Scouse Snape would be totally iconic because all the best people are, but take it from a Scouser who found herself horribly out of place at a posh uni - that is one accent that simply cannot be lost no matter how many elocution lessons Lucius sets up.

(I think Cokeworth’s the Black Country, though ‘Dudley’ as a name choice seems a bit on the nose for a Petunia trying to escape her origins, very possibly Stoke, definitely no further north than Crewe. Derby/Nottingham/Leicester don’t quite feel right to me but I have no idea why they don’t)

I’ll be honest, I’m excited too, but I’m the same time, it’s hard to be excited. We grew up with the movies, fell in love with the cast, and while hopefully the series will give us a better adaptation (btw I love the idea to show Sirius in Azkaban at the end of PS and the first episode being the last week Jily is alive) but on the other hand…

Robbie Coltrane is Hagrid for me.

Alan Rickman is Snape.

Dame Maggie Smith is my Professor McGonagall.

It’s gonna be hard (for me) to see the characters we love played by someone else, but on the flip side, my inner child is screaming in happiness to get an accurate adaption of Harry Potter. I will say, theres a rumor that Tom Felton is gonna play Lucius Malfoy and if that happens I will shit myself. Or cry of happiness. Fuck, maybe both.

OKAY.

But can I just say, I also want whoever they cast as James to be like haunting Sirius in Azkaban. Like could you imagine at the end of an episode, just seeing Sirius sitting there all vacant-looking. The Dementors walk by and he slumps onto the floor and James is looming over him being like, "It's your fault we're dead."

IT WOULD BREAK ME.

Then another snippet of Azkaban in COS when Hagrid is taken to Azkaban and Sirius just watches him, like that was the spark that kind of started to drag him out of his depression.

THEN the opening scene of POA is Sirius more coherent asking for the paper and seeing Peter on Ron's shoulder.

I DIGRESS.

But, yeah, I mean I see how some of those actors are iconic as those characters. I also kind of separate the movies from the books. They're just different. I feel like the TV show would just be different as well. I'm not really worried about the recasts. I mean, people got over Michael Gambon becoming Dumbledore. I think I'm in the minority, but I liked him better as Dumbledore.

The War on Drugs Live Show Review: 2/10, Chicago Theatre

As much as The War on Drugs these days get compared to stadium rockers like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen, or Don Henley, their songs are a masterclass in patience. Sure, you could argue that they’ve always been deliberate in their ability to build up songs--any live performance of “Under the Pressure” demonstrates their gradual nature--but their instrumentation shimmers infinitely on songs that aren’t fist-pumping anthems. Last night at the Chicago Theatre, even diehard fans of the band knew to conserve their energy. Everyone in the building stood up to welcome them to the stage, but as Adam Granduciel started singing “Old Skin” from their latest record I Don’t Live Here Anymore (Atlantic), most folks sat back down, not out of disappointment, but in preparation for standing up when Charlie Hall’s kick drum finally did come in.

Though Granduciel’s pristine vocals and meandering lyrics and guitar playing drive The War on Drugs, the gaps the rest of the band fills in makes the journey worthwhile. Guitarist Anthony LaMarca and Hall give you all the evidence you need to Granduciel’s claim that “I’ve been drifting” on Slave Ambient’s chugging highlight “Come to the City”. “Victim”, squealing pedal work and all, wouldn’t carry the same reflective emotional weight without Robbie Bennett’s dramatic keyboard motif. Jon Natchez sometimes plays keyboards, too, but it’s his ever-present saxophone that gives almost every song an almost eerie undercurrent. Eliza Hardy Jones has joined the band on keyboards and backing vocals, not just filling in for Lucius on “I Don’t Live Here Anymore” but enhancing the songs in comparison to their studio versions by providing delicate harmonies on “Pain” and “I Don’t Want to Wait”. And though multi-instrumentalist David Hartley was off last night and is back tonight, the band’s tour manager stepped in to replace him, because of course The War on Drugs have a tour manager who can do that.

There are aspects of the band’s current live show that you’d expect from a stadium rock band, from meaty snares to a killer light show. But with their expansive sound comes just as many opportunities to experiment. They bookended “Harmonia’s Dream” with glitchy lights and a syncopated instrumental. And for the first time I’ve ever seen, they played “The Animator” before “Come to the City”, the droniest synth you’ll see at a big show this side of “The Streets Have No Name”. Every year, more and more, it seems like The War on Drugs are truly living in the space between.
