Roots Cabin Brings Personalization to New Canadian Flagship
American camp buddies Don Green and Michael Budman founded Roots in 1973, inspired by their summer adventures in Canada’s Algonquin Park to dream up products to celebrate their love of all things Canadian. They skyrocketed to success including, last month, being named an iconic Canadian brand by Interbrand.
The Roots co-founders sold a majority stake in 2015 to a private equity firm in order to focus on their apparel and lifestyle brand’s “next phase of growth.” Case in point: The Roots Cabin, a customization lab at its new flagship store in Toronto’s Yorkdale shopping center. The lab aims to appeal to customers looking to personalize its leather goods.

While Roots has always offered a customization service, the 5,000 square-foot space makes it part of the customer experience. Employees at the Roots Cabin encourage shoppers to get involved, from checking out fabric and leather samples, then apply a digital interface to customize monograms, color choices and other design elements for an additional $100 (and three weeks) to personalize a melton jacket or leather bag.
Roots Canada has created a following due to quality product and by building relationships with Canadian musicians and bands (and Apple Music). The Yorkdale store offers DJ stations for special events, along with a different outdoor theme in every changing room, making the spaces eminently “Instagrammable,” said Alex Jones, Roots’ VP of real estate.

“Footwear customization has existed for quite some time, and we have been watching that,” commented Roots Canada CEO Jim Gabel to The Financial Post about customization moves by Nike, Adidas, Reebok , Kith and Under Armour. Gabel was joined by Budman and Green for the ribbon-cutting at the Yorkdale store’s grand opening last week, as seen below.

“Everybody talks about different generations driving retail growth, and when we look at that millennials, those aged 21 to 33, they are outpacing spending in the market” and driving the customization trend, said Tamara Szames, fashion and footwear analyst at NPD Group.

“That works well for Roots because when you look at Roots, the majority of consumers are in that demographic,” Szames said, as 75 per cent of the brand’s customers are under the age of 40.

Roots has 119 stores in Canada, five in the US, 114 in Taiwan and 24 in China, and its elixir is personalization and slow-fashion rather than speed.
“Most retailers operating in bricks and mortar now realize that they have to provide an exceptional experience when customers walk into the store,” said Diane Brisebois, president of the industry association Retail Council of Canada, to The Financial Post.
“Those who are more successful and (performing) above trend are those who own their own brand,” she added, citing Lululemon, Aritzia, Groupe Dynamite and Lush Cosmetics.
“Multibrand retailers are facing more competition from online sellers, and that is probably their biggest challenge right now. Vendors are going on Amazon and Alibaba and other platforms, and they are selling directly to consumers.”
