you don’t feel it as it happens, not until after the small group of walkers has been taken out, laying on the ground before you in a bloody, gory mess.

rosita stands on the other side of the pharmacy, blowing the hair from her face and wiping the sweat from her hands as her eyes lower to your arm and then widen with realisation.

“oh, god. your arm,” she points to the gash across your limb, a small trickle of blood running down your skin.

“wha-shit,” you grimace, inspecting the new injury and then to the broken glass that was beside you, “i must’ve cut it when the walkers attacked.”

rosita is by your side within moments, stepping over the now permanently dead walkers to study your wound. she takes your arm in her hands, turning it gently to assess the damage. her touch is soft, careful, almost like she’s afraid she’ll hurt you even more. “it looks deep. not deep enough to need stitches though,” she remarks, a slight frown on her face. “does it hurt at all?”

“no, not really. at least not right now,” you shake your head. you both knew that it was only a matter of time before the adrenaline that was coursing through your body from fighting off the walkers would wear off and the pain would start to kick in, but for now, rosita was just grateful that you weren’t in too much pain.

she gives you a small nod, still clearly concerned. “let’s get you cleaned up before it gets infected. there’s who knows what on this broken glass.”

you watch as she glances around the pharmacy with a thoughtful look on her face before turning towards the shelves and beginning to rummage through anything and everything to find some antiseptic and something to clean it with. she eventually finds a clean rag, a couple band-aids and a small unopened bottle of rubbing alcohol tucked away in an old storage cupboard in the corner and returns to your side.

“sit,” she instructs, gesturing for you to take a seat beside her as she sits down on the ground. the tone of her voice is authoritative but soft, and you can’t help but do as she says.

“yes, ma’am,” you respond jokingly, your lips curling into a slight smirk as you sink down beside her.

rosita rolls her eyes, fighting the urge to smile as she begins to unstopper the bottle and tips a little bit of the liquid onto the cloth. “i’m trying to save you from an infection, smartass. this is a very serious matter, now shut up and let me look at it.” her tone is teasing, her words light, and there’s a sparkle in her eyes that she only ever seemed to have for you.

“i’m sorry, you’re right. this is a very serious matter,” you match her teasing tone, nodding your head while fighting the urge to smile.

the corner of her mouth twitches, a smile fighting to take over her face and she lets out a sigh of mock annoyance, “can’t have you dying from infection, can we?”

you hum, “mmm, don’t know how you’d ever go on without me.”

she grins, gently taking your injured arm in her hands and gingerly lifting it up to examine the wound more closely. it’s a good thing that she was so focused on cleaning and patching you up now, or she might have noticed the way your eyes followed her fingers as they gently caressed your skin.

“hold still. this might sting a little.” she meets your eyes for confirmation and you nod, bracing yourself.

the alcohol wipes over the cut, and just as rosita had warned, the sensation was painful and stung like hell, but she moved gently and efficiently to ensure that every part of it was free from dirt. you grimace slightly, letting out a small hiss which makes her eyebrows knit together with concern and she gives your arm a firm squeeze as a silent apology.

“almost done,” she continues to clean the wound, her touch is delicate and precise, but also careful not to cause you any more pain. her face remains expressionless, though you can see the clear look of concentration in her now narrowed eyes.

you can’t help but watch her as she meticulously tends to your wound, as if caring for you came so naturally to her.

eventually, she sets aside the cloth with a small huff of satisfaction, studying the wound and letting out a sound of contentment that it was now free from dirt and filth. it was still raw, and it would probably sting for a while longer, but at least it was clean.

her eyes flicker up to meet yours and she smiles, placing the band-aids over the wound, “just one last finishing touch,” she says and presses a gentle kiss to it, giving your arm another small squeeze before letting it fall back into your lap. “there, all better.”

your heart flutters at the gesture, your eyes not leaving her for a moment, “my hero.”

“shut up,” she rolls her eyes, leaning back against the wall as she glances down at your arm, just to make sure your blood wasn’t seeping through the bandages, and to hide the light crimson on her cheeks.

there’s a small comfortable silence between the two of you, and for a moment you both just sit there, breathing the same air, relishing in the other’s presence for a few more minutes before you finally speak, a hint of amusement in your voice.

“it’s good and all, but you did miss one thing,” you raise your brows as you slowly shake your head.

rosita tilts her head to the side, a flicker of confusion in her eyes, “and what is it exactly that i missed?”

you lean a little closer, your eyes wandering her features. taking in the deep brown of her eyes and the way her lips curl into a small smile. “you missed something… right here,” you point to your lips.

she lets out a scoff, her eyes darting from your lips to your eyes then back again, “guess i’ll have to fix that then, won’t i?”

you nod, your smile widening, "definitely."

“you’re insufferable, you know that.” she shakes her head, but doesn’t ask it, she states it, leaving you no room to argue. though despite her words she can’t keep the smile off of her face as she brings a hand up to cup your cheek. her touch is soft, just as it had been while she was tending to your wound, and her thumb gently brushes across your skin, her eyes never leaving yours.

“yeah, but you love me,” your voice is low, managing to get the last word out just before she closes the space between you both.

“unfortunately, you’re right.” she murmurs against your mouth, a soft huff of laughter escaping through her nose as her lips continue to move against yours.

her free hand comes up to grasp your chin, angling your head to deepen the kiss and a small hum of contentment escapes her. when she pulls away, she lets her forehead rest against yours for a moment, before taking in a deep breath. “satisfied now?”

you nod, and hum with approval, “very.”

“good.” she sighs, pulling away and standing to her feet before offering you a hand to do the same, “now c’mon you, we should get moving before it gets dark.”

no matter what you did, you couldn’t get to sleep. you turned on your left, right, on your back, on your stomach, and nothing was working.

you were growing frustrated, as you felt tired, but your body didn’t want to agree. tomorrow, you had too much to do around Hilltop and wanted to try and rest as much as possible, but you just couldn’t.

as you were about to get up to try and go down into the kitchen for some food in hopes that it would make you tired, you started to hear footsteps walk across the hall outside your door. at first, your hand reached for your gun instinctively. sometimes, you were just stuck in your old ways before you had a somewhat permanent home.

the doorknob on your door started to jiggle slightly and you took a step back and furrowed your eyebrows. finally, the door creaked open, and then Rosita peaked her head in. your shoulders fell as you let out a sigh of relief, “what are you doing, Ro? you should be sleeping.”

Rosita closed the door behind her and walked over to you, sliding her arms around your waist. “i couldn’t sleep.” she told you, lifting her head up to place a gentle kiss on your lips. you chuckled, “that makes two of us, then.”

“can’t sleep either?” she asked you, and you shook your head. “no. i’ve tried everything.” you told her. Rosita took your hand and started to crawl into your bed, taking you with her.

when you laid down, Rosita pulled you into her chest, wrapping her arms tightly around you. your body instantly relaxed in her touch. Rosita pressed a kiss to your head and laid her head on top of yours.

you felt your body start to slowly shut down. a chuckle left your lips, “i think all i needed was you.” you whispered. “i feel like i can sleep here forever.” Rosita laughed along, “yeah? good thing i came in here, then.”

“get some rest, love. we got a lot to do tomorrow.” Rosita leaned down and connected your lips softly. you kissed back, and neither of you pulled away for almost a minute. when you did, you dropped your head back on her chest, and it only took a few minutes for you to fall into a deep sleep.

it took Rosita a few more minutes, but to pass the time she watched you with nothing but love in her eyes. your chest rose and fell slowly, and your hand had gripped her shirt so she couldn’t go anywhere - not that she wanted to. she kissed your head one final time before her eyes closed and she eventually fell asleep with you.

"I can see you struggling to keep your eyes open, baby," Rosita teased. She always did this when you were tired because it amused her. "I don't mind if you go to sleep, you know."

"I'm awake," you reply, your voice giving you away for your tiredness. "I'm awake."

"Yeah, yeah," Rosita continued to run her fingers through your hair as your head lay on her lap. "I believe you."

You laughed at her sarcasm, too tired to reply back, so you kissed her thigh. "Good."

She continued to relax you, looping your hair with her fingers and eventually letting it fall back in place. Rosita was the reason why you were tired right now. You were just so relaxed.

You felt your eyes close a few times but always caught yourself right before you drifted off to sleep. "What are we doing tomorrow?"

"I have to teach some of the people how to use some weapons. Other than that, I'll be free to do whatever." Rosita replied.

"Aren't they lucky to have you as a teacher?" You smiled as you turned over to look up at your girlfriend. Her smile remained on her lips until she brought a kiss to your lips.

"Your lessons are free," she spoke. "Any lessons you want."

"I love anything from you," you said, turning back on your side. Rosita's hand now rested on your waist - the motion of her slightly massaging it made you relaxed again.

There was silence for a few minutes. You wondered if your girlfriend was tired as well, but you didn't want to admit your tiredness. Every moment with her was like a treasure for you.

Your eyes were closed as you thought about Rosita, almost drifting to sleep a few times.

"Go to sleep, baby," Rosita whispered. "It's okay."

"But I want to spend time with you." You replied, your eyes still closed, almost as if they were glued shut.

"We have tomorrow," she pointed out. "Please sleep. I'm tired too. We can sleep together- not in that way, but you know what I mean."

"I want that too." You joked.

"That can happen tomorrow," Rosita laughed, "Goodnight."

"Goodnight."

Some may find it hard to believe, but in a past life, Rosita was the one that would wrap the gifts, and honestly, she enjoyed doing so.

She must admit that she was a bit rusty when it came to the craft, but it wasn't that hard to get back in her groove. She had never seen the point of Christmas until her family had moved to Alexandria, after losing Abraham and Glenn, but when she met you, her sweet girlfriend, it was like the holiday spirit had been instilled in her once more. Rosita had also wanted to give the kids especially Coco, a chance to see what it was like to receive gifts, to wake up to something under the tree, an even to look forward to, something to distract them from the dangers beyond the walls.

"Rosie?" You called out to her as you came through the front door. Little Coco cooed in your arms. It had been your turn to take care of the baby after Eugene had finally let up on his anal schedule he had in place for the little girl. It was strange, being around a man that you knew wanted your girlfriend, but yet, it wasn't all at the same time.

"In here!" You followed the sound of her voice, a love-struck smile on your face as you spotted the array of wrapping paper and items on your dining table. "What're you up to?" You asked. She stopped her taping to give you a peck on your lips, taking her daughter out of your arms so she could sit on your lap. "Just making sure that the kids experience their first Christmas. Who do you think I could sell Santa to?" Your insides had practically melted at her admission. You walked behind her, massaging her shoulders. "I think you have a good chance with RJ. I'm not sure about the others." She huffed, but smiled, nonetheless.

"It's okay, everyone's getting a gift anyways." She said, before turning her attention back to wrapping.

Rosita heard soft sniffling, and her eyes fluttered open. her eyes landed on her alarm clock first, it was almost three in the morning. when she finally turned around, she saw you at the edge of your bed with your head in your hands.

she removed herself from the blankets immediately and crawled on the bed over to you. “hey, sweetheart? what’s going on?” you jumped at her voice and her touch, you hadn’t realized you woke her up. you quickly wiped your eyes and tried to sit up straight.

“nothing, Rosi. go back to bed, i didn’t mean to wake you. i promise i’m okay.” you said, but your voice was still shaky as more tears fell from your eyes. of course, Rosita didn’t believe you.

“no, honey. tell me what’s wrong. don’t try to push me away, please.” she whispered and slipped one of her hands into yours. you took a deep breath and finally looked her in the eyes. “i don’t think i’m made for this.” you whispered. Rosita furrowed her eyebrows.

“what do you mean, baby? made for what?” she asked. “this!” you exclaimed, waving your hands towards everything. “this life. i’m not made to fight forever. i’m not like you guys. i’m tired, i want my life to go back to normal. i just want my life back.” you couldn’t stop crying and you buried your face into her neck, hoping to muffle your sobs.

Rosita held onto you tightly, she had no idea where any of this came from. you never complained about anything, you just did what you had to do. Rosita never knew how you truly felt. why would you keep it from her?

“i love you too,” you whispered, and Rosita leaned forward to softly press her lips to yours. you kissed back and tangled your fingers through her thick, black hair. “come on,” she whispered. “let’s get back to bed. we can stay here all day, how does that sound?”

you and Rosita got back into bed and she took you into her arms. you laid your head on her chest and buried your face in her neck, and Rosita pressed one final, long kiss to your head. “that sounds amazing.” you said in her neck, making Rosita giggle at the slight tickle.
