Hard to believe Nine Inch Nails' classic The Downward Spiral is 30 years old today! Here is some detail photography I took of the original album cover painting by Russell Mills for the 10th anniversary deluxe edition release, which I had the unique honor of designing, and somehow that is now 20 year old.
Everyone has that one album that hit at just the right moment of adolescence to change their perspective on music and get them through their teenage angst. The Downward Spiral was that album for me, released as it was in 1994, when I was a freshman in high school (and an absolute banner year for music/films/games all around). I must have stared at the artwork for hours over those years, without even much detail to draw from on its tiny 5” CD slip case. So five years later, when I found myself inexplicably working for Nine Inch Nails, it was surreal to see the actual original painting in the flesh, hanging as it was at the time in Trent Reznor’s office at Nothing Studios, New Orleans.
I was struck by how much dimension and texture there was in the artwork that never translated on that tiny slipcase printing, how much detail was happening in the physical materials of the art: Flies, moths, wires, blood… I had been staring at this “painting” for so long, yet suddenly it was like I had never seen it before. I also noticed that it had aged - the wires had wilted over the years, drooping down from their original position as captured in the original album cover (interestingly, judging by the photo posted today by NIN, the piece has since been restored); a tooth was missing from the other main piece.
That experience stuck with me and it was the first thing I thought about when the task of re-imagining the album package fell upon me in 2004. I wanted to re-photograph the artwork, subtly updating the cover to show that ten years had changed it physically, much like our perceptions of art and music and memories change over time with perspective. I also wanted to dig into the previously unseen details of the work and explore it with my macro lens, so that fans like me, old and new, could have new layers of texture to pore over for hours while listening to a legendary album.
Happy birthday, old friend.

i wish that there was more time between the day of black sun and sozin's comet bc zuko's official desertion from the fire nation would have the most insane ripple effects (and it would be nice to see the gaang interacting a bit more than we got but hey i'll take what i can get)
zuko's desertion would have been essentially impossible for the fire nation to bury since it was such a big deal that he returned at all. so i imagine the smear campaign against zuko would have been craaazy. i think it would have been interesting for the gaang to try and deal with that when navigating the FN. zuko would be very recognisable i think at this point, and it would have made staying hidden much harder. would they still have chosen ember island? maybe the kids didn't recognise zuko and azula during The Beach , but with the prince of the fire nation committing treason would there be more wanted posters? would there be more talk around the island? would zuko have to remain hidden while the rest go out and get food?
i wonder if zuko deserting and very meaningly committing his loyalty to the avatar influenced other soldiers in the FN to also desert? or would it have had the opposite effect and made people feel more patriotic since zuko was banished, returned under the guise of having killed the avatar, and then left when aang announced his survival to world during the failed invasion?
SPEAKING OF THAT!! the rumours around this would be INSANE. we know what really happened, but the public don't. did zuko and the avatar plan this so that there would be an inside man during the invasion and then zuko used that chaos to escape? what really happened in ba sing se if zuko didn't kill aang, but azula thought that he did? (again: we, the audience know the truth, but the general public don't). if zuko and the avatar where working together... for how long? was iroh involved somehow since he also disappeared the same time that zuko did? did iroh get captured on purpose to be close to zuko to possibly help him if needed? did zuko break iroh out of jail or did one of the guards or was iroh alone? you could spiral on this as just an average person in the avatar world for years like. if youtube existed in atla imagine the video essays breaking down all the conspiracies
its a kids show so obviously Nothing Bad Happened BUT in the Boiling Rock, zuko getting found out as not only an imposter (already, a very bad situation), a traitor (extremely bad), AND the traitorous (ex) prince of the fire nation (devastatingly terrible) would have been... incredibly dangerous for zuko. in zuko and iroh's original wanted poster, the official translation says “Permission is granted to kill them on sight” and this was before zuko has gone right ahead and committed Treason On Purpose. the warden is not going to be nice. when the warden visits zuko in his cell he literally tells him "If these criminals found out who you are, the traitor prince who let his nation down, why they'd tear you to shreds." the boiling rock would be hell trying to survive. it also puts a lot more weight on zuko refusing to leave sokka in their first escape attempt. also ozai obviously knew that he has his son was in prison bc he... broke in to the prison bc azula was there but then zuko manages to escape with sokka (another imposter) and suki and hakoda (POWs) and chit sang (a prisoner) and two of azula's trusted friends end up in prison for treason as well i just. that is literally insane for the average person to hear about. again, THE CONSPIRACIES!!
when zuko eventually does take the throne there's a lot of conjecture around what zuko did while he was banished and moreso, what he did the second time he left, this time voluntarily. i think zuko's loyalty would be questioned a lot; by other world leaders who are understandably wary about the fire nation and its motivations, but also by its own people - some who believe that zuko is a traitor to his country and is trying to sabotage it since he helped end the war.
idk these are all just me rambling but it would been so interesting to explore the implications of zuko leaving the fire nation and how that would have impacted the gaang and how they interacted with others in their travels. there are so many fic where zuko joins the gaang early, but neither myself with the aus that I have written, nor many that ive read have explored this very much or at all.

Gods, I'm going feral over the friendships on OUAT. the ones we could've had. especially for killian
belle and killian. ESPECIALLY after after the frozen arc. bonding over their hate for Rumple, Belle realising killian was right, forgiving him, killian forgiving himself, bonding over books. killian telling her about his travels.
robin & killian. learning about the modern world together. going through relationship woes together. double dates with CS & OQ. both being outlaws and anti-monarchists while dating royals. the honour and good form that keeps them both in line.
regina and killian. both villains, both trying their best to redeem themselves for the sake of loved ones. fearing that their happy endings will never come (or that they'll lose them). fearing that their misdeeds were so awful they can never atone for them. supporting and keeping each other from relapsing. they both understand the pull of the darkness, ESPECIALLY when darkness plays on your grief and loss of loved one. they both had to put on personnas of power (Queen, Captain) in order to hide the broken mess underneath.
bigger emphasis on Killians' relationship and parallels with David. especially the whole brotherhood notion. Killian's relationship with Henry and how they both helped each other grieve Neal/Bae's death.
Gods. it would've been so good. we were robbed

Jody is so oddly prickly and defensive with Cas in 15x12. It's an unexpected dynamic, especially considering they just met...and kinda hilarious.
CAS: Yeah. Um, Jody, I’d… I’d like to ask you to stay as well. JODY (snapping): What is that? Some kind of B.S. male chivalry thing? CAS: No. No, it’s not. Jody, it’s, uh, well. You know, I was never able to make things right with Claire, what I took from her. I mean… I’m never gonna be able to make that right. But you and Claire found each other, and she has you now. If something goes wrong with this rescue, and… and Kaia isn’t saved… Claire will be devastated, but she’ll survive. She already has. But if she loses you both… JODY (resigned): That’d kill her. CAS: Yeah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keepin' it real though. She's not exactly wrong about Cas's ridiculous chivalric tendencies. (Maybe Dean or Claire has bitched about it one too many times, and Jody has a preconceived notion of Cas's tendency to be overprotective?)
///
Nevertheless, this dynamic is refreshing! Too often Jody (imho) can come off written like a wizened crone for the boys--endlessly patient and full of timely wisdom. Here, she's reacting like a human being. She's assuming the worst. It's great!
Honestly, we deserved more of Jody getting defensive and snappy around Cas. Imagine it with me... Jody and Cas are on a case, and Sam and Dean are baffled at her tendency to berate him for no apparent reason.
Imagine further: Jody taking Sam's side whenever Sam gets snippy with Cas, and it's golden because, in response, Dean and Claire get irrationally offended and weird about defending Cas. (Sam deserves someone to take his side sometimes. Why not Jody?)
///
I also like the idea of Jody and Alex being oddly wary of Cas on Claire's behalf.
On the one hand, Jody knows Cas as the Winchesters' trusted ally and friend and the mangel that Dean loves. On the other, he destroyed Claire's father and even possessed Claire, and that makes Jody sick to her stomach.
And yet, Claire clearly adores him and craves his attention. She gushes about his dopey emoji texts, and she still sleeps with the Grumpy Cat he got her. It's so complicated.
///
Bonus points if Dean confronts Jody about her prickliness and she blurts out that part of the problem is Cas is attractive and that fact lets him get away with too much, and Dean has a little meltdown on the spot.
Bonus bonus points if while on the case, someone assumes that Cas is Jody's ex-husband and that Claire is their daughter.
I just want everyone to be so uncomfortable that their insides are shriveling up, really.

I would pay good money for members of the Supernatural cast to record meditations either in character or as themselves.
