more Simon Riley (Ghost) Headcanons
cause he's just so damn pretty (and i accidentally took a nap until 9pm, so I got time, honey.)
He is a big fan of dark liquors. Whiskey, Cognac, Bourbon, Scotch. He got introduced to it from a former superior officer and got a taste for it. He always takes it on the rocks, and drinks it slows. He has a few bottles stored up in his room for special occasions.
He's got a crooked smile, and it's the sweetest thing. He's been in combat for years, so he's bound to have some damage to his face. Because of it, he's got an uneven smile. He doesn't smile a lot because of it. But when he forgets to be insecure? Oh my, does his smile bring unsuspecting people to their knees.
He liked to watch old-school, black-and-white foreign films with his grandparents when he was a kid, so he has a soft spot for them. He learned a bit of french watching french noir style films, and loves watching old Hollywood movies (He calls them foreign because he's British.) Miracle on 34th street is one of his favorite Christmas films, but only in black and white.
He never ends a phone call with his s/o without saying some version of "I love you" or "I'll come back soon". The habit started when he was going on a mission and you were working and instead of ending the call immediately, he had waited a few moments before quietly whispering into the phone: "I promise I'll come home to you, darling."
He really doesn't like cauliflower and canned green beans. Like, even just seeing them makes him gag. He cannot stand them. Canned green beans ate a common staple in the military and he hates them with a burning passion now. And he just hates the taste of cauliflower (because he says it has none).
He is an advocate for well-fitted clothing. He doesn't care if it's trendy or not. He cares if his pants fall to the right length, if his shirts fit nicely around his arms, and if his pants are sitting at the right place. He hates seeing people wear the wrong fitted clothes while trying to wear the proper fit and ending up looking scruffy. It's his only fashion hill he will die on.

Propaganda
María Félix (Doña Barbara, La Mujer sin Alma, Rio Escondido, La Cucaracha)—Maria Felix is still possibly the most well-known Mexican film actress. She turned down multiple-roles in Hollywood and a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer in order to take roles in Mexico, France, and Argentine throughout the 1940s, 50s, 60s. She was so famous and so respected as a dramatic actress that she inspired painters, novelists and poets in their own art--she was painted by Diego Rivera, Jose Orozco, Bridget Tichenor. The novelist Carlos Fuentes used her as inspiration for his protagonist in Zona Sagrada. She inspired an entire collection by Hermes. In the late 1960s Cartier made her a custom collection of reptile themed jewels. She considered herself to be powerful challenger of morality and femininity in Mexico & worldwide--she routinely played powerful women in roles with challenging moral choices and free sexuality. But even still, years after he death, she is celebrated with Google Doodles, and appearances in the movie Coco, and holidays for the anniversary of her death.
Maureen O’Hara (The Parent Trap, The Quiet Man)—They called her the Queen of Technicolor. That right there should help introduce people to the fiery, wonderful, stunning Maureen O’Hara. She was from Ireland, born in 1920, and started in theater at the age of ten. At 15, she was winning drama awards, including one for her performance as Portia in the Merchant of Venice. At 16, she was the youngest pupil to graduate from the Guildhall School of Music. By 18, she transitioned to film, starting off with a bang alongside Charles Laughton in Hitchcock’s Jamaica Inn, and proceeded to work steadily up through the early 1970s. She was in adventures and comedies and romances, spent a lot of time in westerns giving merry hell to John Wayne (and less merry hell to the indomitable John Ford — she held her own even when he was verbally abusive and demeaning to her). She was in The Quiet Man, which was the first American-made film entirely filmed in a foreign country. She helped make American Christmas what it is with Miracle on 34th Street. She played a lineup of headstrong, forthright women second only, perhaps, to Katharine Hepburn. She was married three times, lived for a while with a boyfriend in Mexico, sued for custody of her daughter in the 1950s, AND sued a magazine for libel in the same era. After mostly retiring from acting, she edited a magazine. She eventually sold the magazine to spend more time with her grandson, but even then ran a ladies fashion store. She was an outspoken, brilliant, passionate lady, with amazing red hair, a career to envy, and — well — that face!
This is round 2 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.

María Félix:
Tumblr media
She's Thee Hot Vintage Movie Woman of México. She's absolutely gorgeous and always looks like she's about to step on you. you WILL be thankful if she does.
"María Félix is a woman -- such a woman -- with the audacity to defy the ideas machos have constructed of what a woman should be. She's free like the wind, she disperses the clouds, or illuminates them with the lightning flash of her gaze." - Octavio Paz
María Félix is one of the most iconic actresses of the Golden Era of Mexican Cinema. La Doña, as she was lovingly nicknamed, only had one son, and when her first marriage ended in divorce her ex-husband stole her only child, so she vowed that one day she’d be more influential than her ex and she’d get her son back. AND SHE DID! María Félix rejected a Hollywood acting role to start her acting career in Mexico on her own terms with El Peñón de las Ánimas (The Rock of Souls) starring alongside actor, and future third husband, Jorge Negrete. She quickly rose to incredible heights both in Mexico and abroad, later on rejecting a Hollywood starring role (Duel in the Sun) as she was already committed to the movie Enamorada at the planned filming time. Of this snubbing she said, quote: “I will never regret saying no to Hollywood, because my career in Europe was focused in [high] quality cinema. [My] india* roles are made in my country, and [my] queen roles are abroad.” (Translator notes: here the “india” role means interpreting a lower-class Mexican woman, usually thought of indigenous/native/mixed descent —which she had interpreted and reinvented throughout her acting career in Mexico— and what abroad was typically considered the Mexican woman stereotype, with the braids, long simple skirts, and sandals. This also references the expectation of her possibly helping Hollywood in perpetuating this stereotype for American audiences that lack the cultural and historical contexts of this type of role which would undermine her own efforts against this type of Mexican stereotypes while working in Europe) She was considered one of the most beautiful women in the world of her time by international magazines like Life, París Match, and Esquire, and was a muse to a vast number of songwriters (including her second husband Agustin Lara,), artists, designers, and writers. Muralist Diego Rivera described her as “a monstrously perfect being. She’s an exemplary being that drives all other human beings to put as much effort as possible to be like her”. Playwriter Jean Cocteau, who worked with her in the Spanish film La Corona Negra (The Black Crown) said the following about her, “María, that woman is so beautiful it hurts”. Haute Couture houses like Dior, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Hérmes, among others, designed and dressed her throughout her life. She died on her birthday, April 8, 2002, at 88 years old, in Mexico City. She was celebrated by a parade from her home to the Fine Arts Palace in the the city’s Historic Downtown, where a multitude of people paid tribute to her. Her filmography includes 47 movies from 1942 until 1970, and only two television acting roles in 1970. She has 2 music albums, one recorded with her second husband, Agustín Lara, in 1964 titled La Voz de María y la inspiración de Agustín «The voice of María and the inspiration of Augustín», and her solo album Enamorada «In Love» in 1998. Her bespoke Cartier jewelry is exhibited alongside Elizabeth Taylor’s, Grace Kelly’s and Gloria Swanson’s. In 2018, Film Director Martin Scorsese presented a restored and remastered version of her film Enamorada in the Cannes Classics section of the Cannes Festival and Google dedicated a doodle for her 104th birthday. On august 2023 Barbie added her doll to the Tribute Collection.

Maureen O'Hara:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought she was one of the most beautiful women in the world when I was a kid and I have yet to really change my mind. Always loved her temper and her red hair. Plus she was kind of a MILF in The Parent Trap
Tumblr media
Haughty, red hair, hot.
I would have to give up my passport if I didn't submit Maureen O'Hara but also have you seen her? Not only did she look like that (she was called the Queen of Technicolor, though she wasn't a big fan of that sobriquet), she was also very funny and tough as nails. She faced off against Walt Disney in a contract dispute and the legend goes that when someone mentioned her at his deathbed, he sat up and said 'That bitch!'. Her comment on that story is "At least he didn't think of me and say, 'That wimp'." She struggled to get serious roles for a time, saying ""Hollywood would never allow my talent to triumph over my face," so she plays the sexy princess/pirate/harem girl in a LOT of early movies that she referred to as "Tits and Sand" films, she being the tits in question. She also turned down so many leading men and studio bosses (Errol Flynn and Howard Hughes are among her rejects) that there were rumours spread that she was a lesbian. Many egos were battered it seems. I'm including the infamous Lady Godiva scene in the photo propaganda for the sheer Moment of it [link] . It was a bit of a flop critically, but it was one of Clint Eastwood's first film appearances and she said he told her later that he was very glad of the money at the time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She was a very proud Irish woman and when she went for her American citizenship they insisted on referring to her as British (the timeline of Irish independence is a bit wibbly wobbly, we won't get into it here). She refused to accept American citizenship under that condition and argued her way through every level of US immigration she could find, supposedly saying "I'm not responsible for your antiquated records here in Washington", until a judge finally gave up and said "Give her what she wants, just get her out of here". This made her the first ever person seeking US citizenship to be proclaimed Irish on the record!

Mikey Way: “I was borderline terrified a lot of the time My Chemical Romance was active. I was learning the bass in front of 20,000 people every night!”
By Gregory Adams ( Bass Player ) published June 9th 2023
The reunited emo kings’ low-end ranger reveals why he swapped out his signature Fender Mustang for a sparkling new signature Jazz Bass, learning bass in arenas, and how he overcame insecurity about his chops
Full interview under cut:
My Chemical Romance’s reunion has seen bassist Mikey Way thrumming through the high pomp punk of The Black Parade and Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge favorites with a familiar rhythmic fortitude, but keen-eyed band obsessives have probably noticed the musician is no longer sporting the snazzy, silver-flake Squier Mustang signature model Fender built for him back in 2012.
The good news is that’s because, as Fender have just formally announced, Way has a brand-new – but just as glammy – Jazz Bass out now. There’s a good reason why Way’s made the switch: the Jazz Bass is his first love.
Though he started out on guitar, Way got the hang of a four-string in the mid ‘90s while playing a loaned-out Jazz Bass in his pre-My Chemical Romance project, Ray Gun Jones. He upgraded to a silver-finish Jazz of his own by the time MCR started touring in the early ‘00s, but a trailer mishap led to that instrument getting smashed to pieces on a highway.
Way tells Guitar World that he eventually became obsessed with the short-scale sturdiness of a Mustang bass guitar as My Chemical Romance were writing their 2010 full-length, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, after fooling around with a model Duff McKagan had left at North Hollywood’s Mates Rehearsal Studio. By 2012, Way had his Squier model in stores.
It was during the downtime after My Chemical Romance went on hiatus in 2013, though, that the stubbiness of his Mustang became a little hard to handle.
“I stayed away from playing bass for a little while, which is natural – I was just decompressing,” Way explains. “Then, sometime in 2014, I picked up the bass again, to get my chops back, [but] I noticed that the Mustang felt strange to me.”
After reaching out to the folks at Fender, Way got a grip on his playing by stretching out on the longer-necked Jazzes they sent him. Way’s take on the Jazz Bass is outfitted with ’70s-style single-coil pickups, and a thinline “C”-shaped maple neck the bassist says is super-speedy.
The finish is silver, of course, but Way also wanted an aesthetically inkier black pickguard. The headstock, likewise, pops with its matching gloss-black finish.
Speaking with Guitar World, Way gets into the glam and grunge gods who inspired his love of a good sparkle coat, overcoming performance anxiety, and why a steady attack wins the bass race every time.
What were some of the musts when it came to designing this latest signature?
“I’ve been obsessed with the sparkle finish as far back as I can remember. Growing up in the ‘90s, the silver-flake [finish] was big in alternative music. Chris Cornell had the Gretsch Silver Jet, [Daniel Johns] from Silverchair had one – [with] the imagery the Smashing Pumpkins used, they liked sparkles.
“Ace Frehley, of course, was big into flake finishes, and as a kid, you love the larger-than-life, comic book world of Kiss. [And there’s] David Bowie – the glam rock stuff. That flake finish makes me think of so many different things, but that’s why I love it so much.
“I remember being younger and going into stores and seeing a flake finish and being like, 'Oh my god, that’s an expensive [looking guitar] – I can’t afford that, let alone play it.' It was almost intimidating.”
One aesthetic difference between your Mustang model and this Jazz is that you didn’t throw a racing stripe on this one.
“I thought about bringing it back and keeping the continuity. Maybe somewhere down the line we’ll throw a racing stripe on this. The thing with [seeing a] racing stripe was always like, 'This player is a badass!'”
Is there a psychology behind removing the racing stripe, then?
“The psychology behind it is that I forgot about it. When My Chemical Romance was talking about doing reunion shows [in 2019], I’d contacted Michael Schulz from Fender and was like, 'Is it OK if I make a new bass for this [next] era of My Chemical Romance?' I wanted to take my past and bring it to the future – taking my Mustang and melding it with the Jazz Basses that I loved so much.
“I tried to have my cake and eat it, too. I wanted the thinner neck, and I wanted the silver-flake, but I wanted it on a Jazz Bass. They knocked it out of the park immediately.”
Getting back to how you used to admire those silver-flake guitars in the shops, you actually started out as a guitarist, right?
“So, the story goes that my brother [My Chemical Romance vocalist Gerard Way] had a Sears acoustic guitar when he was 10 years old. We would take a shoelace and make a strap, and we would stand on the couch pretending we were in Iron Maiden. And then it got real around ’93-’94, which lines up with the rise of alternative music. You started to see people that looked exactly like you, and they were playing guitar. They were playing Fender Strats!
“My brother got a Mexican Stratocaster, Lake Placid Blue. I found it not too long ago, and Michael from Fender hot-rodded it. That’s how I cut my teeth – that Mexican Stratocaster [was] my first foray into really trying to learn how to play guitar. I would watch bootlegs of concerts, and watch [guitarists’] hands and fingers – Thom Yorke, Billy Corgan, Noel Gallagher, Jonny Greenwood. I would watch what they were doing. It all started from that.
“Bass came out of necessity, twice. Me and my brother had a band called Ray Gun Jones, I guess in ’95-’96. It was kind of Weezer-ish, or us doing a surf-punk thing [with] a little bit of pre-mid-west emo. At the time we were really into Weezer, Jawbreaker, Promise Ring, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Sunny Day Real Estate.
“[Ray Gun Jones] needed a bass player, so my brother was like 'Hey, do you want to play bass for my band?' I was already a huge fan – I’d always tag along to practices. The ex-bass player let me borrow their bass. We had 4-5 songs, and I got the rudimentary from that. In that era, everyone was like, 'I want to be a guitar hero,' but I realized I had a natural knack for [bass]. I picked it up right away.
“Then, with My Chemical Romance, it was the same thing. My brother was like, 'We need a bass player,' and I was like, 'Well, this is familiar' [laughs]. 'Here’s the demo; learn these songs.' They weren’t terribly difficult.”
Was that bass you had borrowed a Fender Jazz?
“Yup, I’ve only ever played Fender. I’ve tried tons of other basses from other companies, but it always feels alien to me.”
You mentioned studying the playing of Thom Yorke or Billy Corgan through those bootleg vids. Were there any bassists that you treated similarly, to understand the mechanics of bass?
“Matt Sharp from Weezer. I tried to ape him in the beginning, but my attack sounds vaguely reminiscent of a Smashing Pumpkins recording. I would learn Siamese Dream and Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and the Blue Album [the band’s 1994 self-titled debut] by Weezer. Those were the three albums that I put the most time into learning. That’s in my DNA.”
How about from a hyper-local perspective. If My Chemical Romance started out playing New Jersey basements and VFW halls, where there any bassists from that scene that inspired you, or that you appreciated?
“Yes! We shared a rehearsal space with this band called Pencey Prep – that was [MCR guitarist] Frank Iero’s original band. John McGuire was their bassist, and he let me borrow his equipment all the time. He taught me fundamentals, and gave me pointers – he taught me a whole heck of a lot.
“I always respected Tim Payne from Thursday, I loved his attack and stage presence. And when I’d watch Gabe Saporta from Midtown, I thought 'This dude is the coolest guy in the room.' He’s got this calm, cool, and collected [presence] that you can’t fake or learn. And then Eben D’amico from Saves the Day – brilliant!
“I would try to learn Saves the Day basslines. They were pretty complex [compared to] what most bands were doing in that scene. Most bands in the post-hardcore scene had simplistic basslines, but Saves the Day did not.
“There’s also Ray Toro, the guitar player of My Chemical Romance. Not only is he truly gifted at guitar, but he’s truly gifted at bass and drums – Ray can do everything. He was instrumental, early on, with showing me the ropes. Ray gave me lessons when I was a novice. I can’t thank him enough for that.”
What kind of pointers was he giving you?
“He showed me proper fretting, or [how to maintain] a steady attack. I got a really great compliment from our front-of-house guy, Jay Rigby. He told me that I’m one of the very few bass players that he doesn’t have to go in and tweak the volume [for]. 'You’re steady, throughout.' I think that’s something that Ray Toro instilled in me: the consistency of attack.
“It’s funny thinking about it, but I was such a novice going into My Chemical Romance that I would bring myself into an anxiety-ridden state of, 'Oh my god, we have a show tonight; I have to start practicing right now.' I would be practicing four to five hours before we played – I’d play the set [in the green room], and then I’d play it again. Other bands would be like, 'What are you doing?' I was so neurotic at that point, because there were so many people around me that were beyond gifted.
“I got pushed into the deep end; you’ve got no choice but to figure it out. Ray and Frank are so gifted that I had to keep up. I didn’t want to ever do the music a disservice.
“That brings me back to the simplicity of the early My Chem basslines. The first album [2002’s I Brought You Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love] was me learning the bass, and somehow [producer] John Naclerio recorded me and said, 'You did a great job,' which I did not expect.
“I thought I was going to go in there and they were going to have to do some studio magic, or someone would come in and play [my] part. I thought of the worst-case scenario, but I went in and did it. I played the bass seriously [enough] by that point.”
What are you generally looking for in a My Chemical Romance bassline?
“What makes it for me is if I do a fill, I’ll only do it once. If you listen to [the band's 2022 comeback single] The Foundations of Decay, any fill on there I only do one time. What’s interesting about The Foundations of Decay is that it’s very loose and run-and-gun. We went in and punched things in for timing, which everyone in the world does, but the meat of that is first-or-second take. Which brings me to someone else who was very instrumental to my bass playing: Doug McKean.
“He’s no longer with us, unfortunately, but he was our engineer from The Black Parade [until his passing in 2022]. He was always a huge cheerleader for me – he instilled confidence in me. He was always good at getting a killer performance out of me.”
What are some of the biggest My Chemical Romance bass moments for you?
“I’ll say that fill in on Foundations. No-one saw that coming.”
There’s a YouTube video out there of someone playing their favorite Mikey Way basslines, some while using your signature Squier Mustang, but one standout in particular is The Black Parade’s The Sharpest Lives.
“What’s funny is Sharpest Lives has a bass solo, and I was terrified of it. I had performance anxiety [through] the 12 years before we broke up – I don’t have it anymore. Somehow when the band got back together, a switch in my brain [got] flipped. [But] while My Chem was active, I was borderline terrified a lot of the time.
“I’m playing with people far above my skill level, I’m playing [on bills] with bands where their bass players are way better than me, [and] our shows were getting massive. We were playing arenas! So not only are you learning the bass, but you’re learning the bass in front of 20,000 people every night. It made me tweak a little, but I think it shaped me into what I became.
“That solo gave me anxiety. It was when we were playing the biggest venues of our career, and it would break for the solo [Way starts singing his ascending bass lick]. I practiced it relentlessly, then it [became] second nature. Later on, it [became my favorite part of the show.”
You’re already playing the Jazz signature in your live show, yeah?
“It’s what I use for the live show. Basically, Fender built [it] for the reunion, and then we made a couple tweaks for when we release it.”
Was there a learning curve at all towards transferring My Chemical Romance songs you’d written on a Mustang onto the Jazz?
“There was Planetary (GO!), a song off Danger Days. I’d guess you’d say the whole thing is a disco beat. It’s dance-y – [Mikey starts singing an octave-popping bassline], I do that for the entirety of the song. I was very happy that I only had to do that on a Mustang, initially [because of the shorter scale]. But going back to what I said, [after] I took a little break, [I] went back to a Jazz Bass.
“I missed the room, or the way my hand went up and down the neck. I wanted to go back to that, so I jumped back in and felt right at home again.”
How many Jazzes are you bringing on the road?
“I bring two basses out, [but] I stopped even switching [during the set]. This is a testament to Fender craftsmanship – that thing stays in tune. It’s got the four-saddle bridge, and it stays in tune so well. I’m a little neurotic so I’ll tune every few songs, but if I went five to six songs you probably wouldn’t even notice.”
What does it mean to you to now have a fully-formed Fender signature model – as opposed to the Squier – and with the body shape you began your career with?
“It’s really a dream come true. It’s funny, in 2002-3 we started touring across the country. I had a Mexican Jazz Bass, but [the band] were like, 'You have to use something with better electronics; better wood. Step it up!' So, I went into the Guitar Center on Route 46 in New Jersey, and at the time Fender had released a special Guitar Center edition that was silver-flake.
“It always bugged me that the pickguard was white – it threw me off, aesthetically, and I was like, 'I’m going to change that pickguard one day.' So, I got that, and I was using that for a while.
“We were out with [Boston emo quartet] Piebald – it was one of our first cross-country tours ever – and one night someone forgot to close the trailer door. We’re driving on the highway, and half the contents spilled out – unfortunately, my bass was a casualty of that.
“But Frank Iero, and his heart of gold, jumped out on the highway in the middle of the night and tried to recover [the bass]. He was like, 'Maybe we can fix it!' I’ll never forget him doing that. He got a chunk of it – it’s in one of our storage units.”

Naruto Modern AU/Hollywood pt.1 - The Uchiha Family & Sasuke.
All types of reasons have led certain people to the level/status of celebrity. We will explore it in this Modern AU of Naruto. Oh yes, starting a new project (regardless of all the stuff in the drafts) as a means to share my lore and practice digital art.
Tumblr media
They are your typical influential family/lineage/clan in the world of celebrity-dom and Hollywood. Taking their root foundation in Madara Uchiha who made a lot of money exploiting the land’s abundant minerals along with Hashirama Senju when they created Konoha. He built the foundation block of the Country’s central bank and police department. Yes, Madara lost most of his wealth through the years to the sin of gambling and failed business ventures. To this point of being a historical comedic fact of the past, his descendant Fugaku Uchiha had to rebrand and start with a "fresh foot" in a different industry; Technology & Scientific Lobbying/Investing. Along with ownership in the industrial prison complex but he’s not telling you the second part.
Tumblr media
Finances magazine "The Ryô Treasury" loves to paint Fugaku as a self-made businessman who worked hard and won the investment lottery. These types of publications love to omit to the public the fact that anyone in the Uchiha clan born after Madara is technically a trust fund kid/nepo baby. Fugaku included since like most of his close and distant relatives were born into the higher class regardless of the money Madara lost throughout the years.
Many historians and the media do their best to conceal the depth of the influence Madara had on the country of fire and cover it up with the "billionaire gone broke" narrative because he had controversial political and social views that led to his fall apart from Hashirama Senju centuries ago.
Tumblr media
Many industries go to the higher clans like the Hyuuga, Uchiha, Aburame & Senju for funding since they own a lot of the country’s resources and various entities. It’s hard to tell because it is well concealed on purpose like how the cheap wine you buy at the grocery store comes from a vineyard owned by a Senju who operates under a different surname.
With all that status and money, Fugaku married Mikoto (from an unknown background) and created the main and most popular unit of his clan with his two sons: Itachi and Sasuke.
Let’s Start with Sasuke:
Tumblr media
He lived, along with his older brother, the typical luxury childhood with a large main mansion, a cottage summer home in France, maids, going to a 7-star school no one can find on Google Maps &, etc. The intense security of such a sheltered childhood created a rebellious fire in him. So, out of the blue at 18yo packed his bags and left his parents' house without warning. He settled on the rough side in the major city of Konoha to reinvent himself. After discarding his surname and blow-drying his hair, he dived into one of his hidden passions; music. With his dad’s funds, purchased a few guitars and started to compose music. Not only for pure love for the art form but in the hope of making a name for himself, to stand on his own feet and not hide in his brother’s shadow anymore. The fact that Itachi’s career was taking off around that time was pocking at his justified sibling inferiority complex (but he’ll never admit it).
After many trials and errors, he was able to befriend a few people while still refusing to disclose his identity. Like a random young guitarist coming up from the struggle, he created the punk rock band Taka along with Suigetsu (2nd guitar), Karin (bass), and Juugo (drums). They went from performing in small clubs to selling out large venues and becoming the most recognizable punk rock figure of their era and sending them on tours across different cities and countries.
Tumblr media
Keep in mind they were able to pierce the market in Iwagakure due to the large rock music scene bringing a new sound standing out from the traditional heavy metal of the country of stone. They couldn’t say the same about other large cities like Sunagakure and Kumogakure who were at that time close to the outside musical influences until recently.
Sasuke took pride in his achievements accomplished without his father’s connections. The band was extremely popular among teens and young adults for their good music, edgy aesthetic, and participation in the punk/emo subculture.
Tumblr media
Let’s not lie, a lot of their female fanbase was in love with the handsome lead singer Sasuke. He was an iconic punk/emo fashion icon for his legendary smoky under-eye makeup and spiky hair. All the members rocked some type of spiky haircut as well who were immensely popular at the time. Regardless of the focus on Sasuke, many of their fans love Suigetsu with his unique looks, great sense of humor, and certified crowd-hyping skills. Karin, the one and only e-girl punk girly, and Juugo, the sweet muscular teddy bear drummer who composed a lot of the band’s songs along with Sasuke. Their sound is akin to Red Jumpsuit Apparatus’s Don’t You Fake It and early day Paramore.
youtube
youtube
Unfortunately, the band disbanded 5 years later for many reasons. First, punk rock’s popularity fell by the wayside and was outshined by rap & hip hop from Kumo (this era was short-lived). Also, Sasuke realized that all the members were growing apart in different ventures for their lives:
- Sasuke: By mistake, his family name was discovered. Somehow, he avoided the fraud accusation but realized he didn’t want to be a singer all his life. He outgrew it Also his father finally reached out to him and promised to guarantee his son’s future career venture if he came back so they could play into the "influential family" unit image Fukagu wanted to create (think of the Kardashians). Being interested in modeling, Sasuke complied.
- Suigetsu: Always wanted to do something in his hometown (Kiri). He kind of went off the spotlight, rumors say he is working with artists from Kiri and is a DJ wearing a full-face helmet, so we might never know…
- Juugo: Always known he had a talent and passion for photography, so he pursued it as a career. After putting a few portfolios out here, he was recruited by the renowned fashion, designer Orochimaru and it’s in his circles where he met A-List fashion model, Kimimaro. They are now engaged.
- Karin: She is now a bass and guitar instructor at the most prestigious music Academy in Konoha. The breakup was tougher on her for many reasons but the fact that Sasuke started dating and is now married to the professional wrestler and fitness influencer Sakura Haruno played a huge role in it at the time but she’s now comfortable with their relationship, and she became the godmother of his daughter.
All these things happening at the same time made the disbandment a little smoother to digest for them but was a huge shock for their fans.
Tumblr media
Sasuke is now a model operating under Orochimaru. His handsome looks, talent, and father’s connections allowed him to make a name for himself. He keeps lending juicy contracts left and right. For some reason, he has regained pride in his family name and wears it publicly. Despite his efforts, he is back to being the Young brother in his parents’ eyes, but he doesn’t care anymore. Him and Itachi are 2 distinct entities at this point and get rarely mentioned together in most professional settings.
Sasuke is now busy and married with a daughter named Sarada. He can’t let these ideas get to him since he has a relatively good public image and enjoys his privacy (he doesn’t share too much about himself or his family with the public). He has blatant rudeness towards paparazzi, interviewers, and anyone talking to him. Pretty privilege allows him to be labeled as an introvert and keep it pushing.

LEE STARKEY. THE YOUNGEST DAUGHTER OF "BEATLE" RINGO STARR IS TODAY A FASHION DESIGNER AND HAS OPENED A FASHION BOUTIQUE IN HOLLYWOOD
The mythical Hollywood of the big stars looks at Lee Starkey, youngest daughter of Ringo Starr, the ex-member of The Beatles. Lee is now twenty-one years old, but she seems younger (“People look at me" –she explains– "and still think that I’m thirteen”) and she has become owner of a “boutique” in the elegant district of Los Angeles, where she sells bright spangles trousers, daring miniskirts and psychedelic fur tunics like if they were hot pastries. The shop is at the heart of the most fashion district of LA, Melrose Avenue, where famous stars like Madonna, Michelle Pfeiffer and Julia Roberts make their purchases.
“Daddy hasn’t helped me with money”, tells Lee, while she shows us her most favourite clothes designed by herself and her thirty-year-old partner Christian Paris. Lee continues explaining that her father gave her moral support and brought lots of friends to the opening of the boutique, which was last month [sic]. “He’s much exited" – she remarks – "that in the end I’ve found something that I love to do”.
Tumblr media
Lee Starkey – that’s Ringo’s real surname – was five years old when her mother, Maureen, and her very famous father divorced in 1975. Both of them married again: her mother with Isaac Tigrett, Hard Rock Cafe founder, and Ringo with the actress Barbara Bach. However, when the youngest daughter of the former Beatle opened her “boutique” in Hollywood both parents attended with her brothers Zak, 25, and Jason, 24 [sic], to wish her luck.
“I’m not an expert of The Beatles”, admits Lee with a smile, adding next: “If I want to know something about them I ask to my father. But I’m a drawer and designer of sixties fashion. Is in those years where I find my inspiration. I’ve tried to bring the vibrations, the colours and the freedom of that style to the nineties”.
Tumblr media
In what there is not any doubt is that with their store, Planet Alice, Lee is making a good business, showing that her idea was spot on. Lee, before being devoted to this, tried to introduce herself to the acting world, went to a make-up school and even she wanted to play drums. In the end she met her partner, Christian Paris, a well-known clothes designer of whom she says: “We are very affectionate to each other and this is platonic”. Paris was already owner of a Planet Alice shop in London, namely in Portobello. Also he owns one of the most fashionable discotheques in London, Alice in Wonderland. Now attending to Lee’s wishes, he has opened a new “boutique” in Hollywood.
“We opened it a month ago, but I can already say that Lee's idea has been successful. The sales demonstrate it”, says Christian, happy, after they’ve achieved to sell clothes that worth 1000$ to a group of Latin visitors from Miami, that they were dressed with clothes bought in Planet Alice. “Lee has a lot of energy and wonderful ideas" – he continues – "and when she starts to work, like today, the cash begins to sound”.
Tumblr media
Ringo Starr and his first wife, Maureen, parents, like we’ve said before, of three children Zak, Jason and Lee, where divorced sixteen years ago, after having lived a great love story since their adolescence. Maureen was eighteen years old when she married Ringo. She worked then in a hairdresser of Liverpool and after marrying she passed of living in a modest neighbourhood with her family to a luxurious and elegant mansion in Tittenhurst Park, without limitation of expenses. However, those happy years would leave to the fret when Ringo, crawled by a vortex of the fame and the popularity, began to stop worrying of her and began to be related with other women. In the divorce demand that finally she had to outline, Maureen mentioned a model, Nancy Andrews, a young and very pretty dark-haired Californian woman, as the cause of the end of her marriage. This romance, however, didn't have a happy ending and time later the famous Beatles' drummer got married with the actress Barbara Bach, who had been married an Italian producer before. "I had never wanted to get divorced" - said Maureen later -."I adored Richie (it is this way she called to Ringo) and I felt a great affection and respect towards him." When her lawyer told her that to obtain the separation she should say to the judge that she didn't stand to live beside his husband, she cried bitterly and time later recognized: "I shouldn’t never have said that, because it was not true."
Tumblr media
The three children of the marriage continued living with their mother, giving them Ringo Starr a generous pension. However, with time, Maureen claimed in the tribunals an increase of it sustaining that, used to the deluxe life that her husband had accustomed them, she had requested little money. "The boys continue living with me" - she said - "and for them I take this step." Each one followed their own road later and, in 1985, Ringo and Maureen became grandparents. Their older son, Zak, then aged nineteen years old and being drummer like his father, had a daughter named Tatia Jayne. Ringo Starr was the first member of the Beatles to become a grandfather. In that occasion Ringo Starr himself, his former-wife, Maureen, and with them their other two children Jason and Lee, they went together to the hospital where the little girl was born. Maureen Kox [sic] - this was her maiden name - married time later the millionaire Isaac Bach [sic] and in 1987 they had a daughter.

FASHION CREDITS: "JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX"
In "Joker: Folie à Deux", director Todd Phillips brings a new, musical twist to Gotham's most notorious characters, with Lady Gaga taking on the role of Harley Quinn.
The film’s visual storytelling is further elevated by renowned costume designer Arianne Phillips, whose intricate designs blend classic Hollywood glamour with dark, psychological undertones. Hair by Frederic Aspiras and makeup by Sarah Tanno-Stewart.
Tumblr media
Harley is introduced in custom marigold and blue mohair cardigans, crafted by the movie’s costume team, and subtly woven with diamond patterns. These diamonds, a nod to her harlequin origins, quietly foreshadow her dark journey. Phillips’ design choices blend symbolic elements with a grounded, human realism, allowing the audience to connect with Harley before her madness fully surfaces.
Phillips, whose contributions are essential to bringing this new vision of Harley to life, draws upon the delicate balance between whimsy and tragedy. Her mastery is evident in every layer of Gaga’s costumes, capturing the tension between Harley’s identity as Quinzel and her gradual shift into Joker’s lover and accomplice. This collaboration continues Phillips’ tradition of injecting meaning into every piece, creating a visual narrative that complements the film’s psychological depth.
Lee’s cozy sweaters set a backstory for the character, according to Phillips: "The idea is that maybe she found it in a thrift store or it belonged to her father".
Tumblr media
Her scruffy vintage Capezio ballet slippers (a reference to Amy Winehouse — who sported a visibly worn-in pair on more than one occasion — and director Todd’s idea) also convey vulnerability. And an origin story.
"There’s a little infantilizing of her in the beginning", says Phillips. "She has this bravado — a fearlessness that you really experience in a young person — and then you see her as her determination grows over time."
Tumblr media
A particularly striking piece is the white silk bias-cut gown Harley wears during the rooftop dance sequence. Created in collaboration with Gaga’s sister, Natali, under her label Topo Studio NY, the dress features criss-cross embellished straps.
Phillips designed the look to evoke the elegance of classic silver-screen icons, blending Harley’s dreamlike fantasy with a cinematic nod to vintage Hollywood.
"Totally Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire", says Phillips, "and [the dress inspiration] was in the script, so I leaned into that".
Tumblr media
Harley also wears a pair of vintage 1938 Bvlgari platinum and diamond ear clips, now part of the Bvlgari Heritage Collection in Rome.
Tumblr media
She completed the look with a silver version of these Bloch Chord T-strap dance heels.
Tumblr media
"The early ‘80s was the time when the East Village scene and CBGB on the Bowery were starting up", says Arianne about the inspiration for Lee’s supposedly thrifted, ‘70s "babydoll, Biba-esque dresses" worn with discordant oversize cardigans and chunky punk rock outerwear. "She has a fake fur jacket and a thrift store men’s sweater. She would have cobbled these looks together, but, still, there’s a vulnerability and bizarre innocence — she’s this sycophant who’s obsessed with Joker. That mix, to me, shows that".
For her casual attire, Lee wore this vintage 1960s faux fur double-breasted peacoat in teal and black, along with vintage floral dresses underneath!
Tumblr media
Her necklace in the shape of a diamond, custom-made by Michael Schmidt Studios, shows the Hermetic Seal of Light: "This symbol, often referred to as the synthesis of alchemy or the Hermetic Seal, hearkens back to ancient Pythagorean philosophy, wherein the square, circle, and the triangle are the emblems of the material body, the soul, and the spirit, the three elements believed to be necessary for alchemical transformation."
Tumblr media
Harley‘s 70s-style brown patchwork leather chevron hobo bag, now lovingly named the "Harley", is a one-of-a-kind piece made by Kilner Goods who uses upcycled materials for her designs.
"I sort of saw it and I didn’t know if it was some sort of a joke or a scam or something. I sort of forwarded it to my friends and family and said ‘Wow, this is cool if it is real'" Nicole Loewen states.
Tumblr media
Arika Nerguiz is actually a primarily dance shoe designer, and the Gaia is a dedicated tango shoe. But Lee makes use of it here as an adorable day shoe while out and about in Gotham City.
Tumblr media
For the Joker & Harley Show bit, Lee dons a striking marigold two-piece set with a smattering of delicate Swarovski crystal and bugle bead strings assembled by Western Costume Co. that references Bob Mackie’s work for Cher.
This one’s designed by Arianne who had it custom-made by her costume team. She also wore custom rainbow-striped platform heels.
Tumblr media
Out of Arkham, Lee gradually shows her support of (or fixation on?) Arthur and his Joker persona by moving up the gallery to sit front row at his trial.
For the courtroom fantasy segment, Lee wears a custom sheer crimson tunic dress with burnout black velvet triangles all over, made by the costume team.
Tumblr media
Back in the courthouse, Lee (Harley) Quinzel wears a vintage Biba-esque navy, flower-print "church"-type dress with an exaggerated Peter Pan collar in contrasting white.
The white diamond-patterned 20/60 dernier tights are the Losanges tights by Emilio Cavallini, who renamed them into the Harlequin tights ($38) after seeing Gaga in them!
Tumblr media
Lee walks down the aisle toward Joker in a custom white bridal V-neck mini dress with a delicate diamond trapunto pattern and gleaming ribbons streaming down the shoulders — "playing into what Arthur would be attracted to," says Arianne. "In her fantasy, and his fantasy, what would that look like?"
Phillips referenced ‘60s icons like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for the block-heel Mary Janes, plus Doctor Zhivago-era Julie Christie and the late ‘60s/‘70s silhouettes of Ossie Clark and Biba. "The dress is pretty inspired by my aunt, who got married in the ‘70s," she adds. "I was a flower girl".
Tumblr media
The adorable white patent leather Mary Jane pumps with double buckled straps are the Alice by Carel ($510).
Tumblr media
The nuptials transition into a raucous jazz performance at the ill-fated (and ominously named) Pogo’s comedy club. Lee smashes the keys on a baby grand as she belts out a banger, wearing a silver metal mesh dress that sways with her bombastic movements, bringing to mind...well, Lady Gaga.
Arianne collaborated with Michael Schmidt Studios on the sparkly stage-wear. "I made a diamond-shaped collar that just gave a certain energy to that scene" she says.
Tumblr media
You‘ll find the diamond shape somehow always in everything Harley wears. Here, it appears in her custom Michael Schmidt Studios drop earrings!
Tumblr media
Arianne whispered to me that Lee also donned a pair of Gianvito Rossi heels in this scene. Even though her feet are mainly hidden by the piano she plays on, I believe that it‘s the Crystelle sandals that sparkle vividly in the shadows.
Tumblr media
We can see Lee getting ready for Arthur‘s final trial, wearing the Kit Undergarments organic cotton triangle soft bra in "Darling" floral print!
Tumblr media
Lee strides into court in full Harley Quinn regalia: a red silk blazer with raised diamond patterns and pleated ruffle cuffs, a theatrical corset and graphic tights.
"Along with embracing her determination, she has taken on this persona inspired by Joker," says Arianne. She imagines that Lee thrifted the red jacket from an old circus uniform, ripped the muslin and ruffle-trimmed corset off a period costume gown, and maybe copped the leather mini from the Gotham outpost of Trash and Vaudeville. "You see the diamond pattern throughout," she adds.
The costume was created using fabrics from International Silks & Woolens which were then custom tucked and pleated by Twins Pleating & Smocking.
Previously worn in white, Lee also chose the Harlequin black 20/60 dernier tights ($38) by Emilio Cavallini!
Tumblr media
Lee completed her dramatic ensemble with a vintage leather bag and these Charles Jourdan Cecil patent leather ankle boots with decorative elastic bands!
Tumblr media
Last but not least, we see Harley Quinn one more time, dressed in her custom black and white ruffle-trimmed corset and custom black chevron jacquard peacoat with red silk lining.
"My idea was that the black and white corset was something that she ripped out of perhaps a proper costume, like an 18th-century dress. We made it out of muslin which is never what you use on the outside of a costume because the texture is unfinished and ragged on the edge." says Arianne.

༺Beautiful Dangerous༻
A slashxreader fanfiction
༺☆༻
Chapter Three
Guns and Horses
☆Tracklist ☆
You shook me - Led Zepplin
The excitement and anxiety ate away at you the entire drive. The closer the city lights grew again, the more your heart raced. The more your memory flooded with the scene of that guy from the record store. You'd thought of him every day since you saw him a week ago. Something about him just couldn't escape you. It was impossible to think of the city and not him as well.
Maybe if there was extra time, you could visit the record store again and maybe he would be there?
Tumblr media
You hadn't packed for a rock show and in turn opted for throwing daisy's leather jacket over your outfit and hoping it made you look like less of a square. You tried to roll your skirt up higher, hoping you looked more rocker and less schoolgirl.
-
Music and voices blared out of the venue. A line formed out the door. The collection of scents that made up the Hollywood air once again filled your nose.
"Troubadour" you read the venue name allowed off its lit up neon sign. Was this dangerous? Is this a dangerous part of town? Fuck. stop it, stop with this dangerous talk. Enough of this. You shook the timid thoughts from your mind. "This way Y/N" Daisy grabbed your hand. "We have another way in" she smiled. Rounding the building to a seedy alleyway in the back, stood a stage door. You pass couples very intimately embracing one another, and a few other shadier characters aligning the dark alleyway. The smell of cigarettes grew stronger back here. Daisy bounced on her feet anxiously and looked around. "Okay Y/N, you wait right here. I'm going to go find Joel. I'll be right back." You start to panic "What? Daisy-" one of the couples embracing in the shadows give you an annoyed look of "pipe down loser". You immediately silence yourself. Don't be a square. "Right back, I promise." Daisy affirmed as she jogged out of sight. You stood alone, in this dark alleyway. You tried to keep your cool and mind your business. Stay as small as possible and maybe you'll be alright, you thought to yourself. You shoved your hands into your leather jacket pockets and leaned against the brick wall , trying to blend in. You gazed up at the Smokey night sky that peeked above the open alley. Not a true night sky and the light pollution from of the city gave it a smoggy under glow. It almost seemed prettier that way..
Tumblr media
Suddenly the stage door burst open and out poured a group of shaggy haired, leather toted men. Laughing and bouncing off one another maniacally and boyishly. A previous conversation coming to a close with a joking "Fuck off man!" Laughed out loud. "Catch you bastards later. Save some Night Train for me!" A voice called out to the rest of the men walking away. He stayed behind and sat his back up against the brick wall across from you. You froze as you saw his face appear from behind a huge mop of frizzy curls.
He didn't seem to notice you staring. He hurriedly pulled out a pack of cigarettes and gave it a casual shake before beginning to flip one out and light it. He quickly planted it between his lips. He moved in a rushed manner, like he only had little time to smoke this cigarette.
This was the guy from the record store. It 100% was him. You remember his curls. His stature, his face. His hands.
Tumblr media
He finally glanced upward and pauses. His rushed demeanor slows to a halt. His eyes narrow and the cigarette in his mouth dances as his lips turn upward in his signature smirk. His pouted lips curve around the cigarette. You dart your eyes to the ground and try your best to recover from obviously staring at him. You feel his eyes on you once more. Be cool. After attempting to act as if you weren't aware of him. You acknowledge his presence again. You can't help to stare at the smoking cigarette pursed between his lips.
He noticed you but did he remember who you were?
"Need a smoke?" He says. An overwhelming desire to say yes overcomes you. So you do. You nod yes and he walks over to you, a smirk still across his lips and his eyes scanning you up and down. You try to avert his gaze. You keep your arms folded across your chest cooly as you can. watching him tower over you as he comes close. A familiar scene.
“Here to see the show?" He asks casually. "Yeah." You show off your insider knowledge courtesy of Daisy. "Some rock band called Guns and Horses." You reply cooly. He laughs. "Roses." He says back. Your expression begins to switch as you realize you messed it up. "Guns n' Roses, is the name." He smiles. You try to recover and remain calm. "You know them then?" You ask, watching him watch you. He steps closer to you and you back up against the wall once more. He takes the cigarette from his mouth and holds it. "Something like that." He says lowly. He slowly brings the cigarette to your lips. You see the rings decorating his fingers. The snake ring. You hold your eye contact with him and cautiously wrap your lips around the cigarette. His cigarette. Your body flushing with the same electricity again as he stares into you. You slowly admit an inhale of his cigarette, being mindful of your previous encounter with a cigarette. You try to seem as though you do this regularly, but you can tell he sees through it. And yet his interest in you doesn't seem to falter. He must remember you, he must. He backs away just as the tension was seemingly so thick, leaving you as the new owner of the cigarette. He walks backwards slightly and smiles again.
"Well. I hope you enjoy the show." He says now very casually again. You take the cigarette from your mouth and hold it in your fingers unnaturally. "Yeah. You too." You glance at your feet. A tinge of dissatisfaction running through you. He opens the stage door and pauses to look at you again.
"Later, Foxey." He says.

From what I’ve gathered, scenecore is just a more “modern” take on scene?? There’s no clear answer it seems.

On the final evening of a trip to China this summer, I went out to dinner with friends at a shopping mall in central Shanghai and had my eyes opened by something unexpected.
Shopping malls have been the rage in China for decades, never falling out of fashion as some would say they did long ago in the country that invented them, the United States. Although a definitive count is hard to come by, in Shanghai alone, China’s largest city and one of its richest, there are said to be hundreds of malls, and I’ve been visiting them frequently since the early 2000s, when I lived in the city.
This might make malls an unlikely backdrop for an insight into ongoing social currents in the country, but that’s exactly what my dinner experience delivered to me on this night. First of all was the location. When I received the invitation, I immediately recognized the address, Middle Huaihai Road, in the city’s elegant former French Concession. And as I approached the place in a car hailed using an Uber-like app, I remembered the neighborhood as having once been home to one of the city’s biggest and most famous fake-goods markets. For decades, this was where airline crews and foreign visitors flocked to purchase knockoffs of Western luxury brands at rock-bottom prices, as well as pirated copies of DVDs of the latest Hollywood releases, among other goods.
Upon approach, the mall announced just how much China—and the world—has changed in the last 10 years, through the gigantic, illuminated lettering of its anchor business: an enormous Prada store, replete with the ritzy and distinctive architecture that normally goes with such things. Other pricey brand stores included Gucci, Miu Miu, and Dolce & Gabbana.
Even before I stepped inside, I knew that I was in for a special experience. Neatly dressed valets and doormen greeted arriving customers pointing them, a bit superfluously, toward the automatic doorways, where even from the outside, the welcome blast of air conditioning could be felt in the warm and thickly humid night.
I have long been aware that Chinese shopping malls, like malls in other countries, exist on a spectrum, from low to high end, and I had been to other high-end malls in China before, including in other cities, from Beijing to Chengdu and Xi’an. The celebration of luxury on display at the IAPM Mall struck me as a whole new level, though, and this went well beyond its collection of commercial tenants. What impressed me more that evening was the clientele. No small number of the people sauntering through its white decor looked like customers in a Paris or Milan fashion show, and, often enough, like the models themselves, complete with looks of haughty self-contentment and practiced ennui.
One of the most prevalent storylines about China in the wake of COVID-19 has been the dearth of consumer demand. This was clearly not the problem, though, for the occupants of the small world that I encountered that evening. There have been related storylines about weak investment data, both from Chinese and foreign sources, as well as an even longer-running topic, an ongoing crisis over overcapacity in the housing market.
I am admittedly limited to appearances, but on this one Friday night the people in this one mall didn’t seem to have a care in the world. Not only were they dressed to kill, but they were filling the many shops and restaurants, where they were eating fancy meals and, yes, spending money and buying things. My visits to more ordinary malls on this trip and other recent visits have revealed very different behaviors to me. The foot traffic in them appears reasonably healthy, even busy, but the stores, from jewelry shops and mobile phone dealers to clothing boutiques, have most often been empty, or close to it, and the food consumption on display heavily favored low-end restaurants and fast food.
The point that I have been working my way toward is that more than ever before, this trip left me with the impression of China as a deeply and increasingly bifurcated society, one in which inequality is high and seems to be growing, where people are living in increasingly separate worlds.
As I noted in my last column, which also drew from this trip, large numbers of Chinese people have recently been seeking ways to exit their society, pessimistically voting with their feet, in effect, about their country’s prospects after a long period of world-beating and transformational economic growth. The question is whether this matters to the country’s leadership, or better put: At what point would an exodus of people be deemed a crisis or emergency?
There is an argument to be made that the flight of many thousands of people who are struggling in China’s current economic environment actually benefits the state, by serving as a form of social release or, in other words, an escape valve. People from the countryside, from third-tier cities in the country’s interior, members of the working and lower-middle classes enjoy little political influence in today’s China. What the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and state pay much closer attention to are the sentiments and behaviors of the more prosperous elements of the society that are concentrated in the giant and relatively rich cities of the country’s east.
If religion, for Karl Marx, was famously called the opium of the masses, then material comfort; dernier cri fashion; access to the most prestigious brands; and lifestyle enhancements, like the endless fancy dining choices on display in the mall I visited, from the sumptuous and elegant Singapore soup dumpling restaurant where we ate to the embarrassment of choices of specialty dessert places (I chose chocolates from an expensive Italian-named place), would seem to be the pacifiers of China’s upper-middle classes.
By the standards of Americans with decent professional incomes, the cost of living in China’s most affluent cities often seems quite reasonable. Foreign luxury goods may be expensive (and heavily taxed), but restaurants, clothes, transportation, and many services are downright cheap. If this is true for an American, it is also true for an affluent Chinese person, like those in evidence on this Friday night.
For me, this helps make sense of a lot of what is going on in China today. Scholars have long explained the post-Tiananmen Square social contract in these terms: Stay out of politics, the sole preserve of the CCP, and focus on that era’s newly sanctified secular goal, getting rich.
Becoming affluent has become much more difficult in recent years, with the Chinese economy’s gradual but steady slowdown, with a trend toward rapid aging well underway, and with the costs of the COVID-19 pandemic and its sluggish aftermath. Brought up to date, a newer disposition might go something like this: If you’re rich, good for you; enjoy, indulge, and don’t make waves. If you’re not, though, well, you’re largely on your own.
When one looks at the rest of the Chinese population—meaning the hundreds of millions who don’t live in the most prosperous eastern cities, don’t rank above the middle class, or worse, live in the countryside—the material comforts and purchasing-power advantages enjoyed by urban elites are shrinking or nonexistent. For many rural Chinese, the most economically vulnerable portion of the population, in fact, state pensions only provide about $25 a month for many retirees.
Understood in this way, my night out at the mall may have offered me the most distorting mirror imaginable about the actual state of China and its economy. Not only are people seeking to leave via emigration, but Chinese also seem to be expressing their feelings and confidence about the future in another, even more telling way: their decisions about when or whether to get married and have children.
Narratives about falling fertility rates have become commonplace around the world in recent years, but that only obscures the drama of what is happening around decisions like these in China. As the demographer Nicholas Eberstadt has pointed out, since 2013, the year that Xi Jinping became the country’s leader, the number of first marriages in the country has fallen by more than half. There were only half as many births in 2022 as just six years earlier, meanwhile, and these numbers are still falling. Not even the collapse of the Soviet Union, Mao Zedong’s Great Famine, or the genocide in Cambodia managed to cut the fertility rate, or average number of births per woman, by as large a percentage as China has seen during these years.
Almost all well-regarded demographers agree that China’s population is going to shrink dramatically over the coming decades. This, of course, doesn’t mean that the country is going to disappear. No society facing declining fertility has figured out how to reverse this trend. To even slow it down, though, China will have to revise its social compact yet again, doing much more to provide opportunity, affordability, and economic security not for the fancy mall shoppers, but for everyone else.

Lynn Kellogg (Marcie, the can-can girl on "Charro!") about Elvis
Interview published on Tiger Beat magazine, July 1969 issue
ELVIS PRESLEY's Hippie Co-Star Thought He Was A Square by Ann Moses
The studio door flew open and out came tall and lovely Lynn Kellogg. Her beautiful golden blonde hair hung down on her shoulders which were covered by an Edwardian style leather coat. Wide wool trousers, a fugal change and huge round sunglasses completed the output.
She looked just as you would imagine the feminine lead in "Hair," the tribal love rock musical, but NOT as you picture the can-can girl and Elvis dramatic movie "Charro!" Just the same, Lynn chose to leave her role in "Hair" on Broadway to star with Elvis in his latest film "Charro!" To be sure, it wasn't Lynn's admiration for Elvis that made her take the part!
---
CHANGED HER MIND
"Not at all!" She will blatantly admit.
"I always felt Elvis was a good singer, but I hated his songs and that hairdo." I was working with Elvis for three weeks in Arizona and one week in Hollywood that changed her mind quick.
Although four weeks isn't much time to get to know someone very well, Lynn says Elvis is such an open and warm person that he's very easy to get to know. And like!
"Once I got to know him, I found he was a very nice gentleman; and a very good actor. I've heard many directors say they would like to use him in a movie as an actor instead of as Elvis Pressley. Working with him and watching him back, I can see what they mean."
---
A NEW ELVIS
In "Charro!" Lynn guarantees the audience will be seeing Elvis the Actor, and Elvis at his finest.
"I think Charro!" is a very good film. I don't like that type of film myself because it's violent and I like to see films that set a good example. For the type of movie it is, it's very good. My new saying is, "Forget about telling it like it is, tell it like it's supposed to be!"
Lynn observed that Elvis was happiest when he was working the hardest.
"He thrives on work. Between shots we fiddled around together and we got into all kinds of harmonizing. His guitarist, Charlie [Hodge], was with him and we all sat around and sang. It was a groove. We all went swimming once at the hotel and that was fun."
---
ELVIS THE MAN
During some of the breaks and filming on the set, Lynn had a chance to learn more about Elvis The Man.
"It may surprise some to know, but Elvis studies Yoga. And he knows all about astrology. I don't know how deeply he goes into it, but he sure knows enough to carry on a lively discussion about it. I think the most important thing about Elvis is not that he knows so much about astrology or whatever, the important thing is he knows where he's at!" "One day I had a short talk with Col. Parker. I said, 'Col. what's the secret to your success?' And he said, 'First, you've got to have a talent.'"
---
TOUR OF EL'S MANSION
When Lynn finished on the film and said goodbye to Elvis he invited her to visit his mansion in Memphis. She was working in Memphis last Christmas, so she dropped by to say hello.
She became excited just recalling the experience. “What was the place like?” I asked.
"Oh! Wow! It's fantastic! He used to show it off to people, really open the door and let them in, but he had to put in new carpets every month, so he quit." "When you first pull up to the gates, the gates had big musical notes on them. Even though it's out in the country, there's traffic going by all the time in a steady stream. The house looks like Tara from 'Gone with the Wind.' Because it was Christmas time, he had blue lights outlining the house and all the way along the driveway."
---
TROPHY ROOM
"When you first go in, off the entryway, there's this one whole entire huge room and the walls are filled with gold records and mementos. Then he has two long rows of drawers, like in a record store, and each one is filled with scrapbooks. Just thousands and thousands of things!"
"I was with some friends and we only stayed about an hour. His wife, Priscilla, was there and some of his friends. We went into the living room and there's a huge double piano--I don't mean two pianos--but two keyboards on one side and it's all in gold leaf!" "His bedroom is really something else! There's a huge bed and on the ceiling he has two television sets. Then there's a button that you push and armrests come down. There's also two radios in the control panel." "He said he wanted to show us his 'closet,' and he just laughed and laughed and he led us into this huge room. That was his 'closet'. It was so wonderful, because he was enjoying all this is much as we were!"
Lynn has kept very busy since filming "Charro!" She has just finished guesting on "The Jonathan Winters Show" and "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour."

My Top 10 Unhinged Movie Recommendations
This isn't top 10 favorite movies. This is my top 10 movies to recommend when I want to make sure that person NEVER asks me for recs again. When I want to go nuclear in my weird shit(TM) this is what I go with, in ascending order. 10. Freaks by Todd Browning
Tumblr media
I love showing this to people. Folks are like "oh hey is this a horror movie?" and then I show it to them. It's not a horror movie, unless Normies are the horror. I love sitting in a room where people slowly realize this isn't a horror moive, but a well done domestic drama. It's just a drama where the cast doesn't look like hollywood stars. It's a god damn masterpiece about a man who is forsaking this family to find mainstream acceptance and how his family fights to save him despite everything. 10/10 Masterpiece. Some folks question whether or not it is exploitative that Todd Browning made this movie. I've made sure the guy is dead so no matter what he's not going to make money either way.
9. The very beginning and very end of Streets of Fire.
Tumblr media
Patrick Willems was right about this. Watch the first bit and then skip to the end to get a dramatic epic of rock music, motorcycles, and Wilhem Defoe fighting in a sledgehammer duel. Beautiful movie. Then people request to see the full movie, the fools. I show the full movie because they know not what they do. Then they don't like it. I told them this at the beginning. There are no sledgehammer fights in the middle of the movie. Why watch this if it's not a musical number or hammer time?
8. The Dark Crystal's bootleg director's cut
Tumblr media
Cowards watch movies in languages they understand. Sometimes they use subtitles to pretend they are open to new experiences. Watch a god damn movie in a fictional language that no one speaks, you plebians. No subtitles, no explanations. Just watch the movie and have a great experience seeing the puppets portray the story using body language. Expand your horizons. It wasn't made on drugs, it just was made with more courage than you or I will ever have. Get fucking weird before you die.
7. Harry Potter and the Deadly Weapons
Tumblr media
The last one was a bootleg reconstructing a lost film. This bootleg creates a new movie. Harry Potter with GUNS. It starts with an old guy shooting out all the lights in a street, and keeps on going from there. You want to see true cinema? Watch Emma Watson shoot Neville Longbottom in the face.
6. Lo
Tumblr media
Romance is dead. There was a romance here. But it got killed and dragged to hell. This man is trying to summon love from hell. All he summons is ham and also overly dramatic soundtrack. Most of the movie is two actors sitting in the dark being assholes to each other. They actually have amazing chemistry. The Demon, Lo, is amazing and my scrungly blorbo or whatever the fuck people say. It's also a musical.
5. The Man From Earth
Tumblr media
This is actually just a good movie. It's like what if a movie was also a bunch of smug people's podcast. However, they all are used to being smug and podcasting as most of them are from Star Trek. Beautiful and wonderful performances about a bunch of nerds arguing about a caveman Buddhist Jesus. It's a palate cleanser for what else is in store.
4. Existenz
Tumblr media
People like to talk about Cronenberg and how shocking Videodrome is or something like that. Thing is people don't talk about this weird shit as much. David Cronenberg is a gamer and he made the ultimate gamer movie: where the scary stuff is physical contact and metaphors for sex. Watch people graft new orfices on to shove gaming consoles into them. What if the matrix had a gun that shoots teeth? Yeah it doesn't have the gunfingerpenis from other cronengerg movies. However it does have a game controller made of asymmetrical nipples.
3. Lair of the White Worm
Tumblr media
Scottish Snake Vampires. That's actually pretty cool and sounds great. Hugh Grant and the Doctor from Doctor Who have a bromance. Why is it on here? Because the director was too horny. Random nudity is the most tame and normal part of this movie. I am not against the human body being used in art. I also think people shouldn't be ashamed of their bodies.
Except this director. He ends the movie with Hugh Grant lifting up Peter Capaldi's kilt and Capaldi bites him. Want to make movie night uncomfortable for everyone? Show this. Porn is less horny.
2. Wizards
Tumblr media
This movie has so many great bits. The thing is you know about the great bits because no one wants to watch the whole thing. Imagine a movie with all the issues of Lair of the White Worm, while also made by a man who is by volume 80% cocaine, 10% rivalry with R. Crumb, and 10% mommy issues. Then have Mark Hamil show up for like five minutes. Then turn it into a commentary on fascist propaganda. It's the greatest artistic achievement in making movies that will make no one happy at movie night.
Possession (uncut version)
Tumblr media
This is the nuclear option. If i don't want people to talk to me ever again, I'll show them this movie. You want to see a film made by the most Divorced man ever? Sure let's watch this. Elon Musk wishes he was this movie, but he, like everyone who sees this film, is a coward. The fucked up film that was banned in the UK for decades tells us the truly greatest fear of men: A version of the man who is a better husband than they are, especially if it's a living pile of raw viscera that is better at satisfying their spouse in bed.
No one i've shown this movie to has talked to me afterwards. I use it like pest control folks used DDT back in the day. Ironically, the movie has the same effect on Condor eggs. One day, however, i will show this to someone and they will like it. In that case, I will have three options:
-The person will be my new best friend.
-The person will be a cinderella-glass-slipper true love fit for me.
-This person will kill me in the next 24 hours.
All three of these will be true. The person who fits this will inherit my social media accounts, and be cursed with them until they complete this cycle again with someone else.
Anyways thank you for liking and subscribing to my Ted Talk.

The Nirvana Unplugged:
Eddie x Gn!reader
No Trigger Warning, a little bit of angst I guess ?
December 16th 1993,
You and Eddie have been dating for 3 years now. You both met at a Dio concert and have been inseparable ever since. You’re currently both living in Chicago. You share a small one bedroom apartment. You’re working at the record store just around the corner while Eddie and Corroded Coffin are trying to make it big.
As every evening at 6:30pm, you finally arrive home right after closing the store and Eddie is already home and waiting for you. When you come into the apartment, you can hear Eddie jamming on Sweetheart. You recognize the song he is strumming as Hollywood Black from Dio’s latest album. You take your shoes off, wash your hands and quietly join Eddie in the living room as not to disturb him, which failed because as soon as Eddie sees you, he put his guitar down and get up to kiss you on the lips. You kiss him back before slumping on the couch.
“Baby?” You ask shyly.
“Yeah Swetheart ?” Eddie answers while sitting next to you on the couch.
“There is the MTV Unplugged tonight and I was wondering if… maybe we could… I don’t know, watch it?” You ask hesitantly.
“Since when do you watch MTV?” Eddie asks, laughing.
You hide that Eddie’s comment hurt you and keep going.
“Okay I usually don’t watch MTV, but tonight they invited my current favorite band…” You say, hoping to convince Eddie.
“They invited Rage Against the Machine?” Eddie asks, baffled.
“Eddie my current favorite band is… actually not a metal band…”
Eddie looks at you like you grew a second head. “And you want to make me listen to some trendy crap?” Eddie asks, he doesn’t really seems opened to discover the band.
“Eddie, something can be both popular and good!” You say, hurt by Eddie’s assumptions. “Besides, you hate when someone judges your music tastes but right now you’re doing the exact same thing to me” you answer, both irritated and hurt. Eddie has the decency to look sorry, he even places a small kiss on your temple as an apology.
“What’s the name’s band?” Eddie asks you, mainly to show you that he cares about you and your interests.
“Nirvana…” you hesitantly answer.
Eddie suddenly gets up from the couch and shakes his head. “Nope, nope. Nope”.
You get up as well. “Eddie… you didn’t even give them a listen and you’re judging them…”
“I judge them because to have the hype they have it means they are fucking conformists! Besides to be on MTV it would mean they are doing those pop music craps we hear every time we turn the radio on.”
You let out a huge sigh of frustration. “Eddie… They are a rock band Eddie! A punk rock band on MTV !”
“If they are on MTV it means they conform so they can’t be that punk rock. Besides, artists with their fame obviously do this for money, and that is not my vision of music” Eddie argues.
“So you’re telling me that if you make it big you’ll only do music for money?” You retort back.
“No! Never ! But I would never accept a contract with MTV !” Eddie fires back at you.
“Stop being a hypocrite Eddie ! Just listen to one of their goddamn songs before judging! They didn’t even want to be famous! They were from the underground scene at first !” You say, getting even more passionate in your argumentation.
“Baby, with all respect due, in a year, when everyone will forget about them, including you, you’ll look back at this conversation and you’ll be like : you were right Eddie, I was just listening to them because they were popular”
“No I won’t Eddie! Because I genuinely like what they do ! You should know better than anyone else that I don’t listen to music for the fame of the artists.” You say, frustrated.
“Or because they are your new celebrity crushes. Maybe your ‘metalhead phase’ is over. In Two weeks you’re gonna leave me for a punk rock wannabe rockstar dressing like Nirvana’s members !” Eddie says, feeling really insecure at the moment.
Your facial expression soften. “Eddie… first of all I still love metal music… second of all you’re not a phase… I thought we were past that… I love you. For who you are. Not only because I love metalheads. But because I like your personality, because I like who you are inside as well.” You tell him earnestly.
When Eddie doesn’t answer you keep going. “Please, I ask you to listen before judging them…” you say while rummaging into your bag.
“Sweetheart… we both know I won’t like it so why losing both our times. Watch your thing if you want. I'll go out with the boys"
“Please Eddie” you borderline beg. “I want you to listen before making your mind on if you go out with the boys or watch the Unplugged with me…”
Eddie let out a huge sigh. “Baby… I love you but I’m convinced their music is gonna be those kind of crap I hear on the radio when I go to stores or when I was selling weed at parties in high school. It’s not my type of music.. and I didn’t know it was yours”
“Eddie I can swear to you that it’s not Pop music! I hate pop music” You say while finally finding the Bleach album in your bag. “And their first album is the best! Please Eddie… I discovered them at the record store not on some crappy radio station. Trust me…”
Eddie ends up caving in. “I give you one song to convince me.”
You almost jump up and down and run to the CD player, you put the CD in and put it on the seventh track: Negative Creep.
Kurt and Krist’s first strums echo in the apartment, Eddie is positively surprised by what he is hearing, at half of the song you can even spot him head-banging and play the air guitar. You smile when you spot your boyfriend being so entranced by the music that he forgot his preconceived ideas about Nirvana. When the song ends, you look at Eddie hopeful.
“That was pretty sick” Eddie ends up saying. “I understand why you love them, they are not some pop crap…” Eddie admits.
“Told ya!” You proudly say. “You should trust me Eds, I work in a record store after all.”
Eddie kisses the crown of your head “I’m sorry for doubting your excellent musical taste my darling” Eddie says in a theatrical voice.
“Does that mean you’re gonna watch the Unplugged with me?” You hopefully ask.
Eddie hugs you from behind and says in your ear “I will make an effort to watch the insufferable channel that is MTV to watch it with you”. Once he’s done with his statement, Eddie kisses your cheek and then your neck before turning you around so you face him. As soon as you’re face to face, you lean in and kiss Eddie’s lips. “Thank you kind sir, for sharing this moment with me.” You say before sitting on the couch together.
An hour later, you and Eddie are watching Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged, not knowing that you’re watching what will be one of Nirvana’s last concert. You don’t know yet that this performance will be considered one of the greatest performance in the history of Rock music but you and Eddie both praised the concert. When you saw the stage you were so excited and told Eddie how bold of a move it was to create a setting resembling a funeral, especially for a rock concert. You were surprised when members of a group named Meat Puppet came on stage with them. And you were a bit disappointed when they didn’t do an encore, but Eddie reminded you that after all, they are not-conformist at all. Eddie even told you he was so happy and baffled they decided to be non-conformist on MTV. According to him, this band will have a huge and long-lasting impact on the rock n roll scene. Eddie even told you that if they ever had a concert in a Chicago, he’ll come with you.
At the end of the concert, after turning the TV off, you told Eddie how they didn’t play most of their hits. Even before seeing what the critics had to say, you and Eddie both agreed that this performance wouldn’t be forgotten, and you were right.

jon's home away from home, the sequel since setting up camp in the sunshine state to work on seaquest dsv, jon brandis has ventured from his hotel home in search of amusement. here, jon’s mom, mary, tells bop’s cathee what her son does for florida fun:
cathee: last month, you told us jon would rather play pool than swim in a pool. mary: yeah, there is a billiard parlor that is right around the corner [from our hotel]. but it's not walking distance; he has to drive to it.
cathee: is jon still driving the car the seaquest people loaned him?mary: yeah. a gold toyota camry, brand-new. he has been driving around, getting to know the area. he is finding his way around, which is surprising. it was a brand-new area, so we got maps, and he asked me to write out directions on little 3x5 cards to things like malls and the movie theater, to and from the studio and [the video store]. he carries them in his car, but i knew that once he did it a couple times, he wouldn't need them.
cathee: so i take it that jon the movie buff has been seeing some movies? mary: one of the first things that he did when we got here was go and find the nearest video store so he could sign up and start renting movies! and he found a really nice movie theater complex. he has gone to the movies with me, or he goes with his dad [greg, when he's visiting from los angeles]. i don't know if they've gone to the movies together, but jon has been hanging out with ted raimi and marco sanchez from the show. he has gotten a lot closer with the returning cast members, like roy scheider, don franklin, ted and marco. and, of course, darwin!
cathee: has jon made other friends in florida? mary: yeah, he's met some people in production. there are some young people working in the production office, so he'll go get a coffee and just sit there and talk to them.
cathee: are there any cool coffeehouses nearby? mary: that is one of the things that he misses, that they don't have a lot of. that and the vintage shops. jon really misses [coffeehouses] and venice beach and the shops on] melrose avenue.
cathee: so where does he go instead? mary: he's been to disney world and epcot center and the disney studios. jon has gone to disney world three times already. he does the voice [of mozenrath, the evil wizard] on the aladdin cartoon for disney so, well, they take him around to anything he wants to go on, and he loves it. it is nice that he gets that special treatment and all they ask is that he pose for a couple of pictures. oh, he also hangs out at the hard rock cafe. he has been there several times. it is right on the universal lot. there's also a sea world that jon's been to with one of his friends. he's also been to the new planet hollywood restaurant.
cathee: well, it sounds like there's enough to keep jon entertained! thanks again for all the details, mary.

Episode 190: Did Stanley Kubrick direct the moon landings? *IS LIVE*! Image 01: Ever since we landed on the moon, conspiracy theorists have claimed the moon landings were an elaborate hoax. Image 02: Conspiracy theorists point to several photo and video anomalies as proof that the lunar landings were filmed on a Hollywood sound stage. Are those stage lights in the astronaut’s helmet or just a strange reflection? Image 03: Is that a lunar rock, or a stage pro labeled “C”? Image 04: How did they shoot the astronauts leaving the moon? Were there wires tied to the capsule? Image 05: In 1968 Stanley Kubrick blew audiences away when he released “2001: A Space Odyssey.” The film utilized special effects nobody had ever seen before to depict space travel. Could these same techniques be used to depict the Apollo missions? Image 06: Some believe Kubrick’s “The Shining” holds clues about his role in faking the moon landings. Could the patriotic suit, American flag, and eagle on the hotel owner’s desk be representative of NASA’s Apollo missions? Image 07: A tapestry that appears to look like rockets matches a set of twins (gemini missions). Image 08: Tang (astronaut food) and Calumet (genocide reference) is seen in the store room. Image 09: Danny wears an Apollo 11 sweater as he walks to room 237. The moon orbital distance from Earth is approx. 237,000 miles. Image 10: Does that say “All” or “A11”?! What do you guys think? Was Kubrick trying to tell us he directed the moon landings?!
