Robot friendships might be my favourite thing in fiction ever. There's something so pure and special about robots who are friends.
Like hell yeah, we're programmed machines that were put into this world for only one specific reason, to serve humans, we're not supposed to form relationships of any kind, but you know what? You're my friend. I don't exactly understand what that term means, but I'm grateful you were built at the same time as me and we met, I hope your battery recharges fully and your parts continue to function smoothly without any issue.

So I was talking with a mentor of mine (both of us on the autism spectrum), and he introduced me to a ChatGPT use case that I hadn’t seen talked about on my side of the internet yet. Specifically, it’s usage as an accessibility tool and “personal aide.”
For example, handing my Robot Friend a list of bullet points and having them turn it into an email I can send to my boss explaining some of my communication deficits. Could I do that myself? Probs. But sometimes it takes SO MUCH BRAIN POWER to do that, and half the time I miss some of what I wanted to say. Same thing with writing letters to the Social Security Administration, emailing my Voc Rehab counselor, making a case for why I need a particular tool or class or whatever, writing ad copy for my online store, writing a heckin website bio, all sorts of nonsense. Yesterday, I spent some time working on a meal plan and telling it what I had in my pantry, what I didn’t like from its suggestions, and getting it to give me a list of groceries that I didn’t already have. It’s a little wonky, sure, but it’s usable.
I’m also curious, as a genealogist-in-training, about how it could be used as a research tool. I did see this post by @shortace and the comments by @fixyourwritinghabits that went over a use case where the historical research presented by ChatGPT was blatantly and verifiably wrong, so I know I’d have to make sure to regularly demand sources from it, or use one of the other chats that provides sources automatically, but I feel like there’s potential here, because I could theoretically feed all my current info to the Robot Friend so it could take more than just one string of info into consideration the way I have to do it with Google. Also, fewer Boolean commands to remember. Heck, I might even be able to get it to spit out a research log for me based on the questions I asked it.
I think I’m going to document different use cases as I go, to share what’s been useful and what hasn’t. I am always on the hunt for things that can executive function FOR me, so I want to share what I find.

character idea: girl mecha pilot who gets dysphoria from being human and spends as much time neural-linked into the mech as possible because that body feels more like her than the flesh does.
mechs are expensive so maybe the only way she can possibly get regular access to one is to put herself in debt to a mercenary corps, running disposable missions until she can pay her junk-tier mech off.
sleeping in her mech to spend as little time out of it until she starts dreaming of static. wearing long sleeves to try and stop herself from picking at the squishy human flesh on her arms. it doesnt work.
maybe neural-links are dangerous for the feedback they provide to the pilot, with few risking to install them. maybe they dont usually provide sensation, but she disables the safety measures because its the only way she can feel alive.

Robot characters who are given names like SL-308-62 but instead of their human friend going Well let's call you Sally for short, they instead ask the other if they Like their current name.
"Do you like your serial number?" they ask. "Yes, quite. It reminds me of who I am" the robot replies. "I have heard others like me go by different names after some time, and maybe one day I'll choose one for myself, too. But right now that is my full name, yes" they continue.
Because it's not your decision to make whether or not the robot will receive a new name. It should be theirs only. What's the difference? One is more complex and the other is simplified. They were both given by strangers instead of themselves.
"62 will do," they conclude. "It's my model number - there will be no other 62 after me."

Chris Sanders characters who were built to be mindless machines (of destruction, in Stitch's case), but grow a compassionate heart thanks to bonding and develop a strong link to ducklings and goslings, my beloved!
