“Find Prisoner at Windsor Is Much Wanted Criminal,” North Bay Nugget. January 7, 1931. Page 1. --- Leo Mitchell Has Prison Record All Over United States --- Windsor, Jan. 7. — (Special)— Leo Mitchell, 51, now in the county Jail pending his removal to Portsmouth penitentiary to commence a three year term, has been revealed by James R Wilkinson, superintendent of the Windsor Police Identification Bureau, as one of the most notorious criminals on the North American continent. He at one time was an associate of Gerald Chapman, executed some years ago, for murder by the State of Connecticut.

Apart from his present plight, Mitchell has only been In trouble In Canada once before. In 1902, the authorities at Welland, Ont., broadcast the fact that they wanted to question him in connection with a safe blowing episode that occurred in the town, one that bore the unmistakable trade mark of the master cracksman, Mitchell.

Mitchell, in addition to having served terms in scores of smaller jails throughout the United States, has also had his name on the registers of Atlanta, Ga., Leavenworth, Ossining, Auburn, and the Detroit House of Correction.

Mitchell la alleged to have participated in a gigantic jewelry robbery that occurred at Rochester, N.Y, some years ago after a safe had been cracked. On Christmas Day, 1924, together with six other desperate criminals, he participated In a spectacular jail delivery from the Lucas county institution in Toledo, when two deputy sheriffs were slain when they tried to frustrate it. He was also a member of the notorious Gerald Chapman— "Dutch" Anderson gang. Anderson was fatally wounded in a pistol battle with a Muskegon, Mich., patrolman, the two dying within 15 minutes of each other. Chapman, his other partner in crime was executed at the Connecticut state prison In 1926 for the murder of a policeman.

[AL: Mitchell had indeed been in Kingston Penitentiary before. In 1902, he came to the prison as 21 year old for 3 years for burglary. He was inmate D-592, worked mostly in the stone pile and stone shed, was a constant trouble maker for the period (giving impudence, refusing to work, smuggling newspapers, lending money to other prisoners, instigating fights with guards and inmates, and chewing gum”) and was released through earned remission in January 1905. He came back 30 years later, 51 years of age, still married, but with a long list of incarcerations including the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus on top of the other prisons listed in the above news story. He was wanted as well for other crimes in the United States but was sentenced in January 1931 for illegal possession of a firearm. During his term starting in 1931, he was a much changed and less troublesome man, the kind of recividist and professional criminal who in their older age are useful to keeping order and staying quiet. He worked in the library at Kingston Penitentiary, and complained mostly of the poor food. He was deported to face charges in the United States in July 1933.]

This list has been a little while coming, and it still isn’t finished because my school has decided that they won’t return until mid-January, so I can’t finish it yet. Which is frustrating, but we’ll continue on! So this year I’ve decided to pick 24 books to read.
