rummage, v.

First attested in the 1540s as a nautical term with the meaning "to arrange cargo in a ship's hold", from the identical noun referring to "the act of arranging cargo in a ship's hold", which is first attested in the 1520s. The term is French in origin, from the noun arrumage, "arrangement of cargo", itself from the French verb arrumer, "to stow cargo in a ship's hold".

The French noun arrumage is comprised of three elements: a prefix (a-), a root (-rum-), and a suffix (-age). The prefix a- is French meaning "to", from Latin ad, "to or towards", from the Proto-Indo-European root *ad-, "to, near, or at". The root -rum- is probably Germanic in origin, likely from Proto-Germanic *ruman, "open space" (from which we get Modern English room), which is ultimately from PIE *reue-, "to open; space". The suffix -age is a nominalizer from the Late Latin suffix -aticum, which gave the root word it was tacked on to the sense of "belonging or related to [the root word]". That suffix is also a compound, from the first conjugation Latin past participle ending -atus (from PIE *-at-, which gives a continuous sense), and Latin -icus, an adjective-formation suffix giving the sense "in the manner of [the root word]", from PIE *-(i)ko, a suffix which indicates that the word it is attached to is an adjective.

The order of conglomeration is as follows: First, the root -rum- is prefixed with a- and made into the verb arrumer, which literally means "to [put something] into a space". Then the verb arrumer is suffixed with the nominalizer -age, resulting in arrumage, "the act of [putting something] into a space". That noun was then borrowed and Anglicized into the familiar Modern English form.

Use of this word to mean "to disarray in the act of searching" is from the 1590s, and to mean "to hunt or search closely (through stored goods)" from the 1610s.

and then things from a role reversal AU that isn't exactly a reversal but... it's got Rummage Protagonist, Evil Roz, and Morally Ambiguous Villain Assistant Vontra. Also a side of doomed Vontroz. None of the comics are like.. from the same moments, they're meant to be read separately but they are kind of in an order of events. All the comics are already past Rummage's whimsical story arc with nature, though.
