In this year’s Senate elections, Democrats won over 2 million more votes than Republicans but still lost their majority. So much for democracy.  The Senate is famously biased toward the GOP, and with less ticket-splitting these days, that leaves Democrats with quite the hole to climb out of. But there is a ladder back to the majority, even if it’s a tall one. Democrats have performed well in the past two midterm elections, riding a blue wave to a net gain of 40 House seats in 2018 and flipping one Senate seat in 2022, a midterm they were expected to lose decisively. In 2018, Democrats lost four Senate seats while gaining two, but all the losses were in red states, like North Dakota (!) and Indiana (!!). In 2024, though, they saw their 51-seat majority slashed to 47 as the GOP claimed the chamber. But the 2026 midterms alone almost certainly won’t put them back in the Senate majority. There are only two good shots at pickups that year: Maine and North Carolina. 

[...] Nevertheless, holding all their seats and flipping four across these two elections would put Democrats back into the majority. But flip the White House in 2028 and they need only three.

The Democrats lost 4 seats this election (and frankly lucky to not lose any more) to put them down to 47 seats (including 2 Dem-caucusing I’s), and the effort to win back the Senate will likely be a two-cycle effort.

Happy Halloween :))

In celebration of Halloween, here’s what I think everyone’s costumes would be :)

• Lincoln wouldn’t wear one - there is nothing that could ever make him

• Amelia would probably dress up as a racing driver - helmet and everything

• Thom and Peter would be wearing a couples costume - all I’m saying is that Barbie and Ken are a strong option here

• Lon would probably forget until Rachel reminded him so he’d have to throw something together last minute. He’d probably throw a mask on or put some fake blood on his face

• Mel would coordinate with his girlfriend - I can see him being a Harry Potter character

• Ron always matches what his kids want to be. They want to be witches? He’ll be a wizard with them (he is such a family man <3)

They are the best friend group ever and I love them <3

RIP to two figures of fantasy TV

News came out a few days ago that Thom Christopher has passed away. Although a well-respected and Emmy-winning actor well known for his work in soap operas, to me he'll always be Hawk, who was Spock to Gil Gerard's Kirk in the vastly-underrated second season of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century:

In preparing this post I also found out that Ron Ely, who played Tarzan in the 1960s TV series (and was the last of an uninterrupted line of actors who had played the character since 1918), and later became the first and to date only actor to play a live-action version of the pulp hero Doc Savage, passed away in October. I hadn't heard about how tough his life was in recent years (the brief version: his wife was murdered and when police arrived his son told police he had a gun and they shot him dead. Very sad.)

RIP to both.
