I have a friend who likes to receive my home-made illustrations for his birthday, which is really nice. He collects artwork from actual artists (you know, like, professional ones), so I always do my best to make him something really nice (within my, er, skillset of course). The trouble is that consequently I want something Good and then he has to wait aaaaaaages for it, poor soul. His birthday is in April and I delivered this illustration to him yesterday - in early November.

Should you not recognise this sword-wielding princess: she’s Rose Harvestar, later known as Gran’ma Ben, and she fights the dragon Balsaad in Rose, the prequel to Jeff Smith’s epic comic Bone. I adore the character of Rose and I adore Bone, and if I’ve never drawn Rose before it’s probably because I am very much in awe of Charles Vess, who is one of my favourite artists and who drew the Rose comic.
