so the first time i watched ofmd, i think it was rory kinnear’s performance as nigel badminton that got me hooked. now i find myself quoting him all the time and i die laughing every rewatch because of him
and i think it’d be REALLY funny if he became my favorite character.
it’s like david jenkins said “oh yeah hi welcome this is my gay pirate show we have an amazing cast of colorful LGBTQ+ characters that are all each fun and quirky in their own way. who will you choose as your favorite?”
and i said “yeah hi i’ll take one straight white man.”

you know when you have a headcanon that like, you came up with because you thought it made sense but weren't that serious about nor really truly hc it then as time goes on, you realise that oh, yeah no, that headcanon is there to stay. that is forever part of your thoughts
that's been me with the idea of Nigel being autistic

Ed Roach's original promo video for Dennis' River Song + a bonus interview clip w/ Al on Dennis (& a little clip of 60s Dennis) that the orig broadcaster/uploader stuck at the beginning
Anyone know where this opening Al clip originally came from? Rest of the clip is Dennis in the studio with The Double Rock Baptist Choir & working on the song/album, introducing himself with his top tied round his neck, - all footage filmed by Ed Roach, walking to the airport with (I think/guess) Karen & walking through somewhere - pos through the airport, irc filmed for showing at the 1997 CBS convention - clips/bits appeared in the BBC4 documentary Legends: Dennis Wilson: The Real Beach Boy & other Beach Boys/Dennis (related) docs (& in a youtube fan video) but according to Ed on facebook this is the original full promo.
vimeo
Found this on a 'fanmade' dodgy ebay dvdr -took a punt hoping it'd be the rare original promo and not the fanmade version edited from archive clips from the episode of Legends, and it was. Rest of the contents was mostly easily found rips from youtube inc recent(ish) tv documentaries in the wrong aspect ration & fan made slideshows of Dennis photos set to his songs.

One of my favorite lines in the pilot is when Roach says, about Stede killing Nigel, that "it's always the quiet ones." Really lets us know how early we are in this man's journey because once he becomes even slightly more comfortable with himself Stede literally never stops talking. Gd bless

So I'm rewatching 2x04 and 2x05 and thinking about Lucius. And I think there's a decent chance that:
The Revenge is his first experience on a pirate ship, and
He and Stede are the only ones in this situation.
The show makes a point of telling us that the other people on the ship either have experience with pirating/violence, or have had a shit time of it so far.
We know Jim's backstory.
Olu doesn't have lots of combat experience, but between his "we have no other choice" speech and "la vida es dolor", he's had a rough go.
Roach sewed his own arm up once.
Wee John demonstrates his weapon with gusto and clearly has pyro experience.
Buttons just straight up tells us.
Pete may be lying (put him down as a maybe) but he's clearly happy to be here.
Frenchie was "in service" and has seen enough of the world to find it pretty blase.
The Swede could potentially be a maybe. We just know nothing about him.
We know that Lucius can read, and we know that he used to pick pockets, but he seems uncomfortable with violence in a way that only Stede shares. (See: "yeah he looks pretty stunned" re: Nigel Badminton)
So why am I thinking about this?
I think it's interesting that Lucius is the only one disturbed by Ed's weird half-apology speech in 2x05. AND I think there's a good chance that the horrors he experienced on the other ships (after getting thrown overboard) were yes, horrors, but also pretty standard for pirate life.
By this point in the show we have Archie, who gives us a window into how most pirates (who have never met Stede) would view the Kraken-era Revenge. And she seems to see it as... fairly normal? She's a bit perturbed by Izzy, and she's pissed at being asked to fight Jim, but she seems to see all the rest as pretty average.
This sets up a really juicy contrast between life under piracy in general vs. life under Stede piracy.
Lucius is the only character to experience pirate life when his *only prior pirate experience* was under Stede. That makes him a modern window into the show - he's like "wow this is fucking terrible", as we would no doubt agree if we were thrust into that situation.
Anyways, something about perspective, something about Lucius thinking his experiences have been uniquely violent when they probably haven't (not that they weren't awful), something about Blackbeard being a pirate but not a uniquely violent one, something about Izzy saying possibly his first true thing all show (yeah I lost a leg, I'm a fucking pirate, this happens all the time), something about how if Lucius told Archie about what he went through, she'd say "oh so you were... on a pirate ship? Yeah, piracy sucks, but so does everything else".
Something about how if any other crew members had that experience *before* meeting stede I think they'd find it pretty normal as well. Because the point of piracy in the show is that it's not a fun adventure, it's actually violent and awful and the people you care about are always at risk. (It's also one of the few ways to survive when there's not a place for you in a colonized world, I think? But I'm not the right person to write about that and others have said it better.)

My newest DnD character! This is Nigel Blunderbuss, he’s a half elf who managed to get the worst mix of elf and human genes and ended up looking more rat than either. He’s got a reputation of being a pathetic thief who keeps managing to get away with everything. He’s known among other thieves and cops as “The Roach” for how he’s near impossible to catch and harder to kill đŸȘł

1717. The Golden Age of Piracy. Wealthy UnderRealm Grifter William (Montague) Widemouth set out to find adventure and renown on the high seas. Things did not go as planned... Our Flag Means Pasta: An OFMD x Pastamonsters/Creepypasta Crossover AU
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
v Characters and Lore Below v
Or, check out everything I have stored on this AU in the Miro Board I've created for it! I update it with time as I create more artwork, characters, and add to the storyline, and even make episode timelines!
Characters in this AU:
The 'Retribution' Crew
Mr. Widemouth (William Montague Widemouth) as Stede Bonnet / Ben Drowned (Benjamin Lawman) as Lucius Spriggs / Jeff the Killer (Jeffrey Sepulveda-Ramirez) as Black Pete / Homicidal Liu (Liu Sepulveda-Ramirez) as Jim Jimenez / Eyeless Jack as Oluwande Boodhari / Ticci Toby (Tobias 'Toby' Eren Rogers) as Frenchie / Seedeater (Eedie) as Wee John / Kagekao as the Swede / Dr. Smiley as Roach / The Rake as Buttons
The 'Queen Lucia' Crew
Grinny (Oscar Delgado-Reyes)* as Edward Teach / Shadowlurker as Izzy Hands / Masky** as Fang / Hoodie* as Ivan
*Grinny is an OC of @oakmovies , however, for this AU, he is essentially a nearly different character, as his lore and background are vastly different.
**Masky and Hoodie in this AU are NOT the same people as their versions in Marble Hornets, and are instead entirely different people with different backstories.
Other Characters
Smile Dog (Smilin' Sam Dogham) as Calico Jack / Nurse Ann as Spanish Jackie / Splendorman as Nigel Badminton / Slenderman as Chauncey Badminton / Ms. (Priscilla) Pencilneck (another OC of @oakmovies) as Mary Allamby / Nina the Killer (Nina Rodriguez-Hopkins) as Archie / Jane the Killer as Mary Read (Jane Tod Richardson) / Clockwork (Natalie Ouellette) as Anne Bonney / Pinkamena (Bi Qi/繧çȘ) as Zheng Yi Sao
Character Backgrounds:
In this AU, and in this given time frame, the UnderRealm aristocracy is made up entirely of either monsters or spirits who were born and raised in the UnderRealm. Anyone who comes to the UnderRealm from the Surface world (killers, cursed, undead, etc.) is considered other, an outsider, and of lesser status, and this gap created upholds the aristocratic monster class. People who are born half-human are also considered lesser, and unless they were born to a monster of already aristocratic standing, they have very limited options in life in the UR.
UnderRealm: Widemouth, Ben (see also Spirit), Seedeater, The Rake, Shadowlurker, Slenderman, Splendorman
Spirits: Ben (Human from UK, died, then UR as corporeal spirit), Kagekao (Demon; Japan)
Half-Human:
Grinny (Mother - Mixed Taino/Spanish / Father - (Lower-class) Monster)
Smile (Father - UK / Mother - Cave Hound)
Ms. P (Father - UK / Mother - (Upper-class) Monster)
'Killer' Humans: Jeff, Liu, Toby, Dr. Smiley, Masky, Hoodie, Nina, Jane, Clockwork
Cursed/Possessed/Undead/Cannibal 'Humans': EJ (possessed/cursed/cannibal), Nurse Ann (Undead), Pinkamena (Cursed/Cannibal)
Lore (What's Different from PM/OFMD?)
Grinny/Oscar - The child of a feline-monster from the UnderRealm, and a half Taino woman from Puerto Rico. His mother was dragged to the UnderRealm by his father when she was a young lady, and lived in an abusive situation with him, until Oscar kills his father when he's 12. He runs away from home after this, and joins the crew of Captain Doyle (Hornigold for this AU - I have yet to draw another version of him for this AU, so here's @oakmovies rendition of him on IG). There, he meets Sam and Shadowlurker, and after they mutiny Doyle, he goes on to make a reputation for himself as the feared monster pirate Captain Grinny.
Jeff and Liu - Since Black Pete and Jim Jimenez in OFMD are not at all blood siblings the way Jeff and Liu are, but I was already set on them being these characters, I've created this backstory for them:
Jeff and Liu grow up with their family on a blood orange farm in St. Augustine, when one Christmas night, a gang known as the Siete BĂșhos attacks and kills their entire family. Instead of killing the siblings as well, they mutilate them, and set Jeff, and the rest of the farm, on fire. The two siblings manage to run away from the burning farm, and are taken in by a Satanic Nun.
The Nun raises them to master the art of killing, but only for the purpose of revenge. Jeff, however, has a different idea, and uses his new skills to rob and kill people for money. The nun acts to kick Jeff out of the convent, but Liu refuses to be separated from their brother, and leaves with him. Eventually, they meet Eyeless Jack, who gets them a job with Spanish Ann.
However, they find out that one of her husbands is the leader of the Siete BĂșhos, so one night, they get him drunk enough to restrain, torture, and kill him. After Ann finds out about this, she puts a price on Liu's head, and Jack has to escape with the two siblings, where they then join Widemouth's crew among The Retribution.

đŸ”Ș gimme all your Roach thoughts
đŸˆâ€âŹ›ïž Frenchie too.
My two favorite characters aside from Ed!!!
Ok to start off with Roach. In an ofmd discord server i am it but has sadly died, I once got told I was protective of Roach. And I mean, this man is a world class chef in my mind and I see him as needing food to be perfect, so I will defend him on that. And with season two, he invented peanut paste, or peanut butter, which is what my url is named after!
Also his crazed love of torture is so lovable to me. I love a crazed character, and even rooted for him to be able to torture the hostages because he wouldn’t go all the way. And how excited he was to cut off Lucius’s finger was priceless.
He also has some pf the best one-liners. “Come back, this is all a dream, come back!”, “knives are knives, meat’s meat” “mm we’re tender as hell” “we eat, but how often do we taste” and those are just the ones that come to mind now. He is so funny and chaotic I absolutely adore him and Samba being such a gem definitely adds to it.
Oh Frenchie, where do I begin with Frenchie. The fact that the first piece of art that wasn’t a sketch from memory I did for OMFD was of Frenchie says a lot in of itself (should I post it here? I don’t think I did). I will say I am so sad as a witch with 3 cats that he would be afraid of me because he is someone I would love to be friends with!!!
To start off, I love his songs. I have the words to “To Death We Go” (the full version) memorized and have sang it a lot. Also the fact that he was willing to play his lute for Ed’s song is iconic!!!
This man is also so smart??? Like the ability to think on the fly and even more think of scams on the fly is soo impressive he needs so much more credit. Also he is the kind of guy who is always aware of what is going on. He is the one who asked Ed if the crew was going to live or die, he is the one who found the invitation to the fancy party, and unlike Stede’s first reaction was completely supportive of Ed after he got mocked at said party. Where Stede said “How could you?” Frenchie said “they’re such dicks about spoons!”. Not to mention he almost definitely helped Stede get the information necessary in order for Stede to get the aristocrats to turn on each other. This guy has such street and emotional smarts that he is such an amazing addition to the cast and why I wanted him to fill Lucius’s role for Ed in season 2.
In season 2 I was a bit disappointed that we did not get to see this supportive, aware, and emotionally intelligent part of his character as much, but I understand why. Ed was in such a state that Frenchie did not know the reasons behind and did not want to get killed, so he did not try to support Ed as much, which makes sense for his character. I feel awful that he felt he needed to lock away his trauma in a box in his mind because of how unhealthy that is, but I also am aware that the atmosphere of Ed’s ship at the start of season two was not the kind of place to talk it through as a crew, so I understand why he did that too. Still, he had enough of a heart to try and help Izzy instead of killing him when Ed shot him despite how awful Izzy had been to all of them in the past, which is commendable. And these traits that Frenchie has makes so much sense why Ed chose him to be the new first mate, along with how Frenchie has been supportive of Ed in the past.
I also find Frenchie’s superstitions to be kinda funny and cute. His explanation of women having crystals in their bodies is iconic, as is his fear of cats. It is also so endearing how he channeled his fear of cats, making the most iconic flag of the revenge in season 1, it being the one bloodied with Nigel’s blood and used by the British as a symbol of the revenge, using a witch costume for his costume in the fuckery in s1e6 with Wee John along as his cat, and then having a feral cat on his jacket and the new flag of the revenge in season 2. As a cat enthusiast myself, I love the cat motif with Frenchie and what it means to him. God I love Frenchie’s character so much, and although I do think Olu deserved to be captain after he was basically elected as one in season 1, my love of Frenchie makes me so happy that he is the new captain of the revenge at the end of season 2.
Now with both of these characters together, I personally see them as besties, along with Wee John. Their interactions with each other are so sweet and fun I only wish we got to see them play off of each other more in the show. While I personally ship Frenchie more with Wee John and Roach more with Buttons (i am sitting on a whole manifesto for this ship i just need to find the right time to post it), I do get very happy when I see ship art of these two.
I am sorry this is probably much more than you expected but I love these characters so much and I don’t get to talk about them enough so I had to get all of my thoughts out there!!

Food insecure Stede Bonnet?
Yeah, sure!
I know this sounds like a weird theory; Stede is rich, how could he possibly be food insecure? But an important thing to keep in mind here is technically wasn't rich growing up; he was the child of rich parents. And those can be two very different things.
We know Stede's father was abusive and was very disappointed in Stede, and it's pretty reasonable to assume that he punished Stede frequently. And while we don't have much explicit information as to what the instructors & other authority figures at Stede's boarding school were like, I'd be shocked if they weren't similar. And if one or both of them favored meal deprivation as a form of punishment -- your classic sent to bed without supper kind of thing -- then it's very possible that little Stede could end up food insecure.
But that's just theoretically how it could have happened, on to the actual evidence. It's clear that part of what Stede is doing as a pirate captain, especially in his behavior in the first episode, is trying to re-parent himself through the crew and generally make sure they have all the support and care and all the things he wished he had. And Stede explains that the reason he pays his crew a salary is if the average pirate doesn't steal, he doesn't eat. Stede is very concerned about the mental pressure of food being contingent on performing certain behaviors. Furthermore, based on Olu's line at the end where he says working for Stede means they are going to be paid AND fed implies that Stede is both paying them and providing for all the food on board.
We also have Nigel's taunts about Stede being fat as a young boy, despite that being objectively untrue (and fatphobic, but I hardly think Nigel's concerned about that). If Stede were frequently being forced to skip meals at school, that would likely lead to him eating a lot when he was allowed at meal time, and possibly also lead to food hoarding behavior. Nigel, being a fatphobic bully, wouldn't care about the context of Stede being forced to skip meals could very well have just started calling Stede fat because he "eats a lot." (This also makes Mary passive aggressively implying Stede is a pig hit way worse in way I hope she wasn't doing on purpose.)
A minor point, as I'm not sure how much really is the normal amount of food to keep on the ship in this context, but the fact that when they ran aground multiple members of the crew were immediately jumping to the possibility of cannibalism, does make it seem like Stede packing enough food for weeks is excessive.
But wait there's more! Stede is also very autistic-coded, and autistic people can often be very particular about what kind of food they like or even can mange to eat. I highly doubt Bonnet Sr or Stede's school would be accommodating of any food issues that Stede had, which would have forced him into a situation where he was either once again unable to eat or where he had to choke down what was in front of him to avoid starving (or whatever worse punishment he would get for refusing to eat) (and I mean literally choke down, my issues are pretty mild/manageable and I still have a handful that literally trigger my gag reflex). And none of that would have helped his issues with food any.
Stede mentions having loaded the ship's stores with marmalade. That does speak to the food hoarding I already mentioned, but the fact that he got so much of this specific marmalade suggest it might be a safe food for him. In fact, the 40 orange cake suggests that maybe oranges/orange flavor might just be a safe food for him in general.
And let's talk about the forty orange cake. Because Stede is not only defensive of the idea that he could have wasted food, he's practically aggressive in the way he tries to put the blame on Roach instead. And I think this could reflect a trauma response where Stede is trying to avoid getting into trouble. Between eating a lot of the foods that are safe for him, refusing to eat foods that he is averse to, and food hoarding, there are any number of different ways that child Stede might have gotten in trouble for taking too much/wasting food. Hence his reaction here.
And then finally, despite Stede's seeming preference for fine foods, he also seems perfectly willing to just eat whatever. He eats unseasoned field-dressed snake with no apparent issues whatsoever. But the trick here is if you have just mild issues with food and people who are not willing to accommodate that but will force you to eat the Bad food anyway, you get really good at forcing yourself to eat it without any sign you are dying a little on the inside because oh my god, lima beans make the inside of my mouth feel like its being coated in mushy ashes.
And there you have it, my theory on Stede being food insecure.
