i mentioned in my post about armand’s 1940s costumes that he visibly stands apart from the other Théâtre vamps, and i wanted to elaborate on that a bit.
the Théâtre coven are an eclectic group. however there are a few unifying factors. first off: pattern clashing. costume designer carol cutshall was inspired by the czech filmmaker karel zeman, whose live-action/animated films overlap with the Théâtre des Vampires own performance format:
many of the Théâtre vamps’ costumes (particularly onstage) involve bold patterns in black and grey, creating a lot of visual texture. on top of this monochrome palette you get pops of jewel-tone color. it's an extremely attention-grabbing look; the opposite of armand's more subtle, shadowy style.
then there's the characters' personal tastes. eglee is quite fashion-forward, with a kind of proto-rockabilly showgirl vibe - and a few brightly colored outfits. estelle (the one with curly red hair) was inspired by edith piaf, and celeste's costumes copy the aggressive stripes and zigzags of dazzle camouflage. she also has more of a 1920s/30s look - an interesting detail because some of these vamps are presumably hundreds of years old, and their wardrobes include old and new pieces.
santiago's costumes are a fantastic mix of vintage formalwear/theatre costumes (some of which are clearly dracula-inspired) and edgier outfits like his leather jacket, because he clearly wants to be seen as cool and dangerous. his judge costume is Thin White Duke-era david bowie!
individually, all of these characters put a ton of personality into their outfits. as a group, they absolutely look like a bohemian theatre company. their aesthetic embraces the "hiding in plain sight" philosophy of the Théâtre des Vampires itself, and you can easily imagine them being local microcelebrities among the parisian cabaret crowd.
armand, meanwhile, has no interest in garnering attention from the general public. he sometimes participates in the unofficial coven uniform by wearing subdued pinstripes or a black/grey suit (including the outfit he wears to direct the court case...!), but in general he's far more conservative and formal, with a sepia-toned palette. he isn't really one of the crew.

Hello!
I wanted to ask a question, if that's okay. So, I'm genderfluid afab and feel like a man sometimes (probably more often than I allow myself to realise). I don't have access to a Binder or anything of that sort (transphobic parents).
Is there any way for me to look/be more masculine? I'm a bit scared of goggling because I don't want to accidentally take advice from Tate people or the like.
(PS. I really like your Siegfried Farnon cosplay!)
Heya!
This is a tough one to answer. Because "masculine" means different things to different people. And "passing", as well.
Like. When I wear my fleece jacket and baseball cap, I'm deliberately passing as a certain type of man. But I felt more masculine the other day wearing an ascot.
So, I think we need to break down this question:
1) If you're looking to pass, there are going to be trans masc guides out there that will direct you to a very particular gender presentation. They tend to assume you are white and skinny. They present themselves as a list of Dos and Do-Nots, and at the end of the day, do more harm than good, imo. Because passing guides are almost always about hiding parts of yourself physically, often to the expense of hiding parts of your psyche.
Seek them out if you must, but when it comes to passing for safety, all I can suggest is ambiguous layers, a hat, keeping your head down and your mouth shut. The best way to pass is to not draw attention to yourself, alas.
2) If you're looking to dress more masculine to alleviate gender dysphoria, then you need to drill down to what makes you dysphoric and start there. My smaller feet is one area of contention for me, so I look for semi-dressy shoes that look long and elegant (like Taft boots). Since you can't get a binder, consider layers, if your chest bothers you.
3) If you're looking to dress more masculine to seek gender euphoria, then figure out your aesthetic masculine ideal. Make a pinboard of Looks you enjoy and see if there are trends. Some folks are drawn to athletic wear. Work wear. Perhaps a vintage aesthetic -- Rockabilly. 90s grunge. 1940s British country vet (meeeee, lol).
Ask yourself: What are the hallmarks of this style? Are there casual and formal versions? How does it change seasonally? How much of it is clothing and how much of it is the body (haircut, being muscular, etc)? And above all - what is this style trying to communicate to others?
Once done, see what sort of fashion tips are out there for your style. Who are the fashion experts and how much do you care about their advice? (Menswear guy has great tips about how a modern suit "should" fit, but a lot of his advice is also personal preference with a big dollop of classism.)
Pay close attention to how men wear their clothes -- where they sit on the body, how they style the outfit. Compare how a man is styled in your preferred look to how a woman is styled and see what that sparks in you. How much of it is the clothing or body? How much is posture? You might discern some visual shorthand you can harness to be read as more masculine. You might also come up with ways to have plausible deniability around your parents by being able to pivot a masculine look to be more feminine, when needed.
After all this research, get yourself to a thrift shop or other second hand option and start experimenting. Buying actual men's clothing is probably going to be your best bet, but depending on your Look Book, that may not always be the case.
No one can tell you how to feel more masculine -- that really needs to come from within. Once you figure that out, then it's a matter of reconciling your ideal look with the peculiarities of your body. (And all men have their own challenges wrt the fit of clothes.)
Afford yourself as much grace as possible when it comes to your body. And again, remember that feeling more masculine and passing more masculine may not always overlap and could even be at odds. And only you can determine if and when that is a problem.
#trans stuff#ty about Siegfried - his aesthetic is one I've been chasing most my life#so he is def my personal masculine ideal and his clothes are now more than cosplay for me

one thing i haven't really seen in all this analysis of niche microtrend revival is that this was an ongoing process in the past also. like... one thing that has been conspicuously missing from 90s-00s period historical dramas is the absence of deee-lite or pizzicato 5 mod/disco revival. alongside it there were elements of like, baroque pop revival (a 60s niche microtrend) that permeate as far as manic street preachers or danny elfman, and i think this is what eventually morphed into the jon brion and yann tiersen era of alternative music. there was a rockabilly episode in daria, that scene was solidly adjacent to ska the whole time. goths and punks never really at any point stopped doing the 80s. i can understand why you can't do a revival-revival easily because the distinctions are so difficult to pin down and it would be so fussy, but one example i can point to is to look at what textiles and production tools were new at the time and which scenes overlapped. disco differs significantly from 90s disco revival in fashion because chaka khan was wearing things more like organza and rayon and polyester while lady miss kier was designing her own nylon and spandex and producing album art on an apple desktop. giorgio moroder was bridging the analog to digital transition and picking up synths from europe, donna summer was a theater summer stock actress. does any of this really matter? no, but if you're styling a vintage photoshoot or doing a theme party you can throw in paisley and bellbottoms, a zoot suit, or denim and spikes. they were all there

hi! i was just wondering, what kind of music do the characters listen to?
Noel: Noel doesn't often find himself entranced with a tune, but will give in to musical persuasion during hands-on activites. Indie and bedroom pop are his usual go-tos, but during heavy lifts, heavy metal carries him. Mona: Mona admires melodies accompanied with a BANG! While jazz and electric swing are good enough to tip her into a giddy groove, at a moments notice she'd eagerly re-enact a beloved track from her favorite musical theatre pieces. Sorin: Sorin finds solace in the simplest sounds: the lilt of a flute, the crash of piano keys, and a whiny violin. It's no surprise that they're a fan of classical, but the narrative of Indie Folk and the passion of musical theatre delights them all the same. Mary: Mary doesn't listen to any tunes. In fact, she dreads the irritating tunes that grate her consciousness. Vein: Bubbly and bursting with energy, Vein lets loose to break core, heavy metal, and punk pop performances. As a big fan of a grand, glowing stage, Kpop groups and Vocaloids also have a huge chunk of her heart and her wallet - plenty of lightsticks lie tucked away in her closet. Tempest: Music consumes Tempest's soul and gives life into every fibre of his being. While he's deeply entrenched in the punk rock and progressive rock genre that's inspired his own work, he enjoys the energy that only ska can light within him.
Charlie: While classic country may suit Charlie's upbringing, he's also a fan of rock himself. Progressive rock and folk rock help him get through his tasks for any given day. [CARSON]: Walking past Carson's room is always a treat, you never know just what sort of tune will bleed out from under their door. But cycles of pop rock, rap, and chamber rock become familiar soon enough to those who linger. Maraeve: Maraeve can be found often humming church hymns and gospel. Though occasionally she'll indulge in world music. Drew: Often lost in their own world, Drew is easily drawn into the ambience of Lo-Fi and grunge distortions. But when they need a good shock to put a pep in their step, they dive into the electrifying feel of dubstep. Khana: Khana doesn't pay much mind to the genre of music he listens to. A shuffle through his playlist is a roulette of classic country, rockabilly, heavy metal, and band music. World music has its own special place is his private moments, particularly, Indian pop.

You know, the John Wick universe might actually be a cool place to live not because of the assassin hotel or the bulletproof suits or whatever, but because they've got about seventeen billion of the most luscious nightclubs in existence. Like sure you gotta keep tabs on the frequent haunts of your local mob boss's lame son but I feel like you could just set up a whatsapp with your buddy Linda who's dating one of those tattooed rockabilly operator ladies and on the nights where John decides to stay home and tan pineapple leather for his books you can go take hyper-distilled psilocybin and listen to Boy Harsher in a hot tub with two thousand of your closest and sexiest friends like come on

Let's talk about fashion
I am happy to see Carl and Pete wearing something different than suits.
The suits, which kinda became their signature style on stage (mostly for Pete ) are alright but I love the rock/rockabilly look and I would pick that for them without any doubts: It "suits" them and their music.
Carl and his go-to outfits: the rock star, black as the main color, black pants, leather boots, black coats, and hats ( he needs to update some pieces like the leather jacket). He looks badass and the clothes are well thought out.
Pete, go-to outfit is the vintage British gentleman, if not done right, it make him look older, especially since he is rocking the silver hair. He can keep that style but he need to update the suits with modern pieces to make it work in his favor. See the 2 suits in the photo : (far left) dark suit and the light old fashion suit, both suits but styled differently.
John and Gary, they always look 10/10. John has a simpler but modern look, still youthful, with denim or black pants and casual jackets he is the cool guy without trying hard and Gary is the most fashion-forward of them all. He definitely dares to wear special pieces and colors.

dunky and rust! took me forever but details below
Rusty:
*clutches fists at overalls costing $1.29 in the 50s
ANYWAY uhm Rusty came to the SR in 1957 so I took some inspiration from both 50s and 60s clothing but mostly 50s
But yeah like all the other freethinkers🤖 in this community i subscribe to Rusty being nonbiney (altho they're mostly masc presenting)
I want to say that Rusty's jumpsuit is based off women's workwear but like. women's workwear in the 50's was based off men's workwear so what difference does it make😭
Ripped their boots straight from the bottom right of the catalog here so hehe
Their nameplate is specifically very simple and non-glossy to designate them as a maintenance worker as opposed to for passenger service
I don't. um. intend for Rusty to be that much taller than overhaul 2 loey. they're probably around the same height at best and Rusty is def a bit shorter than overhaul 3 loey
also they're wearing a flat cap. i don't like drawing them but it made the most sense so,
i don't know if they had binders in the 50s? If they didn't then um. I'm sure there was some kind of equivalent shapewear-
Duncan:
this guy was such a damn pain to design for oml
i really need to find a way to save my ref pics when i make my pencil sketches so i can add them to these posts when im done djfdjbfk
i gave duncan beeeaaauuuttifull lushious long blonde locks💅because he's got a long ass funnel HAHAHAH
he's tall. but he's also lanky. he's like a very tall twink sorta. like i get that he's strong cuz he worked at a factory but bro cannot retain muscle like. he's sticks.
oh and also blue eyes because of douglas. yyyyeah
anyway you might be wondering. capy what the hell is that ugly ass band of pattern across his chest
well that was my BIG BRAIN moment.
starting around like the 19th century people would take the fabric used to make sacks for shipping dried goods like animal feed and flour, and turn that fabric into clothing
this originated in more rural communities but became more widespread during world war I and especially world war II with rationing and whatnot. basically when companies noticed people wearing their sacks they began printing patterns onto their sacks for this explicit purpose (cuz you know. marketing)
before arriving to Sodor, duncan worked in a factory. you know who else produces dried goods?? factories!!!
around the time he arrived to sodor was also when American rock and roll was really influencing British youth, particularly with the rise of teddy boys and then the rockers (which is from my understanding, greasers but British). So around the time Duncan was heading to Sodor there was already an air of rebellion among the UK's youth
I took particular inspiration from Rockabilly based on its noted influence on British popular culture, which from what I've seen, adopts some more flashy elements to their clothing in contrast to the traditional suit and dress. I was this close to making duncan wear a bowling shirt
the kerchief is also because of this hehe
so in a moment of genius/delusion, i thought. what if while working at the factory, duncan saw the trends of people using their feed sacks as clothing fabric, and stole a bag or two for himself so he could sew on a strip of the fabric onto his work shirts because he's, ya know, mr. rock n roll
yes i did all that just for a stripe of fabric on his chest i am VERY happy with this choice
btw here's the exact pattern i used (i just ripped it off the internet)
ok that's it thank you for reading through my rambling once again!! lowkey i want to post lil western next but also. i talked abt making rws/formal uniforms for the SR crew so. we'll see what happens next lol
#ttte rusty#ttte duncan#ttte#ttte humanized#wow i typed a lot for duncan#except most of it was just exposition hahaaa#NOW I CAN DRAW THEM INTERACTING YIPPPEEEEEE#pictures in the reception hall#capy posting
