THE ELECTRIC HORSEMAN (1979) Grade: B
Loved the cinematography, the acting (Willie Nelson!) & the music worked well.I don't think they make movies like this now, definitely will have a different, more happier ending.

Wisdom for all Ages
Let me take you back in time to our cattle ranching days — a little piece of paradise, with about 75 black Angus cattle under our care. I was the designated “helper” when it came to vaccinating, castrating, and tagging our young bovines. Not the most glamorous job, but someone had to do it!One day, our four-year-old daughter, Staci, wanted to tag along. We told her to stay in the truck and just…

The Wild Bronc
(Tate Phoenix Story)
People say we’re crazy or we must have a death wish riding wild beasts that can potentially kill us. Truth is, we just love the rush, the thrill of it if you will. We’re just a bunch of hillbillies who were standing around drinking, watching these wild animals thrash around in the pen or the arena we kept them in and thought: “Ya know what? I bet I can ride that thing and stay on it for… say… 5 seconds.” And the others would laugh and say we’re out of our minds for even thinkin’ that. But we look at them and say: “Yeah? Here, hold my beer. Watch this!” And then we stupidly get in the arena or pen and hop on the bucking bronco or bull with a rope and begin the ride of our lives. . . We never really thought this whole thing through until it was too late.
Nowadays we do it cause it’s fun and the thrill is like nothing you’ve ever felt in your life. This is our real roller coaster. Enjoy the ride!
June 22, 2023
The wild bronc in the chute was already bucking and wiling out, kicking the bars and whinnying something fierce before the boys could even finish getting the bucking rope on him. Just my luck I drew another nasty beast who most likely wants to kill me before I even climb on his back.
“Daggum it bronc! Hold still fella and this won’t be so bad!” Cody, my young ranch hand yells as he tries to steady the horse. He’s taking Colt’s place today since he’s still recovering from being speared in the side from that bull a few days ago.
Ryan smiles and holds up a small piece of peppermint candy and waves it in front of the bronc’s nose. That did the trick! The bronc settles down and the boys finish strapping the ropes on him and fixing the saddle.
Cody slaps me on the back indicating he’s ready for me to climb on the wild stallion. I take a deep breath and blow it out as I start climbing the rails of the chute and gently slide down into the saddle. I wait a few seconds to make sure the bronc doesn’t start going crazy again before slipping my hand into the rope. I’m silently praying this ride doesn’t go anything like that last one did.
“Next up we have Tate Phoenix on Cherry Bomb!” The announcer’s voice booms over the speakers. The crowd cheers loudly as they anticipate my entrance. This is a bigger crowd and arena, with it being the finals and the last day of this rodeo here in Darby, Montana. Everyone loves the local boy, I guess.
I put part of the rope between my teeth as I wrap the rest of it tightly around my hand. Getting a good grip, I settle more into the saddle and lean way back, buckle to the sky. Taking one last deep breath I give Cody a nod and the gate flies open and dirt goes flying everywhere. The bronc kicks up and down, bucking like he’s got a bur under his saddle. We spin left and right, getting closer to the fence of the arena as the buzzer sounds. We made it to 8 seconds.
The bronc is still bucking as I’m trying to release my hand from the rope. His back leg slips from under him as he was trying to rear out, sending us both to the ground. I couldn’t get off of him in time.
His withers crash into the side of the chute. I let out a yell as the horse falls on my leg, pain hitting immediately and I face-plant the dirt.
Men from the chutes are now on the ground trying to get the horse to stand. The horse moves some, as Ryan pulls me out from under him. I can’t move my right leg. The pain is excruciating. I let out another painful yell, my face showing the pain, as Ryan waves for our personal medical team to come help. He waves off the rodeo paramedics, as ours come out with the stretcher. Nobody outside of my ranch knows what I really am. We couldn’t allow that secret to get out.
After loading me onto the stretcher, my medical team escort me out of the arena. I take off my hat and wave to the crowd as the announcer gives everyone my score.
“Give it up, ladies and gentlemen for your 2023 National Finals Rodeo Champion, Tate Phoenix with a score of 90.7!”
I thought for sure I wasn’t going to win after the fall, but I guess the judges must love me or something. If I wasn’t in so much pain I would’ve done my signature backflip and thrown my hat in the air. Maybe next time.
I get taken back to my dressing room where my team goes to work trying to figure out what happened to my leg. They take x-rays and start cutting my pant leg off. When they do, everyone winces. A few suck in a sharp breath through their teeth. My bone was sticking out, and it was bleeding like crazy. It was confirmed, the horse broke my leg.
Good thing this rodeo was over. The next one was in 2 weeks in Billings, Montana. Should be enough time for my leg to heal completely and I can get back to doing what I do best. . .
Breaking broncs and bulls and dominating the PBR world. .
