every time someone reduces CAPTAIN !!! elizabeth "lizzie" lafayette down to "a sad lesbian" a fairy dies bc i shoot it with my gun. like you're telling me you were spoon-fed a character that has one of the most realistic and RAW representations of grief and perseverance in the series and all you got from that was "she's sad" ????
is she a constantly happy character? Fuck no! that's acknowledged!! but to take EVERYTHING that she is, which has positive and negative aspects THAT ARE BOTH SHOWN, to take the fact that she is THE DRIVING FORCE OF THE MAIN BACKGROUND PLOT, and reduce her down to NOTHING but her relationships?? ?what the hell!!!

Thinking about Jay's hair and her growth as a character.
In Loffinlot, some of her hair got shaved off by one of the rouge bald men and she was really upset about it. (I know it was a bit, but let's pretend it wasn't because I want to)
Maybe her father told her and Ava to never cut their hair because it's a strong representation of the Ferin family (Jayson has shorter hair because it's literally fire) and she was mortified because to her, her hair was a symbol of her strength.
Then, maybe after the B.L.O.C.K and the first confrontation with her father, she buzzed the side of her head. Not only to even out the hair she lost in the altercation in Loffinlot, but to represent her separation from her father and certain navy values.
Maybe after becoming the Riptide pirates, losing Gill, getting him back, realizing she has never been more free in her entire life... She slowly cuts her hair. Inch by inch.
Eventually they all change their looks, and Jay says fuck it. She cuts her hair down to shoulder length (or shorter) because she's free. She can be strong without being a Ferin, without that literal and metaphorical weight on her shoulders.
It's also a lot easier to take care of on a pirate ship
