Leslie Coleman McCann (September 23, 1935 – December 29, 2023) was an American jazz pianist and vocalist.[1] He is known for his innovations in soul jazz and his 1969 recording of the protest song "Compared to What". His music has been widely sampled in hip hop.
Early life
Leslie Coleman McCann was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on September 23, 1935.[2] He grew up in a musical family with three sisters, most of whom sang in church choirs.[3][4] His father was a fan of jazz music and his mother was known to hum opera tunes around the house.[4]
As a youth, McCann played the tuba and drums and performed in his school's marching band.[3][4] As a pianist, he was largely self-taught.[5] He explained that he only received piano lessons for a few weeks as a six-year-old before his teacher died.[3]
McCann attended Los Angeles City College, which was highly influential to his musical career.[6] At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy in San Diego.[6]
Career
During his service in the Navy, McCann won a singing contest, which led to an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.[1] After leaving the Navy, McCann moved to California and played in his own trio.[5] He declined an offer to work in Cannonball Adderley's band so that he could dedicate himself to his own music.[5] The trio's first job was at the Purple Onion club in 1959 accompanying Gene McDaniels.[3]

The main part of McCann's career began in the early 1960s, when he recorded as a pianist with his trio for Pacific Jazz.[7] In 1969, Atlantic released Swiss Movement, an album recorded with saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Bailey earlier at that year's Montreux Jazz Festival.[8] The album contained the song "Compared to What"; both reached the Billboard pop charts. The song, which criticized the Vietnam War, was written by Eugene McDaniels years earlier and recorded and released as a ballad by McCann in 1966 on his album, Les McCann Plays the Hits. Roberta Flack's version appeared as the opening track on her debut album First Take (1969).[9][10]
After the success of Swiss Movement, McCann, primarily a piano player, emphasized his vocals. He became an innovator in soul jazz, merging jazz with funk, soul and world rhythms. His music was influential for its use of electric piano, clavinet and synthesizer.[11]
In 1971, McCann and Harris were part of a group of soul, R&B and rock performers–including Wilson Pickett, the Staple Singers, Santana and Ike & Tina Turner–who flew to Accra, Ghana, to perform a 14-hour concert for more than 100,000 Ghanaians. The March 6 concert was recorded for the documentary film Soul to Soul.[12] In 2004, the movie was released on DVD with an accompanying soundtrack album.[13]
McCann had a stroke in the mid-1990s,[7] but he returned to music in 2002, when Pump it Up was released, and continued to release music until 2018.[11] He also exhibited his work as a painter and photographer.[1]
Death
McCann died from pneumonia in a Los Angeles hospital on December 29, 2023, at the age of 88.[6]
Legacy
McCann's recordings have been widely sampled in hip hop music, mostly in the 1990s and 2000s, by nearly 300 acts.[11][14] These include A Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hill, De La Soul, the Notorious B.I.G., Sean Combs, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Mary J. Blige, the Pharcyde, Eric B. & Rakim, Mobb Deep, Gang Starr and Raekwon.[11][15]

“Malcolm and Me” by Robin Farmer is a novel about a 13-year-old young, gifted, and black Catholic girl named Roberta Forest. She attends a mostly white Catholic school. During a class discussion on Thomas Jefferson, Roberta doesn’t hesitate to call Jefferson out as a racist. And a hypocrite for enslaving people. The nun responds o her with a racist insult. This makes Roberta begin to question God and all the important people in her life. At this time she is also struggling with a difficult relationship with her family and now religion. The Autobiography of Malcolm X helps her to cope with the various difficulties she’s experiencing in life, including her parent’s troubled marriage. This novel is relevant because it shows how a young girl learns to speak the truth by overcoming odds in the face of opposition about one of America’s founding fathers. Even though some may think it was not necessarily the wisest thing to do.

CHORINHO DE BEBÊ TEXTO: ROBERTA CIRNE CONTATO PARA PALESTRAS: [email protected] Um conto de leitor, Antônio Jefferson repassado por seu filho... O Sr. Antônio, infelizmente faleceu ano passado.

Drury's aunt, Valerie Wilcox, told the The Buffalo News that she fondly recalled the day her sister legally adopted the "sweet, sweet girl" with a capacity for joy that could echo off the walls. On family vacations to Wildwood, New Jersey, Amanda remembers that her sister was the one pulling everyone else into the water.
"Jubilant" was the word her brother, Christopher Moyer, used to describe her. She was a fan of food and life and seemingly every song on the radio he didn't know, he said.
Drury's swings in energy could make it difficult to hold a job, Moyer said. But after he was diagnosed with leukemia, eventually requiring a bone marrow transplant, she rushed to Buffalo eight years ago to be by his side. She babysat his two small children, made grocery trips to help out, and accompanied him on wing runs for his restaurant, The Dalmatia Hotel.
“No matter what she went through. She was full of life," said her friend and neighbor in Buffalo, Krystle Pino, to radio station WGRZ. "Caring, happy, she cared about everyone,”
At the beginning of each day, Pino told the Syracuse Post-Standard, Drury liked to pop her head out the window to yell across the street.
“Good morning, Boo,” Drury would yell. “I love you!”
“I love you, too!” Pino responded in kind.
Drury lived just 10 minutes on foot from the Tops Friendly Markets location on Jefferson Avenue — and on Saturday afternoon, May 14, she walked down the street the same way she always did, Moyer said.
But this time, she didn’t return.
"I knew about the shooting immediately," Moyer said. "All my friends had called me saying, 'Oh my god, I can't believe what happened down the street.'"
Moyer knew a gunman was at their local supermarket. He knew multiple people had been shot. He refused to even imagine that his sister could be involved.
But she wasn't answering the phone. She wasn't at home. His sister's friends began to knock on his door, saying they were worried.
"Little by little," he said, "it began to seep in."
Even before the police called, he began preparing his family for the worst.
She had been among the first victims, they learned. She'd been shot down in the Tops parking lot by a man who’d scrawled a racial slur onto his rifle.
The alleged killer had driven more than 200 miles from his home to Buffalo’s historical Black Main Street. According to police, he left behind a white supremacist manifesto describing his plan to terrorize anyone who didn’t look like him.
By the time police allowed the gunman to lay down his rifle, 13 people had been shot. And 10 lay dead.
Among them was his sister, just 32 years old, who would never again be able to shout her love from her front window, or serenade her sister with Whitney Houston songs over the phone.
"It's hard to know what to say," said Moyer, who said his family is trying to keep it together. He spoke from the hospital, after suffering yet another health setback.
For sister Amanda, Roberta was the one who made sure family gatherings were all about spending boisterous quality time together. "Her vibrancy set a tone," she said.
Moyer’s restaurant, The Dalmatia Hotel, declared itself heartbroken in a Facebook message, calling her a “bright light in the world.”
“To learn that a member of our NorthStar family fell victim to an extremist act of hate, is unfathomable,” wrote Daniel Bowles, superintendent of the North Syracuse Central School District where Drury had attended high school.
As for Drury's neighbor, Pino, she was left to tell her young children that they would never again see their neighbor, she told the Post-Standard.
“I had to explain … she is with God now,” Pino said.

im not sure if she can be described as "historical figure", perhaps more like "historically known artist" but i love frida kahlo. rest in peace, queen
🌸 - describe your ideal date
ive always wanted to go on an aquarium date with someone. id get distracted looking at the fish, she (girlfriend? wife? woman im getting to know? idk) would snap me out of my distraction by holding my hand or resting her head on my shoulder hehe. and we would give names to the fish. probably human names that sound funny for a fish to have, like Roberta or Jefferson. when we were tired of walking, we would sit on a bench inside those tunnels where you can see fish and rays passing by, and would maybe share a shy kiss under a big manta ray

The best songs of the 1970s
“What started out as a joke has turned into a disaster!” - Stu Nahan, Rocky IV
So my employment has me in my car a lot, which means I’m listening to the radio a lot. If I’m not listening to a podcast or baseball game through my phone I also have SiriusXM, which of course has a plethora of musical options. I gravitate to the 70s and 80s channels because, well, of course I do.
Something else about me you may or may not know is that I love ranking things. I have a Note on my phone I’m regularly accessing that is nothing but different types of rankings.
Thus, you can imagine my excitement when the 70s on 7 station announced a listener-voted Top 700 Songs of the 70s countdown over Labor Day weekend. It was a fun listen. They went through it twice over the four day weekend, and I was laboring much so I heard much.
It prompted me to think: What are my top seventy songs of the 70s? Surely I wasn’t going to come up with a top 700. After all, some in that list were real stinkers. But seventy? No problem. And indeed, it wasn’t hard to come up with that many songs. The hard part was narrowing it down. And once I did, there were still so many songs on my list I had enough for more lists, so I expanded it to 140, then 210, and... well...
I’m about to give you the authoritative list of the 350 best songs of the 1970s. I originally put out a Top 70 list on Facebook a few weeks ago. Much that of that list remains the same, with a few changes. But now there is much more. I’ve divided these into five “volumes” of seventy songs. They are my picks, but I welcome your feedback, because what’s a good set of rankings without debate and discussion.
