Nine Inch Nails: Tension 2013 tour posters, designed by me featuring artwork made by Russell Mills for NIN’s 2013 Hesitation Marks album. So much happened in 2013, at such a dizzying pace, it’s hard to believe the Tension tour was already underway at this time ten years ago, after everything else that had already happened that year.

Over on my Patreon I wrote quite a bit about the design and art direction process of Hesitation Marks, the connections between this imagery and The Downward Spiral, working with Russell Mills, the concept behind the minimal NIN logo, and the philosophies of NIN design through the 90s, from Gary Talpas to David Carson. If you’re interested in the intricacies of this type of stuff, you’ll probably enjoy the read.

I’ll definitely have more to share about the Tension tour and other reflections from 2013 in the final months of its 10th anniversary year.

1989 cloth sticker.

This “fractured” design was used in the launch promotion for “pretty hate machine” and remained in use until mid-1990. There is another version of this cloth sticker without the outer white border that was used as a tour pass. Both versions are very hard to find, but this one is the earlier of the two and doesn’t show up very often.

Se volete avere un’idea di quanto sia bravo Gary Oldman come attore, sono due i film che dovete assolutamente guardare. Il primo è L'ora più buia, del 2018, nel quale interpreta Winston Churchill. Ha preso l'Oscar per questo suo ruolo. Il secondo film è del 2012. S'intitola La talpa. Ha vinto l'Oscar anche per quello. Lo hanno tratto dal celeberrimo e omonimo romanzo di Le Carré. Che ha effettivamente lavorato come spia nell'MI6, il servizio segreto britannico. Il regista è quello dell'horror norvegese Lasciami entrare. Le sue cadenze narrative sono essenziali e pulite. Ogni cosa è dove dovrebbe essere. Soprattutto Gary Oldman.

I remember one summer when my cousin Criss and I were changing channels. We came across MTV when the video for Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” played. We totally got it with all the over-exaggerations and the swanky, low-cost Bible Belt and Middle America jokes Chris Cornell and company offered.

Then came Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer” and we were mesmerized. We never expected having to figure out everything that unfolded before us. The (censored) full-frontal nudity, the old men with nasty faces, spinning pig heads, real spewing pulsating hearts, pierced women joined at the hair, and somewhere in the mix of it all a normal little girl. “Closer” started with a creepy throbbing beat that gradually accumulated itself into a mess of sexuality, desire, and relief. I never seen or heard anything like it up to that point, when the last four or five years of my life were nothing but listening to a golden-era hip-hop dream.

I sought out The Downward Spiral and I totally immersed myself in it; and all the videos, lyrics, Gary Talpas and Russell Mills artwork, typeset, import singles, and its’ non-album B-sides - all of it. It was my introduction to industrial music and Nine Inch Nails was exclusively my go-to for two years as Broken, Fixed, and Pretty Hate Machine were on heavy rotation. The album was used as a bargaining chip when I met a group of girls in a totally unfamiliar town not far from me. They, too, were into Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, and alternative music in general. The sugar was that sweet that I had to have it.

Then came Filter, Ministry, KMFDM, and Skinny Puppy later on. Cleopatra, Wax Trax. More Nine Inch Nails’ albums followed even if we had to wait painfully for them. The “secret album” Still, Year Zero, Ghosts I-IV, the five t-shirts I have of theirs. Seeing them with Peaches and Bauhaus at Jones Beach one summer. The e.p. trilogy. “Leaving Hope” and “Over and Out”. The countless other industrial outfits and the newfound appreciation and re-discovery of an era I now fondly look back on. And now we’re here.

You obviously see that The Downward Spiral totally changed my life. Without it, I wouldn’t be the industrialist that I am today.

I have nothing but fond memories of Pretty Hate Machine. The black cassette was the only thing on a very intensive non-stop loop on my Walkman during many April or May blue-sky days. Knowing well when “Down In It” came on, I was treated to some very deep bass-thumping and intensive focus on my part.

The following year I found both "Head Like A Hole" and "Down In It", the first purchase I made at Broadway Mall’s The Wall right after saying good-bye to my friends from Plainview. Shortly thereafter, a young blonde girl from Bayside randomly struck a conversation with me and I used them as a bargaining chip to get her number. Too bad the conversation was cut short when her ride came to pick her up.
