Free Responsive Guidebook Template
I've wanted to do something to give back to the forum roleplay community for a while. The last couple of weeks I've been focussed on a private project, but when it came to working on the guidebook I finally had a ahah! moment where I knew what I could do.
Here's the result, a responsive tabbed guidebook that's got some super basic styling. It's HTML and CSS only, and the code is annotated throughout.
On small screens, the left sidebar collapses down to a dropdown navigation menu positioned at the top of the page instead.
You can find the template on my ko-fi page here. I would like to create an installation and set-up guide, but just need to carve out a bit of time to do it.
For now, I'm going to release the template out into the wild in the hopes that I might actually be able to read some of the fabulous looking site lore out there on my mobile. You can restyle it however you want, it's a base to be used. Enjoy!

It gets better for me with The Ninth World Guidebook (2015). It’s a lot more cohesive and approachable, I think, even if this is an expansion of the setting material in the main book, not a restatement. It reminds me a lot of the Glorantha Guide in the way the presentation is giving me slices of history, culture and social systems all at the same time in relatively digestible chunks.
The art is starting to really come together for me here. A lot of folks loooove the Numenera art. I don’t dislike it at all, but it doesn’t bowl me over or make my brain crackle the way other game art can. Here, though, some stuff does get me! Love that red knight. Some of the landscapes really work here. Some still don’t though, like the weird floating mask things. Stuff like that seems too random and takes me out. But then the weird folk who hunt humans are pretty rad, and well designed — they look unsettlingly alien.
I’m starting to find the fusion of science and fantasy more appealing here too. This one I am almost certain is symptom of just increasingly familiarity. Initially, I thought the tech seemed too…I dunno, New Agey? I have a hard time nailing this down. It still feels…violet. But I am OK with it. I’ve really come to like the robot designs.
But I dunno, am I sold on this? I’m not sure. I doooooo kind of want to read the proper Cypher System rules. I’m not going to rush out or anything — I still have Invisible Sun to attempt to comprehend — but if we cross paths, I might pick it up…

Okay, I want to just comment my opinion on the safety process subject that previous anon mentioned:
As someone who had their first experience with MCYT via Qsmp, I was shocked when the ex-admins revealed that they were forbidden of communicating with the CCs, even for just discussing rp aspects, because I always thought that was the bare minimum that you could do when you roleplay, specially before any heavy topics are involved.
Qsmp had a lot of very strong topics involved in it's stories and I was just impressed that only the CCs were able to discuss boundaries and if they were comfortable with stuff like ships with one another, when they would spend most of their live time with other admins as rp partners, and they were not able to do the same with said admins.
It explained to me why Ama didn't try to contact Tubbo in private before when entire confusion ordeal between him and Fred happened. Which shows that communication was key, not only for boundaries and the ability to manage heavity topics with the best of their ability, but also to keep the story and rp consistent.
Communicating with your rp partners before anything that could affect them or their characters is common etiquette in the written rp scene (where I'm from) that all of this it's... incredibly frustrating.
- 🧁
Yes to all of this, especially considering that for a lot of ccs, their egg was their primary rp partner that they would roleplay with almost constantly ?
Honestly when we learnt about how communication between admins and ccs was close to nonexistent it explained a lot of things for me, the Tubbo and Fred misunderstanding being one.
Even without talking about roleplay boundaries, when a streamer had an issue or wanted to know if something was allowed, their options shouldn’t have been limited to ask a child to use their « dragon magic » for answers or straight up shout a question at the gods in the sky and pray it would be heard
tldr : qstudios pick up a ttrpg or larp guidebook please

Deck Reviews: The Citadel by Fez Inkwright
WHAT IS THIS DECK?
Published by Liminal11, The Citadel: A Fantasy Oracle is a 60-card deck that focuses on fantasy archetypes to create cards and messages - and was made with a Dungeons and Dragons inspired mentality. A good understanding of fantasy archetypes will help you understand the cards in question, with those less versed in them might struggle. Some examples of cards are posted at the end of this post.
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE & QUALITY
The deck is beautiful even with a pleasant texture on the cards (specifically the black parts) and general feeling in the hands, but the imagery doesn't invoke very much for more visual readers, relying more on an understanding of the archetype and the guidebook in hand. This can be a problem for those who read more visually, though it's not a problem I run into with my reading style, so I'm fine with this personally.
The cardstock is strong and withstands shuffling well, at least overhand shuffling. The cards are shaped oddly for a deck though, which may make some shuffling methods more difficult. The cards are thinner length-wise, making their overall rectangular-ness more like a tarot deck than most standard oracle decks (which are closer to squares and are wider length-wise).
DECK STRUCTURE
The deck is split into four groups of 15 each, with each group functioning like an arcana. The four groups are: The Court (Fire), The Academy (Air), The Crowd (Earth), and The Troupe (Water). Each group also has some over-arching concepts.
It utilizes upright and reversed meanings.
GUIDEBOOK
The guidebook has a "setting the scene" style blurb for every card thanks to it's basis on archetypes/D&D, before going into a short paragraph style description for both upright and reversed meanings. Each set of meanings fits on one page, so they're not very long. They focus more on actions you've made or should make.
The guidebook comes with exactly 7 specially made spreads for this deck, though they can be used for any deck.
This deck also has an optional guide at the end about how this deck can be used as a tabletop roleplaying game creation tool. I currently do not play in these games (I wish.........) so I can't speak on how good it is. But it talks about building encounters and settings with the cards as an aide.
READING STYLES
The seemingly suggested reading style requires you to know and understand fantasy archetypes - When you see The Patron, you have to think of that particular archetype. This can be... a pain, for those not as into archetypes as others, or those who read visually. While the blurbs in the book exist, they are pretty stilted and don't provide very much and provide at most three possible ways to read the card, but most are more along the lines of one way to read the card. This means that without an understanding in the archetypes, a potential reader will struggle with this deck.
SOME CARDS
PERSONAL THOUGHTS & EXPERIENCES
My stance on this deck is very positive. I often use it as a significator deck, assigning every spirit I've come across to one of the cards, but it's obviously more versatile than that. Over the year I've owned it, it's held up well physically and in readings.
This deck also has great energy, being strong, passionate, and bold. A lot of care was put into this deck and that can be felt through the cards.
I just know it's not a deck for everyone, with the reading style requiring knowledge on archetypes.
(This is my first review! I'm learning, and if I grow as a reviewer, I may re-make this one in the future in which I'll link it here.)
#deck reviews#citadel oracle#fez inkwright#my tools: citadel oracle#This review has been baking for a while#I just finally got myself an excuse to say screw it and post it lol

Lockwood & Co tabletop roleplay project
All right Lockwood & Co folks, let's go apeshit.
I wish there was a tabletop Lockwood and Co roleplay, but none exists. So I have to create it (at least give a try).
-> Is there anybody interested ?
I would love to master a campaign in the Lockwood universe but for that, I need a guidebook. No fans has done it yet and I was wondering if I could find people to help me write it. It is quite a challenge, because it needs : characters sheets, ghost bestiary, lore, a few plots, etc.
There'll be at least a english version and a french version because I'm french B)
It'll be a fan project, no money invested, the guidebook PDF will be free for everyone.
In short, I was wondering if there were fans as crazy like me in here. Please contact me or comment this post

Can I ask what "ICC" and "3-3-3" mean in your rules and guidebooks?
ICC means "in-character chat" - but in effect, it just means a rapidfire RP, where the players all dedicate a few hours to quicker, back-and-forth roleplay. We have some discord channels and some external chatboxes (on CBOX) dedicated to this form of roleplay. Of course, you're not required to use it - plenty of people/RPs use classic threads without the timing pressure!
3-3-3 is an older forum rating system referring to the types of content we allow on our site. A reference chart is here, but in our case, 3-3-3 means we allow swearing, sexual content, and explicit violence. However, RP containing sensitive/mature content do still require CWs for the benefit of our members (as described in the rules).

By way of introduction-
Those who know me likely know me from my showing at the House Games on behalf of the House of Water, or from my time at the Karrakin Cavalry College.
I am proud to confirm that yes, during my time on Karrakis I have been in contact with my former minor house and have been formally readopted into House Montague, ending my formal exile from the House of Glass and thus my citizenship of the House of Water.
As many of you well know my exile had never been a matter of my actions but rather the results of my father's actions when I was a child- it was never my fault that he decided to turn traitor and smuggle valuable resources to the Ungratefuls nor was it a thing I supported by the time I became old enough to know what this means. However, the House had deemed it inhumane in their wisdom to separate children from their parents, and so I was sent into exile as well.
I consider this change to be an acknowledgement in my agency as an adult now that it has become clear that I have not followed in my father's footsteps. For all my exile had me formally represent Umara, I remained in my heart a daughter of House Montague and the House of Glass. I thank the House of Water for housing me in my absence, even as I bid them farewell.
With this change I have decided to make an official account here as well as elsewhere, especially as I have been additionally given a position on Les Fulgurites on track for leadership, and it would suit me to have an official presence.
((Or- this is a RP blog for my Shadow of the Wolf PC, Nera-Montag, set right after her graduation from the KCC. You can refer to the person running this account (as well as @cb-patches) as Pen (main at @drabasp, any/all pronouns. This character also uses @voiceofthewolf, as part of an in-character bit involving making multiple alt accounts to vent her frustrations/opinions without showing her ass in public. I could only be fucked to run the one, however.
Additional note- Nera is a remarkably weird (even in context, ask me ooc sometime and I'm extremely willing to break it down for you and I might even be able to do it with a sub-1 number of Seth Dickenson references) conservative who is interested enough in playing the political game to pretend to be a moderate. I, Pen, am a communist. I do not endorse her political opinions, I am engaging in this roleplay because I read the KTB guidebook front to back on first sitting and became entranced with the specific nexus of nonsense that undergirds Karrakin conservatism. I think the kind of person who internalizes and engages with that has the potential to be very interesting in a fucked up and evil kind of way. This is all to say: I do not endorse the opinions given in character here, and I am willing to engage in conversations OOC to clarify what my IRL opinions are if you're worried you're actually engaging with someone this bad.))

Here is our final buzz before opening — a look at our app form and census ! Lux et Tenebrae will be utilising a profile/freeform application combined with a built-in shipper within your main profile ( which also features a built-in thread tracker ) in which will complete our registration process. After acceptance, you will then post your census ( which acts as a compendium of all your characters as well as directory ) and plotting may began. You can find specific information regarding character creation from our guidebook beneath the cut !
THE BASICS
Please register with a first name, middle initial and last name in proper case ( for example: Regulus A. Black ). Duplicates of names are not permitted at Lux et Tenebrae at present time.
Members do not need to make an ooc account.
Please make sure that your alias is not already taken by referring to our site census.
CHARACTERS
All characters must be 21+. Younger characters may appear in threads and applications as npcs.
Alongside our canons, original characters are permitted here at Lux et Tenebrae. However, their lore must not interfere with canonical information found within other characters, families or the world as a whole.
Communication is necessary if picking up a wanted ad. All characters based on wanted ads or related to existing families must be approved by the writers of the wanted ads or family members already on - site. We encourage communication during the application process to ensure that your character fits the existing site canon for the wanted ad or family.
You may not write two characters who are immediately related to each other or who are closely connected, plot - wise to each other. If you are not sure what qualifies as close connections, please reach out to the staff to ask.
If you are creating a foreign character, please be respectful towards the cultures and history you are depicting and do your research of their country of origin, naming customs, etc, prior to application.
If making changes to your character after they are accepted ( ie. changing their name, faceclaim or any large and important changes to their freeform ), please run it by the staff.
Faction members will be scrutinized more during the application process. These member groups will be under intensive review as the staff wishes to ensure that the lore is understood and not misconstrued or changed in any way that otherwise influences the overall group lore. You may choose to reach out to a staff member via opening a ticket to run any ideas you may have by us beforehand.
Your first three characters are free. After that, you must have a total of ten ic posts per character ( threads, not letters ) to pick up a new character. Members may only pick up a total of six characters ( unless otherwise authorized ) and none of the current characters should be inactive upon application of a new character.
FACECLAIMS
Faceclaims must be 21+ and within ±5 years of the character they’re portraying unless otherwise approved by the staff. For characters over the age of 65, faces may fall within ±10 years of their portrayed character.
Faceclaims must be an industry professional such as an actor, model or musician. Please do not use pictures from when the faceclaim was under 18 and do not use anyone who holds a criminal record, is deceased or has asked that their likeness is not used for roleplay.
Please ensure that the faceclaim chosen matches the family ethnicity if necessary. If there are no family members in play, please be sure the consider the options for their casting.
REGISTRATION
Lux et Tenebrae utilizes a profile application combined with a shipper in which completes our registration process.
The shipper portion of the application is expected to provide a summary and fill in any blanks ( if your freeform is not an informative bio ) as well as outline an overview of potential character relationships. This can be in the traditional format ( friends, enemies, and lovers ) and/or include plot hooks, which describe roles or relationships your character is looking to have filled. The shipper is the tab labeled 'Addendum' of your main profile and is filled out in its corresponding field within your user settings. The freeform or application section is located in the 'Biography' tab of your main profile and should be submitted in the corresponding freeform area within your user settings. It typically covers a biography of your character and can be in any format you choose — short narratives, snapshots of your character's history, or even something more elaborate. It has a minimum word count of 400.
All necessary graphic dimensions are located in your user settings but are as follows:
Profile images ( user control panel ) should be 500px by 900px. Post avatars ( user control panel ) should be 500px by 900px. Post and board icon ( avatar settings ) should be 300px by 300px. If you are in need of assistance when it comes to creating these images for your character, please see the #graphics channel in our discord and a staff member will provide them for you.
Once you have completed filling in all your profile information, its freeform and shipper you may then submit your character for review in our #submit channel on discord. When approved, you will then be required to post your census and plotting / threading may begin. Applications typically take between 24 to 48 hours to review. Applications involving subplots or requests or wanted ads may take slightly longer case dependent.
Member group colors will appear upon acceptance.
After you are accepted, make sure you have posted in all the necessary claims areas. These include your Census, Master Claims, Canons, Occupations, and potentially Factions as well as Species if possessing an applicable character associated there. There are also optional claims in Abilities & Skills.
Please see our discord channel #moderation for requesting a development board for your characters, archiving threads, census cleanout, etc.
