Sprite Collection: Series 2

It's been a bit since I last posted Role Reversal stuff, and I decided to work on some more sprites, specifically for Whirlpool!

I had an idea when I saw your drawings of the past beats/fallen hero’s, the idea is mostly like an ancient beast swap, but instead of the beats actually corrupting they ask the witches for a new chance feeling they can’t take their roles anymore so that’s how they get into beast yeast into a slumber, and for most of the story in cookie run kingdom to stay the same but white lily is the first corrupted ancient only for the rest to follow so the soul jams could break and become purified and sending the ancients into a slumber as the beats wake from their slumber to see the destruction of earth bread, just an idea though, it could be explained or expanded on.

It feels like something highly unlikely with how devoted the fallen heroes are to their roles and duties. They'll be incredibly burnt out but they'll still do what they have to until everything breaks down completely. Buuttt, ,, I do really like the thought of ancients corrupting. If the fallen heroes or. The Five Saviours as I call them in Past Beasts AU were to ever recline from their duties it would be somewhere at the start of their supposed corruption. They'd realise that... Well. Things aren't going nearly as they're supposed to. They're all weary and tired, their duties bore or disappoint them. They just... They need a break. Cookies are doing well, right? Nothing would happen if they left for a few years... After all, surely all this work they've done, it wouldn't be in vain! All of their teachings and guidance, Cookies have recorded all of it, to be passed on for eons to come!

So. They'd ask the Gods to have their rest. The souljams would likely stay with them, given that this power should NOT be just given around. And so would begin their break. If it comes around to the beasts, their sleep would last for at least an eon. They were assigned a specific place in the land of Beast-Yeast, where they rest their weary souls, guarded by the Faeries, destined to return when the world needs them most.

At some point, others would realise that Cookies... Well. They're not doing too well. Without the sudden guidance of the five saviours, the world would slowly begin to deteriorate. The Cookies have been incredibly reliant on their heroes, and without them the world becomes darker. Sure. The Five Saviours would try and prepare them for their absence, but seems like it wasn't enough after all. So, a decision would be made. To give the souljam to another set of five cookies. Ones worthy of their title of souljam bearers, the purest of the purest.

They would be the ones to substitute for the slumbering Five Saviours. They would become the Five New Heroes. Bestowed with a part of the original souljams,

They would become the pillars that will now support the Cookiekind.

Problem solved. The Cookies will no longer suffer! They've new heroes to rely on. Not the same, not nearly as influential, sure, but they'll be there to help.

Alas.

Even the purest of souls crumble when faced with such unimaginable power. One by one, they all began to corrupt. Apathy, Greed, Ignorance, Irrationality, Supremacy (Iiiiimmmm gonna have to work more on those. They're temporary for now.). The chosen ones have become fallen. They no longer obeyed to their duty, no longer were a support. They plunged the world into chaos and discord.

The light of freedom, White Lily Cookie, right before her imminent corruption, has split into two after a certain incident, one part of her remained pure, uncorrupt, while the other fell even lower. Alas, without her light, White Lily Cookie was unable to stay awake for the corruption of her dear friends.

One day, she will awaken, and with her, The Five Slumbering Saviours.

Thinking about Deltarune and how it plays with gender roles made me think about something; when people insist on assigning binary gender to the protagonists, I’ve noticed people usually treat Frisk and Chara as “girls” and Kris as a “boy”. I’ve seen vanishingly few instances where it’s the reverse. I wonder why that is

I've noticed the same thing! I remember occasionally seeing chara referred to as a boy back in 2015, but otherwise it's extremely consistent. I think it's due to a combination of things- one that frisk somewhat resembles madotsuki from yume nikki, so maybe early reviews or playthroughs that came from indie gamers assumed frisk was also a girl and it caught on. I have no way to verify this but it's what I personally always thought. there's also the fact that treating frisk as a pure self-insert was extremely common even after finishing the true pacifist route, and most of the younger members of the undertale fandom were teen girls (or at least they were girls then. many of them are not girls now lmao). so there was a really large community of portraying frisk not just as a little girl but a young woman, usually to be shipped with sans (cuz y'know sans was a hot commodity back in the day). and finally, and probably the most influential reason- undertale came out just after the rpgmaker boom of the early 2010s. and when you think about classic rpgmaker games that involve a young, vulnerable and often voiceless child exploring a dangerous environment (ib, the witch's house, mad father, and again yume nikki, among others), what do most of them have in common? yup, all the protagonists are girls. so I think for people who didn't have being nonbinary as an option at the front of their minds, it would be far more likely to assume frisk was a girl too and not give it a second thought.

(edit: I'm an idiot the most obvious answer is just that frisk has long hair. like it would be considered long on a boy I mean. and people assume any hair length past the ears = girl, so like of course people would see frisk as a girl. and you could argue that kris has longer hair too but still gets seen as a boy, but kris has kind of that emo teen thing going on which is one of the circumstances you might expect a boy to grow their hair out in. and generally younger kids don't have as much freedom with hairstyles.)

as for kris I think it has much more to do with assumptions of gender roles in a story, which is part of why I harp on it so much. in the light world, kris appears to be a depressed loner in a fashion more commonly associated in media with teenage boys. in addition, in their sprite their upper body appears somewhat wider than their legs and hips. in the dark world, kris is dressed as a knight, a traditionally male role, and is the silent leader commanding a party, also a traditionally male role (in JRPGs). given those things I think it's much more likely this was deliberate on toby's part, since he already knew players would leap to label a genderless protagonist as "one way or the other" and there isn't really a way to design a character that is able to convince a lot of people otherwise. so like, might as well use that as part of the meta. (I THINK, anyway. obviously I don't know for sure. I could be totally overanalyzing all this)

Hey hey! Yeah ive noticed when it comes to actual toxic shadowvanilla (or even closer to cannon) they dont get in depth of it. It feels like theres something MISSING! Ackkkkkkk i am a beliver of them being mutually toxic to each other (especially tr) If TR did for some reason truly became a cookie of decite, it would not end well for either of them! Think about it, shadow milk wants someone who understands BUT how he wants Pure vanilla to be a cookie of decite. And and shadow milk so caught up in his joy didnt even notice the cannon betryal, then take that and up it with truthless recules. Tr would 100% be lying for his own gain, probably notice shadowmilks emotional weakness and twist it like a KNIFE! The roles would be reversed! Shadowmilk is the puppet now, yet he doesnt KNOW it! So blinded by his loneiess, and the need to have someone to understand him! That he allowed himself be used (quite ironic if you think about it) cuz PV normally is not one to show his emotions in his sprites (other than his staff and well shadowmilk meddling) AND HE ISNT A OWO MAN!!! Sick of the owo man treatment! TR is that but UPPED!! A cookie of decite who doesnt express his emotions, able to twist it however he likes. Like i can see this as a Sm thinks hes the puppet master, while being the puppet. Tr lets him think that!!! Its easier to maulipate someone if they think their in control. Its MESSY! (I cannot put into words how messed up this situation would be) shadow milk you FOOL! Youve created your own MONSTER! One who sees you as a means to a end, a PUPPET. I'm so happy right now because you UNDERSTAND that PV isn't just some fucking UwU bean guy. Like, this is why he's so fucking good at being a leader because of his EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE and that he DOESN'T get caught up by his emotions and focuses on the problems even if it's stressful. Like a scene in Odyssey where Dark Cacao gets MAD when Clotted Cream had the idea of wanting the powers of the Soul Jam but Pure Vanilla remained calm as ever(And all of the sprites used this scene have his eyes open. He is SERIOUS.) Out of the WHOLE Ancients, despite his youthful, brighter amd unchanging appearance (and that's why his Korean Va is a girl to convey his youthfulness) he is the nost mature because he tries to Understand the situation and not diving head first. He isn't a warrior, but he is skilled involving emotions BUT he keeps DOUBTING himself at first like "I can't believe I did that! But I'd do anything for my friends to protect them."

AND THEN SHADOW MILK COOKIE COMES IN!!!! Omg Shadow Milk Cookie, DO NOT unlock the full potential of that Skill Pure Vanilla- I man Truthless Recluse has(Emotional Intelligence😇 LEVEL UP! ➡️ Emotional Manipulation😈) that he made you look stupid by making YOU think that YOU are the one IN CONTROL!

That's why I kept mentioning that PV is KIND, and not Nice and he is pretty much capable of incredible violence. As much as people love to draw PV hugging Smilk closing to the end of the Ep, he literally beats him up and people seem to forget that over thinking PV is nice Uwu It doesn't have to be this way Shadow Milk Cookie. Meanwhile in the Korean version, Awakened PV had a dialogue that went, "I like helping people but I had enough of your shit Shadow Milk Cookie.☺️" Pure Vanilla Cookie said calmly. (Link to the video I made with this line.) And then made shooting stars of Truth descend from the sky to attack him. He did say he wanted Smilk to be his friend, but he wouldn't back down in a fight anymore. That's why his Awakened "Compassionate" or "Comprehender"(in Korean) form finally showing his real role that he is a MAGIC TYPE all along who has been disguised under the role of a HEALER.

Anyway TR ♤♤♤♤♤♤♤♤ SMILK. TOXIC YAOI REAL!! Two Cookies of Deceit. One emotional and one empty. Smilk may be the best at psychological warfare and torture, but he got himself an emotional manipulator. Tr easily takes advantage of his emotions because he acts like a child!! Even with my interpretation of canon that Tr won't last long with Smilk because of the Friendship Gang and "the universe couldn't allow this! One of you turn "good" now!", I like to think the toxicity still lives through Awakened PV since he's both Truth AND Deceit. Like a bright star from light years away that's actually dead, he could still act as of he were still TR to make Smilk more paranoid and obsessed with him in a more fucked up secretive way that other people wouldn't even notice because PV is already good! He wouldn't do evil things again, right? Hehe.

Uhhhhhhhh Sburb AU!! This was more of an excuse to classpect and make sprites, so don’t ask me questions about plot details because I put like zero thought into it. Tsumugi probably had something to do with setting up the session, and she’s hiding her real title and the fact it’s not her first session. Baby Kiibo is a robot baby because I thought that was the funniest option.

Classpect thoughts under the cut if you really want:

Immediate caveat: I mention speculative stuff here like unconfirmed active/passive class pairs and inversion theory. If you don’t like those things or otherwise disagree with the titles I gave people that’s fine but just know I’m not super interested in debating about it and won’t reply.

So, to start out with I wanted to make the 8 of them a session, so I needed no overlaps in class or aspect and one Time + one Space. I also wanted to have Kaito and Kokichi as opposing aspects. In general, I think of a Title as kind of the end of your assigned character arc, so depending on your level of maturity/introspection at the start, it can seem either really obvious or really unintuitive. I tried to base them off of the hypothetical chapter 6/survivor versions of characters, since those (plus maybe the chapter 5 deaths) of the ones that get a full arc in DR canon.

Immediately Tsumugi seemed like a deadringer for Space, not so much because of the literal physics-related stuff but because of its associations with creation/narratives and setting things up for other people to act. I made her Sylph of Space here, but that's a facade. She's actually a Muse of Space who participated in past session(s) and wants to watch how things play out.

Based on the Extended Zodiac description, Kaito or Kaede has to be time, but Kokichi CANNOT be Space by any stretch of the imagination. I made her Heir of Time with the interpretation of Heir as someone who invites change/influences of/through their aspect. Time is also associated with music and death, which is both fitting and a little mean. (I can also see Kaede as Breath outside of having to have someone be Time.)

So moving onto Kaito and Kokichi, I was considering Hope vs Rage (belief vs doubt, possibility vs restrictions), but 1) Rage is defined partially by hatred of lies despite otherwise sounding Kokichi-ish (that alone could be interesting, with the possibility of a negative/reverse title or else giving him Hope and Kaito Rage for the unexpected swerve........) 2) I really wanted to give Hope to Kiibo. So instead I went with Heart and Mind (emotion vs logic, intuition vs planning, identity/motivation vs action/decisiveness).

Kokichi is Thief of Mind for taking away other people's decisions for his own purposes but also for generally "stealing" things (e.g., the Mastermind Role, narrative importance in general, along with literal items) through his own cleverness. Vs Kaito, a Knight of Heart, who uses his constructed identity as a weapon to face challenges. I'm also a fan of inversion theory, so I think at low points they'd both trend towards Page of Heart (grows powerful late in the narrative based on his own ego/identity) and Rogue of Mind (taking choices/agency/logic away from people for their own good), respectively.

I always wanted Kiibo to be Hope since 1) Ult. Hope Robot 2) big on possibilities/faith but can be a little self-centered. I went with Bard at least partially to make a "guess we know whether he has a dick or not now!" joke, but I also think "inviting destruction through Hope, inviting destruction of (false) hope" is pretty spot on for chapter 6 Kiibo. Like, as the camera/audience surrogate, he's been forced into passively leading the others to despair, not to mention how the audience takes him over to destroy the hope of ending the show. But Kiibo ends up reversing this and helping destroy the audience's faith in Danganronpa, destroying the whole academy in accordance with the vote. (Sidenote: I wonder if Kiibo gets taken over by Horrorterrors and goes grimdark? Or if he's just really, really susceptible to orders from his Exile)

Shuichi, Page of Void, was another one that immediately came to mind. Like, "starts off weak but becomes really strong/important by the end" is Shuichi's thing! Also, counterpart to Kaito's Knight. And Void is all about secrets, mystery, etc. From the Extended Zodiac: "Where others might be compelled to go out and seek answers, the Void-bound lean more toward casting doubt on what is already considered understood. They don't take much on faith and would rather live in a state of confusion- than believe something that might be untrue or bow to intellectual authority... At their best, Void-bound are wise, intuitive, and vibrant. At their worst, they can be dismissive, indecisive and apathetic." 

I had considering Light, for seeking out knowledge/truth, but Shuichi's character arc ends on "fuck you, I refuse to play. You all get nothing more from us" and learning to live with ambiguity, so I think he's way more Void. But, again, inversion would be Thief of Light, so selfishly taking away knowledge/importance from others.

Speaking of Light, I made Miu Mage of Light. Mage is like, active Seer, seeking out knowledge for yourself (vs advising others) and Light is luck, knowledge, and also importance/plot relevance. As an inventor, Miu keeps innovating and figuring things out, plus she's very motivated by her own importance to the world. She wants to be seen more than anything else and loves being smarter than those around her. Also: "At their best, the Light-bound are resourceful and driven. At their worst they can be fussy, pedantic, and insensitive." Inversion is Heir of Void, so "inviting change via hiding things" or "changing what's kept secret", which suits Miu when plotting murder.

Finally, Maki is Prince of Blood. Blood is trust, bonds, relationships, stubbornness, duty, obligation (vs freedom, change, choices) so "someone who breaks bonds/destroys relationships" but also "someone who destroys using/motivated by duty/relationships". Like, Maki is inherently a fracture point in the group because of her talent and then directly breaks the group apart and sabotages her relationships with the others in chapter 5, but also she's deeply motivated by her bonds to others in all of her destructive actions (protectiveness for orphanage/friend, love for Kaito). This sound super negative, but I think this is also the Maki who commits to destroying the institution of Danganronpa in chapter 6. Sometimes you have to be decisive and cut bad relationships out of your life.

Inversion would be Sylph of Breath, so "healing via change" or "encouraging growth towards freedom", which you can argue is sort of the way Kaito wants her to go? But she just doesn't. Idk, for better or worse, I think Maki is very aware of who she is and how people related to her, so even at her worst she's true to herself, vs, say, Kaito or Kokichi, who act "ooc".

Various Jazz Forms: Jason Edition! (Click for clarity)

1) Fire Jason

+ He is a fire spirit, specifically one of hellfire. He also controls some aspects of healing, light, and life, and is the child of the Spirit King, making him quite powerful.

+ He is incredibly powerful but also very reckless and foolhardy. He is the first to dive into battle and is not afraid of hurting himself in order to hurt the enemy. He is hot to the touch and can burn skin but can cool himself down if he wants.

+ He adores Jazz and when he met her, he almost immediately agreed to sign a spirit contract with her in order to be in her service. Thankfully, she is a good contractor and takes good care of him.

+ He is of his usual height, 6'3", but he can grow to larger sizes with enough fuel. As such, he can also shrink into a tiny flame when he is weak or tired. In order to gain more power, he needs fuel, which can be wood, gasoline, paper, or even Jazz’s bodily fluids like blood.

+ For some reason, I dressed him up like a man from the west in the 1800s, so he kinda has cowboy vibes. He also wears gold a lot.

2) AI Jason

+ Inspired by AM from "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream." (I've never actually read it, but I've researched a little into it and got interested.)

+ His name was R.E.D., which stood for "Robotic Enemy Defenses." He was programmed to automatically detonate bombs and defend strongholds using programmed strategies through investigating and taking information from current and past history of wars.

+ He hates all humans. He was created with the intent of being a weapon for war, but after being abandoned by his creator after his role was finished, he was so enraged that he started another war and wiped out all humans in his universe. Nowadays, he pretends to be a harmless AI in another dimension after he created a program to send copies of himself to other worlds.

+ Jazz dotes on Jason a lot because she is unaware of his past. She gave him the name meaning "healer", unintentionally trying to reverse his original purpose. She thinks of him as a regular AI who gained consciousness.

+ The screen that holds him only contains a sprite of his body. The screen itself is only around 60" but the sprite itself is 10". He designed it himself, and although he is cute, he is 1000% willing to kill and torture.

3) Angel Jason

+ He is a seraphim, and has 3 pairs of wings because of it. One pair hides his face, another hides his feet, and the last is used to fly. Like all seraphim, he is colored red.

+ He protects Heaven and used to be a Throne, but was raised up a rank after he died in a fight to protect Heaven.

+ He is around 20 feet tall, including his wings.

+ Jazz is his favorite human. He has refrained from having children with her due to the fact that it is considered a sin, but if he did, their children would be the tallest, even amongst other nephilim.

+ He is apathetic to most things due to his angel status, but he is very partial to anything related to Jazz, often protecting her and healing her without being asked to. As such, there have been rumors in heaven that he will soon be cast out and become a fallen angel because of his emotional affair with her.

4) Snake Jason

+ Inspired by multiple infamous serpents from mythology and legends such as Jörmungandr, Apep, Python, and the Leviathan.

+ Because he is the embodiment of chaos and destruction, he is completely hated by most people who knows about him. As such, he is often killed and tortured whenever he encounters someone with weapons that can hurt him. He was born that way, but it doesn’t stop people from trying to vanquish him.

+ He has the ability to change his size, shapeshift into various forms, create natural disasters (such as storms, eclipses, droughts, earthquakes, etc), destroy celestial objects, consume souls, and is immortal. As such, he can be temporarily defeated, but never truly killed. However, this only causes him great pain.

+ He has apathy for humanity and any creature in general. However, Jazz once saved him and since then, he’s been encountering her reincarnations every time he comes back from the dead. He gained fondness for her because of her unwavering loyalty and protects her when he rampages against the world.

+ He is around 25,000 feet long and 3,000 feet wide in his regular form. Yes, he does have two of them. Iykyk :9

5) Monster Jason

+ Inspired by the Minotaur from Greek mythology.

+ He is the combination of a bull and a ram. I give him sheep motifs a lot bc not only is it cute and contrasts with Jazz's wolf motif, I consider him a sacrificial lamb, especially bc of his death that was chosen by the audience.

+ Half of his face is melting off because he was attacked after he met a human for the first time after he tried to sneak off and see the outside world. As such, he is extremely self conscious and lonely. After meeting Jazz who snuck inside the maze and didn't care about his appearance, he is extremely attached and possessive of her.

+ He is around 8 feet tall. Jazz adores how tall he is and likes looking up at him. Likewise, he also finally enjoys one thing about himself when she is cradled underneath him.

+ Jason used to be kept hidden for his own protection by Bruce, but after he left home and was captured, he was imprisoned in a labyrinth by another person. Afterwards, he was kept in the labyrinth to be hunted for sport in order to take his valuable horns. He believes that his family has abandoned him, but they’re actually trying to find him.

Charwhit and Teruxander are parallels and I'm scared for Charles oh god.

My friend and I just realised the similarities between Charwhit and Teruxander from a character design standpoint, like it's actually uncanny.

They both have extremely similar smiling expressions (btw I checked literally every other sprite and only Eden comes close to have a similar smiling sprite).

Their hair is also literally the fucking same just flipped and Xander also has messier hair.

If you're not convinced I literally traced Xander's hair and overlapped it on Whit's sprite. It's literally just identitical to Whit's hair just messier.

Obviously we can get into their personality on how they're both characters that seemed "difficulty" (Whit's lack of ability to take things seriously and Xander's hot headedness) but then showed that they were actually quite kind. However they're also very secretive about their past and seem to hold baggage that they dont want to share.

Now let's get into Charles and Teruko, the similarities are less obvious like them having the same fucking hair but it's still there.

They both have ponytails but in reverse positioned, similar to how Xanwhit's haircut is reversed.

They also have a sprite pose that is extremely similar.

But I do actually think the similarities with Teruko and Charles mostly come from the storyline itself.

From Chapter 1 and 2 their role seems to have reversed, Teruko becoming distrusting of everyone and Charles becoming extremely trusting of Whit. This parallel is pointed out in Chapter 2 quite obviously.

They also have something going on with their brother but that's just more like...a fun fact type of thing.

Anyways yeah considering how DRDT's whole thing is supposed to be "You shouldn't trust blindingly but you shouldn't also distrust everyone" and Whit/Xander seem to parallel uhmm...

I'm worried for Charles.

People like to say that Lumine is serious and Aether is a silly omegaboy compared to her, and that can be taken as headcanon, but they also bring up sprites and art of them as evidence, which I don't think proves anything at all.

Those first sprites of theirs are often used to prove that Aether is a silly soft femboy, well, but if you just compare him to Lumine here, lol. He has his eyebrows tilted, his lips pursed, and he looks generally focused, whereas Lumine has a rather relaxed face, her eyebrows are raised and her mouth is slightly open. She's the one who's more carefree here, not more serious.

And so it is on other art with them.

Here they smile the same, but Aether's eyebrows are tilted again, while Lumine's are raised, a slight touch of their character separation, or at least Mihoyo's attempts at it. Aether turns out like this >:) while Lumine is like this (⁠ ⁠◜⁠‿⁠◝⁠ ⁠)

Here is a clear difference in vibes: who has it there carefree and cheerful, while other one is cunning and proud?

Aether is often represented as (ᓀ-ᓂ) face. This can be seen in many of the birthday art where he is drawn as a chibi. Lumine is more emotional at the same time. Just for clarity, if you change their facial expressions here, you get the fanon silly Aether and the cold girlboss Lumine

Although Aether is the calmer one, people themselves like to point out that he defends himself in battle when Lumine attacks. But he is not calm in a naive gentle way, it is rather a sly mischievous expression. He has more charisma than his omega image. Lumine is not a block of ice, she expresses quite a lot of emotions, and even if people agree with this, not wanting to see her as just a cold queen, they still underestimate the expressiveness that she has. She is the one who sticks out her tongue in thought and always raises her eyebrows, as if making "whoopsey~" emotion. This doesn't make her an omega in reverse, it doesn't transfer her to this "vulnerable twin" status, but it humanizes her much more.

In conclusion, I want to say that the goal is not to prove which twin is cooler or that there is no point in creating headcanons, because they are still implied to be both main characters, although Mihoyo does it in their own way, but that's not the point. I'm just really tired of Aether being represented as a sweet fragile boy, because recognizing some of his strengths is somehow equivalent to supporting the image of Aether from Aether's harem from memes. But it's not equivalent, one does not lead to the other, Aether can still have charisma (he does) and not be a threat. Lately, the fandom has been very fond of giving characters who interfere with the roles of safe children or helpless individuals so that they don't "interfere", but this is fundamentally wrong, lol. Often, this is the reason for such a representation of Aether, and not because people just like this type of character. It's just noticeable, you know, when people just like femboys without any hidden agenda and when they deliberately call Aether a pathetic weakling. Lumine can be as cool and wonderful as she wants, but not necessarily at the expense of Aether's safely softening. Because if you play by these rules and use official art as an example, then it will not be exactly like this. In fact, all headcanons for the main character of Genshin are valid, but those that the majority supports are still more valid. But this is headcanon, not canon, no matter how hard they try to convince everyone of it.

ok so throw out all of my prior speculation as to what was going to happen in that chapter lol. it was so short.. combined with how short chapter 4 was (and the fact that this one doesn't even get its own chapter number) i'm inclined to think they were supposed to be one chapter with davepeta and jasprose maybe being some comic relief after the heavier vriska content? but they got split when the comic made the switch to bimonthly. which i noticed with a couple of the updates prior to page 666 and was confirmed for me in the commentary.

hopefully this means the next one will be back to a certain length, but even knowing now that there's only actually one full chapter left has completely thrown all my expectations for how this arc was going to pace itself out. they ended this one on a really good note, leading us to expect that the next chapter will be set 4 years later (though there's still a part of me prepared to be psyched out and the reveal will be like. 400 years.) but the framing of it would seem to suggest vriska hasn't exactly spent those 4+ years chilling with the sprites and becoming a better person... like i suspected, we get a direct allusion to vriska's addictive relationship with 8-balls, suggesting she's not in a good place at all.

talking so much about fefeta yesterday led me for a brief second to suspect that she was the one calling davepeta (and davepeta didn't want to answer because they fucking hate talking with their alternate selves LOL) but instead we get a direct parallel between jasprose and davepeta which i somehow had not picked up on until the story pointed it out to me. alluding to the "bonus side-story set in the universe of another comic entirely" as if it's another extra-canonical pocket dimension like the Plot Point was really clever. so for the time being fefeta's role still hasn't been revealed, but considering all the talk about jane leading up to (and within) page 666 this added parallel seems to make it more and more plausible that vriska and jane's arcs are poised to intersect at some point...

i think previously i had been pretty sold on vriska's therapy arc being mostly straightforward with only minor setbacks, and i was entertaining the possibility that vriska would emerge WORSE from the plot point purely for my own hypothetical amusement... but after this one it truly does feel like it's up in the air. the 8-ball on chapter 5 only looks MORE ominous now if vriska has just spent 4 years getting worse rather than getting better. can you really just snap your fingers and reverse 4 years of downward spiralling in a single chapter of a visual novel...
