Notes on Dr. Ratio: Design, Philosophy, and Culture
Tumblr media
That's right, I'm back with another big thinkpiece! This time, I'll be doing a very long overdue analysis on Ratio and drawing notes to the real-life inspirations behind his character. I'll be having quite a bit of overlap with existing headcanon posts I've made, so if there's anything I repeat I apologize. I'll do my best to link the major posts I've written before as they come up!
I'll be splitting this piece into three different sections: design, kit and naming conventions, and miscellaneous (that gorgeous E6, his personality and backstory, statues, etc). So, without further ado, let's begin! This will be lengthy, just as a general note, and has a lot to point to, so the notes will be bulleted.
Design:
To start, Ratio has an overall blue and white theme. This immediately struck me as very Greek, especially since the colors in his chiton are of a similar shade to the national flag of Greece.
He has a modernized and modified version of the chiton and himation or chlamys, all of which are traditional articles of clothing in Ancient Greece. The chiton is the blue half with the sleeve, and and the himation is the white cloth. Both are tucked under a zone (the girdle), with it only partially hidden on one side. Usually the whole belt would be hidden under the folds of a chiton, but HYV likes their belts. An interesting note regarding the himation is that it's fastened on his left shoulder, rather than the right as it would traditionally be done.
The button fastening Ratio's himation in place is actually a Roman button! An example of one can be seen here, in the Met.
The sandals he wears are more of Greek origin than Roman, I think. It was hard to find the exact type or name, but this site points to several examples.
Naturally, the owl pauldron is a reference to Athena (Minerva in Roman mythology), the Greek goddess of wisdom and strategy. This is a motif that also shows up on Ratio's codex.
His hairpiece is a representation of a laurel wreath, which were awarded to skilled, accomplished people as a symbol of triumph -- though usually intended for victors of athletic or musical and poetic competitions (and for the Romans, martial victory), they have also come to represent academic success and achievement.
The column he summons in his Ultimate is a composite column, noted by the large volutes (reminiscent of an ionic order) as well as the acanthus leaf motifs similar to a corinthian column.
Similarly, acanthus leaves -- a popular design in Ancient Greece and Rome -- make repeated appearances on Ratio's outfit. We can see some sort of acanthus leaf with volutes on his belt buckle, acanthus leaves on his bracers, and also on the hem of his pants.
Throughout his clothing (particularly the flowy bits) we see endless vitruvian scrolls (also called wave scrolls) on his cape wings and the hem of his chiton. Though I didn't see anything suggesting symbolism, it was a very popular design in Ancient Greece all the same, and was thought to represent the Meander, a winding river in Turkey.
His alabaster headpiece looks nothing like him, but I wonder if it could possibly be modeled after Athena instead? The hair is long enough to be braided and curled into a bun, and it does look vaguely similar to some statues and depictions of Athena. It's hard to say.
He wears a signet ring! While the use of signet rings in academics is largely a tradition within the US and Canada from my research, they date back to the Bronze Age of Ancient Greece and were popular in Ancient Rome as symbols of status. Interestingly, Ratio wears his on his left middle finger, rather than his right (which would traditionally symbolize power and strength).
Ratio has a few gems on his person: an amethyst on his gold neckpiece (??? what is that thing, I still have no idea), and a sapphire or lapis lazuli on each bracer and sandal. Amethysts traditionally represent clarity of mind, while both sapphire and lapis lazuli can symbolize wisdom. Interestingly, all three stones have names of Greek or Latin origin.
Seriously, what is that neckpiece? It has wings that sit below the amethyst, and it occurred to me that it looks vaguely similar to a caduceus, with the chain being reminiscent of the intertwined snakes. It should be noted that the caduceus is not a medical symbol, as is commonly misunderstood here in the US, but rather a symbol of Hermes. It has associations with wisdom, eloquence, deception, and trade, which obviously don't all apply to Ratio as a character, but given his alignment with the Intelligentsia Guild/IPC and his role in the Penacony arc, it's interesting to note all the same.
His codex! This is actually a silly marble (??) version of a wax tablet, popularly used in Ancient Greece. Here is an example of a foldable wax tablet from Byzantine Egypt, but the general idea is the same. They were in Greece, too.
Kit and Naming Conventions:
First off, the man himself: Veritas Ratio. I've talked about this at length, so I'll link the most recent post on his etymology here.
His banner title, Panta Rhei. This is Greek for "all things are in flux," and attributed to the Greek philosopher Heraclitus. He was insistent on change and the idea of the world being in constant motion; that is to say, all things being in the process of becoming, but never realizing that final limit. This idea of people constantly changing and growing is something reflected in Ratio's philosophy as well.
Ratio's Lightcone is named "Baptism of Pure Thought," which is particularly interesting to his character. Baptism -- notably the act of immersing one in water -- is largely known as a Christian practice (which did originate in the Roman Empire!). While Ratio himself has never struck me as religious, it's obvious that his baths are an incredibly spiritual and sacred habit for this reason. It's cute lol
His Talent, Cogito Ergo Sum. This is Latin, and translates to "I think, therefore I am." This was most famously used in Descartes' philosophy. Descartes was a French philosopher around the tail end of the Renaissance, and is commonly associated with the rise of modern rationalism and epistemology -- both of these are central to Ratio's character.
Ratio's fifth Eidolon, Sic Itur Ad Astra. This phrase translates to "thus one journeys to the stars," and has its origins in Latin literature. Two noteworthy origins are Virgil, a Roman poet, and Seneca the Younger, a Roman philosopher and playwright. Given how he used to wish to reach for the stars (the Genius Society) and also quite literally travels among the stars, this is a fitting, if a little sad, name.
Ratio's (beloved) sixth Eidolon, Vincit Omnia Veritas. There's no literary or philosophical origin for this from what I saw. It simply means "truth conquers all," a nice, final declaration of Ratio's philosophy.
Miscellaneous:
Ratio's statues from his Technique have three famous real life references. I was unable to find the reference for the one where he's holding his book and lifting his hand up like he's giving a speech, but I saw some speculation that it was in reference to a pope statue. Nothing to really speculate on since I can't find a definitive reference. The flexing statue seems to be in reference to Arnold Schwarzenegger's famous flexing pose, which is certainly A Choice, but it does make sense given Ancient Greek celebration of physical fitness and athleticism. Ratio himself is also fairly muscular and fit, and in his backstory he was noted to exercise frequently on top of his studies, so depictions of said fitness is not surprising. The most important reference, however, is to the Discolobus, an Ancient Greek statue, which also ties back to the idea of athleticism and fitness.
That beautiful, beautiful E6. It's a direct reference to Michelangelo's David. Interestingly, Ratio seems to have quite a number of nods to Michelangelo. Beyond the amazingly lifelike statues -- which Michelangelo is famous for -- he was also known to be generally unpleasant and reclusive, which does fit with Ratio's personality.
The strongest and most important influence, however, comes down to Leonardo da Vinci, and doesn't have any direct references like the others. Rather, the ties to da Vinci come in Ratio's accomplishments, philosophy, and appearance. The both of them are incredibly skilled geniuses technologically and artistically, and have made countless inventions. Like da Vinci, Ratio is a polymath -- that is, a person whose knowledge spans many fields and subjects. This was a fundamental aspect of Renaissance humanism, which posited that humans are limitless in their potential and knowledge and that all should seek to better themself through education and personal cultivation. Through the idea of the individual pursuing their own development, humanists advocated for the autonomy, progress, and equal dignity of all people. da Vinci was one such humanist of the Renaissance; this is something I've said before, but it is absolutely fundamental to Ratio's philosophy and motivations. He is a humanist just the same as da Vinci. Given that Renaissance humanism was a philosophy revolving around the revival of Greco-Roman culture, it is no wonder that Ratio ties back to those influences so strongly as well. (As a side note, like Ratio, da Vinci was supposedly a very beautiful and graceful man, who had a particular fondness for animals.)
Overall, it's really interesting to see how each section can more or less divide his inspirations: his design being Greek, his naming conventions being Roman, and his personality and philosophy being the Renaissance, with only a little overlap. I've mentioned this in passing I believe (I can't find where I initially put it), but Latin overlapping with the Renaissance is actually a very fundamental aspect of education, given that Greco-Roman culture was seen as the pinnacle of philosophy and knowledge during that time in Europe, and knowing Latin was considered proof of a good education and social standing. All this is the reason why I argue for Ratio being a representation of the Italian Renaissance, rather than Ancient Greek and Rome on their own.
Honorable Mentions (not tied to the themes of his origins! Just fun things deserving of recognition):
Isaac Newton's apple in his idle!
Heart statue :)
Jojo pose statue
Jojo pose in his trailer thumbnail
I'll also plug my piece on his parents here, not because they don't tie to his origins but because they're not relevant to the analysis itself.

Character Profile - Scotland
Tumblr media
Character Name: Scotland. The Kingdom of Scotland. Alba. Alasdair Kirkpatrick. Alexander Kirkland. Alexander Kirk. Alasdair Kirkwood. Alasdair Kirkland. Uncle Alasdair.
Age: 10-12 upon the Roman invasion of the 1st century. 18-20 by 1300. Late 30s, early 40s modern day..
Height: 6'0/182cm.
Physical Description: Tall and musclebound, Alasdair was a warrior and his body still shows it. Broad-shouldered and strong-jawed, the transition from fighter to the financial brain of the British empire matches a large man with surprising grace and dexterity. He carries himself equally well in a boardroom as on a battlefield. The most classically handsome of his brothers but the least agriculturally valuable, he was locked in a triangle with his youngest brother and Francis for centuries, riding on his good looks for much of it. He also contributed much to his brother's children and added enough, especially to Canada. He made the lad damn near a strawberry blonde. He's getting a bit softer in middle age but still easily caber tosses the entire family on a human's strength if permitted. He's got a bit of a grumpy look to him sometimes, but he's also extremely tender-hearted if brusque with those he shares affection with, and those people know what his body language conveys, if subtly.
Eye colour: Blue-green-grey. A bit muddled and changeful like the churning clouds and waters of the highlands.
Hair colour/style: Red-brown curls. The shade of brown you can't tell is red or brown even in bright light. He wears it just long enough to show off the curl too it and often with a matching beard. Arthur is the one more often at sea, but Alasdair often looks like the quintessential seacaptain.
Other distinguishing physical traits: The family brows. Has a smattering of old war wounds that especially act up when he and Arthur are arguing. He and Brighid are also the source of the family dimples but Alasdair has to be positively grinning for them to show.
Personal Appearance/Style: A lot of sweaters, boots and trousers. When he put down the broad sword and picked up the abacus, he became quite interested in finer things and figured if he was stuck in this union with Arthur and Rhys, he might as well get something out of it. He's generally found in quite dull greens, browns and countrymen clothes these days but was once very fond of French fashion. He only wears a kilt on special occasions. Instead of having his own clan tartan or even wearing the national one, he most often wears a woad-blue and white plaid he remembers his mother having a cloak of.
Verbal Style: He can switch between various Scottish accents fairly well, lowland and highland alike. It gets thicker when he's speaking to Arthur to piss him off and when he speaks French because it makes Francis practically swoon. His Latin isn't a good as Brighid's in the modern day, but he's still pretty good with it; he learned languages as needed, especially as the sciences grew through history. Whatever the language of education is, he'll be fluent quickly. An interest in chemistry brought him to modernize his German; he's always loved reading in French.
Level of Education: This is almost impossible to quantify. He was the first country in the world to make education mandatory in the 15th century. He was meant from birth to be a warrior and he was very good at it with there hardly being anyone mortal who could challenge him sword to sword by the time he was as tall as the sword itself, but he was always in his heart more of a druid and a scholar. He's gotten so many degrees and learned so much over his life span its a little insane. And barring Alfred, he was largely in charge of educating Arthur's children. He's an absolute powerhouse at the sciences and maths but loves a good poem too. Physics, chemistry and pharmacy are his specialties and an incredible knowledge of medicine is still building in his head. He's also, of the British isle siblings, the best with money. Arthur is no slouch either but its Alasdair's running of the family money that they scrambled themselves out of poverty several times over before ever having any real international power. Once that started up, he was the real brains behind the money-making.
Occupation: Diplomat, surgeon, financial something or another.
Past Occupations: Doctor, surgeon, cattle raider, financial planner, merchant, trader, fur trapper, teacher, writer, artist, professor, soldier, crofter, farmer, fisherman, sea captain, shipwright, engineer, weaver, banker, etc.
Skills, Abilities or Talents: He's got the brawn to match his brains and is an incredible hand-to-hand fighter. He's a mental math whizz and has memorized almost everything written in Gaelic in the last 100 years. He knows practically all the major scientific disciplines back to front and their experiments and research patterns. He's probably more resistant to cold than Rhys or Arthur. Like all of his siblings,
Admirable Personality Traits: Innovative, resourceful, blunt, nurturing in a crabby sort of way, friendly, reliable, bold and practical.
Negative Personality Traits: Stubborn, impatient, grumpy, taciturn, reserved, slightly superstitious despite his incredible knowledge.
Sense of Humor: Dark, dry, direct, observational, sardonic, pawky.
Physical/Mental illness or affliction: He's probably the least mentally fucked of all his siblings, but that's not saying much. His liver is about as virgin as a dockside brothel. He's got a lot of old war wounds, but only a few bother him, and even then, he's not one to wallow.
Hobbies/Interests: Reading, engineering, hunting, hiking, caber toss, golf, building ill-advised machines with Alfred in the garage.
Favourite Foods: If its fried, he'll fucking love it. He might be the only person on earth who likes Alfred's food as much as Alfred's. He loves Cullen skink, cured meats and cheeses, kedgeree, cranachan, scotch pie or any meat pie, and he'll still pile on rowan jelly on porridge for breakfast. Whisky, of course.
Most important personal item: The torc and penannular brooch his mother gave him is in the national museum, and he has a kilt pin with a chunk of diamond Francis gave him in the 13th century.
Person/friend close to character: He's somehow close to his brothers, all things considered, but he's also on the best terms with Brighid, and they tend to talk more than Brighid does with the other two. He's very close to Arthur if only because they figured out they could control a lot more power and money if they worked together. An uneasy but extremely effective relationship there. And because the Americans will reblog and add a paragraph about how special Scotland is to America if I spent more than five words on Canada, Alasdair played an outsize role in raising Matt. but yes, he's very close to Alfred, who is fascinated with all things Scottish and has the same kind of brain Alasdair does. The Appalachian mountains used to have the same range as the highlands, and the way it was peopled rather shows it.
Brief family history: He was the second child and first son of Brigantia/Brittania in the pre-roman period. He's about 200-300 years younger than Brighid and maybe 400-500 years older than Rhys and Arthur. His relationship with his siblings is complicated but generally more positive than Brighid's. His brother's children are important in his life.
Most painful experiences in the character’s past: Probably the Jacobite uprisings and the rough wooing, and god, they're 2,000 years old. There's so much shit here. The civil wars? Elizabeth I hacking Mary Stuart's head off??? He's seen famine, plague, two world wars, and god knows what else.
Their Song: Julie Fowlis - Dh’èirich Mi Moch Madainn Cheòthar

I spent six years of my childhood in the developing world, where school uniforms were the norm (you only wore street clothes if you went to private school). It was a Roman Catholic girls’ school and we had overalls:
Tumblr media
--that’s a photo from the paper of some kids from the same school from like four years ago and the uniform hasn’t changed since I was there in the eighties lol but anyhow!
There was something that felt very genderless about our school uniforms. Maybe it was because it’s a girls’ school, so that stripped out a lot of the comparison between us and boys. Maybe because there wasn’t a strong sense of social pressure, since the school was in the city and none of us lived nearby (I lived rurally! On cane estate lands in fact). The expressions of personality we were allowed were very restricted -- earrings that fit the dress code, and hair bobbles/ribbons, that was about it.
In a way I do feel that going to girls’ school, being in a uniform for six years, got me to a certain baseline confidence level in who I was as a girl and the way I was allowed to express it. Girlhood was the same as personhood to me because all of my school peers were kind of in the same boat. Our bodies weren’t really the locus of self-expression because we all looked the same, so we decorated our books in varied fashions, found little niches of behaviour, even knew each others’ preferred shades of blue ink for our fountain pens. I was known for creating a prediction table of what our teacher’s outfits meant for the day’s activities (a certain tan dress worn with a red belt meant we were Getting a Test! I still remember it lol).
When we moved back to Canada and entered the public school system here, the other girls were fascinated and perplexed by our clothes. I was unselfconscious enough for that to not bother me at first, but this time we lived in the neighbourhood and I started hanging out with those girls and the socialization set in HARD. Clothes for school suddenly became hugely important and, curiously, when I moved from a grade school in a super-wealthy neighbourhood to one in a middle/lower-class neighbourhood, the pressure to be wearing the ‘right’ clothes increased tenfold. My identity as a girl became PROFOUNDLY wrapped up in how I dressed.
Lots of the time when I see discussions of school uniforms for girls they’re characterized as being symbols of control, or squashing of individuality, or sexually titillating. My St. Gabriel’s uniform wasn’t any of those things! I truly missed it when I had to switch to wearing street clothes at school. It had freed me up from having to compete with other girls and/or be concerned about fitting in with them; it was something I didn’t have to worry about amidst all the other stuff I was trying to figure out. It was a featureless container for the actual me, which was the important part.

Personal recap MK John Wilson Trophy 2022 - Men FS
First of all whoever is in charge of the camera work is doing an awful job - coloring shading horrible, cutting of heads in spins and change of angle midspin or like in ice dance not showing the faces at all for some - like c'mon we are used to not great camera work but I never thought it could get even worse.
Applause to the crowd, they were truly supportive!
Congrats to Daniel Grassl for winning the event! 🎉
Not a fan of Daniel Grassl but he delivered under pressure and I think he presented the program better than at Skate America. I don't know how he manages to jump with this heavy leg wrap, but he does it. His chances to qualify for the GPF are quite good (assuming Shoma and Ilia win the last GPs he should likely get in)
Thrilled for Deniss Vasiljews. Completely different demeanor than at Skate Canada. It's a beautiful program, he has beautiful skating. I really love this program for him. Congrats on your first GP medal!🥈
Shun Sato is back after all the injuries he went through this was a very good skate for him. I think his skating is not very emotive but I think he can evolve in that department. He still has his 2nd GP assignments to do, but qualifying for the GPF will be hard bc he would have to win against Ilia in Espoo and looking at how Ilia did and was scored so far that is hard. (Shun was so cute in the medal ceremony not knowing what to do 🥰)
Koshiro Shimada just has a wonderful free skate to The Artist. What Shun lacks a bit Koshiro has in overflowing quality. He can easily get the crowd behind him and he is so charming in his program. My favorite skate today tbh.
Tatsuya Tsuboi - I kind of have the same problems with Tatsuya as I have with Sota Yamamoto. He is for sure a good skater, but he is skates rather bland. He doesn't leave much impression on me. Shun may not emote that much, but still has tremendous jumps to impress and still goes through all his movements. Tatsuya's movement often seem unfinished. Ofc he has still just started in seniors, but it just irked me.
Roman Sadovsky - just heartbroken for Roman 💔💔💔😭😭😭😭 Sadly it's not surprising, he did the same in Nebelhorn - impress with a tremendous SP, but falling apart in the FS - but still I had hopes 😢 If Roman would find a bit more consistency he would be a frontrunner with his extraordinary skating skills and musicality, but this way it's just sad to see someone so talented landing off podium again and again and again.
Jimmy Ma is just fun to watch. He always brings such positive energy to the ice no matter if he makes mistakes or not. Really enjoyable skater.
Though I don't like Morisi Kvitelashvili much I am kind of relieved he didn't completely implode again but I feared in the first group that he would move up even more as how bad the rest of the group except Tatsuya skated. Not gonna lie that I am kind of relieved I don't have to worry about getting Morisi at the GPF...sorry not sorry 6th best free skate with 138 points also shows the level of this men event...
I think we kind of can forget about the rest of the competition tbh...

Transform Your Home with Custom Blinds in Canada: Perfect Window Treatments for Large Windows
When it comes to creating a stylish and functional living space, the right window treatments can make all the difference. Custom blinds, especially for large windows, offer a perfect blend of style, privacy, and light control. In this blog, we will explore the benefits of custom blinds in Canada and provide insights into selecting the best window treatments for your large windows.
Tumblr media
Why Choose Custom Blinds in Canada?
1. Tailored Fit: Custom blinds are designed to fit your windows perfectly, ensuring a polished look and optimal functionality. Whether you have uniquely shaped or oversized windows, custom blinds provide a seamless fit that standard blinds often can't achieve.
2. High-Quality Materials: Canadian manufacturers of custom blinds offer a variety of high-quality materials, including wood, faux wood, aluminum, and fabric. These materials are durable and designed to withstand the Canadian climate, ensuring your investment lasts for years.
3. Personalized Style: With custom blinds, you have the freedom to choose from a wide range of colors, patterns, and finishes to match your home’s décor.
4. Enhanced Functionality: Custom blinds offer advanced features such as motorization, smart home integration, and energy-efficient options. These enhancements can provide greater convenience, improved energy savings, and added value to your home.
Best Window Treatments for Large Windows
Large windows are a stunning feature in any home, offering natural light and expansive views. However, they also require careful consideration when it comes to window treatments. Here are some top options for large windows:
1. Vertical Blinds: Vertical blinds are a popular choice for large windows, especially sliding glass doors or floor-to-ceiling windows. They provide excellent light control and can be easily adjusted to allow for privacy while still letting in natural light.
2. Panel Track Blinds: Panel track blinds are ideal for oversized windows and patio doors. These blinds consist of large fabric panels that slide along a track, offering a sleek and modern look. They are available in various materials, including woven wood and solar screen fabrics.
3. Roller Shades: Roller shades are a versatile and stylish option for large windows. They come in a variety of fabrics, from sheer to blackout, allowing you to control light and privacy levels. Motorized roller shades are especially convenient for hard-to-reach windows.
4. Roman Shades: Roman shades add a touch of elegance to any room. They are available in different styles, such as flat, hobbled, and relaxed, and can be customized with various fabrics and patterns. Roman shades offer excellent light control and insulation for large windows.
5. Sheer Shades: Sheer shades combine the softness of fabric with the functionality of blinds. They feature horizontal fabric vanes between two layers of sheer fabric, allowing you to diffuse light while maintaining privacy.
Conclusion
Investing in custom blinds in Canada offers numerous benefits, from a tailored fit to enhanced functionality. When it comes to large windows, selecting the right window treatments can significantly impact your home's aesthetics and comfort. Whether you prefer the modern look of roller shades or the classic elegance of Roman shades, there are plenty of options to suit your style and needs. Transform your living space with the perfect custom blinds and window treatments, and enjoy the beauty and functionality they bring to your home.

Whatever style you want for your home, windows are one of the most important but often overlooked factors that can make or spoil the look you want. The right window blind can enhance your interior appeal and impact the ambiance, so it's not something you should do on a whim. Keeping that in mind, 3D shades or roman shades are one of the best window blinds in Canada for homeowners looking to spruce up their living space.
