You just cannot understand it. In his eyes everything seems pretty simple: you love him, he loves you. You and that personality which had charmed him. You and that perfect body he adored since the beginning even if you either rolled your eyes or shied away whenever he said. Indeed, it is as simple as he puts it. He loves you, everything about you, no matter your sceptic gaze when he told you’re the first time and many others after it.

He has learned to come to terms with all your so-called quirks, minus one. The fact that you never show some appreciation for yourself. Do not mistake me, he doesn’t mind a bit that he had to reassure you over and over again that you are beautiful. Well, he wouldn’t mind if you believed him after it, and unfortunately for both of you that’s not the case. However, you will also have to deal with one of his flaws in exchange, his determination to make you trust his words.

So, he will come from behind and wrap his arms around his waist when you stare judgingly at the mirror for too long. Kiss your shoulder, your cheek, and even the tears that sometimes escape your control in those kinds of situations. Whisper to your ear that your body is straight from the descriptions of old goddess. Caress every part of it as long you are comfortable. Introduce to others with a proud look on his face and a smirk in his lips as “my partner”.  Trace patterns all over your skin, draw lines and mindless forms over everything you call imperfections. Scars or stretch marks, he does not care. For him they become notes in a symphony he would love to hear time after time.

When a girl admires him from the distance, he will give them a sharp and irritated glance and tighten his grip around you. Both mordacious and innocent comments that can thrill your insecurities will be met by his biting remarks. And for him everything will pay off the day you learn to treat and see yourself with the same utter devotion he does.

“That boy is going to ruin his sword.” Lady Catelyn mutters from beside you, her eyes trained on her eldest son on the edge of the tree line. Her hands fidget with the end of her braid.

Your own eyes gaze out to see your betrothed, hacking away at a tree stump, his grunts echoing throughout the silent camp.

News of Ned Stark’s horrid death spread through the camp quickly only hours prior, and the men had hid in their tents to mourn the Lord of Winterfell. It was a gloomy day, appropriately reflecting the mood of the solemn North. The clouds were heavy and grey, the air still smelling of the earlier rain.

Sighing, you watch Robb hit anything within arms reach. His moves are erratic, it's obvious even from this distance. Your teeth tease your bottom lip uneasily.

“I should go to him…” Lady Catelyn sighs, her lips tilted down into a frown.

Your hand rests on her shoulder, stopping the older woman from moving. “My Lady, you just lost your husband…go grieve. I will talk to Robb.”

Lady Catelyn nods, her eyes vacant as she turns towards her own tent. You watch her leave, making sure she gets to her destination safely before trudging through the mud to your betrothed.

The mud clings to your nice shoes, and at this point you don’t bother hiking your skirts up to avoid the filth below you. Your eyes stay trained on Robb, his forceful movement never ceasing.

A few feet away from him, you hear his grunts of anguish and frustration, his tunic dotted with sweat. You let his take one more swing at the rotting stump before you cough to gain his attention.

“Robb, I think that is enough…”

Robb freezes before slowly turning to face you. His auburn curls untamed and his blue eyes burning brighter with rage. You’ve never seen him like this at all, not when he first heard his father was taken prisoner in King’s Landing, nor when he discovered that someone had sent assassins to kill Bran. Your eyes widen at the state of your betrothed, fidgeting in place. He pants heavily as he looks at you.

“I’ll kill them! I swear to every god out there, I will kill the Lannisters for what they have done!” Robb seethes, his face red with anger. “It is only what those murderous pricks deserve.”

He flings his sword down, taking deep ragged breaths. You don’t flinch at his uncharacteristic anger, instead you inch closer to your betrothed.

All at once, as if the adrenaline drains out of him, Robb falls to his knees, his blue eyes trained on the mud beneath your feet as they glimmer with tears.

You drop down with him, taking his head in your hands, leaning your forehead against your lover’s.

“Oh darling…” You whisper, watching the grief take over his features. Your heart breaks seeing him so vulnerable.

“My father is dead,” He sobs, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. “They have to pay for what they have done.”

“They will, Robb, they will suffer for their cruelty towards the North," You tell him softly, lifting your head to place a delicate kiss on his forehead.

Robb glances up as well, his tears subsiding. “And I will protect you, my dearest. No Lannister will ever harm you,” There is a quick burst of fire behind those usually cool eyes. “they would not dare.”

“Robb—“ Your fingertips brush over his stubble.

“They have taken my sisters hostage and they have killed my father, but they will not take my wife from me.”

Heat creeps up your neck at his passionate words. You and Robb had not yet been wed but hearing his call you his wife causes you to shiver.

“I swear it to you, my love,” Robb continues, taking your hands in his rough hands, squeezing them tightly between your two closely crouched bodies. “They will not touch you.”

“I believe you, darling, I do.” You reply lightly, squeezing back, attempting to convey how much trust and love you’re filled with for him.

The sky seems to lighten, clouds parting ever so slightly to let the sun peek through enough to shine down on your camp. The moist air of the Riverlands clings onto your skin as the few rays of sun beats down on your exposed skin making your position unbearable.

Wordlessly, you and Robb rise, chins up despite the situation that just occurred. Your hands hold onto his arm as the two of you, side by side, walk back into the center of camp, ready for war.

Endless Works in Progress

For now, #10, which is the hockey and ice dancer aus.

I've made several different starts at a Cutting Edge au for @tall-wolf-of-tarth and still haven't managed to complete one. The current hockey player Brienne and ice dancer Jaime version is the closest I've come yet.

Occasionally I write little blurbs when I'm starting a story, and I have one for this: Brienne Tarth looks like a goon and handles the puck like a god.

Jaime Lannister looks like a god and acts like a monster.

After one hard hit too many, Brienne faces forced retirement or the very real threat of death. Her father wants her to come home and coach the Tarth Evenstars, the family minor league team, but it feels too much like coming home with her tail tucked between her legs.

Jaime loses his sister, his lover, his skating partner, and his hand in one horrible, drunken night.

Brienne can't bring herself to risk her life on the ice. No one wants to pair with a one-handed figure skater.

Enter Syrio Forel (or another character, perhaps) who has a new idea: gender-bending, accessible ice dancing. Gender nonconforming hockey player + one-handed figure skater = chemistry that sets the ice on fire.

Excerpt:

"Call the fucking penalty!" Greatjohn bellowed. Slammed his fists against the boards in front of the bench.

The ref skated over. Tall, thin, weasel-faced. One of the Freys. All of the refs were Freys. That was the problem playing in the Riverlands.

Earlier in the season, they'd been fine. Called penalties for the Direwolves but for the opposing team, too.

Not that night. The Lions opened rough. Nothing called. Rougher in the second. Still nothing. Every single member of the Direwolves starting defence had been in the box at least once. The Hound had been in twice already.

Was headed that way a third time until he ended up face to face with his brother.

The Mountain was a monster of a man. Even Sandor looked surprisingly small next to him. Three times, Sandor held him off. Took a hit, stayed on his skates. Slammed into the boards, bounced straight back into his brother. Knocked flat into the ice, scrambled to his knees then his feet.

Three times, Sandor protected Robb Stark.

The fourth time, the Mountain drove him head first into the corner of the boards. His head went down. His body twisted. His legs jerked up.

He collapsed in the corner, a heap of a man, muscle and rage stilled, and did not get up.
