74-2065, the test bed aircraft, was returned to its original configuration and resumed regular airlift duties, while 74-1686 was stripped of its rockets, but not the other STOL modifications, and was sent to Robins AFB to act as the YMC-130 prototype under CREDIBLE SPORT II. Phase I testing ran from 24 August to 11 November 1981, and involved certifying minor aerodynamics changes, validating STOL performance and handling characteristics, as well as establishing safety margins. Phase II, which began on 15 June 1982 and ended in October, confirmed that the Combat Talon II design met all program goals and that the aircraft was ready for production. The USAF judged that the cost of returning the YMC-130 to standard configuration was more than it was worth, and 1686 was therefore placed on display at the Museum of Aviation at Robins AFB in Georgia from 1988 to 2018, after which it was transported to the Empire State Aerosciences Museum in NY. 74-2065, meanwhile, remains in service with the Air National Guard.

Order from Chaos (Part One): The Gathering

Apparently Tommy has been acting pretty weird lately. Sonic walks into Rotor's lab looking for him after he borrowed his guitar and didn't return it, only to find Tails irritated that Tommy messed up one of his projects and Rotor upset that Tommy washed some "dirty" petri dishes. They all realize that he's been acting strange ever since he was infected with the nanites, and despite their annoyance with his actions Sonic insists that he's not bad and is mostly worried about him.
Meanwhile, something even more interesting is going on in Eggman's base. He's finally figured out who Anonymous is! A.D.A.M. congratulates him on his success, until Eggman begins the process of deleting him. At first A.D.A.M. feigns confusion, but Eggman snaps at him to stop pretending and explains how he figured everything out. He realized that the videos A.D.A.M. "extracted" from the Metal Destructix replicas were faked to throw him off the scent, found out that it was A.D.A.M. who released his nanites to create the nanite city, and released Naugus and the Metal Sonic army into his base. Furthermore, A.D.A.M. completely faked the video depicting M betraying Eggman, meaning he forced his "daughter" to self-destruct for no reason. How did he find this out? Because just a moment ago, Eggman watched through a secret camera as A.D.A.M released Mammoth Mogul from his Egg Grape prison, stealing his Chaos Emerald as payment. A.D.A.M. seems mostly offended at Eggman's angry and accusing demeanor, but Eggman pays him no mind, completing the deletion of all his files.
Well, that's… bad.
At the same moment, chaos erupts in Knothole. Nicole suddenly begins glitching out and struggling against a nanite infection. Bunnie wanders into the room involuntarily while her arm flails out of control, striking Tails and knocking him outside. She's panicking and near-hysterical, screaming for someone to stop her since she can't control her own mechanical limbs, and Knuckles and Vector hold her down while Rotor hurries to disconnect her cybernetic parts until they've fixed the issue. Sonic heads outside to check on Tails, only to find him being carried away by Jules, who's also being controlled by the nanites.
Well things just go from bad to worse, don't they? Their destination is, in fact, in the center of the nanite city, where a strange metallic spire has formed out of the nanites still present there, surrounded by a ring of Chaos Emeralds that A.D.A.M. has presumably been gathering in secret. He obviously has some grand plan in mind that's finally coming to fruition, as Shadow then arrives…
Shadow is able to dodge A.D.A.M.'s first few attacks, but ultimately A.D.A.M. is too powerful when combined with the power of the nanites, and Shadow is knocked out. He places the unconscious Shadow into one sealed pod at the base of the spire, and Jules arrives and dutifully places Tails into the other one next to it. A.D.A.M. then decides to explain his plan to a terrified Eggman, which is great, since it means we finally get to hear what the hell this is all about! See, apparently, A.D.A.M. has done what no other sentient being in this universe has managed to do thus far, and found out the location of every single Chaos Emerald not only on this planet, but in the entire universe. There are seven different varieties of emerald in the universe, each a different color - you see where this is going? A.D.A.M. is preparing to gather them all into one place, using Shadow's extra-strong Chaos Control as a power source and using Turbo Tails as the conduit for the gathering. Remember how I pointed out that he didn't really seem to have fulfilled the whole "Great Harmony" prophecy when he turned into *shudder* Titan Tails? Yeah, turns out this is it - bringing all the Chaos Emeralds in the universe to this one location!
The emeralds power up, and instantly Shadow and Tails awaken screaming as their power begins to pulse through them, drawing the Chaos Emeralds to the nanite city…
Courage and Honor

I know that the whole story above is pretty intense, but it's time to shift gears to something a little more personal and emotional. Antoine has been doing his best to settle back into his life in Knothole since they got rid of his evil double, but everything in his house was wrecked pretty badly in the wake of that whole disaster. Bunnie arrives to reassure him, and despite his sadness at how many things in his life have been ruined thanks to Evil Antoine, she reminds him that she's still here for him.
Wh- whoa whoa whoa, 'Twan! Slow down now! You two barely got back together, and you're only what, nineteen? You can't just rush into things like that! Sonic bursts in to interrupt their moment, urgently informing Antoine that Dr. Quack wants to see him about his father's condition. Antoine asks Bunnie to come with him, and Sonic becomes uncharacteristically downcast once they leave, hating the idea of being in Antoine's shoes as it was already painful enough to lose his own father once before. At the hospital, Dr. Quack tells Antoine that unfortunately the poison his evil double used on his father was too strong, and that there's no way to cure him, leaving him with very little time left.
Antoine and Bunnie enter the room to find General D'Coolette on his deathbed. Antoine becomes very upset and begins apologizing for all his failings - being cowardly, being jealous and dividing the team in the past, feeling like he's sullied the family name. However, the general seems almost offended at this, sternly informing Antoine that he could not be prouder of him for facing his fears and overcoming his more negative personality traits over the years, not to mention fighting Robotnik ever since he was a child. He then turns his attention on Bunnie, who at first is similarly guilty, though in her case it's over "cheating" on Antoine with Sonic (again with this! It wasn't her fault, dammit!). The general makes them outright admit how much they care for each other, and gives them his blessing to continue their relationship.
Aww, this is really sad but touching. Locke's death in M25YL is probably the only thing that really comes close to this level of emotional, actually. Most other deaths in this series have ben some kind of heroic sacrifice or something, and for the most part, everyone who still had parents after the Robians were freed got them back without too much trouble (Tails is a notable exception, but his parents are still alive, just not nearby). But in the main timeline, this is the first actual permanent death of a parent that any of the main cast has faced, and though we didn't really get to see much of General D'Coolette he did seem like a very noble and good man who passed on his best traits to Antoine. It is also interesting to note that both of these "saying goodbye to a parent on their deathbed" scenes are dedicated to someone - in Penders' case it was his own father, and in this case it's Ian's grandmother. I think it's important to respect these kinds of scenes, as they're obviously very significant to the ones who wrote them, and in both cases I do think that the respective writers did a very good job honoring the memory of their lost loved ones. Looking a bit dazed, Nicole reveals that Adam attacked her – a full-scale, no-holds-barred attack on her system. She had only just barely been able to construct firewalls fast enough to keep him out, she explains, and likely only succeeded because she has more experience than he does. Ultimately, she did manage to fix his projection program, but was only able to do so because she pulled far enough ahead of him to shut him down for a few minutes.
For a moment, Fini is unable to respond. This just seemed so out-of-character for Adam – but was it really? Had he simply been playing Fini this whole time? Finitevus awkwardly apologizes for putting Nicole in danger the way he did, but she quickly shrugs the issue off; there’s something else far more unsettling about Adam, which she discovered once he’d gone offline. It turns out, Hamlin isn’t the only admin listed in his system; Nicole had found a second account.

Rescue was coming soon enough, and he just needed to hold out. His vision was blurring, but he still recognized Smoke coming through the open doorway, accompanied by the two CBRN experts, Finka and Lion. He could hear their chatter, helped up to a sitting position and firmly asked if he was alright. He was fine enough; the injury wouldn’t kill him.
He hated now having to wait for the extraction helicopter to come in, forced to sit like a child in timeout as the other operators fortified the building. They were working to give him the much needed protection until help arrived, he knew, but that didn’t change how much he hated it. The roaches swarmed, eager to tear him to shreds or blow him up, and the only prevention was covering fire from the others. His own guns were out of ammo; the supplies strewn when he went down.
He felt a sense of sympathy for the crashed machine, it had done nothing but serve him well and there was no saving it. It almost felt wrong, to have to leave it torn and burning in the roof of the roadside store, yet there was nothing he could do. He almost swore that it’s blades whirred to life, having to look up to confirm that the machine was still wrecked and the noise he heard was instead coming from outside. There was never a moment where the sound made a wave of relief wash over him, but he felt it nonetheless.
Lion got him to his feet and helped him to the cabin of the helicopter, and the thought that this would be far more embarrassing if I wasn’t bleeding out crossed his mind. There was a firm pressure at his side, stemming the blood flow that had trailed after him. The ground got further and further away as they took off, and Jäger was able to fully appreciate just how lucky he really was. The crash would have killed any passengers, and should have killed him, and somehow it didn’t. He sat silently, waving off questions of concern. He was fine, and would be fine, they didn’t need to worry.
Doc was firm in seeing him, confirming that he would recover just fine and ensure that he wasn’t at all infected. To his disappointment, he was being sent home, no longer fit to perform on mission. Jäger knew better than to argue with Doc when the altruist’s mind was made up for the sake of someone else. The worst part was waiting, where the pain was the only clear feeling and everything else was fuzzy. He would at least have time to sleep on the ride home, and he wasn’t about to forsake that opportunity and avoid more concerned looks and questions. He rested in the back of the helicopter to take him home, staying near the back to hear and feel the vibrations of the tail’s rotors as he fell asleep.
The banging on the door of the cabin startled him awake, already not a great start to a sour mood. He used the seats and the walls to support himself as he stood, surprised when the door was thrown open.
“Jesus. You really look like scheiße this time.”
Dominic’s statement shouldn’t have surprised him.
“Don’t worry, I feel just as bad as I look.”
Behind Dominic were Monika and Elias, clearly expecting him. He realized too late that he hadn’t said anything to them, having completely forgotten in favor of ignoring all interactions with other people.
“If we’d known you were coming back so soon,” Elias’ voice started, “I would have asked Frost for help with a proper welcome mat.”
“Very funny, Elias.”
Dominic snickered, moving now to help him down from the helicopter.
“What even happened?”
Monika was clearly concerned, and there was no denying it to anyone. He knew he should have at least told her, the woman was dedicated to her very best and deserved at least that much. Even if she sometimes puts those expectations on other people.
“Something hit me while flying and took me out of the air. Rescue team came before things got too bad, don’t worry that much.”
“Clearly still bad enough if Doc is so eager in sending you home as soon as possible.”
“It’s nothing lethal, Monika. It will heal just fine.”
Monika shrugged, and he was grateful that she decided to let the topic go.
“Fine. No pranks or rough housing until you’ve healed.”
The collective groan of disappointment from Elias and Dominic made him grin. She and Elias turned to head inside, leaving Dominic to help him walk. He was still sure he would be more embarrassed and annoyed if there wasn’t the unspoken agreement that he did sincerely need the help, and as much as the other operator moaned about him being a “heavy sack of shit”, there was no refusing to help. The walk to his bed felt like an eternity, with the slow pace and endless stream of sarcastic retorts, making it incredibly hard to not simply collapse on the soft cushions and relax.
The pain by now had dulled, now allowed to take the painkillers that Doc had recommended. They will make you drowsy, Doc warned, do not take them until you’re back at your own quarters. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Looking out the window, it was a perfect day -sun is brightly shining, birds are chirping, flowers are in full bloom and so are the people hustling to make the day perfect for the celebrant, for me. I was so excited and emotions unlocking. It's every girl's dream to live a fairy tale life even for one day. I felt so cosy in my satin pyjamas on my bed with the softest duvet wrapped around me like a burrito, creating a wonderful sense of comfort and contentedness on these wintery days but I chose to get up and went out of my room, strode past the rooms and as I walk to the hallway of our house that leads towards the kitchen, there and then I see fair ladies in white apron walking back and forth with spatula, spoon, and plates in their hands. I was mesmerized. I continued walking and when I reached my destination- the seaside- the inner mermaid in me cried of what my eyes perceive The sea itself was like a rippling blanket of brochure-turquoise. Squabbling birds flew overhead. The horizon was edged with a silver tint and small fishes swam into that place where sun and water meet. The opera of the sea washed over me and the wave-music was welcome.It was soothing and I was glad to get away from the hurly-burly and stresses of life- it was a perfect place for a reception. I know that by that time, it will be a perfect day for I am in the place where it gives me peace and serenity and for I have with me my loved ones. Unfortunately, the turn of events happened by the last minute, when the celebration was about to start. Clouds began to gather in the sky. The sky had been postcard-perfect, but it was changing. The beautiful cocktail-blue shade was beginning to darken into gravel-grey. Large pillows of clouds were forming, blotting out the old-gold colour of the sun. I got the first splatter of rain when I was halfway walking to the reception wearing my splendiferous stunning baby pink pleated ball gown. As I was standing in the middle of the crowd, droplets of moisture began to drip from the leaves. They were sprinkling onto the sand like a gardener’s hose. Then the rainfall became more intense that everyone needed to go back inside the house. I was looking by the window, a wall of rain moved over the oak and the drops were drumming against the canopy. So much rain was falling that the sound blurred into one long, whirring noise. It reminded me of the rotor blades on a helicopter.
The call of nature gave us no choice but to continue the celebration inside. I was about to burst in tears but realizing that it was only the reception that the rain took away and may have tested me and let me thought that it was the end of it yet looking at the people that surrounded me and the effort and affection they showered upon me to make the day perfect was immaculate. I was beyond grateful.
