Eurovision 2006 - Number 47 - Roger Pontare - "Silverland"
youtube
Roger is back for his first appearance at Melfest since he won it in 2000. This time though, he's formed a super-team with two names who are going to be heard a lot more from now on. Marcos Ubeda and Thomas G:son.
Marcos has already written the lyrics to a Eurovision winner (Take Me to Your Heaven) while Thomas is only just getting going, but is possibly the most prolific Eurovision and national final songwriter there is. At this point however he's only had one Eurovision song (Listen to Your Heartbeat for Sweden in 2001), but in 2006 he has contributions to seven songs in Melodifestivalen.
Silverland is essentially a northern Scandinavian walking simulator in a song. Roger takes us on a tour of his home under night skies and moonlight and over snow and ice. It's starts rather grandly with an orchestral introduction before moving into the territory of a chant. It establishes a rhythm for voice and landscape, that's more of a stomp-along than anything complex. It feels either like nautical rowing or martial marching music. A song to sing along to keep up the tempo of manual labour or a long journey on foot. Walking through the night of the North of the world and trying to stay warm.
The chorus has more melody and less stomp, still there's a lot of repetition and Roger celebrates the cold landscapes. He's dressed well for it. It's a glam-Sami robe, pitched somewhere between Sinbad and Santa. Amidst the mists on stage, the song is compellingly foot-tapping. Enough to keep the cold at bay.
In terms of results this wasn't Roger's best effort. There was to be no return to Eurovision. He finished fourth in his heat, which which was enough to get him to Andra Chansen. In the second chance final, he once again finished fourth, this time that resulted in elimination.
However this isn't Roger's last appearance at Melfest - he's still got one more to go

📣 NEW RELEASE! 🎉 NEW RELEASE 🔔 NEW RELEASE!
🇸🇪 Kaiak - 🎶 Doggy Woggy
Kaiak is a collaborative duo based in Sweden, comprised of musicians Marcos Ubeda (keyboards, producer, songwriter, all backing vocals) and Emil Gullhamn (lead vocals, guitar, songwriter). Deep in the forests of the Swedish countryside, Kaiak makes music that’s equal parts jazz club, soft rock and indie.
Their song, "Doggy Woggy," is a groovy soft rock delight that takes you back to the golden era of music. Recorded in a vintage fashion, this song brings together a talented 5-piece band in the studio. With influences from Toto and Steely Dan, it exudes a 70s funky love feel, blending West Coast pop with a hint of jazz.
Kaiak’s music is, first and foremost, art intended to reveal deep and soothing feelings. The plan is to continue the music’s evolution, keep focused on what the group does best, and build a global fanbase. This is emotional, hook-filled, and melodic music with substance and fans of great modern songwriting need to find Kaiak at once.

Eurovision 2003 - Number 29 - Sofia Källgren & Robert Wells - "My Love"
youtube
2003 Melfest has some interesting entries. It's by no means all schlager or Scandipop. It's still got lots of bigger names returning both in terms of performers and song-writers. The Swedish song-writing industry is growing up into the Europe spanning monster it's destined to become.
Take Marcos Ubeda. He wrote the lyrics for Take Me to Your Heaven, Eurovision winner 1999 and was the sole composer of Sweden's 2002 entry Never Let It Go. He has pedigree, and is becoming prolific. He had four songs in national finals in 2002, including his first outside Sweden. In 2003, he's writing piano ballads as well as disco bangers. The ballad side of things is represented by Sofia Källgren & Robert Wells on piano. Both Sofia and Robert have their own Melodifestival history. Sofia finished 7th in 1989 and 4th in 1990. Robert entered in 1987 but failed to make the final. My Love is a complete contrast with just about everything else competing in Sweden. The piano line is traditional, intricate, ornamental but the perfect match to Sofia's serene and impeccable vocals. This is a perfectly still lake of song that has a single swan gliding across the surface without causing a ripple.
It's almost too perfect. Sofia stands in pristine white among the dry ice clouds. It sounds so easy and graceful. The dictionary definition of elegance. It had the misfortunate to be in Heat 3 this year, which was stacked. The televote placed it fifth, one spot off qualifying for the viewers' choice final. It was not to be in 2003.
It was Sofia's last try at Melfest, but she has gone on to become big in China as well as, inevitably, becoming the Swedish voice of several Disney characters. Robert had another attempt at Eurovision, but not in Sweden. He entered Eirodziesma in Latvia in 2007 making it through to final. He's finally made it to the Eurovision stage for Belarus's 2010 entry Butterflies performed by 3+2 feat. Robert Wells. Marcos Ubeda has written many songs for national finals, mainly for Melfest but also Dansk MGP, Eirodziema and Eurovizja in Lithuania.
