Amuro's meeting with Lt. Matilda Ajan gave me a couple realizations.
Between a messy bedroom, being an anti-social genius, a strained paternal relationship, and now a fondness for redheads, Miorine Rembran is never ever beating the Amuro Ray allegations^. If these two ever meet in a crossover, any attempts at friendship will entirely depend on whether either is feeling a bout of self-loathing at the time.
I was also reminded that, it is a good idea to double-check conventional fan wisdom, because I have been informed several times in good faith that the Newtype space magic that Gundam's become famous for came out of left field in the original, but this scene seems to contradict with straightforward foreshadowing: Amuro's not denying the existence of espers here, only the possibility that he might be one, thus implying that there is probability that they exist in this setting (and since esper is a reasonably common term in Japanese science fiction in general, it makes sense that the audience would be expected to understand this without explanation or disbelief).
In addition, Amuro's denial feels like a callback to the conversation between Char and his lieutenant, Dren, in episode 01, where Dren is not denying that the Federation might be developing more advanced mobile suits, but merely expressing his disbelief that they would be doing so in this particular location.
And since Dren was proven wrong earlier, this gives precedent for the audience to consider, well, what if Amuro is wrong too? What if he is a psychic like Matilda says?
I don't know yet if the show offers any foreshadowing beyond that, but between this scene and genre conventions, I don't think bringing psychic stuff later into this story is as unreasonable as I've seen some people claim.
^With one notable difference being that her love life goes in a much happier direction than poor Amuro's.
#anime#mobile suit gundam#mobile suit gundam: the witch from mercury#amuro ray#matilda ajan#miorine rembran#suletta mercury#dren#char aznable#newtypes#at this point i would be genuinely interested in a crossover with white base meeting earth house#i think it would be neat#give amuro one of those super extra secret gundam suits developed in various one year war gaidens over the years#let him and suletta team up#c'mon super robot wars i believe in you

Robot Wars was one of my favorite shows growing up (along with Junkyard Wars)!
Matilda was always my favorite House Bot, I love her cute little chainsaw tail!
I've never seen robot wars but i am a huge BattleBots enjoyer... from the sound of it it's the American equivalent! if you've watched any BattleBots I have to ask your favorite bot. I'm a ribbot fan always and forever
I saw most of one (1) episode of the American equivalent Battlebots, last night (and it’s REALLY good wow!!!!) but from the one episode I saw, it had Bite Force, Blacksmith, Duck, Free Shipping, Mecha Rampage, Sub-Zero, and Huge.
And bro, I fucking ADORE Huge. I’m gonna see if I can watch more. Hopefully it doesn’t get in the way of the Robot Wars marathon Red and I are on lmao

do you have any book recommendations beyond classic lit + Jane Austen? Love your blog by the way!
Thanks! I read/have read a ton of books. My favourite genre as a child was fantasy, but I read almost everything except true crime*, thrillers, murder mysteries, self-help, and biography. But I do sometimes read those, my favourite thriller is Sometimes I Lie by Alice Feeney. I'm going to start with children's books because honestly, I find so much imagination in that genre.
Children's/YA Books: Gail Carson Levine, specifically The Princess Tales 1 & 2, and Ella Enchanted, among others Jean Little/Kit Pearson - these authors have the same vibe to me. Willow and Twig is a favourite from the first one, The Guests of War trilogy and Awake and Dreaming from the other. They both write coming of age novels for girls, both Canadian. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs - I loved the whole trilogy (haven't watched the movie). The story being based around real antique trick photos is my favourite part The Echorium Sequence by Katherine Roberts - a trilogy of books about magical singers with blue hair and their interactions with half-human magical creatures Margaret Peterson Haddix, specifically Running Out of Time, the Shadow Children series, and Double Identity. Margaret Buffie, who writes stories about teenage girls and ghosts. Also Canadian, which I guess isn't that surprising. The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. Re-read it last summer and it's as good as I remembered. Roald Dahl, I really loved Matilda as a child, it's been fun to read some of these novels with my kids. Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Louis Sachar - and it's sequels. Amazingly quirky and funny stories about a class of students in a weird school
Fantasy: Mercedes Lackey, specifically the Five Hundred Kingdoms series and The Obsidian universe. I also loved the Elvenbane series, but due to the death of Andre Norton it may never be finished. I would advise caution if sexual assault is triggering for you, the ones I like are mostly free of it but that can come up in her other works. Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien - obviously. Also loved The Hobbit, have not read further The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin - the book opens with the triggering of an apocalypse. The world contains people who can control earthquakes A Baroque Fable by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro - this book is so hilarious but I don't know if anyone has heard about it Once Upon a Winter's Night by Dennis L. McKiernan - and it's sequels. This is a romance retold fairy tale series
Science Fiction: Michael Crichton - who spans a bunch of genres but I'll put him here. I've read everything he's written and I recommend most of it. State of Fear has not aged well. His books are very fast-paced and Timeline has one of the best enemies to lovers. Orson Scott Card - I am aware, but Ender's Game is a masterpiece. He also has this single novel called Magic Street that is a sequel to A Midsummer Night's Dream. I also loved Memories of Earth but it's been a while since I read it. I, Robot by Issac Asimov - short stories about artificial intelligence and how it might go weird
Graphic novels: Astro City by Kurt Busiek - superhero, but more focused on how living in that world would affect normal people Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra - every male on earth dies, except for one, and his monkey Fables by Bill Willlingham - after being attacked by an army of wooden soldiers, fairy tale characters and creatures seek refuge in a non-magical world (ours) Nimona by ND Stevenson - a villain gains a shape-shifting sidekick, but she is not what she seems Scurry by Mac Smith - post-apocalyptic earth, the main characters are all surviving mice. Best artwork I've ever seen in a graphic novel American Vampire by Scott Snyder- vampires have different traits depending on their home country, this is about the new, American species. Asterix and Obelix by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo - a small group of powerful Gauls defend themselves against the Romans using a magical potion
Non Fiction: Stephan Pinker, I've read both of his trilogies on language and the brain. Trying to get through his huge book about violence The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks - writen by a neurologist, fascinating book Doing Harm: The Truth About How Bad Medicine and Lazy Science Leave Women Dismissed, Misdiagnosed, and Sick by Maya Dusenbery - what it says on the tin
Toddler/Young Child Books: The Monster at the End of This Book by Jon Stone - I give you a 100% guarantee that if you read this book aloud, the kids will be fascinated. It is literally always a hit Robert Munsch - most of his books are amazing, but if you don't want to cry, DO NOT read the backstory of Love You Forever. The Paper Bag Princess was one of my favourites as a child. Little Critter - only the older ones, the new ones are religious for some reason. Just for You and I Was So Mad were favourites for my kids. Early lesson in unreliable narrators. Phoebe Gilman - Something From Nothing, the Jillian Jiggs series, The Balloon Tree... so many good ones! Really good illustrations too Little Pea by Amy Krouse Rosenthal - a book about a pea who hates eating candy. This book is fun to read and my kids loved it (I have the box set) The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak - kids love when adults have to do weird things I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen - perfect opportunity to do a lot of funny voices The Mitten by Jan Brett - a whole bunch of animals squeeze into a mitten. That's the whole thing. It's great. The Very Cranky Bear by Nick Bland - and the rest of the series. These are fun to read because they rhyme. Jonathan Stutzman - my kids LOVE Tiny T. Rex and the Llama series. We haven't read the others An Elephant & Piggie by Mo Willems - we have this entire series, they are a delight. An elephant and pig are very silly friends. Good drawings Dr. Seuss - be careful with him though, his books are quite long and can be hard to read, so I recommend waiting until your kids are a bit older. But The Lorax slaps and my personal favourite as a kid was The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins
Other: Still Alice by Lisa Genova - or any of her books really. She is a neuroscientist and her books are really interesting explorations of different disorders. Book is better than the movie Warm Bodies by Issac Marion - zombie Romeo and Juliet Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder - a novel that is also an intro to philosophy course Calvin and Hobbes - I own all of them, so excited for when my kids can understand them. I also love The Far Side, Zits, and the earlier Dilbert comics The Women in Black by Madeleine St. John - this book is absolutely charming. I saw the Netflix movie and then bought it right away.
*I avoid true crime because I have heard that the genre causes harassment to victim's families
General Note: I am aware that some of these authors are now considered controversial, some for more serious reasons than others. Sometimes flawed people make really good art. I mean, flawed people make all art because nobody on earth is perfect.

Read During Recovery: pt 3
(part 1 here, part 2 here)
This is starting to push the limits of what could be considered "recovery"- I'm still healing up, but I've gone back to work and such. Nevertheless, I'm enjoying having so much time to read and I'm hoping I can keep the habit even after things go back to normal. Without further ado, let's get to the books!
Paint by Magic by Kathryn Reiss
My first DNF (Did Not Finish) since I started reading again! That's an accomplishment, of sorts.
I picked this one up because I want to read more current middle grade- both as market research and because we're living through something of a middle grade renaissance. There's more good MG on the market than ever, and it's grounded in people's specific lived experiences.
The first warning sign for me should have been that the copyright date on this one was 2004. But i continued anyway, because hey, a good MG is eternal. This one... was not.
I'm not going to talk too much smack about this specific book, because this is my professional blog and I want to lift other writers up, not tear them down. But this is a strong Not Recommended.
The Sanctuary Sparrow by Ellis Peters
The Brother Cadfael mysteries are rapidly becoming my go-to comfort reads-- if I want to recuperate after a bad book, or an emotionally taxing book, this is where I go. They're like Redwall for grownups-- a little short on the heroic mice, but full of adventure mixed with Soothing Abbey Time. The foreground is full of lovely walks in the garden, tasty lavishly described meals, and small, beautiful miracles; the background is full of the excitement, and horror, of a civil war.
The Sanctuary Sparrow is one of Brother Cadfael's better outings- the mystery is straightforward, but neither so obvious that you'll immediately grasp what's going on nor so convoluted that you'll never figure it out on your own. Liliwin- our Wrongly Accused Innocent- is a charming secondary protagonist, and the medieval life stuff I really enjoy here gets a nice spot in the foreground. Strong recommend.
Lord Peter Views the Body by Dorothy L Sayers
This is a collection of short detective stories about the indefatigable Lord Peter Wimsey and his inability to keep his nose out of other folks' business. It also spawned an 11,000 note post on my personal blog about how one story contains a sympathetic depiction of a crossdressing thief and another teaches you 15 different slurs for Italians.
It's hard to say whether I recommend this one. On the one hand you've got fantastic stories like "The Abominable History of the Man with Copper Fingers", "The Piscatorial Farce of the Stolen Stomach", and a personal favourite, "The Learned Adventure of the Dragon's Head" (In which Lord Peter gets to be the Weird Middle Grade Uncle!). On the other hand, you have "The Fascinating Problem of Uncle Meleager's Will", which is just bad! It's mean-spirited and the scaffolding for an okay crossword puzzle. I'm gonna say recommend, but not every story in here is worth reading.
The Pumpkin Princess and the Forever Night by Stephen Banbury
This one was just a delight all the way through. Grown in a lab for me specifically. It's about a young orphan girl who's adopted by the Pumpkin King and becomes the Pumpkin Princess of a spooky, Halloween themed land. It's like The Nightmare Before Christmas meets Matilda.
There's a vampire Boy Inventor who makes little steampunk robots. There's the world's most autistic witch. There's a ghost who writes murder mysteries.
Strong recommend- if you like the spooky but not creepy side of Halloween, if you want a good adoption story, or if you like traumatized protagonists blossoming with love and books- this one's for you.
The Devil's Novice by Ellis Peters
Another Brother Cadfael! This one was also pretty darn good- it's about a young man who's desperately trying to become a novice at the monastery, but something is deeply Wrong With Him. He's embroiled in mystery, and only one nosy old man can save the day...
Strong recommend, this is another great outing from Brother Cadfael, and if you like the rest of the series you will like this too.
I read even more books this week but this post is getting entirely too long- look out for a part 4 later this week!!
Currently reading: The Lumbering Giants of Windy Pines by Mo Netz, No One Leaves the Castle by Christopher Healy; Rien's Rebellion Book 1: Kingdom by CZ Edwards

So in regards to these guys
Their Edd,Matt,Tom and Tords twin sisters rather than female genderbent versions
Their all dating eachother too unlike their brothers (although TBH they might do too just to spite their sisters who tease them alot)
Tori doesn't have a robot arm and her and Tord aren't The Red Leader but are the same rank (Tori is also slightly older)
Rather than their brothers being flirty/close to the boyfriend's.......demon mama got all four girls
Their personalities are the same but Tamara is probably happier due to her three Girlfriend's
Also the events of The End likely don't happen so Tord probably lost his arm during a war/battle
Also Tord and Tori can grow demon wings if they wanted to
Ell and Edd do love drawing/making comics
De bapies will get along well with them
Tori and Tord will collectively torture Diamonds brother really bad alongside a few others
They do have a good relationship with their father whose also in their army and might either me directly the ruler or a higher rank
Tamara/Tom will most likely try getting Shelby drunk (Beta would definitely be against it and try but they all get along well)
Matt/Matilda would probably love Pinkie since they'd all likely have similar personalities
Theyd get along well with Copper and Gold and Cheesecake too
And next are the neighbors and for a quick heads up they'd get along well with de bapies and Minus gang too surprisingly
Oooh :O

Episode 24: Black Tri-Star
i wanna see char's gouf custom
this episode has a fairly lengthy recap, which mostly is just reminding me that the beam saber is a really good weapon, just 5 degrees to the left of a lightsaber. works really well
kycilia wants more resources, but the military is worried about their authority. you live under a dictatorship! you should probably just go along with what she says!
oh hey char's coming back! been like 11 or 12 episodes since we've seen him, so it'll be good to have him back
also, i like that kycilia has the mask covering the parts of her face that char's mask doesn't.
so kycilia's in charge of the moon, and is sending some new guys to help m'quve. thank you narrator!
also, it's crazy how wide in scale this war manages to feel even though we haven't seen any battles that involved more than the white base and one or two small allies on the federation side
so there's the g-fighter, and then also powerup parts?
amuro, if you promise to fix something you gotta follow through! though fraw bow shouldn't kick haro, so i guess it breaks even
everyone getting their picture taken with matilda is a decent bit, though it's kai's whining that really makes it
ok shenanigans are OVER it is time for WAR
oh, the black tri-stars have new mobile suits. and they captured revil?
if i were these guys i would not be nearly this casual about discussing the spy stuff they're doing
amuro now finding actual common ground with matilda, after like 15 episodes of having this crush. i do like the emphasis on creation
the black tri-stars seem a bit generic, but maybe i'll change my mind after they do stuff
i like the sense of progression in the zeon mobile suits. they all feel like they share a design philosophy, and possibly parts. do standard federation forces have mobile suits yet?
gonna be pissed if the kids die
sayla's piloting the g-fighter? wondering what the g-armor is now
i really like the new zeon mobile suits. pretty cool, feels even more "real robot" than what we've had so far in this show
the g-armor feels like a really blatant demand for more toys, but oh well
the fight works, and i do like the black tri-star guy being put on the back foot because the trojan horse pulled out another crazy new weapon
too late? what do you mean by too late?
kai, you may be useless but at least you aren't piloting the guntank. you aren't useless either
jet stream attack? unclear what exactly the deal is here, i guess three mobile suits working together in unison is enough to be its own attack? or they’re hiding behind each other
not sure this music is really appropriate for scoring the scene in which matilda was just killed!
at least amuro got one of them. black tri-stars, more like black di-stars? has anyone else made that joke?
spy guy should probably get a better poker face
rip matilda. i like the sad cover of the opening
this shows body count is really something! i knew gundam was known for killing lots of characters, but i sort of assumed that was after they'd secured their status as moneymakers and could just do what they wanted as long as they introduced enough new toys

haha i didn't miss ten days of this, YOU missed ten days of this
you know how it is. games under the cut.
14. A solo TTRPG you played this year
Well, I've played a bunch on my podcast (cough cough go listen to Alone at the Table) but I'd be remiss not to shout out Notorious by Jason Price. It fulfills all my Star Wars dreams and it was so easy to get sucked into play! (don't @ me about the episodes of this I still have to edit)
15. A fun scene you played this year
Probably when my 60-something diner owner Denise who is on the hunt for her niece who has gone missing (multiverse accident, don't worry about it), was driving an unconscious man and huge bloodhound named Matilda to the hospital, jamming to some trucker tunes, and the unconscious man woke suddenly - it became apparent almost immediately that he had lost a few years of time.
16. A character that became something completely different than the original plan
Well, I supposed Cecilia works for this (she's the aforementioned missing niece). I'd thought she was kind of a cool, aloof type but it turns out she's socially awkward and a little spoiled and also maybe afraid to really strike out on her own.
17. A piece of media you want to plagiarize. What system would you use for it
I dream of reskinning Inevitable by @soulmuppet with Trigun lore. Deeply satisfying to think about.
18. A great action scene you had in a game this year
I got to run a fun session of Wildsea where the players were fighting off a Stagger-Saint (big robot daddy longlegs) and one of them jumped right onto it and stabbed it in the "eye". It seemed like they might go down with the creature, but were able to be rescued by crewmates.
19. An emotionally intense scene you had in a game this year
We lost our magical girl friend at the end of Blades in the Dark in the multiverse game, and the next session was a really heavy moment as we all tried to figure out how our characters would cope with it (they aren't coping well).
20. A scene that made you laugh this year
It's Denise again. I love playing her bc apparently I am possessed by the spirit of a 60 year old diner waitress. But when a Delta Green agent was trying to explain that people going missing in national parks was nothing new, Denise said "Yes, agent, I listen to true crime podcasts too, now can we talk about what's really going on here" and we all just died laughing.
21. A scene that creeped you, but in a good way, this year
Encountered a float hermitage with nothing in it but a corpse and the fresco he'd been painstakingly working on in the strobing light as his home spun. Eerie and haunting. (This was in a playtest for new Wildsea stuff)
22. A game with 2 or more systems that work in great synergy
Are you tired of me talking about Voidheart Symphony yet? It uses the Resistance system in the Void and PbtA in the real world (iirc - might have that a little backwards). Probably not quite what this question meant, as it is LITERALLY two systems glued together, but I am so excited to run it.
23. A cool class/archetype/playbook ability you played this year
New wildsea mantis-people have a molt ability that lets you change the shape and function of your body and it is chef kiss!!!
24. A really short & sweet game
We are But Worms by Riverhouse Games
Look. I know you've seen this game. I know it's been memed to death. I know it's spurred tons of conversations about what a game is. I love it for all those reasons but I also legit love playing it. Sometimes you just gotta get the wiggles out, you know?
25. A rule/mechanic you bring to the table regardless of the game you're playing
So aside from safety tools (which I think everyone should be using), I consistently use a variant of the rumors phase from Good Society at the start of a game.
I have players submit 3 rumors about their character: at least one true, at least one false, third is their choice. I then distribute the rumors at random amongst the players.
I find that it's helpful in giving people a starting point and connections even if the game isn't necessarily the sort that would otherwise facilitate that.
A #SeptembeRPG prompt list from @eladhen on dice camp.

Did you know?
@robot-wars Not sure if you've already seen those, but read this post if you can find the time to. In the first five issues of Robot Wars Magazine from back in the day, there were two-part comics based on the fictional backstories of the House Robots. Issue 1 - The Origin of Dead Metal - Part 1 - Part 2 Issue 2 - The Origin of Matilda - Part 1 - Part 2 Issue 3 - The Origin of Sir Killalot - Part 1 - Part 2 Issue 4 - The Origin of Sgt. Bash - Part 1 - Part 2 Issue 5 - The Origin of Shunt - Part 1 - Part 2
I thought these comics were pretty cool, you know what I mean? Too bad we yanks never got them when Robot Wars was first being broadcast in the U.S. But, at least someone went to the effort of scanning them and putting them online for all to see!
And if you ask me, they should do a TV miniseries based on the House Robots' fictional backstories. Even if they have no intent of bringing back Sgt. Bash, Mr. Psycho, Growler, or Cassius Chrome, I think it would be cool to see.
DISCLAIMER: I take no credit for the creation of the comics that the above links go to, or for the scans that were made of them.
