Road to 3D- Sam Manson (Part 1):
Model sheet
Part 2: Character Modeling
Hi! On my recent posts of my 3d models I got many asking questions about how I made them. I'm currently working on a 3d Sam model from scratch and so I thought I can document my process here and add some thoughts through my process.
Before I can model anything in 3d I need a reference and a plan. For characters this means I need to create a model sheet, so here we are.
Some disclaimer first before I continue:
I'm just a self-taught hobby artist not a professional or proper art student. The infos I write here down are just the things I do and can be completly wrong or different in a professional setting.
This is not a tutorial or a step-by-step-guide for character design or how to make character sheets in general. Just additional things that I pay attention to when I make a model sheet for my 3d models.
As someone who just does 3d modeling in my freetime for 2 1/2 years I see myself still as a beginner. I'm still in a experimenting with different techniques and artstyle. This and the following posts describes just stuff I do for this model, it could be some other method next if I feel this didn't work out that well. Nothing is set in stone.
I do the 3d models just for myself for practice and for fun, you cannot download them anywhere. I just post screenshots and do sometime animations to archive my progress.
Under the cut are my thoughts of how I approach a model sheet for a 3d character:
First things first I search for references and make some rough sketches to decide how I want the character to look like. I found this image of a character on pinterest ( anyone knows who the artist is? I cannot find the original source) and use this as a reference for my Sam model.
After the inital phase I first draw the front side of the character. For a 3d model I need a symmetrical neutral character in a T-pose, an A-pose or a standing pose in which the arms doesn't obscure the body. This makes it easier to model and rig them late on.
Speaking of obscuring the body it's also better to have a character without their clothes on and in multiple angles. It is easier to model the character's full body first and then model the clothes around it as an anchor point.
The most import angles for me are the front and side view. The other angles are more for the details to get the likeness right. I try to model the front view most accurately and the sideview is more for the proportions. I don't often see people only from the side view so whatever I draw from the side cannot 100% be accurately be modeled like that. I also made a different side view on the right with the arm seperated from the body, this makes it easier block in the form of the body and it's easier to model the arm and hand seperatly because hands are not only difficult to draw but also difficult to model.
For the different angles I use a mannequin model in blender as a guide and reference. Clip studio paint (the painting program I use) has also 3d mannequins but I personally find them difficult to move around so I prefer to use blender for this.
When I'm finished with the model sheet I also make a quick turnaround animation to see if anything looks consistent enough.
Yeah that's it. Now onto the modelling process!

Settling it for all. Does kh2 really have the chokehold on the fandom that everyone says it does, or is that just that we kh2 fanboys are annoying as fuck.
Choose your favorite kh game. This is not necessarily the one you've played the most - for example bbs was the first one I did the platinum trophy for so ATM it has the most hours played, but its not my favorite. Play time doesn't equal favorite, the one you like the best is the favorite. choose that.

Something @literarybard & I have been working on (on and off), touched up models of DJ/NJ for our personal projects/VRchat!! J is handling the Unity biz, and I've been doing the texturing/modelling
To preface we are very new to both blender/unity, so we're working up to being more ambitious (these are MAJOR WIPS) with what we want out of these models
Obviously nothing insane but I've started adding custom textures like the planets, and some knitted texturing on Js sweater - my next step is to make my own textures overtop of the existing ones for higher quality/custom painting (as seen below, Neon Js monitor also has redone texturing), though I want to keep it within the style of the original
The end goal is to have a few alt model clothing, like the ones I conceptualised overtop of their references (seen below, I have posted these before and they were a hit), along with some other toggles including their props and to implement some awesome animation toggles too for VRC functionality - at the moment they have basic movement physics in the headphones, cape, sneaker lips, and DJ has a tilt effect in her head!
These models won't be available to others unless either of us give specific permission, we do not play on public vrchat worlds so they will be safe and snug within our grasp, im super excited to keep working on these and hopefully, eventually, the other nsrtists for friends/fun!

#did a bunch of pkmn from memory today. this and deoxys were the roughest#pokemon#heatmor#pokemon bw#sketches#considering this guys only on victory road in bw and therefore not a pokemon i look at too often: i’m preddy surprised i remembered the#braces around its wrists have little vents on them#unova#so the thought here is that its body- save for the ‘clay’ which is bare n tough skin- is furry rather than straight up lava#which i guess is the case? iirc it doesn’t emit light in the sprites or in the 3d games#but the yellow parts DO produce heat. the brighter they are the more intense the heat. etc

After running an entire experiment for over a year and a half
I have finally perfected the best order to play the Kingdom Hearts series in
The aforementioned best order has been completely play-tested by an outsider new to KH in order to verify its effectiveness, and it goes as follows:
Kingdom Hearts 1
Kingdom Hearts X [chi] and Kingdom Hearts Union X [cross]
Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep • (start with Ventus, then Terra, and end with Aqua. Include Final Ending. Exclude Secret Ending)
Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain Of Memories
Kingdom Hearts 2 • (followed by Kingdom Hearts BBS’s Secret Ending)
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days • (read Roxas’s diary alongside the cutscene movie if not playing the original release. Then read the secret reports after finishing the game)
Kingdom Hearts Re:Coded • (you may also play Coded if so desired)
Kingdom Hearts Dark Road
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep 0.2 A Fragmentary Passage
Kingdom Hearts 3
Kingdom Hearts 3 Re:Mind
Kingdom Hearts Missing Link

Extra notes:
DON’T FORGET THE SECRET BOSSES! All the cutscenes that precede and follow every secret boss fight is important, so I recommend looking them up on YouTube if you can’t beat them
ALWAYS READ THE SECRET REPORTS!!!! All of them. For every game
Look up BBS’s Secret Ending on YouTube, unless you feel like beating all three routes on Proud Mode (including the Mysterious Figure boss… I think. Idk, look it up)
As of writing this post, Missing Link and 4 have not been released yet, so they may be skipped for now. However, based on their trailer vibes alone, I’d still recommend this order whenever they do release
The mobile app for KHUX and KHDR has been discontinued, so the only source we currently have for them are cutscene movies on YouTube and Damo’s fandubs
The Dark Road fandub is not out yet as of posting this chart, but hopefully I can update this post whenever it does release (same with Missing Link cutscenes)
If you have any questions please reply to this post because I have answers!
Here are some obvious ones tho:
Days is AFTER 2 to preserve the Riku plot twist
Dark Road is BEFORE DDD to increase player attachment to Xehanort before he takes full control over the narrative
Ventus is played FIRST in BBS because it helps the narrative make more sense (sorry Nomura, Xehanort being evil is not a plot twist)
Any spoilers for future games revealed in the prequels are intentional (like Maleficent thinking about Master Xehanort in Union X, or Terra seeing a vision of KH2 Riku in BBS) and are meant to serve as foreshadowing
If anyone feels like streaming the games in this order please let me know. I skewed the results of my experiment a little by being present for the Test Subject’s playthrough, so it’d genuinely benefit from another account played entirely in a vacuum
But also we kind of sped through the games rather than relishing them. There’s so much to do in all the games but to get to the rest of the story we didn’t really play them to their fullest. I hope future players can enjoy all there is and take their time with it :3
