October 11 - Living Legend BrAmHa B
BrAmHa B or Brother Amitabh Harivansh Rai Bachchan is the living legend of Hindi Cinema..
Some facts about the Man in a sort of a chronological sequence.. though not always with dates or years..
October 11 1942 - Birth - Born as the first son of Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan at Allahabad (Now Prayagraj)
Attended Sherwood College Nainital -  First introduction to Stage acting
Graduated in Science from Kirori Mal College, Delhi University
Served at Kolkata probably as a an executive at Blue Bird
Ajitabh pushes him to join Madhuri contest to join films (probably the same year as Rajesh Khanna is picked and he is not)
Comes to Bombay to try his luck in Hindi film Industry.. Khwaja Ahmad Abbas gives him his first chance to prove his worth with Saat Hindustani
November 1969 The first film wins him a national award
Many producers and directors turn him down stating ‘ Kaise baans jaise log bhi actor banane chale  aate hain ‘
1971 Hrishikesh Mukherjee cast him as Babu Moshay or Dr.Bhaskar Banerjee  in Anand along with Superstar Rajesh Khanna who was suffering from Cancer.. Wins his second national award.. I think as best supporting actor
Luck still does not favor him much films after films bear the label of flops including Bansi Birju with Jaya Bhaduri who had established herself as a great natural actor in Guddi with Hrishi Da..
The stories say he had almost decided to quit and return and  had spent a night at Nariman Point benches (hearsay, I have no proof) when comedy star Mehmood took him home and made Bombay to Goa casting him in lead role opposite Aruna Irani
1973 Zanjeer released - He tastes the first success in a role which was turned down by quite a few heroes siting anti-hero image.. It seems pran sahab suggested Prakash Mehra to try it out with Amitabh Bachchan .. it unshackled his career like nothing before..
June 1973 Married Jaya Bhaduri at the request of his parents who permitted him to go with her for a vacation only if they could first marry..
Abhimaan and Namak Haraam established the Angry young man Image
Deewaar and Sholay with scripts from Salim-Javed launch him into superstardom at par with Rajesh Khanna or I would say even ahead of him that year.. as he also gave Chupke Chupke and Mili with Hrishi da in the same year
Yash Chopra experimented with him in Kabhi Kabhie to cast him into a romantic image.. the title song by Mukesh topped the charts at Binaca Geetmala
Manmohan Desai cast him in big budget film Amar Akbar Anthony along with Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor in the title roles a film of lost and found sons it was a great blockbuster and set the trends for multistar films
1978 Don did so well in the times of mutistarrer films that he could pull up success with anything he touched .. The same year Trishul and Muqaddar Ka Sikandar also turned out to be mega blockbusters.. in spite of the fact that they were released within a short span of each other
His first decade ended on a high note with such success stories as mentioned above.. He was considered almost a sure shot for the success of a film
‘Mere Paas aao Mere Doston’ - Recorded first song as a playback singer for himself in Mr. Natwarlal
Yash Chopra cast him in a great film ‘Kaala Patthar’ without a single song for him and I consider it as one of the top films for him.. in fact he had not been offered many dialogues either .. his temperament alone made his role click so well
Real life rumors or stories of his affair with Rekha were weaved into a great film Silsila in 1981 by Yash Ji.. who must be said to be a director who really brought out the best in him besides Hrishi da
He is injured on the sets of ‘Coolie during a fight scene with Punit Issar and battles for life.. I think if I am right he was declared dead in some newspapers or bulletins only to be revived by doctors at Breach Candy Hospital.. His fans and family celebrate 2nd August as his second birth.. life after death.. too dramatic
During his battle for life producers and directors would often be going through anxious moments that had invested too heavily on him.. he was the most successful actor and superstar..
India and Indians prayed for his life in different places of worship.. here was a man who was above all cast and creed and would make his way into the hearts of millions of Indians of all ages
I conclude this first innings of his career slightly beyond the first decade of his life in Hindi film industry.. probably eight of my top 10 favorite films are from this first innings of his career.. he still acts and acts quite well at that.. Black 2005  and Piku much later are the only other two films which make into my top 10 fllms.. and not find a mention here
Love Affection and Respect

What's your idea for a SRK and Alia, father daughter story? That sounds really interesting!
lol well full disclosure, the idea is half-inspired by What A Girl Wants with Amanda Bynes lmao
A (not so) brief summary:
A young Tabu and SRK are in love. Her parents are strict and pushing her to become a doctor (she wants to be a photographer, they bond over all things art), while he’s an aspiring actor who is seen as a loafer who will never make anything of himself. He eventually catches a break when he’s taken on by a manipulative but successful manager, Rishi Kapoor, who thinks Tabu’s character and their relationship is holding SRK back. He orchestrates their breakup, afterward Tabu finds out she’s pregnant. SRK goes on the become a star, and Tabu, having been disowned by her parents for choosing to be a single mother, moves to New York and raises her daughter (Alia), eventually becoming a successful photographer there.
This is all just backstory by the way lmao
So the movie starts with Alia graduating from high school. Through voiceovers and passive aggressive encounters, we see how she’s felt ostracized in the desi community all her life for being the daughter of an unwed mother. Tabu discourages her from following anything Bollywood-related, and steers her to famous Indian writers and painters instead. One day, she comes across a picture of a young Tabu standing next to a guy she recognizes as a Bollywood star, but doesn’t know much about. And the more she looks at it, the more the resemblance between the becomes clear. She sees the date on the back of the picture and becomes even more convinced. She rents a few of his movies (here, we’d start to see a song picturization through the television but then we’d enter the picturization as if it was happening in real time, if that makes sense). She’s fascinated by him and by his world and she NEEDS to know the truth about her parentage. So when her mom drops her off at the airport to fly to Stanford to start college, she tells her she loves her and thanks her for everything and says she’ll talk to her soon...then she goes into the airport and buys a ticket to Mumbai. End of Act I.
Act II is just her bumbling her way through Mumbai, taking it all in, and hanging around Andheri where all the aspiring actors and junior artists and crew members hung out. She becomes introduced to Saqib Saleem, who is an aspiring actor but currently working as SRK’s driver. He thinks she’s batshit crazy, but after she pleads her case to him, he agrees to arrange a meeting with SRK.
So they meet, and of course SRK remembers her mother and the story matches up. He takes her into his home where he meets his fiancee, Madhuri Dixit, a former Bollywood superstar who is now grooming her daughter (Sonam Kapoor ideally, but also maybe Kriti Sanon?) for a debut role in SRK’s first home production. They see Alia as a threat and do everything they can to sabotage the relationship. Then Tabu arrives, and agrees to let Alia stay in Mumbai, as long as she promises to go back to school Spring semester. So it’s a full house and tensions are high, but SRK and Tabu slowly acknowledge they still have feelings for each other and still don’t know how Rishi’s manager character conspired to keep them apart. They get their own slow burn romantic track. Did you hear that? SRK romances not one but TWO women his own age!!!!
Meanwhile, a romance is brewing between Alia and Saqib the driver. He’s been escorting her to her father’s shoots, driving her to different parties and events. Suddenly she’s the talk of the town. She’s unpolished but has raw star appeal and her father’s trademark dimples. One day they’re watching Sonam/Kriti/potential stepsister rehearse with her acting partner, and she can’t get the dance sequence right. It costs them a whole day. The crew packs up and Saqib encourages Alia to give the steps/dialogue a try. So she does, only half seriously, but she nails it. And as it turns out, someone left the digital camera on. When the discover the footage, they encourage SRK to take Alia instead of his future stepdaughter in the film instead.
So Alia is faced with a choice: join the crazy world of Bollywood she’s undeniably drawn to, or go back home to the life she’s supposed to live and the one her mother built for her. I won’t tell you what happens, just in case I ever actually do write this down seriously. But it’s about identity, and mother/daughter relationships, and the magic and excess of Bollywood, and lovers finding their way back to each other. It’s basically an exxxxxtravaganza.
And my favorite character is the stepsister character, because she seems airheaded and Alia/the driver delight in making fun of her, but as the movie progresses you see the way her mother treats her (similar to the mother/daughter track in Luck By Chance) and in the end she is a very different person than she starts out as. She’s sort of the comic relief AND the villain AND the anti-heroine.
It’s my super ambitious, never gonna happen dream project...but I write tidbits about it nevertheless. Thinking about it makes me happy, checking all the trope boxes and then occasionally subverting them makes me happy. The idea of Tabu and Madhuri going head to head makes me VERY happy. The budget would probably be like 500 crore but I don’t care, let me daydream!

Five decades of ‘Mera Naam Joker’: Epic timelessness
By  Rajiv Vijayakar
ON 18TH DECEMBER 1970, MERA NAAM JOKER HIT THE SCREEN. IT WAS A PATH-BREAKING FILM AND STORYLINE AT THE TIME. COMMERCIALLY, IT DID NOT DO WELL, BUT WITHIN THE NEXT FEW YEARS, IT CAME TO BE RANKED AS A CLASSIC. TODAY, BUT FOR THE ECONOMIC ASPECT, WHICH MIGHT HAVE GONE WORSE, FANS EVEN WONDER WHY THIS SWEEPINGLY MAJESTIC EPIC WAS NOT MADE IN 70MM, AS RAJ KAPOOR HAD STARRED, JUST THREE YEARS BEFORE IT, IN INDIA’S TILL-THEN ONLY 70MM FILM, AROUND THE WORLD.Here is a fact file about the epic and timeless classic.*In those times, multi-star films were unknown. There had been only two examples on a big scale, Mother India (1957) and Waqt (1965), the latter film originally planned by B.R. Chopra with Prithviraj Kapoor and his three sons, Raj himself, Shammi and Shashi Kapoor! This made Mera Naam Joker the biggest multi-star film until then.*Rajendra Kumar, Dharmendra and Manoj Kumar starred in it besides Raj. And there were three heroines—Padmini. Simi Garewal and Russian actress Kseniya Ryabinkina, later seen in the 2009 Rishi Kapoor film Chintuji.*The movie had two intervals—one of the only two movies to have them in Hindi movie history, and was 25 reels and 255 minutes long. Its international version on DVD is 233 minutes long, while the Indian DVD is just 184 minutes. The only other movie with two intervals (not in all prints though) was Sangam, the film produced and directed by Raj Kapoor just before Mera Naam Joker.*Rishi Kapoor made his screen debut as the adolescent version of his father’s character. Raj Kapoor had wanted to cast elder son Randhir Kapoor in this role, but he did not lose enough weight!*The music was a chartbuster even though the film fared poorly at the box-office: those were the days a music score had a separate quality-based fate from the parent film!*However, Lata Mangeshkar’s absence was keenly felt and even sensed, as she had had a tiff with Raj Kapoor as well as Shankar after Sangam. Jaikishan, who had split from Shankar by then (both composed separately here), was still working with Lata.*Lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri revealed that a third verse for his classic ‘Jaane Kahaan Gaye Woh Din’ was written by him but not used. Mukesh loved it and would often incorporate it when performing at a live concert.*The film won the Filmfare awards for Best Music (Shankar-Jaikishan), Male Playback (Manna Dey), Cinematography (Radhu Karmakar), Sound Recording (Allauddin) and above all for Raj Kapoor as the Best Director.*Manna Dey and Raj Kapoor also won the National awards for that year.*Rishi Kapoor is the only big star to have won a National award for his acting debut, apart from Amitabh Bachchan a year earlier. By a coincidence, they are the only stars in 2019 from that generation who are still relevant. But the tangy part was that Rishi won the National Best Child Actor award!*Rishi Kapoor has a standout memory of when he won this award. “I showed my father the trophy and he told me to take it to my grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor. My grandfather began weeping. and just when I was wondering why, he said something that I did not understand then, “Aaj Raj ne mera karzaa utaar diya (Today, my son has paid his debt to me)!”*Incidentally, Raj’s character in the film was called Ranbir Raj, his real name, and his grandson and Rishi’s son Ranbir now carries his name as well. *Two stalwarts from the RK cinematic household—Mukesh and Shailendra—were a part of the team, sharing credits with their debut-making sons,*Nitin Mukesh and Shaily Shailendra. The senior Shailendra had passed away in 1966, but his song (Raj Kapoor always kept a bank of songs), ‘Jeena Yahaan Marna Yahaan’ was used, completed by Shaily.*‘Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye’, a song by Phil Park and Harry Parr-Davies, first sung during the Second World War by Gracie Fields, was used with a romantic implication between the married teacher Simi Garewal and student Rishi Kapoor in the film. The chorus song had Rishi’s portiosn sung by Nitin Mukesh! Nitin Mukesh was to later sing more than once for Rishi Kapoor, notably in the chartbuster ‘Zindagi Ka Naam Dosti’ in the 1987 Khudgarz.*Mukesh himself gave playback for ‘Teetar Ke Do Aage Teetar’, the only song he sang for Rishi, Raj Kapoor’s son and the next generation Kapoor.*Manoj Kumar has revealed, “For the first chapter that starred Rishi Kapoor, Simi Garewal and me, I also worked with Raj Kapoor-ji as a writer – the solah baras concept and philosophy were mine, and Raj-ji was big-hearted enough to mention to many people in the film industry that I had a hand in shaping the screenplay.”*Dharmendra, who played the circus owner in the film, has let on that he would stand outside RK Studios as a struggler, wondering when he would get a chance to even enter the premises! Later, as a star, he had requested Raj to give him an opportunity to work with him, and Rishi Kapoor recollected that the then-big star had taken a much lower fee than his market-rate. As Dharmendra put it, “It was a dream come true. I was not only acting with Raj-saab but also under his direction, which was a chance very few others got!”*Raj Kapoor gave the names of these two leading men, as well as of Rajendra Kumar and Dara Singh, in the ‘Acknowledgement’ credits of the movie, for this gesture at accepting smaller roles.*The film was released in Russia (Raj Kapoor’s international citadel, so to speak, since the 1951 Awara) in three separate parts, and was such a hit that, inflation adjusted to times today, the three chapters did a combined business of over Rs 840 crore!*The financial crisis that Mera Naam Joker landed Raj Kapoor in finally made him produce his modestly-budgeted record-smashing Bobby, in 1973, his biggest hit ever as producer, His biggest hit as a director came in 1985 with Ram Teri Ganga Maili.*Nevertheless, what is most important is that Raj Kapoor declared Mera Naam Joker as his favourite film.

Remember the scene from the film Luck by chance when Farhan Akhtar makes a confession to Dimple Kapadia and says ‘I am in this world because of you’? I pretty much had a similar moment with Rishi Kapoor and my confession happened when I had the good fortune of interviewing him. I told him that my parents are his huge admirers and their first date was when they went to watch his film Sarg…

Luck By Chance Annotated Edition Part 4: Fans Through the Glass
#LuckByChance annotated part 4: @ihrithik and fans through the glass
I’m back!  This is a completely ridiculous and non-practical series, by the way.  JHMS, I got the best views EVER (even beat Bahubali).  This, I’m getting like a few dozen on each post.  But on the other hand, it is my few dozen most loyal commentators/readers, so just for you, I will continue to put them up.  Well, and also I really liked the film. Jacqueline Fernandez is a Sri Lankan born actress and was the winner of the Miss Universe Sri Lanka winner in the year 2006. Popularly known as the Jacq of hearts in India, Jacqueline started off her journey in the entertainment field with a news anchoring job in Sri Lanka. She later switched to modelling and also went on to represent her country at the Miss Universe in 2006. During a modelling assignment in India, Jacqueline decided to give Bollywood a shot. She auditioned for the lead role in Sujoy Ghosh's fantasy drama Aladin and bagged the part. Later on, Jacqueline found commercial success in 2011 with the sequel of Murder titled Murder 2. After Murder 2, Jacqueline became a familiar face in the industry and went on to star in many glamorous roles like Race 2, Kick, Housefull 2 and 3, A gentleman and Judwaa 2. Apart from acting, Jacqueline is also a pretty popular figure with commercial brands and has actively participated for humanitarian work and animal welfare. So, on the occasion of her birthday we decided list down all of Jacqueline Fernandez’s movies in her Bollywood career so far. 2009 Aladin Aladin was an Indian film based on the popular tale by the same name. Aladin Chaterjee (Ritesh Deshmukh) was always teased by his classmates for his fairytale name. Aladin was studying in Khwaish University and falls head over heels for a new exchange student Jasmine (Jacqueline Fernandez), however he’s too shy to express his feelings to her. One day, he rubs a lamp that was gifted to him on his birthday earlier and to his surprise a genie named Genuis (Amitabh Bachchan) comes out. Now, we’re all aware of the three wish rule of genies but Aladin ends up wasting his first two wishes. For his third wish, he asks genie to help him win Jasmine’s heart but without any sort of magical trick. Everything turns into chaos when a Ringmaster (Sanjay Dutt) comes in to the picture with the hope of getting even more powerful than he is and takes on Genius and Aladin. The film was a no show at the box-office and Jacquline did not get the start to her Bollywood career that she would’ve liked. 2010 Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai Jacqueline featured with Riteish again in her next film titled Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai. Directed by Milap Zaveri, the film was a science fiction romance. In this movie, Riteish played an assistant to director Farah Khan who never had his luck with the ladies. Farah’s film’s mega star Desh (Rulsaan Mumtaz) is the country’s heartthrob and Rajesh (Riteish Deshmukh) falls in love with his sister Natasha (Sonal Sehgal) but alas, like his many encounters with women in the past, this one too ends in a heartbreak. While watching a movie in a drive-in theater, a gorgeous lady lands in his arms, and passes out. Later on, she tells him that she’s here from Venus and has come to earth in search of true love. So, Rajesh tries to set her up with Desh, thinking they would be the perfect fit. But, in that process, she realises that Rajesh is in fact the person she needs to be with and confesses his love for him. 2011 Murder 2 Murder 2 was a sequel to the to the 2004 film, Murder. Along with Jacquline Fernandez, the film also starred Emraan Hashmi and Prashant Narayanan in lead. Orphaned at a young age, Arjun (Emraan Hashmi) lives alone in Goa and manages to earn his livelihood by working for local gangsters and the mafia. Arjun is in a happy relationship with his girlfriend Priya (Jacqueline Fernandez), a fashion model. After the rise of missing prostitutes in Goa, he is hired by a gangster to find the person behind these abductions. He tries to use a prostitute Reshma as a bait in order to catch the culprit but she too gets abducted and he looses contact with her. Guilt-ridden, he decides to use all possible resources to try and locate her before she herself becomes included in the official 'missing persons' list. His relationship with Priya too gets affected due to his involvement in the case. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, Murder 2 crossed the Rs. 100 crore mark and was declared a blockbuster.
2012 Housefull 2 After delivering a box-office success with Murder 2, Jacqueline starred in the multi starrer comedy Housefull 2. Apart from Jacqueline, the film starred Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Ritesh Deshmukh, Shreyas Talpade, Asin, Zareen Khan, Shazahn Padamsee, Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Boman Irani and Mithun Chakraborty in the lead roles. The film was about two step brothers Chintu (Rishi Kapoor) and Dabboo (Randhir Kapoor), who hate each other to the very core. They are always trying to one up each other and their competitiveness even extends to selecting a better or richer groom for their daughter. In this comedy of errors, we see four men help each other to fool their prospective father-in-laws creating a lot of confusion and mayhem. 2013 Race 2 The 2008 release Race was a typical Abbas - Mustan film in many ways. Filled with plot twists, the film went on to be a massive hit. Race 2 takes on a similar route. Ranvir Singh (Saif Ali Khan) and Armaan Malik (John Abraham) con a businessman named Vikram Thapar (Rajesh Khattar) for the ownership of his casinos and become friends in the process. Ranvir falls for Aleena (Deepika Padukone) who’s shown as Armaan’s half sister. Jacquline Fernandez played Armaan’s girlfriend Omisha in the film. Armaan and Ranvir later turn on each other but, just like the first one, we see Ranvir come out on top. Even though the film received criticism, it managed to collect a total of Rs.162 crore form the box-office.
2014 Kick Many regard the film Kick as the turning point of Jacquline’s career. Jacquline Fernandez played the character of Shaina, a psychiatrist. In Warsaw, she meets up with a police inspector Himanshu (Randeep Hooda) and the two of them open up about their past. She tells him about her relationship with Devi Lal Singh aka Devil (Salman Khan). She talks about his madness and their whirlwind romance, until one day he breaks up with her for a new kick and walks away, never to return. Himanshu on the other hand talks about a criminal he’s been chasing but unable to capture. What they don’t know is the fact that they’re talking about the exact same person. Later on, Devi returns in their lives in a new disguise claiming that he’s lost his memory. But, behind everything there is an underlying purpose that we later find out. Salman Khan completely owned his character as the Devil. His sizzling chemistry with Jacquline in the film was a major reason for the success as well. Songs like Jumme Ki Raat and Hangover went on to be chart toppers. The film earned a total of a whopping Rs. 402 crore worldwide.
2015 Roy Roy was a film in which we saw two parallel storylines. First, we see the story about Kabir (Arjun Rampal), a successful filmmaker who goes to Malaysia for the shoot of his film and meets up with Ayesha (Jacqueline Fernandez). The two eventually fall in love but Ayesha leaves him since he has the reputation of being a casanova. A dejected Kabir is unable to complete his film and goes in to depression. Meanwhile, we also see Roy (Ranbir Kapoor), an international art thief who’s got his eyes set on his next target, a painting. That painting is owned by Tia (Jacqueline Fernandez), who stays by herself in a huge mansion. Roy befriends her and manages to steal the painting. Tia is left heartbroken since she began to fall in love with Roy. While everything seems to be heading for the worse, we see Kabir complete his film and Roy realising his mistake and returning the painting. Roy was a complete no show at the box-office as it only collected a total of Rs. 36 crore.
Brothers The film was a story about two estranged brothers who have a face off in the in the boxing rink. David Fernandez (Akshay Kumar) quits his job as a Physics teacher to become a full-time fighter, the reason behind that being is that he’ll do anything it takes to save his daughter who’s suffering from a terminal disease. His wife Jenny (Jacquleine Fernandez) however is worried that he has to risk his life just so that he can meet his daughter’s medical expenses. Monty Fernandez on the other hand becomes a viral sensation after a video of his fight goes viral online. Finally getting the chance to prove himself to the world, he trains vigorously. In the end, we see the two brothers come up against each other for the ultimate show down.
2016 Housefull 3 Sandy (Akshay Kumar), Bunty (Abhishek Bachchan), and Teddy (Riteish Deshmukh) are in love with Ganga (Jacquleine Fernandez), Saraswati (Nargis Fakhri), and Jamuna (Lisa Haydon), respectively, mostly because they are the rich daughters of Batook (Boman Irani), a Gujarati NRI with a bad sense of humour. They now how to convince their father for the marriage who is extremely against their relationships. Like every Sajid Khan film, the provides you with entertainment but is filled with cliche humour. The film went on to collect Rs. 195 crore at the box-office. Dishoom Dishoom was another masala entertainer that featured Jacquline Fernandez. The film is fast paced and is always on point which helps keeps the viewer engaged. A buddy cop film was a fresh attempt from Bollywood and it was done rather well. In the film, India’s top batsmen Viraj Sharma (Saqib Saleem) goes missing in Middle East (No guessing where the inspiration for that name came from). Two cops Kabir Shergill (John Abraham) and Junaid Ansari (Varun Dhawan) are assigned for a 36-hours man-hunt before the final match between India and Pakistan. Jacqueline Fernandez plays a thief who helps the police officers in the search of Viraj. The film went on to decent business at the box-office with a total of Rs. 120 crore.
A Flying Jatt The superhero genre has always been a hit and miss in India. This was another attempt that failed to live up to expectations. Directed by Remo D’Souza, the film starred Tiger Shroff and Jacqueline Fernandez in lead. In the film, we follow the story of Aman (Tiger Shroff), an average boy whose led to believe in doing good for others by his mother. Malhotra (Kay Kay Menon) wants to destroy the Sikh colony owned by Aman’s mother Bebe (Amrita Singh) and wants to build a factory. Aman is shown to be sitting by a tree praying for the safety of the colony and that very tree gives him superhero powers. With the help of these superpowers he protects his people and fights against crime in the city. Jacqueline Fernandez plays the character of Kirti, Aman’s love interest in the film. She is his constant source of motivation pushing him to make good use of his powers. A Flying Jatt was poorly received by critics and the audience.
2017 A Gentleman Gaurav (Sidharth Malhotra) is on a mission… a mission to settle down and start a family of his own while living a happy life. He sees his life partner in his colleague Kavya (Jacqueline Fernandez). But Kavya on the other hand is interested in someone who’s more adventurous and risk-loving. Gaurav visits Mumbai for a meeting and his doppelgänger Rishi, a spy on the run is about to bring a whole new twist in his life. The film gives you just enough to keep you interested in the story. A gentleman received mixed reviews and failed to pull in the crowd at the box-office. Judwaa 2 Judwaa 2, the reboot of 1997 release Judwaa. In the remake, which was also healed by David Dhawan who directed the original, Varun Dhawan stepped in the shoes of Salman Khan while Taapsee and Jacqueline Fernandez played the characters originally portrayed by Rambha and Karisma Kapoor respectively. Now since this was a remake the storyline for the film was just like the original. Jacquline featured in the remixed version of the song Chalti Hai Kya 9 Se 12 in the film which went on to become a massive hit. The original received a lot of love from the audience so it was expected that the remake would perform well given David Dhawan’s expertise in comedy and the popularity of the cast and it didn’t disappoint.
2018 Race 3 Race 3 followed a similar trajectory like the previous two instalments but underwent a major shift in casting as it introduced many new characters. Salman Khan stepped into the shoes of Saif Ali Khan as the main man and naturally is portrayed as a one man army in the film. Jacqueline Fernandez looked her gorgeous self and is a part of some stunning action sequences in the film. We already witness her sizzling chemistry with Salman in Kick and the two looked all things hot on screen in this film as well. While the film went a little overboard with the plot twists this time around, it seems like the audience didn’t mind it too much as the film had a decent run collecting just over Rs. 200 crore. from filmfares https://ift.tt/31vzQcE

She may have wedded the superstar of the ’70s, Rajesh Khanna. But Dimple Kapadia’s life has been no less phenomenal. Married to both the arc-lights and a megastar in the same year she chose to give up one for the other. But Dimple Khanna soon grew up to some sinister home truths. She yearned for the view outside… never mind if it meant walking down alien alleys. From there began her tryst with herself – as an actor, as a woman. A bunch of formula films later, she broke into the parallel orbit and asserted her credibility as an actor. Aitbaar, Kaash, Lekin, Rudaali, Krantiveer, Angaar, Luck By Chance, Being Cyrus, Finding Fanny… Dimple’s rise as an actor has coincided with her growth as a person. While Mrinal Sen compared her to Sophia Loren and described her face as ‘a landscape of desolation’, Feroz Khan called her a woman ‘who’s just dying to be herself on screen’. Like her character Shanichari in Rudaali, a professional mourner who draws from the torment of her soul, Dimple’s performances resonated the angst within.
Love and loss have been her close allies. Be it the death of relationships or the demise of her loved ones, she’s survived it all. While as Bobby she was sheer sunlight, her wine eyes, through the years, reflect a hangover of pain. And to create what better than revisiting the manor of your own memories. Here’s going through the life and times of the incredible actor…
Tumblr media
 That year – 1973!
Amidst a line-up of a hundred young girls, Raj Kapoor singled out the older daughter of Gujarati entrepreneur Chunilal Kapadia and Betty to be launched opposite his son Rishi Kapoor in Bobby (1973). In fact, her introduction scene in the film was inspired from Raj’s first meeting with muse Nargis decades ago… where an unsuspecting Nargis had opened the door to Raj… running her flour smeared hands through her hair!
But before Bobby could win over the audiences, superstar Rajesh Khanna wooed a 15-year-old Dimple to be his child bride in March ’73. While this unexpected twist left his thousand female fans shattered – some even committed suicide – it was a fairytale wedding for Dimple. For someone, who often strolled past the superstar’s sea-facing bungalow Aashirwad in Bandra to someday walk in as the empress of his castle was a surreal moment.  “I came to know him precisely seven days before the marriage. We were together in a flight to Ahmedabad for a show. He sat next to me but did not utter a word. Just as the flight was about to land, he turned towards me, looked hard into my eyes and said he wanted me to marry him,” Dimple once recalled the whirlwind romance. She was 16 to his 31.
 Blockbuster Bobby
Six months after her marriage, released RK’s love tale Bobby. “Mujhse dosti karoge?” asks Bobby Braganza in the iconic scene. A cleft on her cherubic face, sherry eyes, a natural naiveté and loads of untouched sexiness… Dimple became a teen icon. She helmed the Bobby cult – the dotted and knotted Bobby blouse and the earphone-hairstyle, the Bobby clips, Bobby sandals… were feverishly followed. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (along with Jaya Bhaduri for Abhimaan). But that was the magnificent anti-climax of her nipped-in-the-bud career. The mehndi on her hands, visible in the last portions of Bobby, was a grim reminder that she was now Kaka’s possession.
The rocky marriage
One can never fathom the reasons behind Rajesh’s impulsive decision to marry Dimple. Some dubbed it as ‘attention seeking’, some called it an ‘ego boost’ for the superstar, who wanted to spite his ex-ladylove, actor/model Anju Mahendroo. But sadly, by the end of 1974 when their first daughter Twinkle Khanna was born (she shares the same birthdate, December 29, with her late father) the cracks in the marriage were evident. Rajesh’s slipping stardom and his alleged alcoholism and abusive ways left his adolescent wife traumatised. Still in her early 20s, in 1982, Dimple, reportedly, moved into her parents’ home with daughters, Twinkle and Rinkie, aged eight and five then. She began working with Ramesh Sippy for her comeback film Saagar. “Right from the beginning of my marriage I knew it wouldn’t work out. My biggest failing is I don’t take a stand. I let people stomp all over me. Finally, when I do put my foot down, it’s too late,” she had told Filmfare in July 1983.
Tumblr media
The eventuful ‘80s
Though Saagar was to be her comeback, Dasari Narayana Rao’s Zakhmi Sher (1984), opposite Jeetendra released first. Saagar premiered in August 1985 and was controversial for the scene where she was seen topless for a split second. Her easy performance as Mona D’Silva, torn between her friend (Kamal Haasan) and beloved (Rishi Kapoor), won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. “Certainly, marriage brings security… I was Mrs Rajesh Khanna. It takes guts to leave all that. But now that I’m earning and fending for myself, I feel more secure. There’s a hell of a difference in spending your time playing cards and acting,” she said to Filmfare in October 1984.
Tumblr media
Mukul Anand’s Aitbaar (1985), a Hitchcockian thriller (apparently based on Dial M For Murder) with Suresh Oberoi and Raj Babbar, had her play the beautiful wife of a sadistic husband. The film had soulful music by Bappi Lahiri. The songs Kisi nazar ko tera intezar aaj bhi hai and Awaaz di hai have great recall value.
Tumblr media
Rahul Rawail’s actioner Arjun with Sunny Deol added to her reliability just as it sparked off rumours of a liaison between the lead pair. Feroz Khan’s stylised Janbaaz (1986) presented her in a sexy and glamorous avatar and is still remembered for her steamy lovemaking scene with Anil Kapoor in the barn. Dimple’s moment of epiphany came with Mahesh Bhatt’s Kaash (1987). The narrative that dealt with the decline of a superstar (Jackie Shroff) had perhaps a familiar echo for the actress, who was also evolving as a person. Her act of a disillusioned wife and a distraught mother had flashes of brilliance. In fact, Bhatt was then quoted saying, “I couldn’t differentiate between Dimple and Pooja her character… She has gone through so much in her life that… she only has to be herself.” Dimple and Jackie shared a great chemistry as their bond traversed through love, conflict, abuse and estrangement… only to come anew.
The dramatic, though coarse, Zakhmi Aurat (1988) had her play a police officer, who gets gang-raped. After the judicial system fails her, she joins forces with other rape victims to castrate the rapists. The film was a bold statement, hitherto unseen in our films. Another notable film was Mukul Anand’s Insaaf (1987). Her pairing with Vinod Khanna was a beauty meets brawn encounter with the song Sulagti hai aankhen… celebrating it to the hilt. Subhash Ghai’s Ram Lakhan (1989) was another commercial success in her diary.
Tumblr media
The offbeat ’90s
“When I do glamorous roles, people say I look haggard. Why can’t directors conceive me in a realistic set-up? Why can’t directors like Mahesh Bhatt and Shyam Benegal sign me?” asked Dimple in a Filmfare interview in September 1985. And the ’90s threw open the floodgates of arthouse cinema for her. Govind Nihalani’s Drishti (1990) had Shekhar Kapur and her as a married urban couple, trying to find meaning in a dithering marriage.
Based on Rabindranath Tagore’s short story, Gulzar’s Lekin (1990), set in Rajasthan, revolved around Vinod Khanna who’s entranced by Reva (Dimple), a spirit. Apparently, to make her character truthful, director Gulzar asked her to refrain from blinking and give a ‘fixed gaze’ for a surreal effect. Another milestone was Kalpana Lajmi’s Rudaali (1993). Also set in Rajasthan, the film was based on Mahasweta Devi’s story about professional mourners. Dimple played Shanichari, a woman who has never cried despite a sad life but is compelled to weep for a living. It won her the National Award. “I was proud; I’d proved that an actress from mainstream cinema could win an award,” she told Filmfare in October 1993.
Mrinal Sen’s 1995 Bengali drama Antareen had her play a woman in a loveless marriage. In Mehul Kumar’s Krantiveer (opposite Nana Patekar), she played a journalist, who becomes a rape victim and received her fourth Filmfare Award as the Best Supporting Actress. Other notable films were Shashilal K Nair’s Angaar (1992), where she played an orphan and Priyadarshan’s Gardish (1993), where she played a prostitute.
The magical millennium
Not averse to playing her age, the 2000s had her dabble with an array of characters. They include Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai (2001), where she played Tara Jaiswal, a middle-aged alcoholic divorcee. Her amorphous relationship with much younger artist Siddharth (Khanna) here was a poignant portrayal. Leela (20012), directed by Somnath Sen and co-starring Vinod Khanna, followed her unconventional relationship with a student. The year 2005 saw her unite with Rishi Kapoor in Pyaar Mein Twist. They played two middle-aged single parents, who fall in love. Her part of ex-superstar Neena Walia in Luck by Chance (2009), referred to in the film as ‘a crocodile in a chiffon saree’ was applauded. In 2006, she co-starred with Saif Ali Khan and Naseeruddin Shah in Being Cyrus (2006), directed by Homi Adajania. She essayed Katy, Shah’s neurotic wife, who has an affair with a younger Cyrus. Cocktail (2012) and Finding Fanny (2014) tapped her reserves of fun even as they completed her trinity with Adajania.
Tumblr media
The golden years
Through time, her equation with estranged husband Rajesh went through an overhaul. The two, somehow, never divorced and the initial resentment gave way to a newfound mutual respect. This was more than evident, when he was detected with cancer. The family, along with son-in-law Akshay Kumar, rallied around Rajesh, stepping wholeheartedly into Aashirwad once again, giving him the support and care that perhaps only a family could shower. When he passed away on July 18, 2012, he was given a farewell, which was a reminder of the phenomenon he once was.
Today, Dimple seems to be in a peaceful phase. “Rinkie is my child and Twinkle is my mother. Twinkle looks after us all. She tries to make my life as comfortable as possible,” she one shared with Filmfare. Fond of painting and surfing the internet, she’s enjoying the mellow moments that life has thrown her way. “There has been a lot of pain in my life but I don’t find myself going into that area…This could be wrong because people say it’s cathartic to go through the process. I’m scared of losing myself even for a few minutes. It’s too painful. I don’t know whether that’s going to work for me or hit me all at once. But so far life has been kind,” she had once shared with Filmfare. A deep thought indeed!
