Jean Balliol

Jean Balliol régna en tant que roi d'Écosse de 1292 à 1296. Il était soutenu par Édouard Ier d'Angleterre (r. de 1272 à 1307) dans la compétition qui visait à trouver un successeur à Alexandre III d'Écosse (r. de 1249 à 1286), un processus connu sous le nom de "Grande Cause". Le règne de Jean prit fin rapidement en 1296 lorsque Édouard Ier décida de conquérir l'Écosse. Le roi écossais fut publiquement dépouillé de son titre royal et de ses insignes, d'où son surnom de Toom Tabard ("Manteau vide"). Lorsque les Écossais se rebellèrent contre l'oppression anglaise, ils choisirent un nouveau roi, Robert le Bruce (r. de 1306 à 1329). Jean, quant à lui, fut enfermé dans la Tour de Londres, puis exilé en France où il mourut dans sa propriété familiale en Picardie en 1313 ou 1315.

The National Wallace Monument (generally known as the Wallace Monument) is a tower standing on the summit of Abbey Craig, a hilltop near Stirling in Scotland. It commemorates Sir William Wallace, a 13th-century Scottish hero.
