Sometimes when you’re heavy into the shooting or editing of a picture, you get to the point where you don’t know if you could ever do it again.

Martin Scorsese on the film set of Goncharov in Naples, a city far from his own Sicilian roots.

Here he directs Robert De Niro, a scene ultimately cut by the studios, against Scorsese’s stringent wishes, to cut the run time of the movie on its limited release in 1973.

The fight with the studio almost led Scorsese to give up film directing. But he would ultimately go on to direct both Harvey Keitel and De Niro in Mean Streets (1973) where he would continue to explore thematic questions of good and evil, religion, guilt, and violence, that he began with Goncharov.

The cut scene can be seen for the first time as a DVD extra on the recently released edition from Criterion Collection.

I love you 𝗧𝗼𝗺 that makes his 𝗗𝗲 𝗡𝗶𝗿𝗼's face whenever he can 🤭 He doesn't miss an opportunity to do it in the photos, not even in the new ones that there were the other day by 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗴 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝘀 🤣

I read people out there who say they are tired of him doing that and they consider themselves fans 😧 I think if you are a true fan you shouldn't care so much about that, or like me you would love him making them, it's adorable 💞

Well, the other day I said that I was very moved, it was because we hadn't seen him for almost 3 weeks 🥺💖 I can't deal well when he takes a long time to appear in a fan photo lately... I love him very much and I just want to see he is well, once or twice a week at least, I don't ask for much 🙏🏻

Bueno, el otro día dije que me conmoví mucho, fue porque llevábamos casi 3 semanas sin verlo 🥺💖 No llevo bien cuando se tarda mucho en aparecer en una foto fan últimamente... Le quiero muchísimo y solamente quiero ver que está bien, una o dos veces a la semana al menos, no pido tanto 🙏🏻
