The east window of St Mary Magdalene parish church in Cumbria. The church is better known as the Augustinian Priory of Lanercost. It's ghostly remains of the eastern end, are visible in the gloom. Due to its precarious geographical position on the border between England and Scotland, the priory was exposed to Scottish raids. Edward I stayed here for six months in 1206/7, much to the chagrin of the canons. It was during this time that Edward ordered the hanging of Thomas de Bruce, brother of Robert de Bruce. Robert himself laid siege to the priory in 1311 and committed 'infinite evils'.
