📚Black Enough📚 . Black Enough is a collection of short stories edited by Ibi Zoboi. It contains stories that explore a span of Black experiences in America ranging from straight, LBGTQ+, wealthy, and poor. There are stories that tackle serious topics such as racism and homophobia but there are also stories that are truly about joy and just being a teenager. My goal going into this collection was to find some new authors to check out and that was definitely accomplished. Some stories that stand out to me are “The Trouble with Drowning” by Dhonielle Clayton, “Black. Nerd. Problems.” by Lamar Giles, and “Kissing Sarah Smart” by Justina Ireland. It’s rare that I come across a collection where I enjoy every story but I did have a good time reading every piece in this collection. . At my last Constitution 101 class, we talked about the Civil Rights Movement and civil disobedience. One of the things that has struck me as I'm relearning these materials is how very, devastatingly whitewashed the history I was taught growing up in the south actually was. I knew there was some bias from doing my own research through the years, but I guess I didn't understand the depth and breadth of it, or how growing up inside that world would shape and challenge my thinking. It's a bit like not knowing how screwed up your family is because it's the only family you've known and you kind of assume that's the true reality of families. It's not. . I'm so thankful for opportunities like the adult civics course, provided at no cost to me by my city, to continue learning and digging through this country's history with clearer eyes. . This book is a delight to read. And one of those "must reads" in my household. There are some books that demand to be read and talked about, and for middle grade readers, this book opens up a wealth of diversity and conversation starters. Have any of you read it?
