Rewatching jatp for the [redacted] time and thinking about how Rose was the last person to talk to the boys before they died which led me to think about the fact that she must have bedazzled the Sunset Curve shirt afterwards.
She would’ve been there when the show got canceled since they didn’t come back and then found out what happened. But she bedazzled in anyways. Not only did she keep that shirt for 25 years but she personalized it, poured love into it. Rose saw the boys perform at a rehearsal once and talked to them once and still saw something worth not only remembering and preserving in a representation of their music but something worth making her own in order to showcase that brief but vital connection they all had.
I’m still so unwell about this show

I feel like we as a society sleep on the lyricism that exists within the JATP soundtrack.
Like "I feel your rhythm in my heart. You are my brightest burning star. I never knew a love so real. We're heaven on earth. Melody and words. When we're together we're in perfect harmony", "Consider me the pearly gates to your new favorite thrills", "The rain don't blind the rising souls, they got too much to see", " "If I could take us back, if I could just do that, and write in every empty space the words "I love you" in replace, then maybe time would not erase me.", " The words I most regret are the ones I never meant to leave unsaid", "Love me as I am. I'll hold your music here inside my hands", "When all the days felt black and white, those were the best shades of my life", "Wake up if it's all you do. Look out, look inside of you. It's not what you lost, it's what you'll gain, raising your voice to the rain", "Life is a risk but I will take it, close my eyes and jump", "And I use the pain, 'cause it's part of me and I'm ready to power through it", "Keep dreaming like we'll live forever, but live it like it's now or never"

Thinking about… Julie just casually wearing her Sunset Curve bedazzled shirt and the boys just seeing it like “…huh?¿? Hey… where’d you get that…”
Julie saying that she found it in her mom’s stuff but didn’t think too much about it since her mom probably got it second hand from somewhere and then bedazzled it. “She probably got it from eBay and then customized it. It’s just kind of funny that it’s your guy’s.”
And they’re all looking at each other bc they know that the white with the black lettering shirts were the ones that they handed out whereas maybe the black with white lettering were more “mass produced” so the three know “we handed out that shirt to someone 👁️👁️”
There’s a moment where Julie has to throughly explain to the three that eBay is not a location but just a website. And that is it just one site and there’s no ‘a Bay’ or like a ‘b Bay’ or ‘c Bay’ (it took an embarrassing amount of time to explain the concept to the three)
They explain that yeah it could be possible that it’s second hand but is also possible that the boys personally gave the shirt to her mom so now they’re trying rack their brain and think. They are just thinking out loud like Luke saying,
“The night we died there was that girl who was cleaning tables that Reggie gave a shirt to. And then those girls in line….”
Julie shrugs and says that her mom was in a couple bands so probably acquired it during one of those incidents.
As Alex thinks about it he asks,
“…didn’t that girl who was cleaning tables say she was in a couple bands?”
Julie has never seen them think so much about one thing and focus this much on something and it’s just a little weird since the chances of them actually interacting with her mom is real low. Nonetheless she shrugs as she says, “My mom’s name is Rose if that helps you guys any.”
And the three just instantly realize at the same time. Luke and Alex just look at Reggie,
“YOU HIT ON JULIE’S MOM!”
“I was being nice 😭”

JATP Season 2 Wishlist
that i wrote in my notes app back in:
Tumblr media
and realized i never posted it here? tbf i'm rarely on tumblr. but because i really miss them rn i want to share my ✨ brainrot ✨ that i had back when i thought they were getting a renewal.
Carrie Wilson
she was my biggest flaw in Season 1. I wish her "redemption arc" is fleshed out more in Season 2; give her either more context & backstory to validate her reason for unnecessarily antagonizing Julie, or screentime to properly address how she's just projecting an emotion completely different into bitterness and anger into Julie's recovery
show particularly her earlier dynamic w/ Flynn and Julie? Maybe as Flynn calls her out, we'd get flashback glimpses prior to Rose's death (maybe even Double Trouble temporarily being Triple Threat 👉🏽👈🏽)
for some reason i'm picturing a scene where she's in her dance studio (she has one in their mansion, of course) practicing some of her Dirty Candy routine when she keeps messing up and not in the right mindset to keep dancing. i feel like the best (maybe easiest but whatever) way to guide the audience into her artist mind is to make her be a perfectionist. in frustration, she blows up for a minute before slumping onto the ground and reminisces her fun times with Julie & Flynn
also when you have her develop, please don't make her lose her femininity and the bubblegum pop music, it's great
Old Songs Resurfacing
it'll prove how detailed & thorough you are as a screenwriter if you pay off the songs mentioned in Season 1 in passing to be actual songs in Season 2
Unreleased: Get Lost, Long Weekend, Crooked Teeth, My Name is Luke, and if that riff from the scene in EP. 5 that spurred on the Bobby reveal isn't from one of these songs, add that too
Demo Album: Late Last Night, Lakeside Reflection, In Your Starlight
Willex
imagine your queer couple gets to have their first kiss first than your het main couple, not only will that settle Madi & Charlie's statements about being uncomfortable in doing a kissing scene and maintaining the priority of Juke's emotional over physical relationship, it would also make an powerful statement
Reggie's Character Arc
i know that he initially had an arc that involved a romance with Flynn but because of the ages of who they casted, they scrapped it and didn't have time to rewrite the scripts for him as filming neared, so they have time to adapt to how jeremy portrayed him for season 2: a lovable dork who craves familial love
since there's a possibility that lifers can now see the boys, maybe some found family trope for Reggie and Ray Molina?
he has pretty much formed a parasocial relationship with him at this point
so why not instead of a love interest, Reggie can have his character arc develop & we see his family before thru flashbacks and paralleling those in the current times because he sees Ray as a father figure
picture this: it's raining, Bobby opens the garage door to the sound of knocking, the boys find Reggie soaking wet and out of breath when he tries to say he doesn't know where else to go then the boys immediately figure out another fight in the Peters household happened. Reggie tries to talk again when Alex (because even though they're the airhead-sarcastic duo, they know they love each other) runs up to hug him and tells the other he doesn't have to say anything
cut to a freshly showered Reggie, quietly watching tv with Bobby, Luke, and Alex in the garage, eating whatever
also a solo acoustic country song, pls. just to make him happy
The Aftermath of the Deaths
for both the boys and Rose
we get parallels about how Bobby dealt with trauma and grief to Julie
like, the reason why the clothes are still in there (are to have costume changes for the boys) is because Bobby immediately moved out of the house (therefore also the garage) and left the clothes there because he couldn't bear to burn it, or visit the boys' houses to break the news to their families and return the clothes, or donate it somewhere so he just...left it. it would make for a more solid reason (for costume changes) and an emotional context as to how Bobby really tried to forget them because it was "easier."
it would also make sense why Carrie and Julie ended up friends. Rose probably was there for Bobby when they discovered what happened at the alleyway, so they stayed friends over the years and had their respective families but still kept in touch, (bonus points if absolutely nothing romantic happened between them! yay to normalizing platonic male-female relationships) and why Rose would immediately think of Bobby's three late bandmates to send for Julie when she was on her deathbed
Bobby never really "moved on" (because grief is a really complex thing). it's showed that he has a therapist and everything, and this could definitely have some aftereffects on his daughter. Carrie growing up seeing her father be this amazing rockstar but a negligent father and only showing love in ways she doesn't need (like riches and fame and connections to the music industry) because he's actually a really lonely man on the inside and no one can see that except for Bobby's spouse and Carrie. it'd explain why Carrie is spoiled, and other negative character traits that Carrie has on the surface
it's even why Bobby changed his name to Trevor: 1) Bobby is so closely associated to Sunset Curve and it's an absolute pain to be reminded of that every day, 2) it's a stage name and artists really do get that
More Worldbuilding
they already had some pretty creative concepts/ideas in the first season, so why not expand/expound on them a bit more
the instruments are attached to their souls that's why the boys at first can only touch them, like how Willie's skateboard and helmet are attached to him
which is why when they attach themselves to the world of the present, they gather up energy and focus on touching tangible things like the picture frame
this may follow the logic toward the end where they are finally able to touch Julie because she has become attached to their souls. emotionally.
More Creative Collaboration
i believe in the principle that when a story is finally released/published/told to the world, the world shares it. this is also visible in film/tv where when the scripts are finished and actors receive them, the story becomes part of theirs to work on. which means that they have some sort of autonomy over their characters' motivations, a chance to be heard of their ideas and pitches, and why some certain scenes wouldn't work, etc etc. it doesn't just become the director's story nor the screenwriters'.
the actors' ideas such as Perfect Harmony and their solos from Nothing to Lose are great because they let them in. they took risks, and it paid off incredibly well. more of that please. have them be a part of the writing process, (also the story), but never forget what made the music production great in the first place. be coherent and don't be like others that let too many hands work on one piece—it will lose its sound, its identity.
Julie Knowing
that Nick is possessed by Caleb. ohmygOD. hear me out.
the same S1 ending will play somewhere in 2x01, but it will be revealed that Julie was watching through the window the entire time and when she opens the door to receive the flowers, that last look she gives him is actually her scheming.
determined to get Nick back, imagine The Promised Neverland's level of mindgames Julie could play with Caleb because we already know our girl's smart
Free Willie Willie's Freedom
since the boys feel indebted to Willie's help, they insist on helping him too with getting rid of Caleb's stamp
maybe through his connection with Alex? or maybe Willie's family or friends who are still lifers (which is unlikely but either way). he needs to be saved !!
Song Sequences Ideas
juke counter melody duet like Rini's "Even When/The Best Part," Shane & Mitchie's "Wouldn't Change a Thing," or dodie & Jon Cozart's "a love song/a non love song"
emotional carrie ballad paired with lyrical hiphop choreo
willex song - i absolutely have no idea where this could go directionally but maybe alex on an acoustic guitar with a really soft sweet tune
reprises of S1 songs but in the complete opposite of their original style (the fandom's lonelier All Eyes on Me version, i see u)
nick guitar solo - just because Sacha actually plays, idk how it'd fit in to the plot yet but hey
Nothing to Lose (Reprise) - back in the '90s, a producer manipulates Bobby to sign a record deal to become a star but on one condition: disassociate himself with Sunset Curve, to which he first declines until he slowly gets persuaded. (sort of like Todrick Hall's So Lucky to Be You meets Lyn Lapid's Producer Man)
"So how about it, Bobby Shaw? Do we have a deal?"
"Trevor."
"I'm sorry?"
"Call me Trevor Wilson."
i'm pretty sure someone made an animatic with this idea too but i cannot for the life of me find it !!
7. Season 2 starts the same way as Season 1 does before the opening song plays
Black screen that reads a text "Hollywood 1995"
a pan down to the Orpheum's overhead sign that reads "SUNSET CURVE SOLD OUT"
cut to the interior with Rose finishing up her cleaning when a stage manager calls out: "Sunset Curve!" to which Bobby abruptly stops his pacing back and forth to look up. he and Rose look at each other. music swells until...
cut to him running onto the alleyway, "are they still not finished eating? those gluttons are dead to me i swear—" he cuts off his own words when he sees the boys getting dragged onto stretchers. but we, the audience, don't see it. just a close up of bobby as the ambulance lights reflects his face. rose comes up behind him, still clutching their t-shirt.
[i honestly have no idea if Bobby should get on stage because it just proves Luke's theory of The Orpheum's opening bands eventually becoming big & successful so it'll explain the Trevor Wilson fame even though at first he only did it for the boys, or if he shouldn't because according to the article Julie googled he ran away immediately after they were pronounced in the scene] but either way, this is how the opening starts.
then it progresses to Rose and Bobby respectively having children so they could parallel each other blah blah
8. Julie plays a simple song on the piano while the guys watch her in awe
Storytelling through Props
let's dive deep into Rose's luggage/suitcase and use the props to head for Julie's emotional attachment with them
they already did it with the wardrobe: Rose wears the black leather vest in the pilot while Julie wears the same thing in EP 6
add depth to the characters' relationships like us finding out Julie's multilayered necklace is actually a gift from Carrie or something
SOYON ANN YOU'RE A GIFT FROM GOD. Bobby's necklace is present in both young and old!him
**Rose in flashback scenes should be wearing clothes we've already seen Julie in Season 1 just for greater effect.
The Bobby Conflict
definitely needs to be brought up again by Season 2; they only discarded somewhere in the middle because more pressing matters like the boys' existence blipping away was pushed to the forefront of the story
however, The Bobby Conflict changes. it'll be cleared up that he was offered a record deal as a solo artist by a manipulative producer. and given that the poor boy is only 17 (too, maybe), he agrees. what he doesn't know is the contract's fine print: giving up Sunset Curve's royalties
that information clears it up to the audience and the band, so the conflict becomes this: Bobby's Survivor's Guilt. god wouldn't that be so good tackling that in a kids'/family show.

I’ve always thought that "Hope ur ok" by Olivia Rodrigo and "The Story" by Conan Gray could easily have been songs Bobby wrote but never recorded, because they’re “as good as Luke’s” or something like that.
I don’t think the lyrics completely match the little we know about the characters’ backstories, but that could definitely be explained by artistic freedom, or maybe I just can’t think big enough.
Anyway, three years ago I said to myself I’d write something based on those songs, but I never did. Maybe you’d like to take a look at the lyrics and see if they inspire you? I hope you’ll reach your goal :)
Thank you for this prompt, and awesome excuse to listen to these two great songs again! I hope you like what I ended up coming up with. It's definitely a pretty abstract inspiration, so if you end up wanting to later, you could easily write something else yourself with this concept :)
Send me prompts to help me reach my 2024 writing goal!
“Are you writing?”
Bobby startles, slamming his hand over the fretboard of Rose’s guitar to silence the last echoes of his playing.
Ray, hovering in the half-open doorway, gives him an apologetic smile. “I should’ve knocked. Didn’t mean to interrupt.”
“You didn’t.” Bobby’s gripping the guitar like a lifeline, tense and defensive. He makes an effort to relax. “I mean– I didn’t hear you come home.”
“Rose is still bringing the bags in,” Ray explains. “Will you join us for dinner?”
“Sure.”
Ray doesn’t say anything more, but he also doesn’t leave, and Bobby’s gaze flicks nervously toward the notebook laying open on the ottoman in front of him. At the moment, it’s mostly filled with scribbled chords and scratched-out lyrics– nothing incriminating, really, but he finds himself silently praying Ray won’t come closer and look at it anyway.
Maybe because all the other times Bobby’s let Ray and Rose “take a look at the song he’s been writing,” they’ve been neat recreations of Sunset Curve songs Luke wrote, transcribed from memory with a couple random doodles and typos thrown in to make them look new. He’s never been a writer like Luke was, so he didn’t know how wrong it was to claim a whole song came to him easily and all at once, until he actually did try to sit down and write something of his own for once, and ended up with this jumbled mess.
He doesn’t know how to explain to Ray and Rose why this song is different. He doesn’t know how to explain why he’s writing a song in the first place.
He wouldn’t be able to play it in front of anyone. It’s too… not as good as Luke’s.
An hour later, he’s put Rose’s guitar away and hidden his journal at the very bottom of his sock drawer, and he’s sitting at the kitchen table, shoveling arroz con pollo into his mouth so he doesn’t have to make conversation.
Regrettably, his roommates are not exactly the “let Bobby get away with not making conversation” types.
“So!” Rose says, laying her fork down on her plate in a terrifyingly decisive manner. “Bobby, niño. How was your day? Get up to anything exciting while we were out?”
Bobby chews slowly, glancing from Rose to Ray and back again and wondering what he could’ve possibly told her.
They both keep looking at him, waiting for an answer, to the point where their expectant silence starts to become too much to bear. He swallows heavily and says, “I didn’t, like. Get into your liquor cabinet or something, if that’s what you’re asking.”
Ray chokes on a laugh, ducking his head to hide it, but Rose just frowns, eyes bright with concern. “Cariño, this is not an interrogation, you’re not in trouble. We just… care about your interests. We want you to feel like you can share things with us.”
Bobby stabs halfheartedly at his dinner. “I know,” he grumbles unconvincingly. “I know I can–”
But he can’t even finish the sentence, can’t assure them that he trusts them when he’s keeping the biggest secret in the world from them– that his entire career is a lie, that he has to process his darkest thoughts in private because they’ll hear one note of his original music and know he’s a fraud.
“I borrowed your guitar today,” he says finally, just to get them off his back. “Hope that’s okay.”
Rose’s smile is warm but satisfied, like she got exactly what she wanted from him. “Of course, sweetheart, any time. What’s ours is yours.”
Bobby relaxes a little, nods his thanks and changes the subject by asking about both their days at work, hoping that will be the end of it.
But of course it isn’t. It never is, when Rose Molina sets her mind to something.
He’s getting ready for bed that night when Rose knocks on the door. Bobby considers pretending to be asleep already. He considers climbing out the window, changing his name again, and disappearing into the wilderness to become a goat farmer. But he knows any of that would just be delaying the inevitable.
“Come in.”
The door opens, revealing Rose in her Christmas pajamas (red and fuzzy, with snowflakes on them), holding a mug in each hand.
“Tea?” she offers. “I thought you could use some, it’s cold tonight.”
Bobby’s pretty sure the cold rock in his stomach has nothing to do with the weather, but he nods anyway, sits on the bed next to her and takes one of the mugs, if only just for something warm to hold.
Rose sips her own tea and leans in close, laying a comforting hand on his thigh. It lets Bobby relax a little, reminds him that Ray and Rose are not his parents, that they actually do have his best interests at heart.
“Ray said you were writing a song today,” Rose says cautiously, and he doesn’t even flinch.
“Trying to,” he admits. “Not sure it was working very well.”
“I get that.” Rose pauses, and then continues, “You haven’t written a song in a little while.”
God, in longer than she thinks. He shrugs.
“You don’t have to share anything with us that you’re not ready to,” she promises. “Songs are special, they’re… deep and personal and publicly vulnerable like no other art form is. You know that– you’ve written twice as many songs as I have.”
Bobby almost chokes on his tea, chokes out, “Right.”
“All I’m saying,” Rose continues, “is if you ever want to talk… about the feelings or experiences you’ve been trying to convey in a song… then Ray and I are always here to listen.”
Bobby holds his mug, breathing in the steam. He thinks about the journal stuffed in his drawer, hiding lyrics that can never see the light of day. He thinks about all Ray and Rose have done for him in the three years since his life fell apart. He thinks about the fact that for all the things he can’t tell them, there are a thousand more that he can.
So he tells Rose a story. About the boys who filled his life with so much life before their own was snuffed out. About problems he couldn’t solve, prayers left unanswered, feelings he didn’t understand.
And when he’s done, when he’s poured his heart out and Rose kisses him goodnight, he digs his journal back out and scrawls down the feelings he couldn’t put into words with a guitar in his hands.
He writes his boys’ story, a song just for him.

Today is the day I realised that Rose Molina straight up bedazzled a t shirt that three dead boys gave her. Like. She met them, they died, and then she bedazzled their merch. I don't know what to read into that, exactly, but I think it would say a lot about her if I knew where to start unpacking it.

god i want a rose and the petal pushers spinoff almost more than i want a jatp s2
honestly it was @1mnobodywhoareyou that brought up the question abt Julie saying "Trevor introduced me to rock" but Rose had literally played in a rock band? whether not that an intentional or a script slip up, that is such a golden opportunity.
Imagine Julie hanging with her mom doing some chores and Rose says something that expose Rose used to play rock and Julie is like "HELLO MOM????? YOU PLAYED IN A BAND??? AND DIDN'T TELL ME??" and Rose would be like doing dishes and going "all right i did...oh well, now you know, maybe later i can show you some of my gear, some old stuff i have." And julie is like "?????? The fuck MOM OF COURSE I WANT THIS"
Rose simply deciding to introduce Julie to rock by playing her favorite artists and taking Julie to concerts, so Julie grows up looking up to a ton of bands and rock stars, such as Trevor, until she's 12 and one day her mom drops information that she was in the scene back in her teen years. So their dynamics becomes something like "suddenly my good vibes music teacher mom is actually a retired punk kid from the 90's who played in like 5 different bands and toured with her four broke friends around the country and has written tons of music and everyone in the scene know her so thats why she gets free tickets to concerts all the time bc people in the industry remember that fucking legend she was"
On a small addition, imagine Rose being actually a few years older than sunset curve and they were actually crazy for The Petal Pushers way before they had their own band, but by the time they were playing the orpheum, Rose had actually retired to go to school and already planning to move in with her boyfriend and the girls from Petal Pushers had moved on on their paths. Imagine them not recognizing Rose without her styled hair and punk makeup. Or. even better. That was the reason Bobby went to her bc he recognized her from the stage and wouldn't lose a freaking chance of talking to her (and making a move on her. Duh. Its not everyday you can flirt with a rock legend) and later in life, he still sends her tickets to all his shows and she always goes bc independently of not actually ending with her, he still admires her.

Julie + wonder?
Julie's first memory is full of her mother.
Music too, of course; her mother had breathed music, but it's Rose that makes the memory, that gives the music life.
Even now, without Julie straining too hard, her mother is still singing, her voice soaring over the swell of the piano. Her smile is incandescent and her skin and hair are glowing in the golden afternoon.
The warmth and wonder of it had awakened something in Julie, and she clings to it now whenever she plays; it's never without a sharp pang anymore, but her mother's bright smile and strong voice urge her to keep the music alive.

uhm... 👉👈 Ray hitman AU? maybe? if you were up for it? pretty pretty please? 🙏
-For those who don't know I made a shitpost about Ray being a hitman because I looked up housing prices in Los Feliz (and how medical debt works) and SIR HOW THE HELL DO YOU AFFORD THAT HOUSE ON A PHOTOGRAPHER'S SALARY.
-It starts when one of the Petal Pushers has a very abusive, stalker ex. She had tried everything, but even with a restraining order, it isn't enough. Law enforcement just shrugs and suggests she moves (again) after 'someone' breaks into her house, ransacks it and kills her cat.
-It's not like Rose and Ray meant to kill him. But it's what happens. They manage to make it look like an accident. They never tell Violet, but deep down she knows.
-Somehow word gets around and they suddenly have a booming side hustle of taking out abusive spouses, partners, exes, stalkers, etc.
-Ray starts to take on the most of the wet work, with Rose doing the research and being his alibi.
-He's always been a great shot. He won Rose so many stuffed animals at carnival shooting games that they had to start donating them to shelters.
-They do have very strict rules on who they work with and who their targets are. Ray gets very good at stalking people with a giant long distance tele-lens. Both the people who hire them (to make sure they're telling the truth) and the targets.
-The prices they charge vary, and they even have perfected the scheme of 'take out life insurance on him and we get half of the pay out' for people who are in a bad financial situation. Those are trickier because he has to make the deaths look like an accident.
-Listen I'm not saying a few of the plants in Rose's Plant Wall in the studio are toxic. Of course they aren't, they have children running around in there.
-The ones under the grow-light in the attic though....
-He tells everyone he's a photographer but really, he only knows how to work the tele-lens. Rose jokes he could become the world's greatest paparazzi if he wanted to.
-Rarely does he get up close and personal with the targets, but he did made an exception once when 'My Ex Is An Abusive Scumbag number 87' really, really wanted Ray to know the client was right by going after his kid from his first marriage, because his favourite target (their client) wasn't there to take his rage out on.
-He starts hitting the gym after that because it was a liiiiittle too close for comfort.
-As spoken by @floating-in-the-blue: THAT'S WHY HE'S SO FIRM.
-They buy a big house and have money to send the kids to summer camp and fancy music school and the likes. When people ask he just smiles and shrugs and said he signed an NDA so he can't talk about most of his Big Photography Clients.
-Carlos and Julie think their dad is the biggest goober and he totally is. He forgets where he put his phone because he's too busy with the 700 other details of his job. He can tell if any of the parts of his work-toolbox have been moved even a millimeter.
-Just imagine Reggie like: wow Ray really does a lot of research about his photography clients, I wonder if it's like an engagement shoot or something.
-IT WAS NOT AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT. There was a shooting, though.
-He's a little shell-shocked but still follows Ray down to where he meets the client to promise her it's done, and she cries and tells him thank you and mentions some of the awful things the guy has done or threatened to do, and then he gets it.
-They stage it to look like a break-in gone wrong. Reggie helps knock some shit over when they're distracted like: he's a ghost there are no finger prints. He stays after Ray leaves and watches the woman 'come home' and call the cops. She's either a really good actress, or the tears are just more tears of relief.
-He's really, really glad the abusive guy didn't come back as a ghost though, that would have been so awkward.
-Reggie decides that Julie can never, ever know.
