Book Review
Title:Â Romance Rules for Werewolves Author: Linsey Hall
Series: Charming Cove, book #3
No. of Pages:Â 314
ISBN:Â 9781648820359
Synopsis:
Autumn is a time of snuggly sweaters, crisp breezes, andâŠ. sexy, broody werewolves?
When I inherit a magical house in the beautiful seaside village of Charming Cove, itâs just what I need to turn my dismal life around. Fresh off a bad breakup and with magic that Iâve ignored for a decade, Iâm ready to rekindle my inner witch.
The catch? The house is inhabitable until I renovate it, and the only place to live is with a brooding, rugged boat-builder who definitely doesnât want me in his space. Though thereâs no denying the electric spark between us, neither of us is willing to act on it.
To make things more complicated, I have to renovate the house in thirty days or Iâll lose it. But the house hates anyone who enters it and attacks with loose floorboards and horrific odors. I canât get a single contractor in Charming Cove to help me out.
That leaves only one optionâconvince my new roommate to help me until I can untangle the mystery of why my new home is so moody. Itâll mean spending every day with the sexy, infuriating werewolf, but Iâll do whatever it takes to make my dreams a reality.
Romance Rules for Werewolves is a fun, frothy romantic comedy full of laughter, love, and magical hijinks. Itâs the third in a series of stand alone romances set in the seaside village of Charming Cove and the books do not need to be read in order.

What did I think of the book?
Romance Rules for Werewolves by Linsey Hall My rating: âââ 3 of 5 stars I saw the title and had a good laugh wondering what in the world is this about with a massive grin on my face. This was a hilarious find. The cover is beautiful, and the title⊠well, as a lover of werewolf books, I started to not even care if the story was good or not, I just wanted this thing on my shelf to make me smile any time I saw it. I was pleasantly surprised that the book was actually fun to read. The beginning few chapters felt pretty rushed in getting the MC from her mess of a life to suddenly being in Charming Cove, and the same can be said for the ending. But this story is definitely a "pick it up when you've had a bad day" because just as the cover made me laugh so did the story. It's silly, and romantic, and Poa, the cat familiar is chefs kiss. The shenanigans with Lavender House was also a whole lot of fun to read, a house with a personality is truly something else. The only major issues I had with the book were the occasional typos, slightly off pacing, and constantly feeling that there was just something missing from the story, but I can't put my finger on what exactly. Still, I enjoyed it. Favorite character/s: Poa, the cat familiar. I love her sass, and personality. She gave me many laughs. Rafe - pretty interesting concept behind his character, but I really wish there had been more chapters from his perspective, especially the emotions behind living with the curse on him. (Maybe that's what was missing from the storyâŠ? Hard to say). The coven girls, it's always wonderful to see groups of girls coming together to help each other out in witchy stories. I loved those scenes. What drew me to this book? The title and cover. It still makes me laugh every time I look at it. Stars: 3/5 stars, it's a charming little summer read, just with a few hiccups. I'll be happy to visit this one again in the warmer months. View all my reviews

Chapter 12: The Rules of Drunken Combat
Outside. 9:15 pm.
The argument had not gone unnoticed.
Deathdealers swarmed the entrance of St. Matthias church like so many flies on a golden altar, backs leaning, legs crouching, watching him from the corner of their eyes. They were blocking his way. Scowling, Lucian stepped from the church's fold, letting the moon do its work, observing with some satisfaction as half the vampires departed, the first cohort slipping away into the shadows without a second glance.

An Idea of a F!Human working at a ranch((farm?? Idk what you call it)) but a big farm((??)) Like place with lots of acres, and a barn, and all the classic farm stuff.
And she also works with Minotaurs, and centaurs and other sturdy creatures that hang around farms.
But in this world humans are a little bit... Not trusted?? I don't know the word. But they're not trusted because they're known to be cruel to any intelligent life that isn't human, so the Minotaurs, Centaurs, werewolves and all these other creatures are very wary of her only to find out she is a sweetheart.
I'm sorry if this is a bit jumbled, I'm not a good writer but I thought you'd might like the idea đ
PS. She works with the animals, since all the big sexy beasts do all the heavy lifting and crap âșïžâșïž
PS 2. If you do go on with this.. maybe could you like.. hint at a minotaur romance if that's okay?? You don't have too though.
a monster-fuckers guide to ranching.
Most monsters have possessive/ territorial tendencies, it's best to keep males of the same species apart so there's no fighting. While some monsters are territorial they can form bonds or symbiotic relationships with other creatures. For example: harpies and dragons tend to get along, if the two are close the dragon might even let the harpy eat meat from between their teeth. And of course, almost all monster species can form bonds with humans or at least, tolerate human handlers in their space.
The main exception to this rule of thumb is Centaurs. Centaurs travel in big heard usually with 2-5 stallions, and while they handle others of their own species well they are particularly hostile to outside monsters encroaching on their territory.
Werewolves travel in packs and while they are still territorial, they are considered one of the more "friendly" species of monster, which may sound laughable to anyone who's had a werewolf take a snap at them, but as always It's important to remember not to judge monsters by human standards.
-------------
It's rare to find such a wide variety of monsters, the ranch spans hundreds of Aceres to accommodate them all and has countless workers to make sure all of their needs are met.
All of the monsters are a little cool and skittish around you at first as one of the senior workers introduced you to all of the inhabitants. slowly but surely they get used to your scent and they slowly warm up to you.
Most people treat the work like... well, work, but you seem to have a real passion for taking care of the monsters. You learn each of the monsters' names and the little quirks of their individual personalities, they've never had a handler as sweet as you. You quickly become a favorite of most of the monsters at the ranch.
Usually, it's nice being so popular, then heat season comes and multiple monsters are yowling for you to come and help them and suddenly it's a little more stressful.

Hiii đ«¶đŒ I hope you're still up for doing an Elijah request! đ€ I can't get this man out of my head haha
Soo it would be an idea where they met somewhere in Mystic Falls and immediately felt some bond between them, so it happens that they start falling in love (she's human but knows about vampires) but she's too afraid to get hurt so she also tries not to get too close to Elijah. One night he sees some stranger following her home from the Grill and even starts attacking her, Elijah is immediately there saving her and taking her home with him to treat her wounds (mostly some scratches) and he's just super worried. There she realizes that Elijah would never be the one hurting her and they finally share their feelings with a lot of kissing and cuddles afterwards and he holds her, telling how much she means to him.
Oh I hope this is not too weird at all đâ€ïž
Description: Upon meeting Elijah Mikaelson, the feelings start to come but in fear of being hurt, the reader decides to keep her walls up to protect herself. This changes after Elijah protects her after being attacked.
Warnings: fluff, small angst, physical assault (mild), she/her pronouns, maybe swearing?
*Requests are open, please send through as many requests as you want, check my character list and requesting rules.*
Thanks so much for making this request! I can never get sick of Elijah, this man is always on my mind and please feel free to request again if you wish :) I really enjoyed writing this, thank you again :D

First Person's POV
Tonight at the Grill was a âlive acousticsâ night, some of the performers were good and others were quite frankly not that great. Bonnie, Elena and Caroline were off on the next big adventure for the vampiric save-the-day business and while I knew about all the vampires, witches, werewolves and all that extra fun stuff. Besides Matt, I was the only human in the group and somehow I was pushed aside to be kept âsafe; despite Matt always being dragged into the whirlpool of drama even if he didnât want to be.Â
âThe music is wonderful for the atmosphere tonight, donât you agree?â That voice would haunt my dreams, haunt my every thought, I couldnât fathom how gentle and warm a voice could sound. I glanced to the side, shooting a polite smile to the impeccably dressed man and nodded in agreement.Â
âI do agree, I feel like Iâm in like a cute little romance story, the warm lighting and the music-â I cut myself short, realising I was babbling to a random stranger who more than likely did not care for my ideas and thoughts.Â
âI can see how you would see that.â Oh, gosh- those eyes! That smile! This man would haunt me forever, picture perfect and everything I would want in a man. I continued to share a polite smile with the man, fiddling with the straw in my chocolate milkshake and turned myself slightly to face the man a little better.Â
âItâs a pleasure to meet youâŠ?â Realising that he was waiting for my name, I placed my drink down and took his hand.Â
âY/N L/Nâ He softly cupped my hand, shaking it and proceeded to share his name.
âElijah Mikaelson.â I wish I couldâve hidden my reaction better, my eyes went wide, and my smile flattened for a moment before I quickly made sure to continue to be nice and polite. Elijah carefully rested my head on the bar, took a small sip of whatever his drink was and gazed at me with a quizzical look.Â
âYou know who I amâŠâ His tone was neither harsh nor hurt, Elijah seemed to have suspected my knowledge of his name and he even seemed curious by the idea of my knowledge.Â
âI know of your brother Niklaus⊠Elena told me about you, I think she might have exaggerated a bit. You donât seem like the antagonist she kinda painted you out to be. From what Iâve heard, youâre the nicer brother⊠the noble one and I'm sure first glances can be deceiving but⊠I donât know- you donât seem like a bad man.â  He briefly licked his lips, eyes shooting up to the ceiling and seemed to be contemplating his next moves.Â
âI suppose you know-âÂ
âThat youâre aâŠâ I leaned closer to whisper so people passing by wouldnât hear.Â
âAn Original.âÂ
âYou donât seem to be phased.â
âTeam doppelgĂ€nger has built up my immunity to supernatural beings.â I let out a weak chuckle, cringing internally and turned my focus back on my drink. I wanted to keep speaking with him, I really did want to keep speaking with him but I knew the world that I happened to live in and I didnât fancy the idea of being bait or hurt as collateral damage.Â
âIt was really nice to meet you Elijah but I have to go.â He nodded, that handsome smile appearing once more, his actions made me gush and brought butterflies into my belly as he grabbed my jacket and assisted in placing it back on.Â
âI hope that you have a good evening, Y/NâÂ
âSame to you Elijah.â He seemed to have a thought pop into his head, I stopped in my tracks, allowing for him to have the benefit of the doubt and give him the chance to speak his mind.Â
âMay I have the pleasure of seeing you again?âÂ
âMaybe⊠Thereâs always tomorrow.â I knew I had given myself away, I could feel my heart skip a beat, Iâm sure he could hear it, his facial expression didnât change but I could feel that he knew what I was feeling.Â
âHave a good evening,â I whispered, brushing past him to carry on my way.Â
+++++++
I had seen Elijah a couple of times since our first meeting, we had small conversations and I tried my best to conceal my heart, I didn't want to get close to this man despite enjoying his presence, his voice and the true appearance of his gentlemanly ways made me fall into a daydream greater than any story or dream I could ever have or read.Â
The next time I saw Elijah was three months after our first meeting, as I said we had multiple different meetings and they were all the greatest moments of my life despite how much I tried to protect my fragile heart. I had left my home for the park, I wanted to read outside of my home and get some fresh air away from the stuffiness of my bedroom. I rested the picnic blanket underneath a large tree, I read three chapters of my book before I felt a presence looming nearby, I placed the book to the side and stood up, surveying the area for a figure and jumped in my skin seeing Elijah approaching me.Â
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you, may I join you?" I nodded, smiling at the man, watching as he unbuttoned his shirt and sat down with me on the picnic blanket. He gently picked my book up, staring at the cover with intrigue, I observed him with butterflies growing in my stomach, a blush wanting to form on my cheeks as I continued to drown in what was possibly a huge crush for the Original Vampire.Â
"Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi... I'm not sure I've heard of this one before."Â
"I doubt you would've, I don't exactly picture you reading a book like this?" He smiled, tilting his head slightly, a deep chuckle leaving his mouth and he handed me back the book.Â
"Why is that?"Â
"Well... I don't know, I picture you reading older books nothing from the late 20th century to the early 21st century." Elijah briefly nodded in agreement, I smiled proudly at my guess and fiddled with the tassels hanging off of my bookmark. The vampire took off his suit jacket and began rolling up the sleeves of his button-up, I bit the inside of my cheek, begging myself to remain calm and avoid giving away any kind of emotions being revealed.Â
"Enlighten me, will you though, please? What's it about?" I cleared my throat, leaning closer to him with joy forming, giddy that he was showing interest in something that I liked and enjoyed.Â
"It's the third book in the series, I've read it before, and this one is one of my favourites. Essentially the series is all about control some people have these powers and the leaders are trying to control these people. The relationship of the main characters is what I happen to enjoy the most about it, I love how Tahereh created their bond from..."Â
"Why did you stop?" Elijah gently questioned, his face furrowing in concern, I wanted to cringe but I forced the words out before I could let that show. Taking a deep breath, I turned my gaze back to him, scrunching my face up briefly and proceeded to explain to Elijah what was going through my head.Â
"Whenever I ramble on to the Salvatores and all that, it's clear that they don't care and I'm not wanting to force that onto you. I'm sorry." Elijah tutted, shaking his head and holding out his hand for me to take. Hesitating for a moment, I finally rested my hand in his, holding my breath for a moment and kept my eyes focused on him as he rested his other hand on top of mine.Â
"You do that too often, Y/N, I can see you trying to protect your heart and you have a wide range of information waiting to come out and you shut yourself down because you expect everyone else to do that. I hope you find someone... someone who makes you realise you don't need to do that."Â
"Could possibly end up being you, Elijah," I whispered.
+++++
When someone unknown came into Mystic Falls, it was always a concerning event, the vampires were always the most suspicious of strangers and most of the time they were typically right for not trusting the stranger. It was late when I left the grill tonight, Elijah was growing on my mind more and more, and I would be hit with a wave of memories at random moments.Â
"Up ahead, there's an alley to your right, walk down it. Try anything-"Â
"Okay... I understand." I whispered, complying as I walked a little quicker and turned down the alleyway. I cried out as I was instantly shoved against the wall, my head ached and the world spun around me, I bit back a sob as I hit the ground and hissed as the gravel bit into my skin. I kicked off my heels, not fancying a broken ankle and lept to my feet running towards the street but missed as the man tackled me to the ground and which resulted in blood slightly trickling down my forehead and more cuts forming against my skin.Â
It felt like something out of a vampire movie, I heard a whoosh and then a light thud. Elijah appeared, holding the man against the wall effortlessly with one hand and easily compelled the man to walk off and not commit any sort of crime again. I let out a few sobs as the pain sunk in and the adrenaline started to fade away.
Elijah swooped me into his arms, effortlessly taking me to his mansion and rested me down on his obnoxiously large bed. He crouched down, gently cupping my face in his hands, observing my facial features and swiftly disappeared somewhere before running back.Â
"Are you okay?" He questioned, focusing on grabbing the things from the first-aid kit to treat my wounds.Â
"I'm okay..." I whispered, hissing as he wiped an alcohol wipe across the graze on my palm and watched as he apologised profusely for inflicting any added pain onto me. Elijah was so attentive to my needs, he cleaned the blood and dirt away from my cuts and grazes. Covering them with bandaids, doing what he could to assist in caring for me. It was as he was lingering for a moment, observing my form that I realised that Elijah Mikaelson would never hurt me. He would never cause any harm to me, Elijah Mikaelson would protect me and I knew that I wouldn't need to worry any longer.Â
"You wouldn't hurt me..." I whispered, staring at the vampire as he grasped my face and held eye contact with me.Â
"Y/N L/N I would never dream of hurting you, you... you're perfect... Y/N you are the epitome of perfect, I haven't met someone as intelligent, kind, sweet, and funny in a long time. Y/N I love you and I hope that you'll allow-" I pushed myself closer to him, carefully cupping his face to kiss the man who had possessed my dreams too often.Â
"Elijah, please, never let me go, I can't keep guarding myself-"Â
"Shhh, I've got you." He kissed my forehead, pulling me into his arms and pushing himself to lay against the headboard of his bed. I inhaled, holding onto the warm and mesmerising smell of his cologne, I curled into his chest and hummed gently as he rested another kiss on my forehead.Â
I felt protected, Elijah was my guardian angel, and he made me feel warm and gooey. Made me giddy and the butterflies a constant swarm in my belly, I fiddled with his hands, staring at the family ring that rested on his finger and glanced to him as he pulled my face to meet his. I hummed as he rested a kiss against my lips, sucking in another deep breath and curling in closer as he strokes my hair, his touch comforting and loving.Â
"Can I stay here? Just in your arms? Where I'm safe and with you, you Elijah who looks after me and takes the time to listen and know me?" Elijah's smile made the butterflies come to life, my cheeks flushed red and his simple words reassured me for an infinity of time.Â
"Always and forever."Â

âHereâs where I stop,â the coachman told you in a gruff voice. âThe horses wonât go any further.â
You stared out from the back of the wagon to the road ahead. Stretching about a mile, the harsh cold path made for an intimidating walk. Black rocks covered lightly with snow lined the long wheel tracks carts and horses made right up to this point. Beyond, it appeared as if very few trekked the rest of the way. The idea of walking through the freezing cold with nothing but your jacket, pants and boots seemed daunting. Your father told you the journey to the castle wouldnât be easy, but itâd be worth it in the end.Â
âWhy not?â You asked, hoping the coachman might change his mind.Â
âThe place frightens them,â he said. âThey wonât go any farther than this before they start getting riled up. That place is cursed, I tell you.â He faced forward as if looking at the castle himself, âYou have to be mad or desperate to go up there.â
âSo, Iâm to walk the rest of the way?â Walking alone up a tall mountain in the dark was not ideal during these times. âIs that safe?â Â
âThe castle isnât that far from here,â he said. âItâs only about half a mile until you reach the gates, then a bit more after that.â
Youâd dreaded the answer, but still wasn't surprised. A lot of villagers showed hesitancy when they spoke of Castle Dimitrescu. The mistress of the castle ruled over their side of the village with an iron fist. Your mother used to say it was by the grace and protection of Mother Miranda that she didnât slaughter the whole village. But, that did not stop anyone from noticing the disappearances or missing livestock.Â
Your neighbor woke up his entire household shouting about the maimed carcass of his prized cow, Anita. He told your father that he found her torn to bits in her stall, large chunks of flesh bitten off right to the bone. You suggested that a wolf mightâve gotten into his barn, but you said that to try diverting from what really troubled everyone: the beasts ate her. You shivered thinking of the hairy, snarling, bloody monsters who occasionally roam the forests, ravaging anything they can get their hands on. You pictured them feasting on the corpse of young, pretty Camila, whoâd gone missing several days ago or strong farmer Elijah whoâd last been seen working in his field. Only one person showed no fear upon entering the woods: The Huntsman.Â
The Huntsman became the village protector when they slaughtered a pack of monsters who'd broken through the gates. You never saw them up close, since they rarely traveled into the village and often wore a wide-brimmed hat that covered their face, but their long black coat and gloves made them recognizable. Their weapons proficiency and skill was unmatched. People swore they must be a beast in a much tamer form, with how quickly they dodged and wrestled the monsters to the ground.Â
You wished they'd come with you.Â
âWell, thank you for getting me this far,â you said to the coachman as you hopped off the wagon. âI wouldnât have made it before dark if you had not come.â
âMother Miranda says we must show each other kindness and generosity when we can,â he said, tipping his hat, âI pray that you reach the castle safely.âÂ
âThank you.âÂ
You shouldered your bag, and then began the trek up the mountain path. A curving, narrow road thickened by snow stretched ahead into the dark. You hoped the walk was not long, since the hour grew later and the sun began setting over the dense forests beyond. The higher youâd gone up the mountain, the colder the winds became. The chill blew through your jacket every time you moved, but you managed. You were no stranger to the cold since you spent many nights huddled by the dwindling fireplace at home. You did your best not to look between the trees lining the path or walk too briskly. One needed to keep their wits about them while walking through the woods. If you stared into the trees, there may be something staring right back. Speedy walking might invite said figure to chase you, and youâd come too far to be a meal now.Â
You continued along the way until you reached a tall iron gate. A symbol topped the gate: a large flower over two crossed swords. The insignia for House Dimitrescu. You searched around for a guard or caretaker, but nobody came. Timidly, you pushed on the gate and to your surprise it opened. As you stood there at the opening, a deep dread settled itself into his stomach. The feeling told you to turn back, and find another way to help feed your family. Yet, determination and pride put one foot in front of the other. You had no choice. Your fatherâs crops did not yield their usual abundance and your motherâs illness grew stronger. They had suggested you take a position in the castleâs employ. Families of those who worked in the castle received gold and even food parcels from their loved ones. Perhaps The Lady pays in goods and a bit of gold for service. You hoped working in the castle would feed the family. You pressed onwards.Â
The stone castle stood at the end of the road. The gray building looked dark and foreboding. High towers and battlements reached up into the sky, blocking out the bit of sunlight still left to the world, with tall windows surveying the yard below. Seeing the withering or bare foliage around the front entrance, it was no wonder the coachmanâs horses steered clear of the place. Even standing at the front steps, every nerve in your body told you to run. The lack of guards or servants unnerved you as well. Didnât castles have people bustling about? Noise and chatter in the air, bringing life to the silent building? Youâd always thought so. Regardless, turning back was no longer an option. You climbed the steep steps to the doors, and pulled it open.Â
Cautiously, you walked into the small entrance hall. A long carpet went up a short flight of stairs, leading into a room with a domed ceiling. Nervousness sets in deeper when you realize how little light filled the room. Two tall candelabras stood in inverted walls and another sat on a side table. The priceless antiques and refined appearance truly befitted the aristocratic family. However, it wasnât these that caught your attention.Â
Hanging between the candelabras was a tall painting of four young men in an intricate gold frame. A blond, two black haired, and one with brown hair. They each dressed in upper class fashion with vests, high collared shirts with silk cravats. They clearly came from wealth judging by how they carried themselves even in a painting. You read a plaque right at the bottom.Â
âFelix, Hyunjin, Minho and Jimin Dimitrescuâ.Â
The Ladyâs sons. Yes, youâd heard of them though had never seen them before. People said they could be as deadly as their mother, and you did not doubt that. You gazed around for a moment, expecting to find a servant or a butler welcoming their newest worker. Not a single soul. You found yourself completely alone.Â
âHello?â You dared to speak into the empty, dim room. âIs anyone here?â
A faint buzzing sound suddenly came from a hallway on your left and you gasped. The large swarm of flies move fluidly from behind the oak wood doors and into the entrance hall. Panic jumped into your throat and you moved to run before the flies blocked your path.Â
Suddenly, three men materialized. You realized at once who they were. Before you stood three of Lady Dimitrescuâs sons, the blond, black haired and brunet. They each wore long black coats with hoods over their heads. The one with brown hair came up close first. While his brothers kept their hair to their shoulders, he had his hair trimmed short. He carried a regal sophistication befitting his station. He had his chin up and back straight, with a certain kind of sternness in his eyes. It struck fear into you far too easily.Â
You shifted your eyes away as the man examined your features. âOh yes,â he said, turning your face this way and that, "I think he will do nicely. Felix?âÂ
He scanned over him one more time before the blond came up next. Felix, as the other called him, carried a glint in his eye that sent shivers through your bones. His golden hair created a stark contrast between his face and the hood over his head. He had a spread of freckles along his cheeks and nose, and his eyes did not devour you as the others did. A gloved hand caressed your jawline as he examined your face like a jeweler studying a new gem. What were they looking at? The unknowing frightened you more. When you tried looking away from him, Felix forced you by the chin. Something about the three of them churned your stomach, and every razzled nerve screamed to flee.
âI agree, Minhoâ he finally said, âHe is perfect. He has strong bones and his blood seems to pump at a normal rate. He is young enough to withstand the strain. How old are you? Nineteen? Twenty?âÂ
"Twenty-three," you squeaked.Â
"Hm, good, good."
âHeâs pretty,â the black haired man behind them said. âMuch prettier than anyone weâve gotten so far.âÂ
âLooks are not important in the experiment, Hyunjin,â Felix rolled his eyes.Â
âNo, but they certainly are a benefit.âÂ
You flinched when he reached for you. His hair the shade of night stayed tied from his face, giving way to his angular features. That and his sharp eyes reminded you of a black cat hiding in the bushes. He was beautiful, but terrifying. He was a siren that lured men to their deaths; a venus flower that traps its victims between its jaws. The image of him lying in wait for you in the forest crossed your mind, and you gulped. You couldnât stop staring into his dark eyes, wanting to be near him while also wishing to run away. Were it not for the tinge of red on the inner parts of his lips, heâd appeal to you more. Â
âAre you sure we can't take him upstairs?â he asked Felix, smirking at you. "We can tie him down and play with him," he came closer, a strange metallic smell on his breath, "I bet that mouth can make the sweetest soundsâŠ"
âWha-Wha-â You could hardly get the words out.Â
âI wonât hurt you, pretty,â Hyunjin said, drawing closer and closer. Gloved fingers traced down your chest, and you stepped away. âIâve been told I can be a very gentle lover,â he said before Felix stood between them.Â
âYou have your own playthings in the cellars,â he hissed. âGo fiddle with them and leave my subject alone.âÂ
âUgh, you never let me have any fun!âÂ
Their words sickened and frightened you. You tried concealing the ice being pumped into your veins from your heart. Felix reached to touch your cheek, but frowned when you pulled away.Â
âWhat do you want with me?â You heard yourself squeak out.Â
âNothing much,â answered Felix. âJust your body."
âMy body?!"
"Don't worry," he sneered, "You won't miss it."
You realized then what happened to the servants before you. Quickly, you recalled how eagerly your father insisted you find work in the castle. Heâd spent days telling you how beneficial itâd be for the family, and how desperately they needed the money. When a family in town received packages after sending their daughter to the castle, he noted how it could be them eating fresh bread and butter. Your mother could get the medicine she needed. Theyâd get coal for the fire and oil for the lamps. Did he know the truth and simply hid it from you, his only son? It wouldâve saddened you if panic did not overcome you so easily. To him, heâs helping the family. Heâs helping by making you one less mouth to feed. Your shaky hands gripped your bag to keep themselves steady.Â
âIt wonât hurt,â Felix assured you. âWell, not too badly.â
âMother isnât home yet,â Minho told him. âSheâll be away for a while, so thereâs plenty of time.âÂ
"You only need to relax," hissed Hyunjin, finger tracing your collarbone. "I know a few things that can help with that."
âNo,â you said in a shaky breath. âNo, pleaseâŠI have a familyâŠtheyâll come looking for meâŠâ
Felix laughed, âSilly boy. Your family sent you up here for this very reason.â He then said, âSo, do what youâre told, and come with us.â
He didnât grab your hand quickly enough. You rushed for the large front doors, slamming into them from the force of the sprint before realizing theyâd been locked. Over your shoulder, you saw the three men staring at you wickedly. The sound of faint buzzing jolted you alive.Â
âBrother!â one of the men called, âWhere are you going? You only just arrived!â
You didnât waste time asking for an explanation. Seeing a room off to the side, you made a break for it. Running down a corridor and another flight of stairs, your only light was the moonlight shining through the windows. How could anyone see in such darkness? The curtain windows kept you from gaining a sense of direction. The buzzing grew louder behind you, and you went down the next corridor you found. Bursting through an archway, you ended up in a large room with checkered flooring and a high ceiling. Four strange statues stood guard in front of a doorway, and you knew this way would be pointless. You needed to find a way out. You rushed through to another corner area, before reaching a hallway. You didnât hear the insects anymore, but that elevated your anxiety. You shouldnât have come here. You shouldâve gone back home, told your father the Lady didnât need any more servants, and stayed there. Now, you were running for your life.Â
You kept running until you ended up in a bed chamber. The fireplace being the only source of light, it flickered across the walls and gave everything a warm glow. You stared around for a hiding spot, but not quickly enough. Suddenly, hundreds of flies surrounded you and you did your best to shield your face. Their sharp teeth sunk into your arms, legs and torso; their buzzing deafened you to the rest of the world. You grimaced, and swatted at the ones trying to nibble your face, nearly stumbling backwards over a footstool in the process.Â
âAh, there you are, lovely,â he heard Hyunjin chuckle darkly. The flies suddenly flew from him and swirled around until they created his full form. He stared down at you, a distinct seduction in his eyes. âLooks like you found my favorite room in the castle. How about I lock the door and we get to know each other better?âÂ
You didnât respond. You clambered to your feet, then made a dash past Hyunjin, breaking through a wall of insects in the process. Hurrying back down the way youâd come, hearing Hyunjinâs laughter somewhere behind, you returned to the room with the statues. Running through the main hall, a high-ceiling with a large crystal chandelier above the checkered floors, you nearly bumped into one of the chairs in front of the fire. You hardly felt it as you kept moving. You desperately searched for a place to hide, but you found so few places. Moving through large ornate doors, you entered a dark dining room.Â
A dining room with a long table, bright moonlight became the only source of light guiding you through. You hoped the darkness might shield you from your pursuer until you reached outside. You bumped into one of the tall-backed chairs on your way to the other door, but the pain didnât distract you. What did they want with you anyways? Kill you? Feed off of you? You didnât want to think about it. How could your father do this to you? You saw a pair of doors, and seeing the courtyard outside, realized that might be a way out.Â
âOh, Brother,â Hyunjinâs voice came through the room in a sing-song voice. âWhere are you?â
You scrambled and ducked behind one of the dining chairs. Buzzing preceded Hyunjinâs entry, and you spotted his reflection in a glass cabinet door. You covered your mouth to keep yourself quiet. Hyunjinâs top half remained human, but his bottom half broke off into the black flies so he glided about the room.Â
âWe promise we wonât hurt you,â he said innocently. âNot much, at least.â You heard him give a short sniff, "I know you're in here. I can smell your sweet, thick, hot blood. I can almost taste it on my tongue, and itâs delicious. I bet other parts of you taste just as good.âÂ
You waited until Hyunjin turned his back to quickly go through the doors into the courtyard.Â
An iron gazebo stood in the center of the courtyard, which broke off into different sections of the castle. You continued glancing around for signs of the three brothers, since Hyunjin had been on his trail minutes ago. You were certain they meant to toy with you before killing you. They can move faster; theyâre likely stronger, yet have not caught you yet. You hoped to be gone before they discovered you again. On the right side, a cobbled pathway lead through an archway out into a garden area.Â
Hedges lined the walkways around the expansive space, circling around a bronze fountain statue in the middle. The garden must be beautiful in the spring, but in the winter, it was a frozen eden. Dead trees and withering bushes decorated the space, and ice and snow covered the fountains and benches. Your boots crushed the thin layer of snow on the ground as you ran through to a high wall on the other side.Â
âBrother!â It was Minho this time, whose voice came from somewhere in the distance. âBrother, where are you?â
You grabbed onto a thick vine clinging to the stone fence, placed your foot on one at the bottom, then lifted yourself onto the wall. You ignored the voices calling from inside the castle, and started climbing. It did not take much time to scale the ten foot wall, even if the icy stones and frozen vines burned your hands. Desperation and panic numbed you to the sensations around you. Youâd been a fool to come here. You shouldâve listened to your gut when you stepped up to the house, but youâd thought of your family. Your father made it sound so important that you go to the castle; he said itâd help the family in such a special way. It hurt thinking your father intended to serve you on a platter to these people. You wanted to think he didnât know and really thought his son was manning stables or serving meals from a kitchen. With all the talk of aiding their family, you believed youâd be doing more for them than toiling in dying corn crops.Â
To them, the best thing you could do is die.Â
You reached the top of the wall, and swung your leg over the side. Freedom hit you right before something swiped at your feet from below. A large black beast growled from several feet below, yellow eyes glowing at you angrily. It resembled a wolf, but it stood on hind legs with the body of a man covered in fur. A scream escaped you and you fell into the garden again. Your back hitting the ground hard shocks of pain went through your body. You heard more growling and barking from behind the wall; long claws scratched the hard stone, and feet kicking the snowy earth. The fall disoriented you long enough that you didnât notice the figure gliding up to him.Â
âAh, there you are!â Minho looked down, his hood bringing a shadow over his face. âWeâve been looking for you.âÂ
In this brief moment of weakness, the overwhelming sounds of fluttering wings filled your ears. You swiped at those buzzing around you, pinching your eardrums with their high-pitched sounds, before Minho and Hyunjin grabbed your wrists. A scream ripped through your throat as the two men dragged you behind them. Felix joined them at your feet as you struggled and wildly fought for escape. Fear injected itself into you fully, creating a list of scenarios that were worse than anything you imagined previously. Felix soon flew right over you, his body a dark cloud of flies, and he deeply inhaled your scent.Â
âVirgin blood,â he smiled drunkenly. âSo sweet. So pure.â He took another hint, then said, âToo bad I wonât get a drop of itâŠâÂ
You saw the hallways and stairwells of the castle fly by until they went into complete darkness. The backs of your ankles and legs scraped against hard, rough surfaces, and you cried out whenever they knocked onto the floor too hard. Deprived of your main senses, you could do nothing but let them take you further into the castle dungeons.
"Put him on the table," Felix instructed his siblings. "I'll prepare everything else."
Hyunjin and Minho brought you onto a wooden slab in a dimly lit room. When you glanced around, you realized theyâd brought you into a room beneath the castle. Soft candlelight hung above to bring light against the black stone walls, illuminating the workbenches and tables of books, chemicals, petri dishes and various works in progress. A laboratory. They did not plan to kill you. They planned to torture you.Â
âWhat is going on?â You asked, panting and crying as Hyunjin and Minho strapped you to a wooden table. You let out a choked sob, and you squeezed the blinding tears. You panicked when you saw them strapping down your ankles next."Wait, no! Please! What are you doing? Stop! Pl-please!"
Felix picked up a jar containing a strange mass inside of it; you heard him muttering under his breath, and your fear worsened. You struggled against the straps holding you down, hoping they might give way if you tried hard enough, but to no avail. Minho meanwhile reached for a clear bottle while Hyunjin unsheathed a small knife from under his cloak.Â
"What is happening?" You sobbed though none of them answered. "Why are you doing this to me?" You cried, "Please, I want to go home. I won't tell anyone anything. Please-"
"-Roll up your sleeve, Hyunjin," Minho told his brother, coming to him with two needles and vials in hand.Â
Hyunjin did as requested. He shook back his sleeve to reveal his wrist, which he presented to one of Minhoâs needles. You saw him sink one needle into Hyunjinâs veins, dark red blood filling the vial halfway. Both men waited for enough blood to fill the vial before Minho pulled away from him. This was not before you saw the cut seal itself closed.Â
"What are you going to do with that?" You asked, horrified when you saw Minho attached a needle and tube to the end of the syringe. "That's blood! You're putting blood in me?"
"It's the only way you'll be one of us," said Minho. "Hold still or this will hurt even more."
"Wha-"
You flinched when Hyunjin tore off your shirt sleeve and tied it tightly around your bicep. Minho then started flicking the space between forearm and upper arm.Â
"Stop struggling," Minho grunted, "I can't do it right if you're moving around."
You should've kissed your mother goodbye longer. Sheâd die thinking youâre living a good life in the castle; perhaps that is best. Sheâd be happy for you. Perhaps sheâll get her medicine and feel better. Youâd thought youâd have plenty of chances to hug and kiss them. Now, you wouldnât have that chance ever again. Minho managed to find the vein, and sunk the needle into it, ignoring your wincing.Â
"He has strong veins, Felix," Minho said. "That is a good sign, no?"
"It is."
You couldn't look. You didn't see Minho inject Hyunjin's blood into your arm, but you certainly felt it. A deep searing pain suddenly ran through your veins. It scorched every nerve, causing you to violently shake on the table. Your screams went unheard by the brothers, who continued their âexperimentâ. You barely felt it when Hyunjin ripped open your shirt to reveal the torso underneath. The pain numbed you to the knife cutting from beneath the chest to the naval. The thick scent of blood filled your lungs; it spilled, fast and hot, from the gash in your stomach. Youâre sure to die now. You cried out for your mother, for your father, for Mother Miranda, their protector and savior. Â
Felix finally turned around, and in your blurry vision, you saw him holding a glass jar. You could not make out the inside, but it wiggled and ticked as it knocked into the glass sides.Â
âStay still,â Felix said, unscrewing the lid. âMoving around too much will interrupt the process.â
âThis is the last time, Felix,â Minho said, putting the needle and vial aside. âRight?â
âYes, yes, yes,â he replied.Â
Your jaw clenched so tight you couldnât speak. Felix took out the contents of the jar with a pair of forceps. The creature wriggled between the metal clamps, but Felix had no trouble holding it steady. Your eyes widened when it came close enough for you to see it. Fleshy and pink, the creature had a large head and bumpy skin. It made Minho and Hyunjin wrinkle their noses in disgust while you screamed in terror. Felix remained unfazed by it all. He placed the veiny beast up against the open wound, and then sunk it deep inside.Â
The thing whirled around inside, its slimy membrane slicking the opening to go deeper. It took several seconds for you to realize the hard mass in your stomach was the creature. The burrowing sensation added a whole new addition of pain. Your fists curled until skin tightened over your knuckles. You thrashed around as much as your bonds let you as the parasite latched itself to you. Soon, you felt your abdomen sickly churning which then spread to the rest of you. Your fatherâs face swam in front of you; the face of the man meant to protect and guide you. He sent you here. He sent his only son to his death.Â
You prayed it was worth it.
****
Felix stood beside the table, watching the body twitching and writhing on the table until you stopped all at once. His eyes scanned you for signs of mutation or transformation; he looked for graying skin or black claws or bloodshot yellow eyes. He expected any moment for the subject to start thrashing, growling and foaming at the mouth as you turned into a Lycan, like so many other failures. Either that or die and never come back. When none of that happened, he gingerly touched the stomach wound. The Cadou parasiteâs membrane held regeneration properties, heâd learned, so it often healed whatever wounds it created to enter the body. Felix felt around for the mass, feeling a hard ball deep underneath the muscle. Felix knew the parasite will assimilate to the DNA and alter your genetic makeup. He hoped injecting blood already infected with mold mutations will strengthen the hostâs body and aid in the transformation. It had to work. This must work.Â
âHeâs not dead,â said Hyunjin, his voice breaking the silence. âI can hear his heart beating.â
Felix could hear it too. Your mind may have gone blank, but that was the Cadou taking over. The last subject took three days to morph into a Lycan, which was then released into the wild by the brothers.Â
âThatâs good, right? It means he might survive,â Hyunjin continued.Â
âOnly time shall tell us.âÂ
Felix turned back to his work table where he kept all his notes and books, and put down the jar. This was his last one. If this one did not work out, then heâd need to go back to the reservoir where Moreau kept his stash of parasites. He hoped he didnât have to. Even if he can now adapt to the cold mountain climate, he still hated going to that eerie, stinking lake. But, if it helped his cause, he'd endure it a million times.Â
He promised himself heâd build something marvelous, a creature of pure strength and agility that will make his mother proud. He looked at the books on his table. Felix spent ages researching, collecting, and absorbing any word of information he could about the Cadou parasite and the mold. Heâd observed Moreauâs experiments from afar, and read all of his motherâs and Mother Mirandaâs notes as well as jotting down his own discoveries. One sheet in particular caught his eye and his heart dropped.Â
The crest of House Dimitrescu was a large flower with two swords crossing underneath it. A symbol of feminine strength and unity. His mother often told him she saw herself as the center with her blossoms at her sides. Itâd always be her and her children. Thereâd once been four of them, but that changed so quickly.Â
âI found his things,â Minhoâs voice cut through his thoughts. âHe dropped it in the main hall. We might find something of use in here.â
âLike a name.âÂ
Lady Dimitrescu still wore Jiminâs flower. A black rose she kept pinned to her chest with three others so she could keep them with her at all times. He remembered his youngest brother as he flipped through his journal for a blank page.Â
Jimin was the last of them to be âbornâ. Black strands falling on the sides of his face, heâd been wiry, strong and full of life. Felix remembered how his mother fawned over his sweet smile and how heâd pout his full lips when he didnât get his way. His mother adored them all, but Jimin had been her baby. Heâd also been the most reckless. Felix shouldâve kept him back when his younger brother chased The Huntsman. He told him to stay with Mother, and he and the others would handle them, but no. He shouldâve listened to Minho. He shouldâve listened to Mother.Â
With a gun blast to a window and a gust of cold air, Jiminâs life ended in a flash.Â
âDay 0:Â
Subject is a twenty-three year old male. A bit malnourished, but has a strong heartbeat and responded to the treatment favorably. I inserted the parasite spliced with infected blood, about half of a vial to avoid one overcoming the other. By touch alone, the Cadou appears to have latched itself to the subjectâs stomach and began spreading instantaneously. I wish I could cut him open to see the extent, but that will ruin everything. I have high hopes for this one. He shows real promise.âÂ
âHis name is YN,â he heard Minho say. âSomebody sewed it into his shirt collar.âÂ
âFurther testing needs to be conducted, but I might finally have the weapon Iâve been looking for.âÂ
âHeâs handsome,â said Hyunjin. âMother will love him, Iâm sure of it.âÂ
âMother cannot know,â Felix said, writing down the last of his notes. âNot yet.âÂ
âWhy not?â he asked.Â
He didnât want to tell them, but his brothers knew him better than most. âBecause she doesnât know youâre still doing this,â Minho suspected, âDoes she?â Felix heard the outrage build in his deep voice, âHave you been keeping these a secret from her?â
âSheâll try to stop me,â Felix replied. âSheâd been so brokenhearted when the first three failed,â he faltered at Minhoâs angry eyes. âI couldnât tell her that Iâd continued the experiments without her. She already believes itâs pointless.â
âMother Miranda forbids us from creating any more vessels,â Minho said. âShe told Mother there will be serious consequences if we continue these experiments without her permission. You know how serious Miranda is about the parasites and the metamycete. Hyunjin and I will already be in enough trouble for helping you, but imagine what sheâll do to the person who disobeyed her orders and stole valuable resources from her?â Felix heard the frustration in his voice. Minho, the eldest, never failed to call out the truth. âFelix, this must cease. These experiments of yours must stop. This must be the last one.âÂ
Minho, the strong loyal son who did all he could to protect his family. Heâd borne the same guilt after Jiminâs death, but heâd learned to move on. Felix could not.Â
âBut I am so close,â he implored, gazing right into his brotherâs eyes. âI can feel it. This one will be a success. I know it will.â
âThat is what you said of the last one, and they died within a few hours,â he said.Â
âBecause they were weak,â Felix retorted. âThis one is strong. Heâll survive.âÂ
âFelix,â Minho said gently, âPlease, promise us this will be the last one.âÂ
âWe need to keep going,â he replied through gritted teeth. âWe need to keep trying until we get the right one.â
âPromise us, Felix,â Hyunjin spoke up this time. âMother is still grieving over Jimin. If she hears that youâve been doing this, she might think youâre trying to replace him and become even more upset. Promise youâll stop.â
âMother will see I am right when he is ready,â Felix said. âOnce she sees how strong, durable, and agile my creation is, she will forget all of that. She wants to kill The Huntsman more than any of the others. She wishes to seek revenge on them, and when she sees that my creation can do what we cannot, sheâll understand. When my creation is fully grown, Mother and Mother Miranda will see the benefits of having such a creature.â
âShe said she did not want us going anywhere near The Huntsman,â said Hyunjin. âShe doesnât want to lose us too.â
âWe wonât be going near them. He will,â he nodded to the body on the table. âThe Huntsman is not the average villager. There is something different about them. I can tell.â He hesitated, âYou two werenât there. You werenât there when Jiminie died.âÂ
His throat dried up suddenly, and he looked away from them. Heâd heard Jiminâs cries from the lower kitchens during his search for an intruder. Theyâd been low, deep grunts as he fought off against a strange figure in a hooded trench coat. Felix recalled standing at the end of the hall leading towards the kitchen, and hearing Jimin fight for his life. Heâd insisted on joining them in hunting down the person whoâd broken into their castle. Felix told him to stay with their mother, but he'd escaped. Felix had flown right to the doorway, intent on handling the Huntsman himself, when the Huntsman shot at the window by the door. Icy cold air streamed into the room, creating a barrier between Felix and the two. His hand instinctively flexed when he thought of the burning, paralyzing ice on his hand. He tried pushing through several times, Jiminâs grunts making him more desperate, before it happened.Â
The Huntsman grabbed Jimin by the collar and threw him into one of the windows. The direct contact caused Jiminâs body to stiffen, and Felix watched as his youngest brother succumbed to their one weakness. Felix chased the Huntsman throughout the castle, grief boiling his blood and fueling his rage, before the Huntsman made it outside and over the garden wall. All that was left of Jimin was his torso and crumbled crystals on the floor. Felix remembered kneeling beside him, sobbing and cradling the crystalline body full of regret and self-loathing. The grief worsened when his mother found them. Her cries still echo in his head late at night.Â
âThey got lucky,â Minho told him. âThere is nothing special about them.â
âThen how come we cannot find them, hm?â he snapped, his own guilt starting to fill his chest once more. âWhy canât Heisenbergâs boys find them? Changbin, Chan and Han have a better sense of smell than any one-oh, do not make that face. You know itâs true,â he told Hyunjin, whoâd scoffed. âThey would have at least spotted a cottage or a hideout, but they haven't. I am telling you. That bastard, whoever they are, is not normal. We need someone who can rid us of them for good, and he is it.âÂ
Felix did not particularly like thinking of Chan Heisenberg. As if Jiminâs memory did not already break his heart, Chan only piled onto that.Â
âDarling,â Hyunjin came to him, cupping his cheek, âWhat happened to Jimin isnât your fault.â
Yes, it was, but heâd never say so out loud.Â
âYouâve already done enough to prepare us for another attack,â he said. âYou made us immune to the cold. If they were to come now, no amount of wind or ice could stop us. We do not need any experiment you create.â He pushed blond strands from Felixâs face, âYou donât have to keep doing this. You could possibly end up dead too, if the wrong person found out about this.âÂ
Hyunjin spoke truthfully, and Felix knew this. He will surely face Mirandaâs wrath if she learned what he was up to; his mother might face consequences for her sonâs actions. But, theyâd understand the benefits of his plan with time. His mother did not always approve of his experiments. He hadn't forgotten his motherâs shock when she found him standing stark naked in their courtyard, letting the cold air touch his skin.Â
Shortly after Jiminâs passing, Felix decided he wouldnât lose another brother ever again. So, he went to work creating a genome that would give them the ability to adapt to freezing temperatures. He tested this mainly on himself: injecting the serum into his arm, then sticking his hand out the window. Starting with a hand, it soon became his whole arm, then his shoulder, then his chest, until finally he could stand in the cold unharmed. His insect form took time to adapt to the change, but soon enough he was able to move as swiftly outside as he could inside. He passed it to both Minho and Hyunjin, making all three men tolerant of the climate.Â
When they saw The Huntsman again, no amount of icy wind could destroy them.Â
"If this one fails-" Minho began to say, but Felix cut him off.Â
"-It won't fail," he snapped.Â
"If it does," he continued, "This will be the last one."
"What?"
"I won't participate in something that would hurt our mother," Minho said firmly. "She grieves enough for Jimin. Giving her false hope of another son is cruel even for you, Felix."
"She's in enough pain," Hyunjin added. "Even if she doesn't say it. She still has his corpse in her bed chambers. She won't put it in the crypt."
Felix knew this well. He often came across Jimin's crystalized torso standing in a glass display in his mother's bedroom. Sheâd look at it whenever she was alone and weep. It was another reminder of his failure and her loss. He promised himself he wouldn't let Jimin die in vain. He created the serum so she may never lose another son to weaknesses. He would give her another one to replace the boy she lost, and this time make him faster and stronger.Â
"Fine," he stated, "If that's how you feel, you're free to not participate anymore. But, I am going to keep trying. The Huntsman needs to be stopped. If you two may not take this threat seriously, but I do. I wonât sit by and let them continue insulting our house; I wonât let them stomp out our bloodline. They will pay for what they have done to us, to our mother, to Jimin-â he stopped short, swallowing down the lump filling his throat and taking a breath.Â
âFelix,â Minho said, âJimin wouldnât want you to do something that may get you killed-â
â-Well, Jimin isnât here,â he growled. âHeâs dead! Heâs dead because I wasnât strong enough to save him! I promised Mother Iâd protect him, and I didnât!âÂ
âFelix-â
"-Boys!" A female voice spoke from somewhere above. Their mother may be several feet above the dungeons, but they heard her faintly. "Boys, where are you?"
"Don't you two dare tell her," Felix warned them.Â
"We won't," Minho said, "It is better she never learns of this."
"Felix? Minho? Hyunjinnie!" He heard their mother call to them again, âBoys?âÂ
"If this one should fail, she will never know."
"It will not fail."
"Come, let's away," Hyunjin said between them. "Mother is calling."
The three young men swirled into insects, and flew from their laboratory into the main hall. Lady Alcina Dimitrescu stood in the middle of the hall in front of the fire, her white gown illuminated by the flames. She sucked on the end of a cigarette holder coolly, letting the thick stream into the air as she contemplated quietly. Standing ten feet tall, her black hair in curls under a wide-brimmed hat, their mother was a woman of elegance and sophistication. Yet, even with this, she still exudes power, and demands the respect of her aristocratic birth. A smile graced her face when they appeared in front of her, immediately turning to them. However, the smile faded when she looked at them closely.
"You've been arguing," she stated, glancing between the three of them.
"Felix tried taking one of the corpses from the dungeons to his lab," Hyunjin said. His creative mind made him a clever liar. "I told him to leave them be since they have no use beyond their blood, but he disagreed."
"I wanted to study them," Felix added. "I wanted to see what made them turn into those undead things."
"It's obviously the blood disease, you fool," Minho rolled his eyes.
"I also wanted to see if I could somehow isolate that disease and use it for-"
"-To get a bigger head to fit your ego?-"
"-If anyone has an 'ego' around here, it's you-"
"-That's enough!" Their mother cut in, looking between the two of them. "I told you to leave those creatures alone, Lixie," she said, walking past them to a chair by the fire. âThey are far past any real use to anyone.âÂ
âI was only curious, Mother,â he replied. His eyes met Minhoâs, and the elder stuck out his tongue.Â
"How was your meeting, Mother?" Hyunjin asked, gliding to her side and sitting on the floor, his head on her knee. He closed his eyes as her fingers combed through his dark hair.Â
"Heisenberg didn't give you trouble, did he?" Asked Minho, grabbing a wine pitcher from nearby to pour glasses for them all. Sangrias Virginis. Maiden's Blood. House Dimitrescu were famous for their winemaking, having a special blend with a secret ingredient.Â
Virgin blood.Â
"Nothing outside the usual," she said. "Mother Miranda wished to discuss the baby again. She senses the child is close, and will soon be in our grasp."
"She already has you and the other lords. I donât understand why she needs a baby," Hyunjin said, taking his own glass from Minhoâs tray. "Could she not simply take a regular baby and use that? Why this specific one? "
"She believes this child has qualities that will make the experiment favorable" she replied. She took a long drink from the glass, then said, "Nothing can really replace a lost child. You cannot remake them a second time." The three men exchanged nervous glances and drank from their cups. She gave a soft sigh, "I made a decision, my sons."
"Yes?"
"I've decided," she paused, "I've decided it is time to put Jimin to rest."
"In the family crypt, you mean."
"No, not in the crypt. He never liked it down there. I thought perhaps in the music room. You know how much he loved music." Felix saw the sadness in his mother's eyes. "He deserves that.â
âWhat he deserves is vengeance,â Felix said over his cup. He swished the crimson liquid around in the silver wine glass, contemplating his subject downstairs. âHe deserves to be avenged.â
âWe have already discussed this, Felix,â Alcina said firmly. âYou are not to seek out The Huntsman. You boys leave that filthy meatsack to me.â She then continued, âI think heâd look lovely in the nook in the corner.â
âI can paint a portrait of him for you, Mother,â said Hyunjin. âWe can hang it next to him.â
âThatâd be beautiful,â she agreed.Â
Felix did not want to think of what that looked like. He imagined Jimin's corpse being put on display in their music room, a grand space across from Hyunjinâs atelier, where the grand piano sat. The family sometimes gathered there after dinner, where Jimin played his compositions on the piano or the violin. Felix did not want to think of his body sitting in its glass case, no longer able to play his beloved instruments for their entertainment anymore. It wouldnât be a music room. Itâd be a burial site. They'd carry him there, say kind words and put him in a corner. Felix drowned the vision with more wine, the blood thick on his tongue. He thought about the corpse on his lab table.Â

i have other things to do but here we gooooo owl house fic recs:
Autism to Autism Communication by Polyhexian
"I understand sarcasm," Hunter said, sounding offended. He crossed his arms. "You didn't do the voice thing." Darius stared at him. "The what?" Hunter put his arms in the air and gave his hands a sarcastic little wave. "I GuEsS I'LL hAvE tO sToP cOmInG oVeR, tHeN," he said in the most over the top and comical parody of sarcasm that Darius had ever heard in his life.
everything by this author is great & this one is a joy and a delight!!
Extant Species by Polyhexian
She'd been called a monster more times than she could count, but she knew what a real monster looked like.
i'd happily rec a bunch of polyhexian's stuff but this lil vee & hunter fic was a highlight. especially enjoy the part where hunter's advising her on how best to go about murdering him. love that for them both!!
Owlet by Polyhexian
"Eda!" Hunter yelled as he shouldered open the door and Hooty cooed and rambled at him, "I need help with my potions homewooooooaaaat the HELL is that?!" Luz looked up from where she was sitting on the couch and reading what appeared to be a romance novel about werewolves. "What is what?" "That!" he yelled, pointing at the hulking behemoth curled up in the middle of the room in a massive pile of blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals. "Is that the owl beast?!"
& 1 more!! short n sweet n cute
With Clay and Star Scraps by SiryyGray
Hunter decided to do some research into Grimwalkers. First discovery: Grimwalkers were outlawed in every city under every rule as far back as the history books go. Second discovery: Grimwalkers have no natural means of death. Third discovery: thereâs a caveat to that second one.
some absolutely brutal grimwalker content. SPOILERS: hunter can't outlive belos.
Intrusion by rayrock
'He drops something in. It moves and writhes, but it is clearly exhausted. âEat,â is all he says, voice barely above a whisper. But it is a demand nonetheless, intimidating enough to send shivers down her spine. She hisses in protest once more. He tucks the notepad and pen into his cloak and pulls out a staff. It unfolds and glows a bright red. He does not say anything more. He is nearly always silent when she sees him.' Or: Vee and the Golden Guardâs relationship is complicated, but it is there
some more vee & hunter content for you
just a little bit left by prodigalDaughter
The first time Darius had seen the new Guard unmasked, the fury and betrayal had risen in him like floodwater, bubbling and steaming out of creeks and sewers. Creed had never told him he had a son. ââ Hunter has discovered what he is, but heâs not the only one who has to grapple with assumptions made about his origins.
hey remember the other day when i was talking about 'what if darius thought hunter was the previous golden guard's son'! well here u go someone wrote that fic
Wild and Wandering Cries by PorcelanaRota
So his uncle goes flying into the wall directly above him and he is unable to dodge. And his uncle, who is now more palisman curse slime than he is flesh and blood, splatters on the wall, on the ground, on him. Hunterâs been in hundreds of life-or-death situations. Heâs felt real and true and visceral fear that sank into his bones and marinated into terror more times than not. Still, nothing has ever left him so shocked and horrified and just flat-out scared that time has actually stopped.
belos splash zone? belos splash zone.
mistakes (the thrilling saga, in high definition) by quynnyah
"This," Amity says, "is not normal human behavior." (Or: Amity and Hunter volunteer to help Camila on a grocery trip. It goes about as well as expected.)
some banging amity & hunter in the human realm stuff for u
Notched by angelcloves
Belos removes the ear tag from his newest Grimwalker.
tiny wee fic giving a backstory for Hunter's notched ear. i rotate this concept in my brain all the time. absolutely twisted.
There is no open window, but the floors still creep by theprincessofdenial
On Tuesday, they eat Chinese. On Wednesday, Camila once again doesnât have the time to cook, so pizza it is. On Thursday, she wants to make a proper dinner but thereâs a hold up at the clinic, Luz knocks over a shelf, Willow has a wardrobe emergency, and then Amityâs cat goes missing. And Hunter beats Gus up so badly the boy ends up bleeding, so thereâs also that.
hgnnnh i would rec this entire series if i could (it's 14 fics totally 200k total). its all so chewy i want to get my teeth into it and rrrrrrrrrr. ANYWAY this is my no 1 fav i've been back and re-read it about 7 times. love the Camila Noceda POV; the way it captures the chaos of all 6 kids in the house and makes it feel so real & vivid; the absolutely brutal Hunter characterisation. if ur a Hunter fan go read this right away.
Distance by theprincessofdenial
For the first minute, they all just stand there in silence and watch the airship slowly disappear beyond the horizon. Even though theyâre supposed to react quickly, the cold still comes as a shock. It takes some time for the reality to settle in and for them to realize how useless everything they have brought is going to be when their marrow freezes. Hunter hears some of the Scouts inhaling sharply after they approach the ledge and look down. They turn around, unsure where to start, and they shuffle their feet in the snow (terrible decision, really, this way their boots are going to get wet even quicker). Hunterâs the first one to break the silence, and oh, he does it with style. He has been rehearsing that line for a week. âSee you at the bottom, suckers!â he exclaims as he pulls out the staff and disappears in a flash of red light. (or: The Obligatory "Leave Everyone at the Top of the Mountain and See Who Makes It Back to the Bottom Alive" Fic. With a splash of Steve)
2nd rec from this series. exactly what it says on tin. *banging pots together* you like whump come get your whump i ADORE what this author does w Hunter. also Steve is there (whump for Steve!!)
A Potter's Field by theprincessofdenial
The view from the staircase is, well, not stunning, thatâs definitely not the word. Itâs just that âviewâ is supposed to be accompanied by âstunning,â and Luz can feel her brain coming to a screeching halt and refusing to process what theyâre seeing. It's skeletons. Come on, they both knew it was going to be skeletons. The entire Isles know at this point. (Or: despite what the stories would have you believe, in the aftermath, there are things to deal with. Those things include ruined infrastructure, electing new leaders, and prosecuting those responsible for the old regime. And apparently, also Grimwalker mass graves.)
& third and final. unbelievably chewy post-canon fic. lets get into the reconstruction of the isles in full detail. goes hard as hell. will sit in my brain for a long time i think. cannot rec this enough.
and rats all for now!! i got a bunch more stuff in my 'marked for later' so watch this space

summary: a vampire and a werewolf want to put an end to the war between their families. in their dangerous attempt to achieve peace, they find love where they least expected... pairing: werewolf!mingyu x vampire!wonwoo x witch!reader genre: adventure, fantasy, a lil romance warnings: mentions of blood, burns, cutting, death, killing, suicide & other supernatural themes author's note: the title is inspired by taylor swift's bad blood, while the plot is vaguely influenced by romeo & juliet with the lore loosely based on twilight & the vampire diaries; some song references in italics hehe word count: 6.2k
Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Seoul, where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny, Where bad blood makes good hands unclean.
The werewolf Kim clan and the vampire Jeon clan had been enemies for as long as Mingyu could remember. He didn't recall a time when the two families didn't fight over something. There was an unwritten rule that the werewolves shouldn't go into the vampires' territory and vice versa. And for the most part, the agreement was followed. But occasionally, there were casualties. Occasionally, Mingyu lost a distant cousin or an uncle to the feud between the Kims and the Jeons. He was so tired of it. He wanted peace so desperately. Little did he know, he was not the only one who felt this strange longing.
Wonwoo was exhausted of this war going on between his family and the Kim one. He no longer wanted to participate in the pointless fights. He no longer wished to see another vampire fallen victim to the vicious werewolves. He had no idea how it had all started so it seemed completely devoid of meaning to him. Wonwoo wished he could find a way to put an end to it. Once and for all. And just then, as if some magic force had heard his plea, a piece of paper fell into his hand. From the sky. Right there on a balcony in summer air. He was stunned but nevertheless, he read the words written on it, which said:
What you seek you shall receive Go to the golden mountain If you wish your heart to grow Be prepared a sacrifice to give Drink from the magical fountain May all bad blood cease to flow
At the same time but in a different place, a twin paper landed in Mingyu's tent. It was cryptic as hell and it might as well have been a trap. It might be something that the Jeons, those smartasses came up with to cause more damage to the Kims. And yet, he was in such need for peace that he wanted to try whatever it took to find a solution that would ensure a tranquil future for him and his family. He put a couple of snacks in a bag, a few bottles of water and went out into the night.
Wonwoo did a similar thing, gathered a bunch of essentials, only he was caught by his younger brother and sister.
"Where are you going, hyung?" Jungkook asked.
"Yeah, you're acting suspicious!" Somi exclaimed.
"I'm going on an adventure," Wonwoo said simply.
"Take us with you, oppa!" Somi pleaded.
"I have to do this alone. It's too dangerous," Wonwoo was firm in his decision.
"Promise you'll come back!" Jungkook insisted.
Wonwoo knew he shouldn't make promises he wasn't sure he could keep. But he owed it to his precious siblings to reassure them that everything will be okay.
"Promise," he said and walked out of the door.
A couple of hours later, Mingyu found himself in the golden mountain. He could immediately sense something was wrong. It smelled likeâŠdeath and decay. He sniffed aggressively into the air and seconds later he found himself pressed against a tree. By a stinky vampire!
"What are you doing here, Kim?" Wonwoo asked him.
"I could ask you the same thing, Jeon!" Mingyu growled. He tried to transform himself into his werewolf form and yet there must have been some sort of magic inside the golden mountain that prevented him from doing so. His suspicions were proven to be correct when he managed to escape from the vampire's grasp. Aha! He was slower than usual. Which meant he couldn't use his vampire speed around here.
"HowâŠ" Wonwoo was shocked by how quickly the werewolf had fled. "Why are you running?"
"Because you wanna drink my blood!" Mingyu screamed as he kept going.
"No, waitâŠI just wanna talk!"
"Yeah, right, and fish can fly!"
"Some can actually!" Wonwoo pointed out.
"Nerd!" Mingyu cried out and then he saw a big light in the air that said the exact same words in the paper! What even?! Something compelled him to stop running and moments later, Wonwoo hit his nose into the back of Mingyu's neck.
"Ow," he complained, taken aback by the fact that Mingyu was no longer trying to escape. "No way!" he had a similar reaction to Mingyu's upon seeing the mysterious words.
"Wait a secondâŠ" Mingyu started connecting the dots. "Don't tell me you received one of those as well."
He was probably taking a huge leap of faith but something was telling him that if the vampire wanted him dead, he would be dead already. Mingyu took out the crumpled piece of paper from his pocket and showed it to Wonwoo.
Wonwoo's eyes widened in shock and he pulled out an identical-looking paper from his own clothes.
"What are the odds?" Wonwoo laughed bitterly.
"SoâŠif we both want peace between our families, then I suppose we should work together," Mingyu offered sweetly.
"We might not have another choice," Wonwoo nodded reluctantly. "I'm Wonwoo, by the way."
"Mingyu. I would say nice to meet you but I'm not fond of lying," he tried to joke.
Wonwoo shook his head, amused by this encounter.
Seconds later, the sign in the air disappeared. In its stead was a golden door. Seemingly leading nowhere. Right in the middle of the mountain. How strange.
"Shall we?" Wonwoo suggested.
"Vampires first," Mingyu gallantly waved his hand.
Wonwoo didn't want to waste energy in arguing and opened the door. Mingyu followed him and the two were immediately greeted by the most beautiful creature they'd ever seen.
"Welcome!" you said. "If you've come this far, it means you've already taken the first step towards peace."
"Who are you?" Wonwoo asked.
"My name is Y/N. I'm a witch and it is my purpose to guide you through the seven challenges you must face if you wish to bring peace to your families."
"What kinds of challenges?" Mingyu inquired, suspicious of this whole situation.
"Well, it wouldn't be fun if I told you now, would it?" you chuckled mysteriously.
"How do we know we just won't get killed or something?" Wonwoo insisted.
"You don't. Guess you'll just have to believe that the possibility for a better future is strong enough to get you through these challenges," you explained patiently.
"Did you come up with these challenges?" Wonwoo wanted to know.
"So many questions," you laughed once again. "No, my ancestors did, I'm just a carrier of their will. Here's what I'll tell you. If you work together, you have a very good chance at succeeding."
"Not very reassuring," Mingyu complained.
"Still better than no chance," Wonwoo sighed.
"And if you complete the first six challenges successfully," you continued. "I will help you with the seventh one."
"I'm assuming the seventh one is the hardest," Wonwoo muttered.
"Clever boy," you smirked. "Are you ready?"
"Not really," Mingyu shrugged. "But let's do this."
"Well, good luck, guys. I'll give you a hint for the first challenge. If I eat I live yet if I drink I die. What am I?"
"Huh?" Mingyu looked at Wonwoo in a confused manner. "Any idea what this means?"
"No, but I don't like the sound of it."
You disappeared and in front of the two men, a wall of fire appeared. Great, so the hint was fire.
"So we just have to jump above it. It's not very tall," Mingyu observed.
"No, Mingyu, you don't get it," Wonwoo responded. "I will literally turn into ash if the fire touches me. I'm a vampire, remember?"
"Right," Mingyu nodded. "Well, then, hop on my back and I'll jump. I'm tall enough and I'll make sure the fire doesn't touch you."
Wonwoo shook his head hesitantly.
"I don't knowâŠ"
"Do you trust me?"
"Not particularly, no."
"Smart answer," Mingyu grinned. "But do you want peace or not?"
"More than anything," Wonwoo replied.
"Then, hop on."
Wonwoo did as Mingyu suggested and closed his eyes. In no time, the werewolf jumped and the fire was behind the two. Wonwoo opened his eyes and got off Mingyu's strong back. You had returned.
"Congratulations, you have completed the first challenge!" you greeted them cheerfully. "Keep up the good work and peace shall be yours soon."
"Well, that was easy enough," Mingyu smiled confidently.
"Easy for you to say," Wonwoo shuddered at the thought of fire.
"Do you guys want a hint for the second challenge?"
"Yes, please," Mingyu asked, guessing that since the first one was something dangerous for Wonwoo, then the second one would, logically, be something lethal for Mingyu.
"This is a type of color But itâs not yellow or blue Youâll need this type of bullet If a werewolfâs after you," you recited dutifully.
The answer was glaringly obvious. Silver.
"No," Mingyu groaned in fear as you vanished once again. The two somehow ended up in a room. There was only one way out and forward - a door at the end of the room. And in front of the door was a machine designed to shoot silver arrows. How fun. "What are we going to do?"
"Let me think," Wonwoo tried to analyze the situation in a way that would ensure Mingyu's safety. "If I run on zig-zag with you glued behind me, we might be fast enough to go behind the machine and open the door."
"But the arrows could shoot you?" Mingyu gasped in horror.
"I think they won't. The first challenge was designed to scare me and the second challenge is designed for you."
"It's very risky."
"Well, we can't let that stop us."
"Let's do this."
The two began running and surprisingly, the machine started shooting arrows their way. However, it was only capable of doing so in a straight direction, so it didn't manage to hit them once. With some great luck, Wonwoo and Mingyu squeezed themselves behind the machine. Yet, Mingyu was too impatient to grab the door handle, which, was, of course, made of silver. It burned his hand pretty badly but it wasn't lethal like arrows or even worse, bullets, would have been. Wonwoo immediately opened the door and pulled Mingyu with him to the other side.
"Are you okay?" Wonwoo asked, overwhelmed by a sudden concern for his werewolf companion.
"It hurts but I'll be fine," Mingyu tried to convince himself as well as Wonwoo.
Wonwoo quickly bit his own finger until a small streak of blood appeared.
"Drink this, it will help you heal faster."
Mingyu looked at Wonwoo doubtfully but went ahead. In no time, the burns disappeared and his hand no longer hurt.
"Wow, thanks a lot!"
"Thank me when we've completed all challenges," Wonwoo puts his hand on Mingyu's shoulder in a friendly manner.
You once again surprised them with your sudden arrival.
"Two in a row! You're really something else," you cheered them on loudly. "I was about to offer some healing herbs but the vampire beat me to it."
Wonwoo bowed dramatically, making Mingyu and you laugh.
"I won't ask whether you need a hint, because I'm feeling generous. Iâm often running, yet I have no legs. You need me, but I donât need you. What am I?"
"Ugh, another riddle," Mingyu was so done with them.
In front of the two men appeared a table. On the table, there were two cups filled with some kind of liquid. Next to the cups was a note:
"One may kill a vampire. Another may kill a werewolf. Drink all to move forward. Drink none to stay behind."
"I'm guessing one has vervain and the other wolfsbane. We drink the wrong cup, we both die. We drink the right one, we go to the next challenge," Mingyu started thinking out loud.
"What if I drink both cups?" Wonwoo suggested boldly. "That way I can ensure that you will move forward."
"Are you crazy?" Mingyu exclaimed. "First of all, there is no guarantee the witch will allow me to do the rest of the challenges by myself. Second of all, there is no guarantee I will succeed without you. Third of allâŠI don't wanna do this alone."
Mingyu sounded so vulnerable and like a lost puppy in that moment that Wonwoo felt so bad he cursed himself for offering something so dark in the first place.
"You're right, sorry I mentioned it. Do you have any better ideas?"
"Let's think about the riddle instead of rushing to poison ourselves," Mingyu replied. "I'm often running, yet I have no legs. You need me, but I don't need youâŠ"
"But of course!" Wonwoo shouted triumphantly. "Water! It's just a trick, Mingyu. There is nothing but water in both cups!"
Mingyu eyed the two cups suspiciously.
"They don't smell like anything," he pointed out.
"Do you trust me?" Wonwoo repeated Mingyu's question from earlier.
"Not even a little bit," Mingyu teased. Even though a part of him was beginning toâŠ
"Great. Drink up."
"Oh, what the hell." Mingyu and Wonwoo both grabbed a cup at random and downed them in one go. Nothing. No burn. No pain. No death. Just plain old water.
They both let out a sigh of relief and started laughing.
"We did it! We passed the third challenge!" they grabbed each other's hands happily and started jumping in circles.
You appeared yet again to congratulate them.
"You two are so smart, I'm genuinely impressed!"
Wonwoo and Mingyu let go of one another's hands, as if embarrassed that the witch witnessed a vampire and a werewolf behaving like this.
"How about a little break?" you offered.
"Not another challenge?
"Nope. Just a small something to reward you for getting so far."
Mingyu and Wonwoo exchanged a look.
"How do you plan to reward us?" Wonwoo raised an eyebrow.
"What would you like?" you smiled mischievously.
"Something more useful than those riddles," Mingyu asked.
"Okay, okay, no more riddles. Wonwoo?"
"Help us in the sixth challenge, as well. Not just the seventh one."
"Ambitious. I like that. Alright, then. Make sure you pass the fourth and fifth and I will give you a real advantage in the grand finale. Now, how about a snack to gather your strength?" you said and handed Mingyu a couple of big, juicy hamburgers. The werewolf gulped the first one hungrily.
"I'm a vampire, this is like plastic to me," Wonwoo complained.
"I know, silly," you chuckled and offered your wrist. "Come on, help yourself."
"How do I know it's not a trick?"
"Why would it be a trick?" you blinked at him innocently. "Mingyu already ate his burger and he's still safe."
"It's just a burger. I don't think the blood of a witch has the same value."
"Aw, I'm touched," you cooed. "Fine, suit yourself, then. Starve if you want."
Wonwoo shook his head, determined to reject the temptation.
"I'm not hungry."
Your smile suddenly transformed into a quite sinister one.
"Good. You just passed the fourth challenge."
"W-what?" Mingyu, who'd just swallowed the last bite of the third burger, asked in shock. "ButâŠwe didn't do anything, did we?"
"Wonwoo did," you explained. "The virtue of restraint is incredibly rare among vampires nowadays. Him rejecting my blood so easily shows that he is truly determined to achieve peace."
"ButâŠme eating the burgers is okay, right?" Mingyu kept worrying.
"It's okay, Mingyu, don't worry," you laughed. "Still, previous participants never made it this far."
"WaitâŠwe're not the first ones?" Wonwoo was shocked. "Others from our clans have tried these challenges before?"
"Of course. They all failed, though. These challenges are held once every seven years. SinceâŠsince the feud between your two families began."
"ButâŠwhy?" Mingyu asked.
"I'll tell you if you make it to the end."
"Is the fifth challenge a hidden one like the fourth? I meanâŠyou said we were having a short break, I didn't even know it was a test," Wonwoo complained.
"You asked for no more riddles. You didn't say anything about tricks," you pouted, the picture of blamelessness.
"Witches, man," Mingyu murmured, causing Wonwoo to smile. You didn't look offended by these words, considering the circumstances. Still, you were just doing your job, so you refused to feel bad for it. Besides, you genuinely believed that your actions would help them succeed. You wanted peace just as badly. For your own reasons.
Suddenly, the full moon shone brightly in the sky.
"Oh, come on," Mingyu groaned, as he felt overpowered by his transformation into his wolf form. It was more painful than usual and he experienced such intense anger towards everyone and everything. He wanted to ravage the vampire and the witch. Consequences be damned.
"Control it, Mingyu," Wonwoo tried to calm him down as he saw the werewolf approaching him and you like a predator stalking his prey. "It's just another trick. You have to show restraint, like I did. We're so close to success, don't give up now."
"You know what they say. A wolf can change his coat but not his character," you laughed maniacally.
"Stop goading him!" Wonwoo reprimanded you. "Mingyu. Remember why we're here. Remember what we both want. Peace."
It was like that one short magical word unlocked something inside the werewolf. His eyes that were full of rage seconds ago became full of warmth, kindness and hope. And in no time, Mingyu was back in his human form.
"Peace," he repeated, shivering, as the poor guy was naked after returning to his humanity.
You snapped your fingers and by magic, his clothes were back on him.
"Astonishing. I've never witnessed anything like this before," you were truly amazed by their willpower.
"I take it the fifth challenge was a success?" Mingyu wanted to make sure.
"Not only a success. It was your golden ticket to the grand finale," you beamed with excitement.
"So, what is the sixth challenge?" Wonwoo inquired.
"You'll have to fight each other. The winner gets to move forward to the seventh challenge."
"Excuse me?" Mingyu cried out indignantly. "We didn't go this far only to end up hurting one another, we're supposed to go through these challenges together!"
"You promised you'll help us!" Wonwoo was also flabbergasted by the turn of events.
"And I will, relax. I'll give you a hint. The challenge requires you to fight. That's all it says. Nothing about killing," you winked and once again disappeared.
"Damn, she's got to stop doing that," Mingyu complained. "So cryptic."
Wonwoo laughed quietly.
"I don't wanna wolf out on you," Mingyu confessed.
"And I don't wanna suck you dry," Wonwoo responded.
"So what now? How do we fight each other without harm? How do we decide on a winner to go to the final challenge?" Mingyu was panicking as he couldn't seem to find a solution.
"Look, there's the table from the cups of water challenge!" Wonwoo observed, surprised by its return.
"But of course!" Mingyu exclaimed. "We can arm wrestle. A fight without killing."
"You're a genius! Just don't break my arm, alright?" Wonwoo smiled.
"No promises," Mingyu teased and the two knelt on two sides of the table. Mingyu easily defeated Wonwoo and then they were confused that nothing was happening. No seventh challenge.
"Maybe we're both meant to win to move forward?" Wonwoo suggested. "Like you said, these challenges ought to be done together for true peace to be achieved."
"Oh! Right!" Mingyu took hold of Wonwoo's hand once again, not putting any strength into his grasp this time. "Go easy on me, night kitten."
"Right back at you, moon puppy," Wonwoo teased back and as Mingyu allowed himself to be defeated, a large sign lit up the sky, announcing the beginning of the seventh challenge.
"Grand finale, here we come," Mingyu declared in amazement that they'd gotten this far.
You greeted them as enthusiastically as ever:
"It truly is a wonder you made it to the seventh challenge, I can't believe the peace between your families is so close."
"It's too early to celebrate," Wonwoo, ever the realist, observed. "The final one is the hardest, no?"
"Yes, but I intend to keep my promise and give you a strong advantage. As it was hinted at in the piece of paper you received, you have to be prepared for a sacrifice. Only that will put an end to the bad blood between the Kims and the Jeons."
"What kind of sacrifice?" Mingyu asked, already anticipating the worst.
"A blood one," you stated grimly.
"You've got to be kidding me," Wonwoo rolled his eyes.
"We don't want to kill each other, I thought it was clear we came here looking for peace!" Mingyu cried out.
"I know you grew attached to one another throughout the course of these challenges," you nodded morosely. "However, the prophecy doesn't specify who has to be sacrificed. YouâŠyou can kill me, instead."
You gently placed two daggers in their hands.
Wonwoo and Mingyu were beyond appalled by your suggestion.
"ButâŠyou're just doing your job," Wonwoo murmured. "Why would we kill you when you helped us get this far?"
"Yeah, I'm with Wonwoo," Mingyu was adamant. "You didn't do anything wrong to us. There has to be another way."
"It's the only way," you announced, your eyes tearing up. "If you don't do this, you'll fail the seventh challenge and you'll be automatically turned into ash like all the previous participants were when they couldn't pass one of the challenges. Don't you want peace more than anything? I'm not important, just one life that could potentially save the lives of many vampires and werewolves. Is this not why you came here?"
Mingyu and Wonwoo looked at each other, weighing out the pros and cons. The witch's point was a solid one. But was it really worth it? They would have to endure the rest of their lives haunted by what they'd doneâŠWas it really peace if it was marred with innocent blood?
"I'm not doing it," Wonwoo decided and dropped the dagger.
"Yeah, me neither," Mingyu agreed and let go of the weapon.
"Even if you die instead by the design of these challenges?" you were amazed by their willingness to sacrifice themselves, to abandon their cause just to save her - a witch they'd just met.
"Even so," Wonwoo confirmed his previous decision.
"How much time do we have?" Mingyu wanted to know.
"I don't know. Like I said, no one's ever gotten this far," you admitted.
"Can't we try something else? These challenges were full of loopholes and tricks and whatnot. Maybe another kind of sacrifice?" Wonwoo kept trying to think of a way out.
"I've got some snacks in my bag? And water?" Mingyu suggested.
"I'm pretty sure my ancestors would not be satisfied with snacks," you chuckled bitterly.
"Be prepared a sacrifice to give Drink from the magical fountain May all bad blood cease to flowâŠ" Wonwoo repeated the last lines of the prophecy.
"We did drink from cups of water but there was no magical fountain so far," Mingyu mused out loud.
"That's true," you replied. "And there's the sacrifice and blood partâŠmaybe I'm reading this all wrong."
"What do you mean?" Wonwoo was desperate to hold onto any piece of hope.
You grabbed one of the daggers from the ground.
"Give me your hands," you urged them.
"ErmâŠ" Mingyu eyed you with suspicion.
"Quick, I'm not sure how much time we have left," your eyes were telling them that you genuinely wanted to help.
Wonwoo took a leap of faith and gave you his hand. You pressed the blade into his skin until blood started pouring out and soaked the earth beneath you. Mingyu figured he had nothing left to lose as he might be dead very soon and also offered his hand. You did the same thing with him. And finally, you cut your own skin. As the blood of a vampire, a werewolf and a witch started drenching the soil in the golden mountain, the three creatures witnessed something they hadn't expected. The blood started turning into water and soon enough a small fountain emerged in front of their eyes.
"The magical fountain!" Wonwoo exclaimed.
"Hurry, we have to drink from it!" you rushed them, the prophecy finally being fulfilled.
The three beings took turns taking sips of water and their bloodied hands were healed in no time.
"Does this mean we succeeded? We passed the seventh challenge and peace will reign between our families?" Mingyu was curious to know.
"I guess there's only one way to find out," you shrugged mysteriously. "Go back home and see for yourselves."
"You promised us something," Wonwoo reminded you. "You said you'd tell us why the feud began in the first place if we make it to the end. Here we are."
"Clever boy," you once again said the words from your very first encounter. "It's a long story, though. You sure you don't wanna check up on your families first?"
"Don't try to weasel your way out of this," Mingyu warned. "We want answers. We've spent long enough living in the dark."
"Nicely put," you laughed. "Very well, then. But first, let us sit down."
The three creatures sat in the grass and so, you began telling the story of how the Kims and the Jeons had started resenting each other.
"Once upon a time, there was a beautiful witch named Yunchae. She was not only as elegant as a flower but was also smart and kind and her whole family adored her. Tales of her beauty reached the vampire and werewolf families. Haneul the vampire and Kwang the werewolf fell madly in love with her. Yunchae, being so sweet, began spending time with both of them separately. She was unaware of dangers such as jealousy and genuinely considered both of them her lifelong companions. One thing led to another and friendship blossomed into love. One dark night, when there was a full moon, Kwang the werewolf wanted to surprise Yunchae so he came into her chambers earlier than the appointed hour. When he saw her embracing Haneul the vampire, Kwang, affected by the curse of the moon, was overwhelmed with wild rage and possessiveness. In his anger, he ended up tearing Haneul apart. The vampire had been caught unprepared and could not defend himself. Yunchae, in her grief, stabbed herself to death. Kwang, upon seeing his beloved lying cold and shaken by the consequences of his actions, could not accept the reality and threw himself off the tower where Yunchae lived. Upon hearing about the tragic turn of events, Haneul's family and Kwang's family began blaming each other. Yunchae's family was so distraught by the loss of their precious flower that they cursed the Jeons and the Kims to be in constant war unless representatives of the two families desired peace so strongly they were ready to risk their own lives. And here we are."
Wonwoo and Mingyu were silent for a while, trying to think of what to say. The story was so tragic but Mingyu wanted to lighten the mood.
"They were so stupid. Why couldn't they just have a threesome and call it a day?"
"Mingyu!" Wonwoo scolded the werewolf for his slightly inappropriate joke.
You cleared your throat, suddenly feeling awkward.
"Anyhow, this is all in the past. The curse should be lifted by now. I wish you all a peaceful life."
And with that, you vanished into thin air.
"Seriously, when will she stop doing that?" Mingyu groaned.
"She just did. Do you think we'll see her again?" Wonwoo was doubtful but had to voice his concerns.
"Who knows? Maybe we were all meant to find each other."
Mingyu and Wonwoo returned to their homes and they were relieved to find how things have changed. As if by magic. The werewolf Taehyung was freely chatting with the vampire Jungkook. The vampire Somi was holding hands with the werewolf Dahyun. Peace truly reigned between the Kims and the Jeons. Whenever Wonwoo or Mingyu brought up the issue of the past, everyone reacted with surprise. As if there was never any feud. It turned out only the two winners of the seven challenges and the witch who'd helped them get this far remembered the truth about the history of the three families.
Time passed and Mingyu found himself wanting to see you and Wonwoo again. Though dangerous, that one night he spent in the golden mountain was the most magical memory he had and he couldn't stop replaying it in his head. He wondered if Wonwoo felt the same way. Now that peace was established between the Kims and the Jeons, Mingyu could easily go to the castle where Wonwoo lived and ask him to hang out and maybe accompany him to the golden mountain in the hopes that they would find you somehow. Since the challenges were over, he had no idea whether you would still be there or whether you lived somewhere else, but it couldn't hurt to try.
"Hey! Psst!" Mingyu started throwing little rocks at Wonwoo's window in the middle of the night. He could smell him from a mile away.
"What the heck, Mingyu?" Wonwoo exclaimed in surprise as he came out on the balcony. "It's 1am!"
"I thought vampires didn't sleep!" Mingyu pointed out.
"We don't but I lost a very important game because of you," Wonwoo complained.
"Oh, boo-hoo. What I came here for is much more important," Mingyu insisted.
"What is it? Don't tell me there are problems between our families againâŠ" Wonwoo whispered, worried that something bad had happened.
"What? No, everything is fine. I just wanted to see youâŠ" Mingyu confessed nervously. "And ask if you wanted to find Y/N again. Go on another adventure in the golden mountain."
"Huh? But why? We passed all the challenges. Why would we go back there?"
"BecauseâŠI can't stop thinking about that one night. If it's just me, I'll leave you alone and go by myself. But if a part of you, even a small one, feels the sameâŠthen, please, come with me, night kitten," Mingyu begged, his eyes wide and moist with unshed tears.
Wonwoo didn't want to admit it but he knew exactly what Mingyu was talking about. His no longer beating heart was warm all of a sudden and he couldn't bear the thought of rejecting Mingyu's tempting offer. Still, he tried to play it cool.
"Whatever, moon puppy. Wait for me down there," Wonwoo said and hurried out.
When he faced the werewolf outside, Mingyu attacked him with a tight hug.
"I knew it, I knew it!" Mingyu squealed happily. "I knew you'd come! We're gonna have so much fun!"
"Gee, alright, relax," Wonwoo muttered but deep down, he was overjoyed to receive so much affection from hisâŠwhat were they? Once enemies but during the challenges, they had become allies, something like companions. But now that there was peace, what label could he put on their strangeâŠwas it friendship? Before he could come up with an answer, Mingyu grabbed his hand and led the way towards the golden mountain. Wonwoo couldn't bring himself to push him away. He wondered whyâŠ
As they arrived at their destination, they started calling your name but to no avail. With the challenges over, it was logical to assume that you went somewhere else. They should have asked you where witches lived before you'd vanished in that typical but super frustrating way of yours.
"What do we do?" Mingyu asked. "Should we summon her somehow?"
"She's not a demon," Wonwoo chuckled. "Do you know any other witches?"
"Nope. You?"
"No. How can we possibly find her?" Wonwoo sat down and touched the ground with his hand. Mingyu mirrored his movements. And as if the earth beneath them recognized them, flowers started growing and glowing in the dark!
"Wow!" Mingyu was in a state of disbelief.
"Incredible," Wonwoo stated and as the picture before them transformed into an image out of their wildest dreams, they finally heard a familiar voice.
"Looking for me, fellas?" you asked.
"Y/N!" Mingyu grinned happily and rushed into your arms. Wonwoo was more reservedâŠfor now.
"Hello there, big puppy," you laughed affectionately. "What brings you here? Don't tell me there's trouble in paradise."
"No, actually, we just wanted to see you," Mingyu admitted.
"Why didn't you show up rightaway when we called your name?" Wonwoo inquired bitterly.
"Hello to you, too, Wonwoo," you shook your head, scolding his manners. "How have you been? Very well, thank you. And you?"
"Hi," Wonwoo corrected himself curtly. "Now tell me."
"I couldn't hear you, so to speak. However, most witches are linked to the earth and your touch sent a signal to me. Does that answer your question?"
Wonwoo nodded but didn't press the matter further.
"Where do you live? How can we find you more easily next time? What do you do now that the challenges are over?" Mingyu started bombarding you with more questions.
"Whoa, there, relax, Gyu. Let's just say I know a place that can give you answers."
"Lead the way!" Mingyu replied enthusiastically as you took hold of his hand.
Wonwoo stood there for a couple of moments, thinking.
"You coming?" you wanted to find out.
Wonwoo followed you wordlessly. Something was off about him and you intended to find out what pretty soon.
You showed them where you lived - in a small cottage near a beautiful lake. You told them that they could come visit whenever they felt like it and Mingyu offered that you also come to the werewolves' camp sometime. Now that the challenges were completed, you spent your days creating spells and gathering herbs. It was peaceful and you couldn't ask for more. Or so you thought. As the three of you explored the golden mountain, you felt closer to the werewolf and the vampire than during the challenges and enjoyed the time spent together more than anything. You could tell that Mingyu felt the same way as he was very cuddly and clingy. Wonwoo, however, was more difficult to read. As morning was nearing and you were all exhausted from your late-night adventures, the three of you ended up sitting in the grass. You and Mingyu ate some sandwiches, while poor Wonwoo starved. You offered him your blood (no tricks this time), but he refused. In your defense, he said he wasn't hungry. Mingyu fell asleep with his head in your lap, so you took this opportunity to ask Wonwoo what was up with him.
"Why are you so cold?" you confronted him directly.
"I'm a vampire?" Wonwoo reminded you needlessly.
"Not literally, you dumbass. During the challenges, you were different. What changed?"
"I know the whole truth now."
"What are you referring to?"
"I'm scared, okay?" Wonwoo admitted. "What ifâŠhistory repeats itself? What if both Mingyu and I fall in love with you and we all end up hurting each other? What if this peace we fought so hard for is fragile and gets destroyed quickly?"
"It won't, I promised you," you reached out and held Wonwoo's hand gently.
"How can you be so sure?"
"BecauseâŠwe're here now and we're happier than ever. And besides, if we fall in love, we can do like Mingyu suggested our ancestors should have done," you joked.
"Ha-ha, very funny," Wonwoo rolles his eyes.
"I'm serious, though. Would you kill Mingyu if he fell for me?" you asked, already knowing the answer.
"No, he's my...friend," Wonwoo confessed, surprising himself.
"Do you think Mingyu would kill you if youâŠif you felt the same?" you kept up with the hypothetical questions, even though it all seemed very real.
"He managed to control himself pretty well during the full moon challenge, so, no, I don't think he would."
"Would I kill you? If you two fell in love with each other?" you teased.
"I don't know. Would you?"
"Of course not, my sweet vampire friend," you chuckled.
"Good. Then, I guess my fears were unjustified," Wonwoo felt more at ease.
"Yay! So, threesome?" Mingyu suddenly joined the conversation.
"Mingyu!" you exclaimed.
"Hey! I thought you were sleeping!" Wonwoo was taken aback.
"I was, but I kept having dreams about you two. Must have been because you were talking about me, weren't you?"
"Are we so transparent?" you groaned.
"Nah, it's just that I'm irresistible. Witches and vampires alike can't stop thinking about my puppy charms," Mingyu kept talking.
You leaned down to kiss him to shut him up. Then, you reached out to Wonwoo and gave him a kiss, as well. The werewolf, no longer in the mood to sleep, also embraced the vampire and touched his lips with his own.
"The sun will rise soon," Wonwoo observed sadly. "I have to go unless I want to turn into ash."
"The rules don't apply in the golden mountain. You're safe here," you explained. "You can stay as long you wish and leave when it's dark."
"How about the moon?" Mingyu was curious. "Why did it affect me if the rules don't apply?"
"It was just an illusion designed by my ancestors as part of the challenges. If you were here in the golden mountain during a full moon, you wouldn't have to transform anymore."
"Pretty convenient way to get us to stay, don't you think?" Wonwoo eyed you suspiciously.
"Mm, but don't take advantage of my hospitality. I'm totally coming over to check out your castle next time!"
"How did you know I live in a castle?!" Wonwoo was shocked.
"A witch never kisses and tells," you winked and disappeared.
"Man, not again!" Mingyu complained loudly.
"Just kidding," you came back and rushed into their arms.

OC LORE âą MAGNI AEDUCAN
BASICS:
Age: 27 in Origins, would be 49 in Veilguard if alive
Gender & Sexuality: agender (he/him when in Orzammar, they/them topside), pansexual & polyamorous
Class & Specialisation: two-handed warrior; berserker & reaver specialisations
Personality: aggressive, manipulative, ambitious, ruthless, dutiful, traditional
Alignment: lawful evil
Romance: Morrigan (long distance)
Main Parties: Sten, Morrigan, Zevran | Nathaniel, Oghren, Velanna
Status: Fate unknown
ORIGIN: ORZAMMAR'S TARNISHED PRINCE
Second son of King Endrin Aeducan, largely considered the favourite.
While heâs never had his own command before the origin, he has served with distinction in battles against the darkspawn and reclaiming lost thaigs for the past six years.
Had a Reputation for sleeping around, including with a married warrior caste woman that resulted in a bastard when in his early 20s. Upon finding out, the husband threatened to challenge Magni as a matter of honour, but backed down after realizing it was the Kingâs favourite son â when the child was born, paternity could not be determined as the child did not bear any close Aeducan features at the time. Magni never acknowledged them in this time, and the child was raised in the warrior caste.
As of the origin, Magni had two on-going sexual relationships - one with his loyal second, Gorim, and the other with a noble hunter, Mardy. Both knew about the other and sometimes it was even three-to-the-bed. Magniâs relationship with Mardy was more public, while Gorimâs loyalty was noted by Trian to be exceptional. (He was also engaged to a daughter of Lord Harrowmont.)
He was all but ready to stab Trian in the back anyway by the time Bhelen brought him the rumour that Trian was going to kill him, and I quote âhe recognises Iâm a threat. Good.â That just emboldened him to do it.
Does he regret killing Trian? No. He wouldâve been a terrible king (not that Magni would be much better, mind.) What he does regret is getting caught, falling for Bhelenâs play (though he respects it) and breaking Endrinâs heart.
Any popularity that Magni may have had died that day, even though Harrowmont and some other nobles had pushed to argue that Magni had been set up (maybe, he played beautifully into Bhelen's hand but it would've happened sooner or later.)
THE FIFTH BLIGHT AND THE AWAKENING:
Core choices: sides with the Templars but does not agree to Cullenâs request; Connor is killed; allows the werewolves to get their revenge over Zathrian; Bhelen becomes King and the Anvil is preserved; desecrates the Urn of Sacred Ashes; Anora rules alone, Alistair is executed, Loghain is recruited; does the Dark Ritual with Morrigan.
Magni inherently does not trust magic at first (hence siding with the Templars and choosing to kill Connor) as the Fade is such an alien and unsettling thing to them, as is magic as a whole. Theyâre also pretty hellbent on getting their own revenge on Bhelen and being powerful enough to do so, meaning they projected that onto others and influenced their decision to desecrate the Urn.
Orzammar is nothing short of a mess. Originally, Magni works for Harrowmont â the older dwarf offers to restore his caste should he become King, as well as reinstate the betrothal between his daughter and Magni, but most importantly, Magni wants to get to Bhelen. Essentially, he plays both sides, digging up what dirt he can find on both Harrowmont and Bhelen so that whoever becomes King will have to heed him. Heâs thriving. Heâs in his element.
And thatâs when Mardy finds him, chewing him out for getting her pregnant with their son just two days before his exile. Sheâs furious that heâs ruined her, that sheâs âused up her fertility on a casteless brat.â Mardy had a good life â as good as it could be for a noble hunter, anyway â as Magniâs mistress prior to the exile and itâs come crumbling around her. She pleads to his sense of honour and duty that he would have had as an Aeducan to help her. Now with a son to take into account and ultimately, being an Aeducan whoâd prefer to have an Aeducan on the throne at any cost, Magni elects to support Bhelen and does not intervene when the entirety of House Harrowmont is executed for their treason. He and Bhelen donât bury the hatchet entirely, but they negotiate and it is a start. Similarly, the choice to keep the Anvil preserved is because Magni believes the power it can bring is worth the cost of a dwarven life. Think of what they could reclaim with the Anvil still working!
Choosing to support Anora was an easy decision, and taking on Loghain was even easier. Magni had no respect for Alistair ever since Alistair made it clear he did not want a leadership role, nor power. Anora was willing and capable, and for a time they even entertained the possibility of a politically convenient marriage â to which Anora politely declined. As for Loghain, he was an asset. They would not waste decades of military experience. And Magni allowed Anora to have Alistair executed: after all, that is what you would do in Orzammar. The easiest way to deal with your potential rivals and to consolidate your power is to have them killed.
When Morrigan comes to them the night before the final battle with a way out, they consider sending her away. Not because they donât trust her, but because that it would interrupt their sacred duty. So she appeals to their sense of ego â Do you really think that Loghain would not take the chance himself to slay the Archdemon if you do not? â and reaffirms how much sheâs grown to care for them. And in the end, they cannot deny her. Even if they have their doubts about this old magic, to spend one last night with the topsider theyâve fallen in love with will be worth it.
Core DLC choices: allows Amaranthine to burn, defends Vigilâs Keep; spares the Architect; supports Avernusâ research; investigates Amgarrak; follows Morrigan through the mirror
Magniâs tenure as the Warden-Commander is aâŠ. Unpopular one. Any public approval he had disappeared following the destruction of Amaranthine, even with the Motherâs forces defeated. Similarly, the Amaranthine nobles had been treated poorly, some taken as hostages to ensure they could not move against him. When questioned about that, Magni simply stated that in Orzammar, theyâd just be killed outright â so be grateful theyâre being treated as âguests.â
They also allow the Architect to leave despite causing the Blight, being interested in its research. The same goes for Avernus. Their mistrust of magic is all but gone, thanks to Morrigan.
Magni resigns from the position of Warden-Commander after the darkspawn civil war. An Orlesian is sent to replace him, Warden-Commander Cecily Caron.
THE SECOND PARAGON AEDUCAN
Following their resignation, Magni returns to Orzammar to establish his nascent House following the Assembly unanimously declaring him a Paragon for his part in the Fifth Blight. Furthermore, their part in stopping the Darkspawn civil war, gaining military aid from Ferelden, and reclaiming KalâHirol granted Magni a great deal of popularity among the noble and warrior castes.
Bhelen, to his credit, welcomed his sibling back with open arms, and now regards him as an equal. There is no jealousy, only gratitude, and Magni makes it clear that while he will not go for Orzammarâs throne again â a Paragon is above a King, after all â he can act as both general and advisor. Under Magniâs command, the forces of Orzammar make significant ground after the Blight.
In 9:32 Dragon, Magni agrees to help Jerrik Dace in discovering Amgarrak, a long lost thaig that even Branka would not dare go. Jerrik wants to find his brother, Magni still focusing on wanting to reclaim more of the old thaigs.
Back in Orzammar, Gorim â now raised to noble caste alongside his former Lord, as well as his wife and child â took on the position of Seneschal for Magniâs house. Mardy becomes Magniâs official concubine, as her son with the Paragon (Magni the Younger) would be heir to the House, and later their second child the spare. His former warrior caste mistress even brought her child to meet their father â the Aeducan bloodline was starting to show as the child became older. He would never marry, instead reaffirming that his children with Mardy are his heirs â while still carrying love for Morrigan in their heart, and wonders about the child theyâd sired with her. Not long after Amgarrak, he receives a letter from Warden-Commander Caron â Morrigan has been sighted in the Wilds, and Magni leaves Orzammar to give chase.
Morrigan and Magniâs relationship can best be described as tempestuous and even after their reunion at the end of Witch Hunt, Magniâs sense of duty to Orzammar, their nascent house, their bloodline will not survive them disappearing forever, not while their heir is not of a majority. And they also know Morrigan cannot flourish in Orzammar, and Kieran needs to be topside. They let her go after a short time together, to meet their only child conceived out of love.
They spend the next two decades both together and apart, with Magni only spending time with Morrigan and Kieran when they can get away from their duties long enough.
When Magni hears the false Calling, using the research gathered from both Avernus and the Architect, disappears west to chase a lead into curing the Calling. They promise Morrigan that they will return to her and Kieran â for good this time, suggesting theyâre willing to give up their status and roles within Orzammar to spend what time they have left with them.
They are good on their word, but when the reaver and berserker madness starts to set in, they start spending more and more time away from Morrigan and Kieran, not wanting to harm them. He also spends less time in Orzammar as a result, thinking it better he stays away from his children too. He leaves Gorim as interim regent until Magni Jr becomes of age. Morrigan is trying to find a cure for it, hoping to save her love from a decision made nearly twenty years ago.
No one knows what happened to them. Some speculate they went to the Deep Roads to die, others think they died by their own hand, or had to be killed.

Chapter 24: Rules and Regulations
Rather than turn the handle herself, Rena persistently waited where she was, watching the handle turn, making certain it was the rays of a candle rather than the sun that fell on the floor.
Only then, holding Reinette closer, did she proceed through the door, padding into what seemed a large drawing room, velvet-lined drapes covering a line of three windows from floor to ceiling.
The fireplace was cold. Dust on everything. Books, tables, chairs, the abandoned piano-forte by the farthest window. Squinting, she could see an overturned brandy-glass lying on its cover, the blood from the vessel having been poured and long-since hardened over the instrument's keys; as if both keys and glass had been sitting there for a decade, alone in silence.
Mrs. Fulligan was waiting ahead, holding a handkerchief to her mouth, the candle in her other hand. Coughing, she beckoned with the handkerchief, leading them through the silent room, their footsteps muffled by the remnants of a thick carpet burrowed by mice.
"This wayâŠ" The housekeeper pushed against a set of panelled doors at the room's end, the dust continuing through two more rooms of abandoned elegance. Their destination was a narrow door tucked at the end of a hallway, its plain lack of panelling unexpected after the French-inspired elegance of before.
Removing a large iron key from the ring at her belt, Mrs. Fulligan turned the key in the lock and pushed. When the plain door did not open, she pushed again, using her hips this time. On the second attempt, the door swung open, its rusty hinges emitting a large creak that did little to alleviate any concerns about what Lucian had meant by the "east wing."
He may as well have said "the forgotten hole in the back-end of nowhere."

where the vampire has historically represented fears of the sexually predatory other, who becomes both attractive and menacing as norms around sexuality shift and eventually becomes "whiter" (less othered, less "old-world") as portrayal turns more sympathetic, twilight stands as a vampire-human romance attempting to uncouple sex and vampirism entirely. by having the werewolves and jacob specifically in the role of racialized other with threatening sexual appetites, the thing that replaces this association for the cullens is NUCLEAR FAMILY STRUCTURE. and let me be the first to tell you this uncoupling of sex and vampirism is unsuccessful. carlisle, the self-fashioned patriarch and primary enforcer of the social rules the cullens must follow, turned a dying and incoherent seventeen-year-old into a vampire and then became that teenager's father BECAUSE THERE IS NO OTHER WAY WITHIN THE SERIES TO CONCEPTUALIZE THAT ACT! edward is forced into eternal traditional family where the violation of being made into a vampire is reframed as a parental act. at the start of the series, all of the cullens save edward are in heterosexual pairings with their "siblings", while operating internally according to this nuclear structure. and, because of the positioning of the werewolves, this is intended to be seen as the "safer" option, sexually speaking. guys. guys. can anyone hear me. i haven't even gotten into how whiteness is the dominant force of twilight, which is to say twilightâs racism and sexism are emblematic of the same fascistic core ideas, which is to say twilight can be read as being about "becoming" white, where the violently enforced traditionalism i mentioned before is a method of upholding this, and i haven't gotten into this because literally where to even BEGIN. GUYSSSS
#it speaks!#ive been sitting on this for so fucking long guys. im trying to write a paper on it because its a fascinating entry into the vampire canon#vampires#twilight paper#<- for future use. GUYSSSSSSS#these walls are my skin

Radio static vibrated against the walls of the hide out spot, then silence as you shut the damn thing off again.
âShitâŠâ you mumble, throwing the device across the room.
Itâs been three days since the raid of those awful creatures. No doubt the rest of the team were dead by now.. especially after today.
The small and remote village you were ordered to investigate was somehow worse than the larger cities. Zombies? Those were easy. Quick to kill if you had good training and aim, both of which you and the team had. But nothing could of prepared you for them.
Straight from a fantasy tale, werewolves..or lycans rather, seemed to infect the entire village and its residents. Wasted bullets zipped through the air and not a single one fell to their knees, successfully mauling each of us one by one.
And a mutant woman with large black wings who, more conscious than a zombie seemed to rule over them. You knew she had something to do with all of this, but how?
Checking the last of your supplies, you decide it was either time to take your chances and be killed out there or die in this shed. Loading the rest of your bullets in the gun and throwing your backpack over your shoulder, you choose taking a chance.
You felt bad for leaving your teammates behind.
But you had seen what those creatures could do and decided to survive by running away. You were always like this though. Ever since you were a kid. You had to run away and leave your mother behind because she never saved you from that god awful man at fourteen. You wish you could have killed that monster too, but now you did it for a living.
The soft crunch of snow beneath your boots gave you something else to focus on, leaving the past behind and out of your mind as you walked.
There had been no signs of the Lycans in this area so you felt pretty confident wherever you were heading.
An old bridge came into view and gave you a sense of hope, anything to get you away from that village for a while would put you at ease.
WellâŠit would have if it werenât for the dolls.
Hundreds, if not thousands of them meet your eye as you crossed the bridge and into another patch of woods. On the ground, in the bushes, and many dangled from the trees as if they were hung. It sent chills down your spine at their appearance. Too life like as their eyes seemed to follow you and your body shook from something other than the winter air.
âJesus.. what kind of sick person does this shit?â You whisper under your breath.
Thankfully a clearing was up ahead and the sound of humming reached your ears.
Passing through an old gate, the source of that sound was coming from a large waterfall. And there was a house!
âPlease let whoever lives here be normalâŠâ you plead to yourself.
The outside looked well taken care of, the porch free of ice and snow. Small candles were lit by the windows, letting you know someone recently lit them.
You knock on the door a few times, taking a step back just in case. After a few minutes of waiting, you knock again.
âHello? Is anyone here? I seem to be lost and need some helpâ you call out, rubbing your cold hands together.
The door creaks open slightly and a woman, well.. rather a phantom looking woman revealed herself through the crack.
âOh thank goodness, I was-..â you begin your fake sob story before you were cut off.
âWhy do you have a gun?â A low and raspy voice asks behind her veil.
You pause to look down at your holster and internally curse yourself for not hiding it.
âWell.. for protection, missâ you reply matter of factly. The woman tilts her head for a moment before shaking it.
âNo weapons in the house. Youâll leave them outsideâ she whispers.
You didnât like that idea at all. She was a stranger, and these people already freaked you out enough that she couldnât be trusted. With a house as big as this one, there was no way she lived here alone either.
âIâm sorry but, I canât do that. They have to come with me. But I wonât use them inside I promiseâ you say firmly, locking eyes with what you assumed were hers behind the veil. She stands there silently for a few moments more before nodding.
She opens up the door more and motions you inside, the warmth of the house wrapping around your cold body like a blanket as you search your surroundings carefully.
This strange and dark woman had a strangely homey feel about her home, a stark contrast between both. Old, for sure.. prehaps even old money too. An inheritance maybe? She was definitely more well off than the villagersâŠ
âYouâre not from hereâ That low, raspy voice said. Not a question, she was observing you too.
You turn and give her a slight smile and a nod.
âNo. What gave it away? My accent?â You reply, not willing to give too much about yourself away to this woman.
âYour faceâ She answers, monotone as she tilts her head.
Yeah.. definitely creepy.
Something catches your attention down the hallway behind her, something small and moving. You couldnât make out what it was because it moved so fast, but the phantom woman seems to pay it no mind as she gestures you to sit on the couch.
She sits on the chair opposite of you, pointing down to the teapot and cups on a coffee table between you both.
It had been days since youâve eaten and your stomach rumbles in response before your mouth could.
âYes pleaseâ you say, and she delicately pours you a cup in silence. She also pours herself one but lets you take a few sips and you realize she must have just made it as it was hot.
The warmth felt good going down your throat, in turn warming your stomach. You hum in gratitude as you take another sip before setting it back down.
You look up at her, ready to ask her what kind of tea it was when a strange feeling hit you.
She was right next to the door when you knocked the first time..and made tea for two before she answered it. She hasnât taken a drink yet, and now the room looked hazy as your eyelids grew heavy.
Y/N.. you idiot! you think as your muscles began to go numb, unable to stand up from the couch as the phantom woman places her cup back on the table. You reach your hand out as you fall forward and crash into the floor.
The woman stands from her chair and rounds the coffee table to you and you unsuccessfully crawl against the wood.
âPlease..â you beg with a slurred voice. The room grows dark as your cheek smacks the floor.
