Thoughts on Ron and Hermione as a ship?
thank you very much for the ask, @thesilverstarling!
i’ll state my position straight away: book ron and hermione are the best of the canon couples.
they will have a long and extremely happy marriage made rich by great and stalwart love, lust, fun, and faithfulness, rather than held together by duty and couples’ therapy like so many readers and authors (including jkr, who seems to have decided to spend the years since the conclusion of the series failing to understand anything about her own characters) tend to think.
i will state another position straight away: lest i seem like i’m just a fan with blinkers on, i think this even though hermione is, by far, my least favourite member of the trio. if she were real i would detest her, and i dislike how she is treated by the narrative as always justified in her negative characteristics. i like fanon hermione - perfect and preternaturally good - even less.
as a result, i think that it’s ridiculous that jkr has said that she thought ron needed to ‘become worthy’ of hermione. they belong together as equals - which is what they’re set up in the narrative as being from the off - and i hate seeing that undermined.
because ronald weasley? he’s an icon. and he doesn’t get anywhere near the respect he deserves in fandom.
there are multiple reasons for this - ron’s narrative purpose is to be the everyman sidekick, and so he is able to be less special than harry or hermione (the helper-figure); the amount of aristocracy wank in this fandom means that the weasleys’ ordinariness is less appealing to writers than making harry have twenty different lordships and call himself hadrian; the narrative interrogates ron’s flaws - especially his capacity for jealousy - much more intensively than it interrogates either hermione’s (cruel, inflexible, meddling) or harry’s (reckless, self-absorbed, judgemental) - but one i feel is particularly significant is that ron is such a british character that many of his traits are not understood as intended by non-british readers.
in particular - as is outlined in this excellent meta by @whinlatter - ron’s sense of humour isn’t indicative of immaturity or a lack of seriousness, but is, in fact, evidence that he’s the most emotionally aware of the trio.
ron is shown throughout the series to understand how both harry and hermione need to have their emotions approached - and i think there is no piece of writing which says this better than crocodile heart by @floreatcastellumposts:
That was what she liked most about Ron, she thought vaguely. He was very good at being suitably outraged on your behalf. For Harry, for her, for Neville. That sort of thing mattered, when you were hurt or embarrassed or wronged in some way. You needed to have someone else on your side, to be as emotional as you felt, maybe even more so, so that you might feel a bit more normal. It was very decent of him, and she was not sure he realised he did it.
ron’s inherent emotional awareness is an enormous source of comfort to other people. he does the work which isn’t flashy or special - he makes tea and tells jokes and is just there - but which is needed in healthy human relationships far more frequently than a willingness to fight to the death for the other person.
[as an aside, this normality - even though i think it is assumed rather than justified by the text - is also what ginny provides for harry. if you believe that hinny are a good couple but romione aren’t… i can’t help you.]
but let’s look at some specific reasons why ron and hermione belong together:
their communication styles mesh perfectly. ron is the only person hermione knows who feeds her love of being challenged and debated, and who is able to engage in this way of communicating without becoming irate when she refuses to back down. ron is good at picking his battles, but he’s also good at recognising that hermione’s tendency to argue isn’t intended to be confrontational a lot of the time - it’s just the way she works through feelings and problems. he’s far more easy-going about her tendency to nag, interrupt, try to provoke arguments, or speak condescendingly than he’s given credit for - and hermione evidently respects this, since when he does tell her not to push a situation (above all, when she’s trying to needle harry into talking about sirius), she listens to him.
that ron and hermione’s tendency to bicker is taken by fans to be a bad thing is because it’s something harry - from whose perspective the narrative is written - doesn’t understand. harry is extremely conflict-avoidant - he tends to take being pushed on views and opinions he has to be insulting; and he has a tendency to assume that he is right which is just as profound as hermione’s. he and ginny communicate not by debating, but by ginny having no time for his rigidity and refusing to indulge it - but ron and hermione bickering about everything is not a negative thing within their specific emotional dynamic.
[as another aside, this glaring chasm in communication styles is why harry and hermione would be a disaster as a couple.]
they each provide validation the other needs. it’s clear - reading between the lines - that hermione is a tremendously lonely person. the friendlessness of her initial few weeks at hogwarts seems to be a continuation of her experience as a child, and - outside of ron and harry - that friendlessness endures through her schooldays. i’m always struck, for example, by the fact that, when she falls out with ron in prisoner of azkaban, she has no-one else to spend time with, and that this is only avoided in half-blood prince because harry decides not to freeze her out. i don’t think her friendship with ginny is anywhere near as close as fanon seems to imply (ginny has no interest in being nagged either), nor do i think that she’s anywhere near as close to neville (not least because she is so condescending to him) as she’s often written to be.
and this loneliness seems to stretch beyond hogwarts. the absence of hermione’s parents’ from the narrative is - in a doylist sense - clearly just a device to maximise time with the trio all together, but the watsonian reading is that she doesn’t have a particularly good relationship with them. hermione’s obviously upper-middle-class background - the name! the skiing! the holidays in the south of france! - can be presumed, i think, to come with a series of expectations from her parents which she feels constantly that she’s not entirely meeting, particularly expectations attached to academic success.
[for example, the grangers - were she a muggle child - would undoubtedly have ambitions for her to attend an elite university and then go into a prestigious career. tertiary education of the type that they’re familiar with doesn’t seem to exist in the wizarding world - most careers seem to be taught by apprenticeship - and this, alongside all the other divides between the magical and muggle worlds which contribute to the distance between them, would be one very obvious area in which she felt the need to prove herself to them.]
ron, too, has quite a difficult relationship with his position in the family - voldemort’s locket is not wrong to point out that he seems to receive considerably less of his mother’s emotional attention than ginny or the rest of his brothers - and he too is constrained by expectations which he doesn’t know how to explain he has no interest in - above all, molly’s desire for her sons to achieve top grades and go into the ministry.
he also suffers while at hogwarts from being ‘harry potter’s best friend’, something which harry never appreciates. but hermione does. she recognises ron’s jealousy and never allows harry to minimise it (and she and ron are very much aligned on having no respect for harry’s saviour and martyr complexes). she appreciates ron’s strengths - above all his kindness and his sense of humour - and makes him feel as though he’s achieved things with them. and ron does the same for her; he is hugely observant when it comes to her, and he challenges and defends her.
the two of them clearly spend a lot of time together one-on-one while harry’s involved in his various shenanigans (including outside of school - hermione has often arrived at the burrow days or even weeks before harry, and they seem to write to each other frequently when apart). they do this within a relationship which is fundamentally equal. one issue with hinny is that, post-war, harry is going to have to get used to seeing ginny as a peer, rather than as someone he has to protect. but ron and hermione never have that issue - equality is baked into their relationship from the off.
because, to be quite frank, fandom overstates the role that jealousy plays in their relationship. it’s true that ron certainly doesn’t acquit himself brilliantly when it comes to hermione’s relationship with viktor krum (it’s because he’s bi and doesn’t know it yet), and a tendency to externalise his insecurity into trying to make others also feel insecure is one of his primary negative traits (hermione does this too, via her patented lofty voice when she’s trying to condescend to people). but this is often taken as the initial red flag for how the relationship would crash and burn, and ron’s toxic jealousy is often used in fan-fiction as the trigger for emotional and physical violence towards hermione which, frequently, seems to drive her into the arms of either draco malfoy or severus snape… who are, of course, the first people we think of when we hear the words ‘not prone to jealousy’...
but i think it’s important to point out several things in defence of ron’s jealousy over krum. firstly, hermione evidently regards his jealousy as ridiculous - she’s upset by it, yes, but her upset must be understood as being caused by the fact that she wanted him to ask her out. she doesn’t think he’s being possessive, she thinks he’s being stupid. secondly, hermione is equally as jealous over ron’s crush on fleur delacour and relationship with lavender brown. she behaves just as cruelly when it comes to lavender as ron does when it comes to krum - and the narrative only treats her actions as more sympathetic or justified both because harry dislikes lavender too, and because, by that point in the series, jkr has dispensed with any inclination to ever criticise her.
but, outside of this teenage pettiness, ron is never jealous of hermione over things which matter. he is never jealous of her intelligence or competence or ambition or success (indeed, he defends her constantly from attacks designed to undermine her in these areas). for someone who struggles with being overshadowed by harry, he is never upset at being overshadowed by her. he is clearly going to be happy to support her in any of the career ambitions she can be written as having post-war.
and, on this point, i think it’s worth interrogating why so many readers still seem to feel uncomfortable with the idea of ron and hermione having a dynamic where she is the more ‘powerful’ one. [it’s always a bit trite to say ‘but what if the genders were reversed?’, but actually that’s not irrelevant here]. if hermione ends up taking the ministry by storm and ron becomes a stay-at-home father or has a job which is just to pay the bills, what, precisely, is wrong with that? why, precisely, should hermione regard ron making that choice for himself as a negative thing? hermione so often seems to leave ron in fan-fiction because of a lack of ambition - something which seems to be particularly common in dramione - but, in canon, she is shown to not particularly care if ron and harry do the bare minimum when it comes to studying etc. she nags them to do their work so they don’t get in trouble. she doesn’t nag them to do it to the same standard that she would.
and, actually, i think that ron being less ambitious than hermione is something which is key to how well they work. because ron provides not only emotional support, but emotional clarity.
hermione is shown throughout canon to - just as harry does - have a tendency to become obsessive to the detriment of her own health. she is also often - as harry is - emotionally or intellectually inflexible, and finds it hard to move on when what she feels or believes is proven to be wrong. both she and harry are micro-thinkers, who lean towards knee-jerk assumptions and stubborn convictions (and, indeed, hermione has a remarkably hagrid-ish tendency towards blind loyalty).
ron is none of these things. ron is a big-picture thinker (it’s why he’s so good at chess). he’s a pragmatist. he’s the least righteous of the three. he understands that faith and loyalty are choices, and that sometimes these choices will lead to outcomes which are bad or hard. he is the one of the three most willing to own up to having made mistakes. he is the one least likely to act on gut instinct (and, therefore, the hardest to fool - i think it’s worth emphasising that he clocks that tom riddle is tricking harry immediately, the only one of the trio to do so). he understands that things are a marathon, not a sprint. he is the least obsessive.
and these traits contribute to aspects of his character which are underappreciated. ron worries about hermione making herself ill during exams, or when she is using the time-turner, and makes an effort to get her to set healthy boundaries and redirect her anxiety. ron stands on a broken leg in front of sirius or goes into the forest to fight aragog not out of righteousness, but out of choice. ron takes over the burden of preparing buckbeak’s defence when it is clear that hermione is approaching burnout. ron is completely right that harry hasn’t done any long-term planning for the horcrux hunt, and his anger does force harry to tighten up after he leaves the trio. ron has a clear head in the middle of battle. ron makes harry and hermione laugh. ron is unafraid of human emotion. ron arrests harry’s tendency to brood over the little things by looking at the bigger picture. ron will always come back.
ron is bringing his politician wife regular cups of tea and making sure she doesn’t work all night. he is helping his lawyer wife to feel less upset over losing one case by reminding her that she’s won ten others. he is noticing stress creeping in and whirling her off for a dirty weekend, or even just a takeaway on the sofa. he is teaching his daughter to be proud of her ambition and his son to treat women as equals and both of his children that all you can do when you fuck up is apologise and try to do better. he is making hermione smile on the worst days of her life. he is helping her strategise her long-term goals when she gets stuck on the short-term ones. he is telling her straight when she needs to get it together. he is seeing a misogynistic head of department call hermione a ‘silly little girl’ and choosing to tell him exactly what he thinks of that.
ron is the ultimate wife guy. hermione is a very, very lucky lady.
#asks answered#asenora's opinions on ships#romione#ron weasley#hermione granger#ron is a wife guy#also may i be clear#ron is evidently unbelievably hot#the text says he looks like bill#who is so fit that harry can barely see when in his company#hermione you lucky thing

Hi! I love your writing think it’s phenomenal work. It’s really such a genuine and intimate depiction of Ginny. I also see you have an appreciation of Dean Thomas. I’d love to know why you think Ginny was attracted to him? What do you think their relationship was like and how did it help them for their next partners? I just think that pairing was really interesting and there’s not enough of them being friends.
❗️ Warning... big Dean & Ginny meta incoming ❗️
Firstly - thank you so so much for reading and enjoying my work (phenomenal!!! I’ll dine out on that all week - can't thank you enough).
Secondly - what great questions! This was such a fun thing to think through. Dean’s a quietly lovely character I have so much time for, despite being very underdeveloped in canon (cutting his arc to exclusively favour Neville’s? Side-eye forever). I'm definitely a paid up member of the Dean Thomas Fan Club.
Anyway….. the questions were so good I wrote this too-long meta on Ginny and Dean before going to bed because I apparently… cannot be stopped?
Why was Ginny attracted to Dean?
I think for this question it’s important to think about the timing of when Ginny and Dean became close and when they got together, and especially what Ginny was looking for during and after her relationship with King of Negging, Michael Corner. There are three weeks between the break-up with Michael and Gin getting together with Dean, so we can assume Ginny and Dean had already become close and maybe a little flirty when she was with Michael (Ginny Weasley likes to give herself a nice four-week breather between boyfriends, usually just in time to watch the early summer weather roll in. I for one respect the work rate and the consistency.)
Ginny is with Michael until late in her fourth year, until they break up after the Quidditch final in early June. Dean has his OWLs until late June (just realised Ginny dumps Michael right before his exams - this is how you get revenge on a Ravenclaw).
The events in the Department of Mysteries take place the day exams finish (cue iconic scene where Harry’s rushing up to the dormitory to grab his Cloak and save his godfather’s life and Seamus and Dean are trying to get him on the sesh, absolutely rate it, excellent from the lads). Ginny’s going out with Dean by the time she gets the train home, probably by the end of June.
Given the short turnaround time between relationships, I think it’s likely Ginny and Dean became close during the rest of the school year, where she was able to learn the following things about him (and implicitly compare him with Michael as Michael revealed himself to be, as the great prophet Ronald foresaw, ‘a bit of an idiot’):
Dean Thomas knows right from wrong (and really, really can’t stand Dolores Umbridge). In their first lesson with Umbridge, Dean is by far the person in the class who stands up to Umbridge the most after the trio (he actually comes out swinging a lot more than Ron does). He immediately subs in for Harry when Umbridge refuses to answer any more of Harry’s questions. He defends Lupin and Crouch-as-Moody when Umbridge criticises them (describing Crouch-as-Moody as a maniac but saying ‘we still learned loads’ is extremely funny - Dean's pedagogical expectations are low). Dean is an extremely enthusiastic DA member, he and Ginny often arrive at meetings or take part in dinnertime conversations about the DA together, and I think they likely became mates because they’re passionate about what the DA is trying to do. We know Gin likes a boy with a moral compass, a backbone, and a good sense of outrage in the face of injustice. (I cut this out of a much lengthier first draft of chapter one of Beasts, which had all the DA at the graduation ceremony, but this was their interaction in response to another character acting up: ‘[Ginny] feels an old rush of affection for Dean, a man who always had a good scowl in him when it mattered.’)
Dean’s a sweetheart, even if he’s a bit hopeless. Dean’s a character who is often trying to make people feel better about things and trying to give a bit of comfort – emphasis on trying, because he’s not always good at knowing exactly what to say. I think this is something Ginny would really value – she’s someone who, for all her fire, tries to comfort and support the people around her. I reckon she’s got a soft spot for a man with a heart in the right place and a chronic inability to find the right words to express it. ('“Don’t worry about it, Harry,” Dean muttered, hoisting his schoolbag onto his shoulder. “He’s just . . .” But apparently he was unable to say exactly what Seamus was, and after a slightly awkward pause followed him out of the room.' OotP, 221 - does this not sound like how Harry would try and comfort someone?) 👀
Dean is kind to the underdog. Dean is often seen hanging around with or partnering up with Neville, and in DH, we’ll also see Dean be very kind towards Luna. I think Ginny rates people who are kind to those who are socially awkward and excluded.
Relatedly... Dean loves Remus Lupin. I wrote about this a bit in this short reflection on Remus (and am writing about this at the moment so don’t want to get too spoilery if you’re reading Beasts…), but I have a feeling being Remus Lupin’s biggest fan would be a sure fire way to get a text back from Ginny Weasley.
Dean’s into sports. Like her soulmate, Ginny’s into fellow jocks (I think it's implied that Michael Corner was also on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team – three for three on Quidditch players, Ginevra, if you were on Love Island I’d say you have a type). I think she’d also be amused and endeared by Dean’s die-hard commitment to West Ham - she is Arthur Weasley’s daughter, after all, and she probably enjoys teasing him about how crap football sounds. (That bit in PS/SS where Dean’s yelling ‘send him off, ref!’ – 10/10 excellent Dean content). Also Dean does not seem threatened by Ginny’s Quidditch abilities, but instead just really wants to be on the team with her too, which is a nice change from Michael Corner, the Jack Berger of Hogwarts Quidditch. (Sorry Michael, I know you end up a gold star goodie by DH, but young Mike is a prick to our girl Gin).
Dean is a laugh. Chuckling at Ernie Macmillan in his Apparition classes, mucking about with mice in Transfiguration, getting the giggles because this Lockhart bloke has set a quiz asking students to name his ideal birthday gift: Dean is both fun and funny. That bit in GoF where Dean describes Warrington in Slytherin as a ‘big bloke who looks like a sloth’ – funny. The bit later in GoF where Dean rinses Harry for rejecting that curly-haired Hufflepuff girl who wants to go to the ball with him – also funny. Ginny Weasley likes a comedian and she also likes an audience. I think that means a big tick in the Dean Thomas column.
Dean's a creative. This is verging on headcanon territory, but I really do love the idea of Ginny finding her way back to writing in the years after Riddle and the diary. I can see her being drawn to someone who also has this gentle, expressive, artistic side to them.
Dean’s not averse to dealing in contraband Firewhiskey. If you’re a fourteen year old popular girl with a rulebreaking streak, the boy who can source you some Firewhiskey for an end of exams party from a cool kid like Harold Dingle is hot property.
Dean… er, really likes Harry. Not Gin's finest criteria for a boyfriend, but I think In GoF, the man draws Harry flying around the Horntail on his Firebolt and draws Cedric, his rival, with his head on fire. It’s not a hugely good look for Ginny, but I reckon Dean really liking Harry probably, in a strange, back-to-front kind of way, is another vote in his favour (Gin, you're messy, and I love you for it).
What was their relationship like?
I loved thinking about this question! It’s easier to write about why Ginny and Dean broke up than it is to write why they stayed together so long, and what good stuff they took from the relationship. Dean's easily bashed in Hinny fic in all sorts of different ways, and I don't think it really tallies with the really positive impression we get of him in canon. Ginny and Dean spend a lot of time together over the year - eating most of their meals together, training together, spending all of their Hogsmeade time with each other. I know it’s a teenage relationship, but this is still so much time to spend with one person. It also actually takes them quite a while to breakup, even if they’re ‘rocky’ for much longer. There's something to their relationship that must, on some level, have worked quite well. After all, it would have been a lot easier for Ginny to have dumped Dean if he was a crap boyfriend. It’s much harder to dump someone who is a good partner, but not the right partner for you.
I think that's the problem for Ginny: Dean was kind of perfect for her in lots of ways - but for the person she would have been if Riddle hadn't happened to her, and if the war hadn't happened. Their relationship was clearly based on a lot of mutual attraction and chemistry (that kiss Ron and Harry saw was intense, lads - there's a reason Harry was threatened by it, after all). I think Dean was proud as hell of Ginny, especially on the Quidditch pitch (he's so excited to tell her he's going to be on the team with her!). I think he would think she's super cool, and I like fics and headcanons about Dean that show him trying to internalise his feelings about his own dad into doing right by his girlfriend, even if that means overshooting and being overly chivalrous and over-protective with Gin. I think one of the reasons Ginny stayed in the relationship so long is because they genuinely got on, had a laugh with each other, and fancied each other, in a way that she would feel conflicted about when she still feels drawn to Harry.
Really I think it's Dean being so great that is the problem for Ginny. If she's with this really great guy and she's still feeling restless and like something's missing, she knows that means she's still not over Harry, and that means she's in trouble. I think it's why Ginny sabotages the relationship, in very understandable ways, and in the end she finds herself getting the ick over little things, and picks a fight to end it rather than come clean about being in love with someone else. (No judgement: again, messy girl representation is important).
Ultimately, I think Harry is perfect for the Ginny that actually exists, and Dean would be a good match for a hypothetical Ginny where there was no Harry, who doesn't have a family in the resistance, who doesn't have all this trauma from what happened with the diary, and who isn't shaped and forged by a childhood at war. Until DH, Dean doesn't seem to know anything about the Weasleys' involvement in the Order. We have no evidence anyone other than Harry, the Weasleys, Dumbledore and Hermione ever knew Ginny was possessed by Riddle, and I don't know that Ginny would volunteer the information to Dean. (The only reason she brings it up to Harry in OotP and again in HBP isn't because she wants emotional support for it - she only brings it up to try and help him. This is not a subject she talks openly about even with the person who knows most about what went down). This lack of knowledge about crucial parts of Ginny's life would mean huge gaps in understanding between them - not gaps that are Dean's fault, but that Ginny doesn't try to get him to bridge. Dean can't meet Ginny where she's at emotionally at the point in the series where they get together, in many ways because he's much closer to a normal teenager than she has been able to be up to that point. At the end of the day, Ginny's always going to want to be with the strange guy racing to the Department of Mysteries to rescue a loved one and fight Death Eaters on a Friday night than a nice normal guy who is planning on drinking his own weight in Firewhiskey to celebrate him finishing his Wizarding GCSEs.
How did it help them for their next partners?
I think Ginny would always speak highly of Dean, appreciate that he made her feel loved and someone a boyfriend should be proud of, and I think she would feel some guilt about what went down. I think, eventually, Dean would acknowledge that he didn’t fully understand Ginny and what she was going through, and that he couldn't have been able to meet her needs in the same way Harry could. (I do think this would take a while, though - on the way out, Dean would be understandably very bitter, even if bitterness would be quickly surpassed by the much more serious escalation in circumstances in the war for an apparent Muggleborn. Thinking about it, Dean Thomas had a terrible 1996. Man got dumped and then within three months was homeless and on the run from a murderous fascist regime trying to do him in. Like, I know this is very much not funny but… if a man I had shared a bedroom with for six years and called a friend publicly scooped my ex from me from under my nose, dumped her a few weeks later for mysterious reasons, and then I had to look at his face everywhere I looked on wanted posters, I would be a lot more mad at Harry Potter than Dean Thomas ends up being).
Ultimately, though, I think both would look back on the relationship as a sort of sweet teenage thing, with a lot of warmth and humour to it, probably some sweet confidence-boosting intimacy early on, and a bit of a lesson that you can't make someone be the right person for you. I like to think Ginny and Dean end up mates, in the end, and that she's always rooting for him to find someone great.

“Why don’t we get out of here?”
Daphne’s eyes widened for the smallest second, before a mask of collection and calmness returned to her face. “I would like that.”
Ron barely waited for her answer as he grasped her hand. Together the two ushered themselves around the grooving bodies of their schoolmates. He knew somewhere, somehow, someone was watching the silvery duo make their swift escape from the snowy hall.
But he didn’t care.
The ringing voices of students, hymns from the Weird Sisters and reprimanding shouts from professors died as Ron led Daphne out of the great hall.
A simple utter of the charm and the proper swirling of his wand, saw Ron bewitch both himself and Daphne, the two shimmering with the textures and images of the walls behind them. Like that of a chameleon.
“Ron, what are we doing?”
Ron quieted Daphne’s harsh whisper, “just trust me and stay quiet.”
Ron could barely make out her head nodding before he led her up the steps and out of the entrance hall. The occasional student lingered. Some students were crying from a ruined date or the occasional boy or girl wistfully nostalgic of the night they had.
With his hand in hers, Ron led her up the moving staircase. Some of the portraits seemed to recognize the presence of students as the occasional comment was thrown their way.
“No funny business”
“Snakes in the corridor”
“Gonna have some fun I see”
The two fourth years ignored them all as Ron took step after step, his attention focused solely at the task at hand.
“Ron, where are we going?” Daphne’s question registered itself in Ron’s ears. Was her voice always so soft?
“I found this place in the castle. A secret room if you will. I really want you to see it.”
He offered out, hoping that the complete confidence in his voice would be enough to deter the heiress from asking anymore questions.
It was not.
“Remember the last time you found a ‘secret room’ Ron?”
Of course she would bring that up. Ron rolled his eyes as they continued their ascent. It was one time! And I was only a first year, could you really blame me? “I have not the faintest recollection of the event in which you speak of my lady.” Ron uttered. The tiniest of smirks gracing his face. Though he knew she couldn’t see it, he held no doubt she knew what face he would be making at that moment.
“Oh really?”
“Really really.”
The fifth floor, great, we’re almost there.
“You have not the faintest recollection of a certain piece of moldy roast being consumed by a certain redhead? At… what was it called again? A death day party?”
Ron shivered as the two finally made it to the Seventh floor corridor. Escorting her forward to their destination, he couldn’t help but feel the slightest bit nauseated at the memory. Professor Snape nearly decapitated me with his eyes for all the upchucking I did near the old potions room.
“Yeah… not a single recollection at all.”
Ron’s response extracted a laugh out of the Greengrass girl he had grown so fondly of. It only took another second or so before he found it.
“Finally!”
He took a swift glance of the surrounding hall before finally releasing the disillusionment charm he had casted. One look at Daphne and his breath caught itself locked up in his throat. Despite the confused glare she maintained, as she eyed Barnabas the Barmy, Ron couldn’t help but become enraptured in the sight before him. Again.
He had to hand it to her. No amount of slytherin tutelage would have been able to make him a fashion icon. But a single Hogsmeade outing with Daphne sure did fix that.
Her golden hair was held up in a ponytail, with only the most beautiful strands of her hair making up her curtain bangs. The emerald hairpiece at the base of her ponytail glimmered under any and all light. The silver sheath dress she had was decorated with a layer of a pale green sheer, enchanted to shimmer like the stars in the sky. And the shimmering shawl of hers that looked like mist itself was just beautiful in his eyes. The way her hands held unto her waist, her mouth turned up in annoyed curiosity and the furrowing of her eyebrows. Everything just seemed to fit perfectly for her. It was all just so beautiful.
All the while, his own ensemble did nothing but compliment her own. He didn’t know whether that was intentional or not on her part, but surely didn’t care. The silver pea coat felt like a second skin, forcibly accentuating the sleek figure he never knew he had. The pale green lining of the coat gave off the same visual as her dress. The slacks and robes he wore were worth more than almost all of his belongings in Hogwarts combined. And while her shawl shimmered, his dress robe that fit loosely over his outfit did not, giving the stark contrast of the duo an almost wily visual.
It was all too much, but Daphne’s insistence on the matter and her numerous threats were enough to make Ron back down. And he was glad that he had.
“Think of a place. Any place in the world you want to go. Maybe a place you want to show me one day.”
Daphne’s eyes sang with confusion and the tiniest bit of contempt. Ron figured that she probably thought of this as another prank he had installed for her. He kept his honest and positive demeanor despite the young witch’s slight sourness.
“Why would—”
“Please Daph, trust me okay.”
The puppy eyes he had been practicing on her for the past four years, bloomed in its full glory. Hands clenched softly under his face and a hauntingly adorable smile graced Ron’s jaw as he peered down at the shorter girl.
Pursing her lips and with a single eyebrow raise, Daphne muttered her response.
“Fine.”
Closing her eyes, Ron watched as she stood there for a solid thirty seconds before finally opening her eyes, gazing up at him questionably.
“Did you think of a place?”
“Yes.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes Ron.”
“Well that was a little fast, are you s—”
“Yes Ronald!”
Ron flinched only slightly at Daphne’s raised voice. She’s getting impatient, might as well get the show on the road.
“Okay now step two, move—”
“I thought you said we were going to a secret room?”
“We are, but two things need to happen.”
“What kind of room demands such irrelevant tasks to be done?”
“This room.”
“Ron, what—”
“Now all you gotta do is pace back and forth three times—”
“What!?”
“Trust me Daph, just pace—”
“I’m not a circus animal Ron.”
“I never said that y—”
“Why are we really here Ron?”
“Do you want to see the room or—”
“Of course I do, but I will not let you subject me to another one of your pranks or training exercises in order to get inside.”
“This is nowhere near related to training—”
“You literally told me to practice breathing last week Ron.”
“And pacing three times is not comparable to inhaling and exhaling—”
“You literally told me to ‘think about my actions’ the last time I lost to you in a duel before you put me in timeout.”
“There was no timeout, it was literally Theo’s turn—”
“What kind of door demands we do these tedious tasks just to—”
“This one!”
“Don’t interrupt me—”
“You’ve been interrupting me—”
“Wow real mature Ronald—”
“Greengrass. Pace back and forth three times in front of the bloody painting now.”
Ron froze. He couldn’t believe how firm he sounded. And by the looks of it, neither did Daphne. Her once annoyed mask was replaced with a few seconds of shock, before narrowing down into a minuscule scowl, and something else… a fire in her eyes that he couldn’t quite describe.
“Fine… Weasley.” The heiress growled out, now exceptionally annoyed at Ron addressing her with her family name. Something he hadn’t done since first year. Ron could only stand there, sweat drowning the back of his neck as he tried to keep his firm posture.
Her scowl remained latched onto Ron’s rigid stare. Her narrowed eyes watched him the entire time as she paced back and forth. Luckily the sound of magically appearing doors broke the staring contest. Ron breathed a sigh of immense relief at Daphne’s glare no longer being held on her face. Instead, one of pure shock took place, and Ron couldn’t help but giggle out at her frozen figure.
“What… Ron… What is…”
She turned to him, eyes pleading for an answer to this mystery.
Now or never. Be the competition, be bold.
Taking a hold of one of her hands before she could react, he led her to the doors, opposite to that of the absurd tapestry,
“Daphne, I present to you, the come and go room.”
And when he opened the great wooden doors, Daphne released a gasp and Ron couldn’t help but do the same.
We’ve been here before.
Ron couldn’t figure out whether it was Daphne or the room that enjoyed playing mind games. The eerily empty room looked almost identical to that very same room back in first year. The disused classroom. The Room with the mirror.
Moonlight seemed to glare through the false arch way windows. A thin layer of dust glazed itself over the floor and walls. And at the very end of the room, the accursed mirror stood proud and tall.
Ron could not do anything but remain stuck. His mind wandered high and far at Daphne’s choice of a room. The only thing keeping him grounded was Daphne herself. The hold he held on her hand seemed like a heavy anchor to reality, a foundation so firm and unshakeable. And yet, he still shook at the mere thought of being here again.
“Daphne… why are… why here?”
He didn’t even hear his own voice, but the question was still uttered, and Ron now felt nervous at the thought of her answer.
A gentle caress of his cheek brought his face away from the mirror and to the Greengrass heiress. Her eyes gazing deeply into Ron’s. Ron put his free hand to her hand at his cheek, looking below at her with a conflicting level of emotions clouding his eyes.
“I don’t know how you do these things Ron. But can you give me a second to explain?”
The soft melody of her voice felt like honey, but even the sweetness of her words seemed to weigh down on his soul. The last time I was here, that mirror nearly broke my damn heart.
He nodded, his eyes now completely on her as she began, “The last time we were here, we both saw things that hurt us. It’s been three years Ron. I was always curious about whether or not…”
Ron held her gaze, pleading silently for her to continue.
“I wondered about whether or not I got what I wanted.”
Ron hummed his understanding. Still rendered slightly immobile at the turn of events, he took a few moments to himself to steady himself.
She’s right. Maybe I finally got the love I wanted from my family. All of it. The love, the attention, the doting, the care, the acceptance. All of it. And I just never realized it.
“Ron”
Daphne’s call, so soft. So sweet. It pulled him from his thoughts, sobering him up from the drunkenness of melancholy that nearly swallowed him.
“I’m sorry I ruined a probably beautiful plan Ron. Would you like for us to leave?”
Ron was quick in his denial at her words. He shook his head quickly. Maybe a bit too quick for her liking, but he didn’t care. Daphne never led me astray before. She’s right, maybe I need to see this for myself as well.
“I wanna do this.”
Concern washed over her face, one of her hands still holding one of his, while the other held his cheek. Drawing calming circles with her thumb with both.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Somehow, the duo made their way towards the mirror. And before Ron could get the chance, Daphne put a placating hand on his arm, “May I go first please?”
The fourth year boy simply nodded, a smile finding its way into Daphne’s face as she took a steadying breath. She then faced a copy of the Mirror of Erised in all its glory.
Ron watched fiercely at the expressions that dawned Daphne’s face, ready to remove her from a possibly horrible sight.
But he was relieved to see Daphne do nothing but allow her once timid smile, expand into that of a child. The smile being one of genuine happiness. So filled with love, hope and wonder.
“I guess my parents really do love me.”
Ron nodded at her words, too busy enjoying her safe and cherishing reaction to the mirror’s reflection.
Eventually, a small chuckle escaped her before Daphne stepped away. She put a comforting look his way and rubbed his back.
“You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to, Ron.”
Ron smiled as well, touched at her concern before catching her eye.
“Thank you Daphne.”
Curiosity and dread held his throat while wonder and concern caressed his soul.
What would I see this time? The last time was horrible. I longed for love and acceptance. Did I finally get it?
Stepping into view of the mirror, relief hit Ron like a bludger. He didn’t see his family. They weren’t hugging him, doting on him, gazing at him with all the love the world had to offer. And for a split second, he felt divine in that moment. I can now say that I had everything I ever wanted, right?
But no. This wasn’t the case. Because soon enough, the image of a certain blonde heiress made its way over to Ron. ‘Daphne’ held that sweet smile she always had, ‘her’ eyes gazing into his own with all the love in the world, she stopped before a simple peck to the cheek was given to him. He watched with a furious blush at the reflection before him. ‘Daphne’ didn’t seem to mind, for she was too busy letting her head lean itself on his shoulder as she then mouthed the words he could die happy hearing.
‘I love you’
“Ron”
His reverie shattered at Daphne’s call. He turned to her, the girl’s eyes widened with concern but subtle relief at the lack of tears leaving his eyes like the last time.
“Yes Daph?”
“Are you okay?”
Turning back to the mirror, Ron could only blush further at ‘Daphne’s’ arms wrapping itself around his back, barely registering her mouth moving once again.
‘Now or never. Be the competition. Be bold’
The same words Tracey told him when Ron confessed to her his feelings for Daphne. In typical Tracey fashion, his close friend seemed to know the right way to motivate Ron. And with her words in mind, Ron moved forward with his plans dauntlessly .
Be bold.
Ron returned to Earth at the epiphany that occurred. He had worked this hard, he fought this uphill battle for so long. He wasn’t going to let the opportunity fall from his grasps.
With all the leftover traces of gryffindor courage in him, Ron rounded on Daphne, who seemed a bit startled at his suddenness. Her amber eyes gazing deeply into his blue orbs. His breath hitched as he once again seemed immobile for the smallest of seconds before going forward.
Be Bold.
“Do you trust me Daphne?”
Ron took hold of her hands with his own. Holding their joined hands between them. He kept his eyes up at her face as she glanced down at the hands between them. He began to rub circles on her hands. Rubbing in the same fashion she did just moments before. Catching his glimpse once more, Daphne nodded.
“I trust you Ron.”
His heart began to drum in his ear. Here goes nothing.
“Close your eyes for me please.”
She did as she was told, the faintest hint of her own blush slowly forming.
Be Bold.
Not giving himself the chance to back out, Ron slowly leaned down, his eyes closing on the descent. And in the softest and most gentle way, he placed his lips upon hers.
He did not miss the way she inhaled so sharply at the act. He did however, miss the way her eyes flew open. Her eyes caught sight of his face, trembling slightly, but fixed in the actions it was committing. The circles he was rubbing into her hands seemed to slow and tremble as well, almost as if indicating the mere anxiety that raced through Ron’s brain as he kissed her. As he kissed Daphne.
Ron didn’t know how much time passed, even if there was a watch, a clock or even a spell to indicate such a thing. Doubt sneakily crept into his soul as her reaction—or lack thereof—began to garner his attention. But that lasted for mere moments as he felt the witch moving to hold his face in place, feeling her press forward into the kiss as well.
The young duo shared their first kiss. The moonlight as the only witness to their tryst. The moment seemed to last both forever and never as the two broke away. Ron’s eyes opened, to see a flushed Daphne, a hand of hers moving to cover her lips, while the other held itself close to her stomach.
Her eyes seemed to be floating, giving itself no intention to catch Ron’s eyes.
“Daphne… I—“
“Why did you do that?”
Her whisper, sending shivers of worry and dread down his spine.
Oh Merlin, she hates me! I buggered it all up! I’m such an arse!
“I-I… I didn’t—“
“Did you want to do that?”
Again, her question seemed to only solidify Ron’s fear, but he still answered truthfully.
“Yes.”
Silence. For the longest ten seconds of Ron’s life, it was naught but complete silence. And then it wasn’t.
“What did you see in the mirror Ron?”
That’s it! She bloody well figured it out didn’t she!? Why are all bloody women mind readers!!!
“You.”
Daphne hummed in response. Her eyes were still dancing around and her mouth was still covered with one of her hands.
Ron couldn’t help but fidget under the pressure of the situation. I blew it, he thought. Damn it! I fucked it all up? Me and my stupid wishes, why the bloody hell did it have to show me Daphne!? WHY!?—
Warm lips interrupted his thoughts as Daphne pecked his lips. His eyes grew bigger than the giant squid. And absolutely lost in the moment as Ron’s cheeks burned pink. He was sure his cheeks were now permanently scarred with this new pink hue. His mind raced faster than a firebolt, as he tried to comprehend what happened in the past few moments in time.
“Ron..”
His eyes refocused on Daphne, her own eyes slightly misty and a dreamy smile on her lips.
Shite! I made her cry!
“You’re spiraling.” Her words seemed to freeze his mind. Steadying his breaths, Ron could only gape. Opening and closing his mouth multiple times, struggling to find the words.
“I.. don’t know… I can’t find the words to tell you how I’m feeling Daph.”
He winced at his own words, embarrassment slowly flooding its way into his system. He would have allowed it if Daphne hadn’t stopped him.
“Do you feel like kissing me again.”
Her hopeful smile, yet narrowed eyes was a sight to behold. Ron’s blush and flustered posture resulted in him barely gargling out a nod of confirmation.
“Then what are you waiting for Weasley?”
“Uh… n-nothing… Greengrass.”
Ron could almost squeal in victory as his emotions flipped itself on its head.
Rushing forward, Ron wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her ever so softly towards himself once more before grasping her lips with his own.
Another kiss. Success!

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 💗
@risingsoleil WHY AM I ONLY SEEING THIS NOW 😭😭😭😭😭 Mahalo nui loa titah 🫶🏽🩵 and apologies for the long wait, for some reason I don’t get notifications about submissions from tumblr mobile.
Okie dokie, so I write for some K-pop groups I listen to, Asoiaf and Harry Potter. And going down the line from 1 to 5 my favorite fics I have written include:
1. Son || “Her family was shattered. And it was all her fault. She did it. She lost her baby boy. Her little Ronnie… her son was dead. Molly could only scream louder as that truth nestled into her soul.” ||
My baby, my jewel, my favor, my child. This fic was a result of my rabbit hole dive into Ronald Weasley fics that did his character justice cause wtf was that movie portrayal. They did Rupert dirty. So with this one, I built my own Slytherin Ron au (yes this was inspired by the icon themselves “Fate” by TheTrueSpartan) and the oneshot details a brief overview of moments in Ron’s life shared by Molly Weasley after she is led to believe that her son is dead. Son is part 1 of my Hiraeth series that details moments and other background notes following Ron’s sorting into Slytherin. Molly’s perspective for me was a critical aspect because I don’t think there anyone better that could convey the range of emotions one could feel without it ever being said/described. I mainly wanted readers to have a quick dive into Molly’s perspective to the whole dilemma and show a bit of how unconditional love may not be enough to sustain a relationship, I guess. But yes, by far my most cherished work to date.
2. Intruder || “His soul alone would have never forgiven himself if he didn’t exact the justice he deemed fit upon those that threatened or harmed what was his. And this home—the other members, Jongho—all of it was his.” ||
Ahhhhh! Thank you so much to a person going by the alias Inoxy on Ao3 for the motivation to do this one. Intruder was a sequel to my brief little oneshot called Alone, where Hongjoong realizes someone broke into their dorm where Jongho is alone and sick. Intruder follows up immediately with Jongho’s pov before jumping to Hongjoong’s and seeing how he reacts to what is left. This one was so difficult not in the sense that angst is hard to put from mind to paper, but rather I struggled to write certain actions scenes and instead opted to go another route. As the first work to be written out of complete motivation from such a kind and thoughtful reader, Intruder remains one of my babies forever and always.
3. Leave || “All of it was culminating, Donghyuck knew that for sure. Bound to rupture and ensnare both his heart and theirs. And Donghyuck was terrified of which way the coin was going to land.” ||
EEEEEEEE!! Where do I start with this one? Well, Leave follows the journey of Donghyuck who finds himself a portal between his world and the second dimension and let’s just say, it isn’t always bright where the sun shines. His members’ doppelgängers are not so okay on letting him go and things might just take a turn for the worst. I got this idea from a typical genre where I love watching my biases suffer and watching the world be served justice prior to the happy ending they deserve. And it was the first nct fic I ever wrote and loved the semi-open ending.
4. Verdict || “Daphne promised him something in those short and bitter moments before he was led away like some damn game waiting to be slaughtered. Promised she wouldn’t rage over him. Promised she wouldn’t exact some form of petty revenge on Dawlish, or Head Auror Robards or even that blasted excuse of a minister, Kingsley Shacklebolt for not stepping in sooner. Of course she didn’t keep that damned promise.” ||
Part six of my Hiraeth series, (my Slytherin Ron au) Verdict was a tough one for me because it was the first time I was writing for… essentially one of the npc’s of a major franchise. I wanted to find a set balance between a true canon character and a OC who’s life is forever changed because of my au. And I think achieved that with Daphne’s pov in this one as she awaits Ron’s verdict. It was also really fun to create the scene where Molly finally sees Ron again after believing him to be dead in this au and for that, Verdict holds a special place in my heart.
5. Sing || “Taeyong hated the mere thought of death having their way with his son. It was a cruel twist of fate on both ends.” ||
And finally Sing. This oneshot was originally a Deckerstar fic that I rewrote and revamped to be a nct vampire au. I enjoy a quick sucker punch of angst every now and again so I made this au where Taeyong has to say goodbye to his childe/son and his only spawn Haechannie :)) the original long au followed the basis of Taeyong being too dependent and passive of the things he has in his very long life and how all of that comes to an end after another magical being takes revenge on Taeyong through Hyuck. And yuppers, that was that.
Thank you for attending my Ted talk yall and lemme just say, this was so fun. I’m going to tag my next five, please don’t feel pressured at all and I hope y’all have a beautiful rest of you day 🩵

❝You have a bloody strange way of showing it, then.❞ Hermione huffs. Of course he'd be worried about Harry. Both sorted into Slytherin, but it seemed that didn't matter. Voldemort couldn't live whilst Harry could, which made it ten times worse. And then, to add to matters, Death Eaters were hunting down Muggleborns, which made her question where she stood. Was she going to targeted next? She didn't know. Didn't want to know.
Exhaling a sigh, Hermione fixed the Hufflepuff with a look, ❝Look, we're not going to make much headway if I'm the one doing all the thinking.❞ She said, her look turning into a glare, ❝Harry is our friend—our best friend, actually—and he's going to need all the help he can possibly get if things go as south as I think they might.❞

Until the Last Drop
Part 3
Severus' lessons have ended and gone, surprisingly smoothly through the first week. That is, aside from the one time Neville Longbottom's shrinking solution went terribly wrong. Though Hermione Granger saved him and his toad before he could kill it.. The Potions Master was quite disappointed he couldn't finish off Neville's toad for brewing such a horrendous, god-awful potion. To say it even 𝘪𝘴 a potion was an utter insult to potioneers. Snape didn't feel marvelous about having to teach the son of his former bully, but he had to do it nonetheless.
He was just as insufferable, arrogant, ignorant and selfish as his father. He spent most of his days grading terrible excuses of assignments. Though it would always make his bottom lip curl when he came across assignments with the name 𝘠/𝘕 𝘓/𝘕 in the right upper corner. Her assignments were always tip-top quality, with an eloquent handwriting and the most intricate, trivial of details being put to use, always using elegant and advanced words that over half of the students in her year wouldn't have a clue what they mean.
⊱ ────── {.⋅ ♫ ⋅.} ───── ⊰
Y/N was strolling around the castle, her black, long robes and cloak swooping behind her like flowing clouds of smoke. Her eyes were unforgiving, sharp and observing. It wouldn't be rare for Neville Longbottom's knees to buckle, and teeth to clatter at the mere sight of her. Could you blame the boy? Her aura of authority, intelligence and power were quite intimidating. And deceiving.
Y/N stopped walking abruptly and tilted her chin to normal height, closing her eyes and smiling creepily as she spotted Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley talking. "She's mental, I'm telling you!", Ron exclaimed with wide eyes, and Harry nodded in agreement, or that's what it was supposed to be. Ron clumsily tripped over Harry's foot and fell over, groaning.
Harry laughed and bent over to help Ron, when Y/N approached them. "Would any help do you good, boys?", she inquired silkily.
Ronald stood up with a grunt and fixed his red hair, he bared his teeth. " What're you playing at?", he asked in disbelief, unsure of Y/Ns actions. The girl towered over Ronald and just laughed lightly. Creepy, really. "I beg your pardon? I am merely trying to be polite, yes." "Then what's with the fancy words?", Harry stepped in and raised a brow.
Y/N sighed while rolling her eyes and spun around on her heel, muttering under her breath and shaking her head as she strode opposite their direction. "Dunces.."
Ron was about to lunge at her when Harry restrained him by the arms.
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───
From that day on, Ron had developed a great distaste for the Slytherin first-year. The trio was in the courtyard, on a bench and talking. Ron and Harry were rambling about Slytherins, and Hermione decided to join in. As silly as she knew it was, it was quite exciting to join in in the latter. "She's mad! Like all Slytherins, of course. You seen how she talks? And how she smiles, like a madman? Bloody girl's a menace!", Ron complained and huffed. "You know, 𝘪 heard she never gets along with anyone, not even Draco. Many people say that because her mother is an auror, she's gone insane or something." Hermione chirped, accentuating the i.
A stranger in a leather coat and a pointy hat, who had a 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘺 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘵 paper in their hands and glued to their face, shuffled and spoke up. "And i heard she's absolutely crazy, and that her mum once went to Azkaban." the anonymous person chimed. Hermione leaned over to see their face but failed, and raised a bushy eyebrow. "How do you know?"
"Because I'm her.", the stranger pulled the newspaper away from their face and revealed an iconic scowl, and knit eyebrows. Y/N.She stood up and strode away in a swift motion, while Hermione and Ron's jaws were on the floor. "How.. She, what?!" Ron screeched and Harry shrugged with his shoulders.
❀•°•═════ஓ๑♡๑ஓ═════•°•❀
After another such.. Strange incident, Ron decided to never initate a conversation about Y/N, anywhere aside from the Gryffindor common room and dorms. He'd learned the hard way, yes...
Though Y/N didn't seem too phased. She kept calm, and didn't hesitate from talking to the trio whenever she pleased, offering them help or advice, mostly. She wouldn't have much to talk about with a pair of dunces and a know-it-all, did she? Although she wasn't immature, gossip wasn't a reason to stop initiating conversation with someone. She found it childish, whoever found such a reason to be valid.
Professor Binns was giving yet another god-forsaken, discombobulatingly boring lesson on the History of Magic, not even Y/N seemed to want to pay attention much. But, she bothered taking notes of what Professor Binns said in his monotone, depressingly slow, coma-inducing voice.
Y/N sighed desperately as she rolled her wrists and bent her fingers, putting them through unnecessary torture by copying down a long text of nothing useful Professor Binns had said about the history of Hogwarts. She would chew and bite on her cheeks solely out of boredom. Neville was the only eager one to hear to the professor, smiling and writing down every single word the ghost said. Honestly, even Peeves the poltergeist seemed like a better teacher. Ron had fallen fast asleep, and Harry's eyelids were drooping.
Hermione was trying to wake them up with desperacy, nudging their ribcage with their elbows. "Come on you two, wake up!", She whispered with knit eyebrows and sighed. Y/N couldn't help but smirk at this. Deciding to take matters into her own hands, she flicked the two boys' foreheads sharply, and they woke up with a groan. "Wakey wakey, you two. We're in class if you didn't forget." Y/N whispered with sassiness and Ronald rubbed his forehead and his eyes.
"Not our fault Binns is so awfully boring.. Makes me drowsy.", he protested and Y/N hummed. " Can't disagree with you on that one, Weasley. You have good reason.."
Hermione smiled weakly and Y/N gave her a wink of reassurance, which was unusual for her. 'She's not so awful', the two of them thought.
