'Fleabag‘s Hot Priest, the Irish actor wowed everyone with his one-man production of Hamlet. Well, almost everyone.

The Irish actor has big-screen, stage and TV successes to his name, but the pinnacle of his thespian career possibly came when he appeared in Robert Icke’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet at the Almeida Theatre in 2017.

The powerhouse performance secured Scott an Olivier Award nomination, critical praise and audience adoration. But, it wasn’t all smooth sailing, as he recalled during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused film podcast with Josh Horowitz.

After the host asked whether he had ever been thrown by someone in the audience, the BAFTA-winning actor laughingly recalled one memorable performance where a man pulled out a laptop during the play.

“I was in the middle of ‘To be or f**king not to be’,” Scott said. “I was pausing and [the stage team] were like ‘get on with it’ and I was like ‘there’s no way’ and he [the audience member] didn’t realise.”

Scott re-enacted the threatening glare he shot at the unsuspecting theatre-goer. Eventually, after lots of nudging from the woman beside him, the laptop owner snapped the lid shut...'

Favorite films discovered in 2024

This year, I focused more on rewatching films I hadn't seen in a long time rather than racking up new titles. However, I still encountered plenty of new faves, many of them movies that have been on my watchlist for years. Here are the top twenty.

But first, some interesting patterns in this year's list...

The Window (dir. Ted Tetzlaff, 1949)

A young boy (Bobby Driscoll) living in a squalid NYC apartment building witnesses his neighbors (Paul Stewart and Ruth Roman) committing a murder. Unfortunately, the kid's penchant for tall tales prevent anyone from believing him-- except for the killers, eager to alleviate themselves of an inconvenient witness.

Precious few thrillers earn the moniker “Hitchcockian” as well as this intense little gem from RKO. The Hitchcock vibes make sense when you consider Hitchcock’s cinematographer from Notorious was in the director’s chair and the source material was written by Cornell Woolrich, also responsible for the short story behind Rear Window. Augmented by on-location photography of New York City and a grimy, desolate sense of urban decay, The Window is both a great suspense yarn and classic film noir. Despite having a kid for a lead character, the film pulls no punches: both its small-time crook villains and the city setting feel palpably dangerous.

My Neighbors the Yamadas (dir. Isao Takahata, 1999)

The Yamadas, an average middle-class Japanese family, navigate the perils of sharing a television set, a kid going missing during a shopping trip, awkward wedding speeches, and other misadventures.

Between the original Studio Ghibli directorial duo of Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, Miyazaki will always be the more popular filmmaker, but I think Takahata’s films are more intellectually and emotionally rewarding. This is not meant as a hit on Miyazaki’s undeniable greatness, but Takahata’s movies are far more challenging. That being said, My Neighbors the Yamadas is a lighter entry in his filmography, a slice of life comedy about the eponymous family and their shenanigans in modern Japan. However, beneath the whimsical humor runs an undercurrent of melancholy, an awareness of the transience of life in both its lovely and absurd moments. To date, it gets my vote for the most underrated Ghibli film.

A New Leaf (dir. Elaine May, 1971)

After squandering his ample inheritance, a middle-aged New York layabout (Walter Matthau) decides to marry an eccentric botanist (Elaine May) for her money then murder her ASAP.

Elaine May only directed a few films, but the two I’ve seen—this and the long-maligned Ishtar—were a lot of fun. A New Leaf is the better film though, far more focused and consistently funny. I don't usually belly laugh when watching a movie at home alone, but I did several times here. Even just thinking about some of the things that happen in this film can make me start laughing again. I understand the existing version was not May’s preferred cut and she felt it was butchered by the studio. Even so, this is a great movie regardless of that and one I really want to rewatch soon.

Cash on Demand (dir. Quentin Lawrence, 1961)

Uptight, unpleasant bank manager Harry Fordyce (Peter Cushing) is the boss from hell to his employees, but to criminal extraordinaire Gore Hepburn (Andre Morrel), he's the key to a successful heist. Posing as an insurance representative to get access to Fordyce's office, Hepburn tells the manager he's holding his wife and child, whose lives will be forfeit if he doesn't help him relieve the bank of ninety thousand pounds.

Ho, ho, ho, guess who's got a new Christmas classic to enjoy every year? Cash on Demand is not only a strangely enervating riff on A Christmas Carol's basic set-up (a miserable man is spiritually redeemed through an encounter with ghosts-- or in this case, bank robbers), but it's one of the best, tightest one-location thrillers I have ever seen. I genuinely had no idea where the story was going and found myself in absolute agony as the noose grew tighter around our protagonist's neck. It's a testament to both the writing and Peter Cushing's detailed, very human performance that this film is the emotionally powerful piece of work that it is, and not just a fun, clockwork heist yarn.

Letter from an Unknown Woman (dir. Max Ophuls, 1948)

While trying to evade a duel, an aging playboy (Louis Jordan) receives a letter from a dying woman (Joan Fontaine) who claims he was the love of her life. The letter recounts the details of their love affair, which was the centerpiece of this woman's life and only a mere erotic interlude in his.

The best way to describe this movie is lush romantic melodrama married to a bitter, emotionally brutal tale of a life wasted. The movie is heartbreaking but beautifully shot and performed. I’m not always the biggest fan of Fontaine, but she is fantastic here. Also, I need to watch more Max Ophuls.

Sudden Fear (dir. David Miller, 1952)

A middle-aged playwright (Joan Crawford) thinks she’s found love with a would-be matinee idol (Jack Palance)—instead she realizes she’s being targeted by her new hubby, who only wants her wealth. But he mistakes her emotional vulnerability for a lack of discernment—and a lack of desire to get even.

I like my women-in-peril thrillers when they feature clever heroines driven to survive whatever nightmare their antagonists throw at them and Sudden Fear is amazing in this regard. I know everyone loves Joan Crawford best in Mildred Pierce, but I was floored by her performance here, especially in the dialogue-free scenes. There are campy moments (which I adore), but the story is emotionally compelling and I not only wanted Joan's character to survive, but to thrive post-shitty marriage.

Thieves Like Us (dir. Robert Altman, 1974)

Young lovers Bowie (Keith Carradine) and Keechie (Shelley Duvall) yearn for a white picket fence, a quiet porch, and a case of Cokes (probably because that's all they drink in this film). Too bad Bowie is an escaped convict tied up with bank robbers. Too bad it's the Great Depression. At least there's plenty Coke. Want a Coke?

Most films set in the past do not as painstakingly recreate bygone worlds as strongly as Thieves Like Us. Set in Depression era Mississippi, this film captures the harsh, bleak reality and romantic, consumerist fantasies of its star-cross’d leads, played with sensuous naivete by Keith Carradine and the late, great Shelley Duvall. This is more than just yet another Bonnie and Clyde riff—it’s a tragedy about the elusive American Dream, with snippets of radio music, programs, and ads acting as a Greek chorus in a truly inspired touch. Robert Altman can be an acquired taste, but this is easily my favorite of his films to date.

Targets (dir. Peter Bogdanovich, 1968)

The paths of an aging horror star (Boris Karloff) and a psychotic mass shooter (Tim O'Kelly) cross at a drive-in theater.

Targets was not what I expected: it's a threeway character study between the disheartened horror star, the psychotic shooter, and 1960s America itself. To be honest, you could remake this movie now with a former ‘80s slasher star making the same musings and it would still seem credible—but then of course, you wouldn’t have Karloff in one of the best performances of his career. Targets is rendered even more chilling by its docudrama style. The violence shown isn’t sensationalistic, but presented in clinical detail, making it feel more authentic. Gorier films haven’t frightened me as much as this slow-burn character study.

Losing Ground (dir. Kathleen Collins, 1982)

Despite finding pleasure in research and theory, philosophy professor Sara Rogers (Seret Scott) envies the escatic nature of her painter husband, Victor (Bill Gunn). Their difference in temperaments and Victor's adulterous straying also strain the marriage. However, once Sara takes a job performing a sensuous, emotional role in a student film to get in touch with her own artistic side, Victor grows suspicious and jealous in turn.

Losing Ground was sold to me as a film about a crumbling marriage, but it's more than that. It might be more accurate to call it a portrait of self-discovery, a woman extending beyond her comfort zone to live more fully. I found myself strongly relating to Sara-- like her, I have a creative side I've often been timid to share, being more comfortable with the mind than the body. Being an independent film, it eschews the Hollywood histrionics and melodrama that would normally accompany this subject matter and it's paced perfectly at 90 minutes. Though filmed in the early '80s, the film only played the film festival circuit and never enjoyed a proper theatrical release. Only in 2015 was it rediscovered and then released on home video. The director Kathleen Collins died young, but this film stands a testament to her passion and talent.

Cactus Flower (dir. Gene Saks, 1969)

A middle-aged dentist (Walter Matthau) who poses as a married man to fend off romantic commitment decides to buckle down and wed his much younger girlfriend (Goldie Hawn, looking like a mod Tinker Bell). However, when she insists on speaking with his made-up wife, he recruits his no-nonsense nurse (Ingrid Bergman) into the charade.

Cactus Flower is what I often call a transitional film: released in the late ‘60s, it has one foot in the classical style of Old Hollywood and another in the more liberated counterculture that was shooting out hits like Easy Rider and The Graduate. Directed with unexciting competence by Gene Saks, Cactus Flower’s success largely comes from Ingrid Bergman, Goldie Hawn, and Jack Weston. Bergman I could watch in anything, so I’m biased perhaps, but she walks the fine line between funny and touching as the lonely woman who finds emotional liberation through her roleplaying. The scene where she gets groovy on the dance floor is a highlight of her entire screen career and no, I AM NOT KIDDING.

The Black Room (dir. Roy William Neill, 1935)

Two aristocratic brothers (both Boris Karloff) are at odds over the love of a young woman (Marian Marsh) and an ancient prophecy forecasting the end of their bloodline.

Boris Karloff dives into a double role in this deliciously gothic melodrama. Columbia pulled out all the stops for this one: it drips with sumptuous set design and expressionistic lighting. I was particularly taken by this film’s slightly tongue-in-cheek approach to a more 18th century mode of gothic terror. It goes for full-blooded melodrama with its innocent maidens, secret dungeons, lecherous villain, and ancient curses. It’s as close to a 1930s Castle of Otranto adaptation as we’ve got and by God, I'm grateful for its existence.

Freud: The Secret Passion (dir. John Huston, 1962)

In the late 1880s, young psychiatrist Sigmund Freud (Montgomery Clift) probes into the inner lives of his "hysterical" patients to discover the roots of their mental illnesses. However, these journeys into the subconscious worlds of others bring him into uncomfortable contact with his own demons.

Listening to a podcast episode on John Houston’s Key Largo led me to works of his I hadn’t heard of, such as Freud. I was initially skeptical it could be good. Biopics are my least favorite genre, but this film isn’t so much a biopic as a psychological drama in which Freud is the protagonist and some of his ideas are illustrated through his interactions with the other characters. Instead of wasting time being some melodrama ABOUT Freud the man (the route most biopics go regarding their subjects), it’s about his theories and philosophy, which is a far more interesting approach. The result is a probing, intellectual work. I’m not sure how close Montgomery Clift’s characterization is to the real Freud, but the real star of the show is Houston’s direction, a resurrection of German expressionist aesthetics blended with stark realism.

Paris is Burning (dir. Jennie Livingston, 1990)

This documentary covers 1980s NYC ball culture, where Black and Latino members of the LGBT+ community vogue and perform.

Documentaries are not usually my thing, but Paris is Burning was a longtime resident of my watchlist and I am glad I finally got around to seeing it. It has a time capsule quality, capturing a long-vanished 1980s New York City and the LGBT+ community living there at the time. Obviously, there is a lot of meditation on gender identity, sexuality, and the importance of community in a world hostile to your very existence, but I was also interested by the film's presentation of the materialism and consumption of the Reagan era.

Candyman (dir. Bernard Rose, 1992)

A graduate student (Virginia Madsen) studying urban myths unwittingly summons the Candyman (Tony Todd), the hook-handed ghost of a Black painter who was lynched decades ago.

I expected fun slasher nonsense and instead got a gorgeous, unsettling, modern gothic masterpiece that only occasionally dips its toes into schlock. Candyman is ethereal in all the right ways despite being suffused with despairing urban gloom. I was not surprised to find the script was adapted from a Clive Barker story—like Barker’s The Hellbound Heart (adapted into the Hellraiser films), Candyman is chilling yet eerily beautiful. The moment I finished watching it, I knew this was one I would be itching to revisit. There’s just so much going on regarding race, class, and memory in America. Also, Tony Todd’s voice is a damn treasure.

Merrily We Go to Hell (dir. Dorothy Arzner, 1932)

An alcoholic playwright (Frederic March) and his long-suffering wife (Sylvia Sidney) decide to have an open marriage. It doesn't work out well for either of them.

Merrily We Go to Hell is a sneaky piece of work. Reading the synopsis, one expects the usual salacious pre-code melodrama. The first scenes even resemble your usual romantic comedy, with our central couple having a meet-cute. The actual movie is much more complicated. It's about a married couple thinking love is enough to make their union work despite the husband's alcoholism. However, this idea proves erroneous and attempts to numb the pain through hedonism and extramarital vengeance just pour gasoline on the fire. The emotional honesty here is astonishing and even the "happy ending" isn't so uncomplicated when you think about it. So far, this is my favorite film of director Dorothy Arzner.

Up the Down Staircase (dir. Robert Mulligan, 1967)

An idealistic young teacher (Sandy Dennis) gets her first position at an inner-city high school. However, she finds her enthusiasm worn down by the school system's bureaucracy and the many psychological troubles of her students and fellow faculty.

Ever since I watched Four Seasons a few years ago, I’ve been intrigued by Sandy Dennis. No matter the role, I find her eccentric yet vulnerable screen presence compelling. Up the Down Staircase was Dennis’ first starring vehicle and an unsentimental look at the teaching profession. Having worked as a teacher and in similar jobs in the past, I related strongly to the main character’s compassion fatigue and her frustrated desire to help make her community a better place. While not a cheery film, it is ultimately an optimistic one, even if that optimism is cautious. And of course, Dennis is damn great as always, whetting my appetite for more of her work.

They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (dir. Sydney Pollack, 1969)

In the thick of the Great Depression, a group of desperate contestants sign up for a grueling dance marathon with a hefty cash prize. Greed, sexual exploitation, health problems, and crushing despair eventually complicate the exhibition.

This movie is so bleak you’ll be just as exhausted as the characters by the tragic finish. I know that doesn’t sound like much of a recommendation, but this is powerful stuff. It does what a great tragedy should do: make you emphasize with the characters and go out into the world more empathetic toward the people around you and more critical of a society in which such awful conditions could be permitted. And like Targets, it’s depressing that this movie’s themes remain relevant to American culture.

Flash Gordon (dir. Frederick Stephani and Ray Taylor, 1936)

A himbo polo player (Buster Crabbe), a middle-aged scientist in hot pants (Frank Shannon), and an ingenue in a blonde wig (Jean Rogers) must save the Earth from a galactic emperor.

Yes, I’m counting a film serial as a single unit on this list. In this corny, breathless saga can be found the seeds of so many modern blockbuster spectacles. The old school space opera aesthetic is always a joy and I love seeing what George Lucas borrowed from the comic book plot and fantastic images for his Star Wars films. Also, the serial is surprisingly horny for a product released after the death knell of the pre-code era, so that’s fascinating too. I watched the episodes, one a night, usually before a feature film, to recreate at least in part the conditions in which old serials were viewed. I highly recommend that approach if you're interested in watching these kind of films-- NEVER binge them.

Silkwood (dir. Mike Nichols, 1983)

Karen Silkwood (Meryl Streep), a union activist and metallurgy worker at a plutonium processing plant, discovers both she and many of her co-workers have been contaminated with high levels of radiation due to blatant safety violations. Rather than remedy the problem, her employers are determined to keep her quiet, but Karen refuses to back down.

Meryl Streep's performance in Silkwood finally showed me what all the hype around her is about. What an astonishing, natural performance-- I forgot I was watching an actor every moment. As for the overall film, it's one of the stronger docudramas out there (as this film was based on a true story). It isn't just a preachy message piece and it allows Silkwood to be both a heroic figure and a flesh and blood human being with flaws like anyone. The domestic drama involving her lover (Kurt Russell) and lesbian roommate (Cher, who also gives an incredible performance) is almost as compelling as the main story. Though released in the early '80s, it feels like a late manifestation of the paranoia thriller genre of the decade before.

Love with the Proper Stranger (dir. Robert Mulligan, 1963)

When a one-night stand with a jazz musician (Steve McQueen) leaves her pregnant and at risk of upsetting her very Catholic family, an innocent sales clerk (Natalie Wood) tracks down her lover and demands he help her get an abortion.

Love with the Proper Stranger is such a unique piece of work that I can forgive the elements that dissatisfy me (like the ending). Wood and McQueen's romance starts out acidic and slowly becomes tender over the course of their bizarre misadventure, and the film itself shifts through several moods. Sometimes it feels like an urban drama, other times a romantic comedy. But it somehow holds together, perhaps because of the chemistry between the lead actors.

If there's something worse than a hairy eyeball , is a entire class giving you that type of glare or giggling shamelessly in your presence

You were so shocked that you couldn't even move or plead for some mercy over you , just stay there and look at him like a deer in lights

It was almost like your staring and silence was way worse than any insult that Vance has received , are you challenging him ? Are you waiting for him to throw a punch or an insult at you ? Why are you looking at him like that with those eyes ?

Then with a stuttered voice , you tried to say that you were sorry and that you were pushed against the machine by other people that no longer are on the mall in the best way you could mixing your language with english words

With a irritated sigh , he let go of your arm , but not before saying :

" You own me , remember that dip shit "

You went out of the mall almost running away , kinda relieved it didn't end in something worse

Then the next day , your first day in school , you found yourself in the same room as him , again , and the cherry of the cake , you were gonna be his desk mate

You avoided the slightest eye contact or accident that could happen so you didn't made him mad again , he was a short fuse even with the teachers that pissed him off

The mathematics exam day came and you were about to finish the whole thing in the first 10 minutes ( good thing that the mathematics are almost the same around the world ) , but in the corner of your eye you saw a puzzled Vance trying to figure out the content inside of that paper

And yeah ... He was an asshole , and you didn't need to risk your grades for him , but you owned him , right ?

When the teacher turned around , you touched his arm and silently pushed a little bit your exam to his side . He was confused at first , but the same eyes that stared at him in terror at the Grab n Go before , were telling him now to take the opportunity

Smirking , he noted your answers with the smart of a student that has cheated multiple times before , and then pretended to be frustrated by the exam a few minutes more for " extra credibility "

The very next day , when you both received A+ in your exams , he looked at your direction with hesitation

" Thanks for the A I guess , but why you did it ? "

You wrote in your notebook with his pen that was near by and showed it to him

" I owned you :) "

Since then , you started learning to throw hands with him and Vance to insult in your language , that was if he wasn't playing his adored Jungle Queen Pin Ball Machine with you by his side

Let's just say that your nickname changed to " the new in town kid " to " Vance's protected one" real quick

BRUCE YAMADA

He was the one assigned to guide you through school and he was excited to do so , he tried his best to make you feel at home because even if he's a very popular boy , he still understands the struggles of changing schools and being a foreigner

So he invited you to sit on his table , be on his team on P.E classes ( where your teacher jokingly told Bruce to watch out for the competition , although he understood this as a " This kid can be better than you " because of your body than " you have watch out for any other trying to steal them from you " way ) , go to his games , community reunions , etc

You liked his social and outgoing nature and appreciated his invitations and including in his group of friends , but you felt like a fish out of the water , you couldn't talk that much and you only listened and responded one or two questions that they had about you

Not only that , you felt like his friends weren't that fond of you , almost like they only tolerate you because of Bruce

Your theory was confirmed when Bruce invited you to a party and in the moment you were alone , they started to ask you passive aggressive questions like , " You also came here for easy jobs ?" " Your parents are immigrants too or one of them married an American to get free pass ?" " In your country people are quiet like you ?" " If you are able to understand us , then why you can't talk to us too , huh ?" " Do you talk at all or what ?"

Uncomfortable with their tone you tried to leave and tell Bruce however you could that you wanted to leave , but they didn't let you , and started to push you around in a circle while laughing that you couldn't tell them anything back while insulting you with all the names they had for your people

It wasn't until Bruce asked what's going on and put an arm around you in a comfort and assertive way that they stopped , Bruce told them that it wasn't cool to make someone feel that way for where they come from or their personalities , but they started to clap back racist insults and mute shaming you and you couldn't handle it anymore

He tried to find you inside and outside of the party , but you were already gone .

The next week on the hallway he grabbed your wrist gently asking you to go somewhere private , that it wasn't anything funny , just to talk about what happened that night on a empty art classroom that nobody uses

" Hey I'm really , really , sorry for what happened that night , I didn't know they were going to do that or say those things , I wouldn't let you alone or go to the party in the first place if I did . I just wanted to let you know that I don't share at all their opinions about you , nobody chooses where they come from or learns to speak a entire language in one day , if they can't understand that , then it's better for them to mind their business "

You nodded , but you were just not going to sit near him or his friends anymore , he seemed sincere on his apology , but a voice in the back of your mind was telling you to keep your distance , because maybe , just maybe , it was his idea all along

On the old local gym where the entrance money is cheaper than the modern one in town that everyone goes , you were exercising on your own trying to clear your mind and letting the stress in your body

Until you hear a familiar voice from behind you

" Hey , mind if take those dumbbells ?"

Is he following you ? You only nodded and continue to work out

" Hey , uh , do have a minute to talk ? Or well , listen ?"

You frowned but listened anyways

" I know that things have been awkward lately but... It's ok for you if we hang out somewhere else ? Just the two of us , no one else "

You thought about it for a second.... But damn if he wasn't cute and made you fell for his charm every single time

Bruce with time got closer and more comfortable to be open with you and vice versa , he recommended you an English tutor to help you speed up your pronunciation , started to invite you and only you to his house , plan " dates that weren't dates " until the rumours of you two going around became true

What can he say ? Athletic , smart , attractive and non judging , he felt free to be himself with you , and that , is something that the girls that were crazy over him could never do

That's why they and his old friends give you the hairy eyeball , but you couldn't care less about it

ROBIN ARELLANO

Robin was minding his business while looking inside his locker for that stupid mathematics book , but he noticed that the next locker on his right wasn't the same big dude with sweat smell anymore , but you , a new pretty face that seemed to like being in shape

Contrary of what students think , he's an awkward boy maybe that's why he gets along with Finney so well , and yes he had some street and fighting knowledge , but he wasn't a Casanova at all

So lost in his thoughts about what he could possibly do or say to look cool and start a chit chat with you , that he didn't notice that you were already gone

Carajo , you really don't like being late to class , huh ?

He damned himself for being too slow and headed to Mr Johnson's class

But , but , but , his locker " neighbor" was already inside , sitting right in front of his seat . Mr Johnson , being the energetic and hurried man that he is didn't waste no time in telling Robin to sit down to start the explanation

He didn't care to listen before , it was useless on his opinion because either way he wouldn't understand a thing , but since his grades are being under the line of average he needed to pay attention , but with you " blocking " the view , it was more difficult if only you weren't so cute to look on

Explanation over , class assignment was on , and you were the first one to finish it , and for everyone's surprise , Mr Johnson didn't find any mistake , so you were free until everyone finished their ones

But there's something that Robin noticed , and it's that you never speak in class or with anyone at all , maybe you're shy ? Perhaps mute ?

Well , he needed to find out . He touched your shoulder and tried to ask you how did you resolved everything in no time , you were hesitating in talking , so he thought that you being a shy was a thing , but then you started to slowly try to put English words together in a sentence , and then he understood everything

You are not only new in school , but also a foreigner . He then sighed and , without realizing , smiling at you while saying :

" Hey it's cool , chill , no need to try if you don't want to . You understand me , right ?"

You nodded and smiled shyly

" Ok , how about I speak , and you answer with yes or no until you learn a little bit to talk English , sounds good ? "

You nodded once again , and turned back with your cheeks burning from the blush . He's not that much of a talker , but he more than anyone knows how hard it is to go to school and not having English as your first language that's why he fails with fast talker teachers so why not befriend you and letting you know that he has your back ?

He skipped P.E before your arrive , but now , he's showing the hell off , every chance that he gets to prove how strong he is will be taken

He needs to climb a rope faster than any other kid in P.E ? Right on jumping to action . Need help with a heavy book or backpack ? Does the teacher want strong boys to move chairs and tables ? He's the first one to offer help

It's already obvious , or at least for the majority , that you being one of Robin's best friend crush makes you , even without you noticing it , untouchable , and whoever dares to touch you , would be in less than a week with a serious injury on their faces for testing your kindness and Robin's patience . Trust me , he will make sure they will stay visible for a long time for others that had the same thought back off

Finney catched the attentive attitude of his friend and started to help you learn English or other subjects that you both are having difficulties ( He has a love - hate type of relationship with being the third wheel , but he knows Robin would do the same for him , so he accepts it )

You shared your exercise routine and he loved it , well , he loved everything about you , the food you make , the music of your origin country , your language slangs , everything

Be patient , one day he'll loose the fear of ruining the friendship between you two and you'll be going around like lovers do

BILLY SHOWALTER

Thanks to his job he knows almost everyone in the neighborhood or at least recognizes their faces ( this last thing is the most common one )

Coming back home after finishing his route he saw you carrying a bag of groceries , he didn't recognize you , but didn't give it that much of attention until you fell down to the ground for tripping over a tiny little rock

He stopped his bike and ran in your direction to help , he tried to put back all the groceries but Harper started to lick them off while barking when she got scolded for it

He grabbed your arms and helped you to get up , unintentionally feeling your biceps and getting a little flustered but didn't showed it ( damn you must strong if you had those in your arms he thought )

Just a little clumsy , but he can't speak that much either , counting how many times he fell down his bike for one sec distractions

You put back what was left of groceries and thanked him in your language , he was surprised , he never heard anyone speak another language before outside English except on the TV , so he asked you to repeat yourself , not in a threatening way , he just wanted to hear again the words that you spoke

You repeated yourself , and he laughed in surprise , its so cool !

Even if you did what he asked you to , he didn't know that if you understood English completely

" Wait , you understand English , right ? like , everything in English ? Did you already tried one of our best America's stuff ? Do you listen american or british singers or ..? "

He never speaks that much , he's somehow someone reserved with his words but this time he was too excited to hold back , although he came back to himself when he realized he was being a little too much

He walked you home asking a you a lot of questions that you only answered shaking or nodding your head , giving advices that he thought would be useful to you , telling how nice the the neighborhood is , America's best traditions , food that you needed to try , movies , in general being excited to show off his love for the United States

Once you got inside waving your hand , he couldn't help to hop on his bike again and ride as fast as he could to his home and tell his family about you , he met a strong and cute foreigner for the first time today !

The times that he encounter you , now in a much calmer way , he would try to get to know you and your culture , so slowly you two got a cultural exchange , he inviting to his house and 4th of July festivals , carnavals , thanksgiving , you get it

And since he was nice to you and didn't mind you or your inability to speak English , with time he started to go to your house as well , your family jokingly making you embarrassed by saying you didn't waste time on finding a boyfriend

So in general , don't be afraid to be yourself around him , he would love to show you how great America is , and it's ok if you don't want to try everything that he says , as long as you still being friends with him , he's satisfied

Who knows , maybe one day you both could live the American Dream together

A lot of these choices are gut feelings but I really do think this is the kind of romance movie she would enjoy heavily (Momo is definitely a sucker for the rich s/o who falls for someone lower-middle class)

What can I say, this man doesn't go for cheap, young-love flings in movies. He will, however, go into a deep-dive about the most serious, drama-driven plotlines about two adults finding each other and ramble about the rivoting beauty of it (he and Momo are both dedicated Julia Roberts fans).

This man's guilty pleasures are medieval fairytales and love stories (Shakespeare, Tolkien, and other classic works of literature? he's on that shit). He especially loves knight-princess love stories but he'll never admit it.

Shinsou doesn't really watch much romance movies unless Hizashi forces them into watching one of his choices during family movie night (because let's face it the adopted Shinsou into the Aizawa-Yamada family is a universal fanon necessity). Uraraka loves loves LOOOOOOVES romances of every sort! Movies, books, real-life cases, you name it :) I headcanon that when she was a little girl this was a movie both her parents loved and maybe even watched together on a first date so it just became a core memory for Uraraka and she just adores how romantic even just the aesthetic of this film is.

(I feel like Iida would really like this movie too, so Uraraka would probably have Iida and maybe even Deku too rewatch this film with her at some point <3)

13. My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999)

Normally the slice-of-life comedy appeals to me but this time it was a "meh". It's not bad but I wouldn't recommend it unless ur doing a study on japanese gag manga art style in motion.

14. Spirited Away (2001)

10/10

It's hard to top Princess Mononoke and it's probably due to nostalgia is why I ranked this .5 higher than that but this is still is one of the top tier Ghibli movies ever made. I really wish I could eat the food from this movie, it looks so good.

15. The Cat Returns (2002)

9/10

A very cute movie about a kind, aimless girl who saves a cat and ends up kidnapped (or cat-napped if u will) to the Cat Kingdom where she's being forced to marry the Cat King's son but The Baron (from Whispers of the Heart, played by the Dread Pirate Roberts) help rescue her. It's not a grand adventure or as beautiful as Spirited Away/Mononoke but it's still a fun adventure that I highly recommend. Just don't look for any connections to Whispers of the Heart.

The Black Phone by Joe Hill

The Black Phone by Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill

So I bet most of us know that The Black Phone is based on a short story by Joe Hill, but I’ve never seen anyone go over the differences between the two.

So, here we go:

The Grabber in the short story is canonically named ‘Albert’ and referred to as such throughout the story. However he is not called Albert Shaw. From what I can tell ‘Shaw’ was Finney’s last name in early promotion for the film.

Albert is a part time clown, not a part time magician. He was made a clown as a direct reference to John Wayne Gacey. However, Derrickson and Cargill changed him to a magician in order to avoid comparisons between The Grabber and Pennywise.

Albert is described as being ugly, fat and unfit. Hill has a habit of using fatphobic tropes to describe his villains and boy do I hate that. Albert is far weaker than his movie counterpart, he actually falls over when he kills Max because the axe was too heavy for him. Vance Hopper could kill book!Albert by sneezing on him too hard.

But how did he managed to become a serial killer then? Well, with the exemption of Finney, all of The Grabber’s victims in the book are under the age of 13.

The Grabber does not kidnap Finney by offering to show him a magic trick, but by offering to show him something ‘funny’. That’s more sinister in my opinion.

Finney doesn’t have his penlight. He injured Al’s arm by biting him.

Finney’s name isn’t Finney Blake, it’s John Finney. This means that the line where Al calls him ‘Johnny’ makes more sense and is scarier since The Grabber knew Finney’s name. From this point on I will be referring to ‘book!Finney’ as ‘John’

Griffin, Billy, Vance and Robin are all film originals. The only named victims in the book are a nine year old named Loren and Bruce Yamada.

Bruce is a pitcher, not a batter and didn’t say John’s arm was ‘mint’. Instead, he said John ‘played dirty’ which is 70s speak for ‘played well’.

Bruce plays for The Cardinals.

Bruce is the only ghost John talks to. While the narration refers to him as ‘Finney’, Bruce exclusively calls him ‘John’.

This is not a difference, but I ship John and Bruce.

Gwen also doesn’t exist. John has a older sister named Susannah. The two are psychically linked because they were born years apart, but on the same day. They can sent each other psychic visions.

John cannot hear the phone because he is psychic. Anyone can hear the phone so long as they’ve been in the basement for long enough. John is the first one of The Grabber’s victims to live that long.

While we don’t know how long John was in the basement for, I’m pretty sure Albert never fed or gave him water.

John and Susannah’s mother is alive and not psychic.

The short story doesn’t end with the grabber dying or with John escaping the basement. It ends extremely suddenly with the ‘it’s for you’ line.

Yep. This is a universe where Tadashi Yamada lived along with Robert Gallahan due to her saving the both of them during the fire. This meant that Hiro and his friends didn’t need to become a hero and Abigail Gallahan remains in a coma-like sleep. Ofc until she saves her but that’s another story for another day 👀

Fun fact: She’s currently being hunted down by someone in Miguel’s team due to her preventing the big hero 6 from happening.

I had a dumb idea to run a poll about which Wildbow character would make the "best" star for a Bachelor/ette-style reality show. But given how I am nowhere near the demographic for that kind of show, I figured I should ask for suggestions first. And that is what I am doing now: Asking for suggestions.

Some picks that seem amusing to me:

Laird Behaim: Manipulative, cruel, and power-hungry. In other words, a normal cop. But he also knows magic.

Robert "Beast of Burden" Burton: He's a bit-part character notable for being a brutish Brute and for getting murdered.

Amelia Dallon: She was so fucked-up over her first crush turning her down that she went to jail for it, and then she got worse.

Duncan Foster: Pre-character-development, he's uncharismatic, bland, and a bit oblivious...kind of like a harem anime protagonist, except without luck that keeps putting him in ecchi situations and then clobbered. And he's less oblivious than they are.

Bianca, aka Goddess: She's a ridiculously powerful parahuman who appointed herself god-queen of an entire planet; she surely has nothing better to do than star in a reality TV show. Also, she has a brainwashing power that works through video.

Professor Ibbot: He built a tween-girl-shaped cephalopod assassin in part to be a living sex toy. Worse, everyone knew that was part of why he designed Project Galatea the way he did. He's more fucked-up than Amy, and barely better at hiding it.

Maggie Holt: I will not clarify whether I'm talking about Mags or the other one, that's part of the absurdist appeal. (Remember that reality show about a guy who the producers pretended was Prince Harry?)

Lord Infante: Self-explanatory, I feel.

Natalie Matteson: The only normal person on this list. One of the few normal people associated with parahumanity.

Reverend Mauer: Reasonably handsome, aside from the mushroom arm. Active political agitator against the Crown. Probably took a vow of celibacy.

Khan "Conquest" Quest: Just for the jokes about "Who will conquer Conquest's heart?"

Gregor T. Snail: The top Worm Tumblr Sexyman (according to brocktonbay's poll). His legal middle name is "The".

John Stiles: A personification of wartime trauma and violence who's also a single dad? Very much not Bachelor material. (I assume.)

Tattletale: Sure, put the aroace queen of the Megalopolis at the center of your romantic reality TV show. An aroace queen known for manipulating people into unanticipated self-destructive spirals. What could go wrong?

Blake and/or Rose Thorburn: Feels self-explanatory. Can't decide if it would be funnier to make them a package deal, or to make one the Bachelor(ette) and the other one of the contestants.

Toadswallow: I need to look up a synonym for self-explanatory. Um...unambiguous? That doesn't feel like it means the same thing. Self-evident sounds too similar. Let's go with "straightforward". (He's in a committed relationship, but Bubbleyum's a goblin; she'd probably open it up if she thought it would be funny.)

Mark "Marquis" Wies: The top Worm Tumblr Sexyman (according to parahumans-online's poll). No known legal name. It's possible he inherited an actual French aristocratic ti—wait, they did the guillotine thing. Um...it's possible he inherited an actual French-Canadian aristocratic title.

Dr. Jessica Yamada: The show would constantly get sidetracked by Yamada's attempts to untangle the contestants' issues, much to the dismay of the producers.

Who else should be considered?

(For the sake of argument, let's stick to characters who were adults in a significant portion of their source texts. The idea of a romance reality show featuring magical middle schoolers and/or underaged science experiments does sound funny, but I feel like most of that comes from the "underaged Bachelor/ette" part than the actual characters.)
