2000 Stockholm - Number 6 - Roger Pontare - "When Spirits Are Calling My Name"
youtube
A Swedish icon performing in Sweden. He's already been to Eurovision once in a duet, and now he's on his own in front of 13,000 fans representing Sami people. Even if he's singing in English for the final and not in Swedish as he did when utterly dominating Melodifestivalen.
This is the third time that Roger entered Melfest, and winning it twice out of three attempts ain't bad. When Spirits are Calling My Name (or När vindarna viskar mitt namn in Swedish) is a full strength blast of bombast. It could be the theme tune to an immensely successful 1980s, US, 60-minute TV drama series about a man alone against the world, forging his own path and determined to do right by his people. Which is what the song is actually about.
In fact the US connection isn't too remote either. Roger's staging incorporates elements of Native American imagery alongside that of Sami culture. It's one of the songs that is on the path to realising that incorporating traditional cultural sounds and images alongside a more modern musical sensibility, is immensely popular with Eurofans and Eurovision voters alike. It makes connections among a wide swathe of the audience across the continent. For instance the bastion of traditional Eurovision performance, Türkiye, gave this the full douze.
Ultimately, Roger finished a respectable 7th and this is one of those songs that live long in the fans memories. He, of course, went on to have a long musical career in Sweden with two more Melfest entries. He also uses his position to promote causes associated with vulnerable peoples and environmental issues.

I know you didn't ask but you said you don't have enough knowledge about Swedish entries in Swedish so I couldn't hold back I'm so sorry
These are some of my faves, please give a listen if you have time, I'd live to hear your opinions 🥰
1985: Kikki Danielsson - Bra vibrationer (80's was so fun can we go back pls) 1992: Carola - Fångad av en stormvind (currently my favourite Swedish winner) 1993: Arvingarna - Eloise (one of those songs I heard a lot in my childhood and only later learned it was an Esc entry) 1996: One More Time - Den Vilda (huge favourite among Esc fans and for a good reason) plus this Swedish version which they then translated to English for Eurovision (cowards), possibly my favourite Swedish entry of all time: 2000: Roger Pontare - När Vindarna viskar mitt namn
and for bonus round my favourite Melfest entry that didn't win: 2015: Jon Henrik Fjällgren - Jag Är Fri
Ooooooh nice nice nice let's see 👀
Bra vibrationer - Love the vibes of this one! This put me on a much better mood after the busy/tiring day I've had; good vibrations indeed 😍 In love with her pink blazer as well 💖
Fångad av en stormvind - Cute as heck!! Also, Carola is an incredible singer 💗_💗
Eloise - Fucking hell, this slaps so hard?!?! Why have y'all been hiding this from me 😭 The singer is so charismatic although all he did was stand still?! He sings so effortlessly and the song is SUPER catchy, it's giving me The Beatles vibes. I wish we had more genuinely great songs like this in the ESC these days (there's so much focus on the show nowadays that you sort of forget it's...a song contest, after all)
Den Vilda - This was so...pleasant? 🥺 Like, everything was perfectly in place and there wasn't too much of anything, yet it was incerdibly captivating (i.e. not boring in the slightest). Gives me Disney song vibes in a way (possibly because of the orchestral elements in the performance)
När Vindarna Viskar Mitt Namn - Okay this is just so cool and I decided I don't even need the English version in my life. Love the surprise modulation in the end
Jag Är Fri - This is so beautiful 😭 I actually have the world's vaguest memory of watching Melodifestivalen that year and being mad that *entry This And This* didn't win instead of Måns 💀 It might have been this particular entry even, the name rings a bell at least 🤔
Thank you so much for this!! I saw this ask in the morning and waited the whole day to be back at home so I could listen to these songs and it was just the perfect way to wind up a little after the day I've had. These were all such great songs and I'm not just saying that, I genuinely loved these 🥺🫶
#fun fact: for years i would rather watch melodifestivalen than our own eurovision qualification#because the quality of the latter was somewhat...🤡#not many of the songs from those years have stuck with me though. i just thought the overall quality of the show and the songs was better#objectively speaking#eric saade fangirl over here lol 👋#because-its-eurovision#answered asks

Melodifestivalen 08.02.2024. Andra Deltävlingen.
Hello everyone, today is the second semifinal of "Melodifestivalen-2025". And very interesting who those two finalists who will pass directly? The beginning was very interesting. It was shooted as it was in old days of twenty century. This time the second semifinal was in Gothenburg, Sweden.
youtube
The perfomance of swedish singer and participant of "Eurovision-1987" Lotta Engberg with swedish band "Triple And Touch" became the bonus to the opening of second semifinal of "Melodifestivalen-2025".
The video of the perfomance:
youtube
But now, let go to the perfomances of this evening.
1)Nomi Tales-Funniest Thing.
Nomi looked like some Disney Princess singing from some cartoon. She sang very nice and i liked the choreography. Well, all i can say it's good. I give 7 points from 10. The video of perfomance:
youtube
2)Schlagerz-Don Juan.
Well, not bad, although those ladies sang amazingly, but dansband music that s not my cup of tea, But at this song you can hear that this song was composed in "Waterloo style", i'm sorry, but "Waterloo" by ABBA was the best. Well, i give 4 points from 10. The video of perfomance:
youtube
3)Erik Segerstedt-Show Me What Love Is.

Very nice and beautiful ballad which sounded pleasant for my ears, Many catching tunes and powerful vocal. it's rarely when some ballade song catch my attention. Erik did amazing work! Bravo. I give 8 points from 10.
The video of perfomance:
youtube
4)Klara Hammarström-On And On And On And On.

Woooow! That's a super bombastic song! I love her outfit, the choreography and of course the song! It's really sounded epic. Bravo Klara! You did the great job. I give 9 from 10 points. The video of perfomance:
youtube
5)Fredrik Lundman-The Heart of a Swedish Cowboy.

Well, i'm not a fan of country style, of course Fredrik sang not bad, but no catching tune in this song, which could attract me. a song which you can listen only when you feel depressed, or just for one time. I give 3 points from 10.(I'm sorry, again it's my own opinion.) The video of perfomance:
youtube
6)Kaliffa-Salute.
Not bad song for the some summer party and the vocal of Kaliffa reminds a little of Big Sean. Just usual summer song it's all i can say. I give 6 points from 10. The video of perfomance:
youtube
And of course we couldn't not put the "Mellanakt" of the second semifinal with the host of "Melodifestivalen-2025" Edvin who sang a parody song "För Mannen Som Byter Kanal"(The original was sang by swedish singer Roger Pontare "När Vindarna Viskar Min Namn"("When Spirits Are Calling My Name"), with Which Roger perfomed in "Eurovision-2000".
youtube
So it means it's time to know who passed directly to the final. And the first who passed directly to the final is… ERIK SEGERSTEDT!!!

And the second finalist is... KLARA HAMMARSTRÖM!!!

Kaliffa passed to the Semi Kvalen Final, so it means that Nomi Tales, Schlagerz and Fredrik Lundman is out of competition.

Congratulations to Erik and Klara for the passing to the final.

And today, will be the third semifinal of "Melodifestivalen-2025" and of course will my review about it. Thank you for reading and bye bye for the next time!

The New Millenium!
The year 2000 was a wild year to some, marking the end of the 20th century, but also going into a new millenium. But after the Y2K panic settled down and we saw the world not end, the Eurovision Song Contest continued on with the next edition.
The contest had 24 songs fight it out, with the Olsen Brothers winning for Denmark with "Fly On The Wings Of Love," which after a contest held in Sweden, kept the contest in the Nordic area for another year.
Latvia also debuted in 2000 with Brainstorm and "My Star." That song would top my ranking. Sweden took my 2nd close by with "When Spirits Are Calling My Name" by Roger Pontare. Both songs took my breath away for different reasons and should be mentioned and honored.

Eurovision 2006 - Number 47 - Roger Pontare - "Silverland"
youtube
Roger is back for his first appearance at Melfest since he won it in 2000. This time though, he's formed a super-team with two names who are going to be heard a lot more from now on. Marcos Ubeda and Thomas G:son.
Marcos has already written the lyrics to a Eurovision winner (Take Me to Your Heaven) while Thomas is only just getting going, but is possibly the most prolific Eurovision and national final songwriter there is. At this point however he's only had one Eurovision song (Listen to Your Heartbeat for Sweden in 2001), but in 2006 he has contributions to seven songs in Melodifestivalen.
Silverland is essentially a northern Scandinavian walking simulator in a song. Roger takes us on a tour of his home under night skies and moonlight and over snow and ice. It's starts rather grandly with an orchestral introduction before moving into the territory of a chant. It establishes a rhythm for voice and landscape, that's more of a stomp-along than anything complex. It feels either like nautical rowing or martial marching music. A song to sing along to keep up the tempo of manual labour or a long journey on foot. Walking through the night of the North of the world and trying to stay warm.
The chorus has more melody and less stomp, still there's a lot of repetition and Roger celebrates the cold landscapes. He's dressed well for it. It's a glam-Sami robe, pitched somewhere between Sinbad and Santa. Amidst the mists on stage, the song is compellingly foot-tapping. Enough to keep the cold at bay.
In terms of results this wasn't Roger's best effort. There was to be no return to Eurovision. He finished fourth in his heat, which which was enough to get him to Andra Chansen. In the second chance final, he once again finished fourth, this time that resulted in elimination.
However this isn't Roger's last appearance at Melfest - he's still got one more to go

What's your favorite swedish song from Eurovision bestie?
Oh my god this is a tough one. Normally I would've said Charlotte Perelli from 1999 but she competed with the English version and the Swedish one is by far superior. Roger Pontare from 2000 is also a classic. The kid in me loves Eric Saade from 2011. But if I had to pick, I would say Carola in 1991 when we won because a) she sang in Swedish b) it's so damn catchy you can't help but love it

The man from the great expanses, Roger Pontare, has been inducted into the Melodifestivalen Hall of Fame for his poignant artistic expressions, not least in winning the competition in 2000 with his entry "När vindarna viskar mitt namn"
"När vindarna viskar mitt namn" (When the Winds Whisper My Name) extols the traditions of indigenous peoples and their efforts to protect their territories and cultures. For his solo appearance in Melodifestivalen 2000, Pontare wore a Sami costume associated with the indigenous population of Lapland in northern Sweden (and also the northern regions of Norway, Finland, and Russia)
Roger Pontare has represented Sweden twice in the Eurovision Song Contest, in 1994 (duet with Marie Bergman) with "Stjärnorna" and in 2000 with "When Spirits Are Calling My Name", placing 13th and 7th, respectively
During his performance at the Eurovision Song Contest 2000, Pontare sang his song was in English as "When Spirits Are Calling My Name" and was was accompanied by a Cree Indian dancer, a Thule Eskimo and a Norwegian Sami
