Thursday December 14th
On campus again today. After picking up a book at the University College library, I’m working at Robart’s library this evening. But on a different floor this time to change things up.
As this paper nears completion the book stack gets larger. I am glad it will be finished today (it has to be, it’s due at midnight), but I will miss the process. It’s been nice to get back into the groove of schoolwork after everything.

Superkül renovates reading room at Toronto's brutalist Robarts Library
Canadian studio Superkül has updated the reading room at the University of Toronto’s Robarts Library, a notable example of brutalist architecture. The project involved renovating the cavernous concrete space on the building’s fourth floor, as part of the university’s larger initiative to revitalise the Robarts Library, which Superkül described as “one of North America’s most significant examples…

Uoft update:
Dear Students,
As has been widely reported by news media, what began as a peaceful protest yesterday morning evolved throughout the day. Last night, a significant number of individuals, many from outside the U of T community, were on the St. George campus for a large rally. Today, encampment participants and many tents remain on site. We have also seen small counter-protests. The campus remains open, and academic and operational activities are proceeding as usual.
We have been communicating with a student representative of the participants in the encampment through in-person meetings and written correspondence. We have conveyed our expectations and shared our observations regarding actions that have contravened them, including lack of crowd control, health and safety risks, destruction of property, and use of language that is considered discriminatory, threatening or hateful. We have made it clear that these activities fall outside of our policies and relevant law and are considered unauthorized on our private property; this puts those who are in the encampment at risk of being charged with trespass and destruction of property.
The University has received several questions and reports of concerning language as described above being used in signs and chants. Please know that we take these seriously and all instances are being reviewed.
Effective 5pm today, most University buildings will be locked this weekend and require fob-access, as per normal practice. Gerstein Library and Robarts Library will remain open to members of the U of T community.
We recognize there are diverse views in our community about the current situation. We continue to focus on avoiding conflict, being measured in our response, and fostering an environment that makes space for debate. We urge everyone to engage constructively with one another.
All of our communications on this matter and resources for our community can be found on www.utoronto.ca/utogether. We remain hopeful that we will come to a peaceful resolution.
Sincerely,
Professor Sandy Welsh
Vice-Provost, Students
Professor Kelly Hannah Moffatt

Monday April 15th
I started today late, but that’s ok. I was just so tired from all the final papers and exams last week. 😵‍💫
I took it slow today; taking time to see the cherry blossoms and grab a nice lunch on campus. Now I am in the main library for some paper writing. I have two small papers and a book report left for the semester. I plan to get the two small papers done this afternoon. I can see the end of the semester, and I couldn’t be more excited for some time off!

For those reluctant to follow links, here is the work in question:
Song of the Worm
Cook, Eliza (1818 - 1889)
Original Text
The Poetical Works of Eliza Cook (London: Frederick Warne and Co., [1869]): 181-82. PR 4502 A17 1869 Robarts Library
THE worm, the rich worm, has a noble domain
In the field that is stored with its millions of slain;
The charnel-grounds widen, to me they belong,
With the vaults of the sepulchre, sculptured and strong.
The tower of ages in fragments is laid,
Moss grows on the stones, and I lurk in its shade;
And the hand of the giant and heart of the brave
Must turn weak and submit to the worm and the grave.
Daughters of earth, if I happen to meet
Your bloom-plucking fingers and sod-treading feet--
Oh! turn not away with the shriek of disgust
From the thing you must mate with in darkness and dust.
Your eyes may be flashing in pleasure and pride,
'Neath the crown of a Queen or the wreath of a bride;
Your lips may be fresh and your cheeks may be fair--
Let a few years pass over, and I shall be there.
Cities of splendour, where palace and gate,
Where the marble of strength and the purple of state;
Where the mart and arena, the olive and vine,
Once flourished in glory; oh! are ye not mine?
Go look for famed Carthage, and I shall be found
In the desolate ruin and weed-covered mound;
And the slime of my trailing discovers my home,
'Mid the pillars of Tyre and the temples of Rome.
I am sacredly sheltered and daintily fed
Where the velvet bedecks, and the white lawn is spread;
I may feast undisturbed, I may dwell and carouse
On the sweetest of lips and the smoothest of brows.
The voice of the sexton, the chink of the spade,
Sound merrily under the willow's dank shade.
They are carnival notes, and I travel with glee
To learn what the churchyard has given to me.
Oh! the worm, the rich worm, has a noble domain,
For where monarchs are voiceless I revel and reign;
I delve at my ease and regale where I may;
None dispute with the worm in his will or his way.
The high and the bright for my feasting must fall--
Youth, Beauty, and Manhood, I prey on ye all:
The Prince and the peasant, the despot and slave;
All, all must bow down to the worm and the grave.
Publication Start Year 1869
never let anyone tell you that trawling through mediocre victorian poetry isn't worth it. we just happened upon an absolute BANGER of a worm poem. go read it or else 🪱🪱🪱
