Here's Steve one of our engineers with St Philips Church for the Charity called Room at the inn Warrington. They came to us with there Christmas Nativity float which is towed around the community as there sound system was missing some parts Steve was straight on there case and we donated a 12 volt to 24 volt converter to get them raising as much money for the homeless . They will be going round Westbrook Warrington raising money for the homeless. Room At The Inn

The American motel phenomenon has been with us for nearly a century, a byproduct of roads and cars that gave people their wings...I mean tires...to wander far astray from home. Whereas all cities had hotels by that time, the notion of a simple, basic place to spend the night while traveling by car instead of the train brought with it a new opportunity.

And so the motel...a portmanteau of “motor” and “hotel”...was born, with many tourist courts featuring covered garages for their patrons’ four-wheeled steeds.  By the 1950s, the rise of the interstate highway brought with it corporate chain motels that were bigger than their earlier counterparts. Slowly but surely, these big box motels put the squeeze on the little guys, with the number of US motels dropping by about 75% from the 1960s to the present. Travel demographics also began to play a prominent role as the number of female travelers increased. Roughly 50% of all business travelers are women; furthermore, about 85% of all travel decisions (from business to family leisure) are made by women. Thus, in order to make rooms female-friendly, matters such as safety, amenities, and predictability became the primary concerns. So long to the exterior-only-entry of old, and hello to the safety of interior-entry-only rooms today.

I’m looking at you, Hampton and Holiday Inns.

Today, though, amid a wave of nostalgia, old motels are being purchased and revived, offering simultaneously a throwback and hipster rendition of the mid-century mom-and-pop motel. We have witnessed this all over the country, but perhaps the best nearby microcosm of this revival is in Tucumcari NM, where several of our friends operate period motels that have been given a new lease on life.

The Blue Swallow (opened 1941), Safari Motel (1959), and Roadrunner (1964) all provide different glimpses into the American past, with rooms tastefully appointed in period pieces and TLC (Moon Pies and vibrating beds anyone?) that take the traveler back in time. It’s kitschy. It’s cool. And it shows that the evolution of marketing sometimes brings you back full circle.

This Tucumcari trio has the added benefit of being on Old Route 66, which already has plenty of “time travelers” seeking the past. They, along with a few other vintage properties lining the Boulevard, stand in stark opposition to the shiny new box motels out by the freeway.

Perhaps the best way to escape the 21C is to visit Wildwood NJ, a small seaside resort town lost in the 1950s. They rather like it that way, and have managed, for the time being at least, to thwart developers from building high-rise condos along the beach. Instead, travelers, many of whom are French Canadian, can enjoy a retro experience unmatched anywhere in the US.

These one-of-a-kind motels don’t offer points, have exterior doorways, seldom have elaborate breakfast rooms, and don’t have centralized reservations lines. Many are offered on Expedia, but that’s the extent of their concessions to modernity, other than wifi.

One thing they offer, though, that the big chains cannot: an experience. Given that the experience economy is running at full steam, all the bonus points in the world cannot begin to compensate for this. Go ahead. Sit on an old metal chair by the pool. Chat with other travelers. Enjoy the piped-in hits of the 50s and 60s. And for a night or two, allow yourself to be whisked back to a different era.

As much as my wife and I stay in corporate big boxes on our travels, we do so only when we cannot find an up-to-date “retrotel.” We would much rather be doing that than spending another night in a saccharine chain motel trying to sleep to the whirring sounds of tires on concrete. You can’t trump a good experience.

And that is a pillow on which we like to lay our heads.
